There's nothing like having a best friend forever-that person who
you can have fun with and talk to.July 30 is the International Day of
Friendship.Maybe you can seek to encounter a new friend. And while
we're talking about friends, don't think humans are the only ones who
know a thing or two about friendship.Check out these friendly animals
in nature who help each other out.
An elephant and an olive baboon(东非彿狒)can be friends? It
sounds amazing, but it's true. You can find this pair of friends in the
grasslands of Africa. This unusual pair can help each other out like any
pair of good friends would. The elephant uses its front teeth to make a
waterhole in the sand, and it lets the olive baboon have a drink from this
"well"when it gets thirsty. In return, the baboon tells the elephant
when danger is near.It climbs up to the treetops and calls out so its
friend knows that it's time to move on.
In the sea world, the goby fish(虾虎鱼)and the shrimp are well-.
known for their friendship. The shrimp provides a home for the goby
fish, while the goby fish provides a guidance service for the almost blind
shrimp. You see,the goby has great eyesight()and stays close to
the shrimp. As the shrimp moves around, the shrimp is feeling the goby
with its antennae()from time to time to make sure it's still there.
If the goby senses danger,it will return to the home and the shrimp will
follow.
The langur()has a very good friendship with the chital deer
()While the langur eats in a tree,it drops leaves to the ground.
This is good for the deer because sometimes there's not much food. The
deer will follow the langur and eat whatever food that is dropped. And in
return, when the langur comes down from the tree, the deer will stamp
heavily to tell the langur if it senses danger.
24.How can an elephant help an olive baboon?
A.By providing protection.

C.By providing water.
D.By providing information.
25.What does a shrimp do when moving around in the sea?

B.It goes home from time to time.
C.It uses its antennae for directions.
D.It stays close to the goby fish.
P29
26.What do the olive baboon and the chital deer have in common?
A.They warn their friends of danger.
B.They live together with their friends
C.They have a good sense of smell.
D.They have good eyesight.
27.What would be the best title for the text?
A.Best friends forever
B.Friendship in the animal world

Despite the fact that parrots are well known for their long lives and
complex cognition(认知),it remains unknown whether the two traits
(特征)have influenced each other.
"The problem has been sourcing good quality data,"said Simeon
Smeele,a doctoral student at the Max Planck Institute of Animal
Behavior (MPI-AB)and lead author of a study published in Proceedings
of the Royal Society B that tried to solve this question.
Scientists from the MPI-AB and the Max Planck Institute for
Evolutionary Anthropology (MPI-EvA)teamed up with Species360 to
compile data from over 130,000 individual parrots sourced from over
1,000 zoos to find the average life span of 217 parrot species.
The analysis revealed an astonishing diversity in life expectancy,
ranging from an average of two years for the fig parrot up to an average of
30 years for the scarlet macaw.
Next, the team tried to determine whether or not parrots'renowned
cognitive abilities had any influence on their longevity.Their results
support the theory that increased brain size has enabled longer lifespans.
Because brain size relative to body size can be an indicator of
intelligence, the findings suggested that the parrots with larger brains were
able to survive for longer in the wild.
The scientists were surprised that factors such as diet,or the
greater developmental time required to develop larger brains, did not
lead to longer average lifespans."We would have expected the
developmental path to play a more important role because in primates it
is this developmental cost that explains the link between brain size and
longevity,"said Smeele.
In the future, the team plan to explore if sociality and cultural
learning in parrots might have also contributed to long lifespans.Smeele
said:"Large-brained birds might spend more time socially learning
foraging (techniques that have been around for multiple
generations. This increased learning period could potentially also explain
the longer life spans,as it takes more time but also makes the foraging
repertoire(全部技能)more adaptive.”

29.How did the researchers carry out their study?
A.By surveying over 1,000 zoos.
B.By examining parrots'brains.
C.By analyzing the collected data.
D.By observing parrots'behavior.

A group of wandering wild elephants have become an overnight
Internet hit globally. While the original group was made up of 16
elephants, two decided to return home after a week. The rest continued
their journey northward, stopping only for a short break in November
2020 to allow a newly-born elephant and its mother to recover.
Since leaving the reserve, the elephants have walked over 500
kilometers.Along the way, they entered farms for food and water,
walked through urban streets and even paid a visit to a car dealership(
帝
and a retirement home.No animals or people were hurt.
However, they destroyed more than 1 million worth of crops.
Researchers are not sure why the elephants decided to leave or
where they are heading. While they are known to leave their habitats in
够
search of food, this is the longest migration of wild elephants recorded in
China.Because of this, some guess that the elephants may be lost.
However, others think the elephants were forced to move due to
deforestation.Successful conservation efforts have almost doubled the
elephant population in the Xishuangbanna National Nature Reserve.
However, their natural habitat has been greatly reduced.
"As their populations increase, they search for more food,"Becky
Shu Chen said."You could say that the increase in agricultural land in
their region is like finding a big sweet shop, right on their doorstep."
The wandering herd's search for a suitable home was noticed by
locals who eagerly followed their daily movements on social media.
1
Adam Chang, assigned to deliver food to the elephants, says,"Before
this meeting,I just felt curious about animals. Now,I think I would
volunteer in animal rights groups to preserve those giant creatures."
32.Why did the wild elephants stop temporarily in November 2020?
A.To pay a visit to a car dealership.
B.To enjoy the food given by local people.
C.To wait for a baby elephant and its mom to recover.
D.To figure out whether they were in the right direction.
33.What can we learn from Paragraph 3?
数
A.Elephants never leave their home.
B.The elephants couldn't find their way home.
C.Elephants'population has decreased for human activities.
D.Scientists don't know why the elephants leave their home.
34.What do Adam Chang's words in the last paragraph mean?
烘
A.The elephants have the rights to move.
B.The elephants are annoyed about being followed
C.The elephants are helped by locals to find a suitable home.
D.The elephants help to raise people's awareness of animal
protection.
35.What is the text mainly about?
A.China's wandering wild elephants attract the world.
B.China's wandering elephants are losing their way.
C.China's wild elephants are touring through cities.
D.China's wild elephants are always on the move.
