①There is almost no water in the desert (沙漠), but many animals can live in it. How do these animals get water and stay alive?
②Everything is hot and dry in the daytime, but the night is cold. Plants often have dew on them in the early morning. This is because cold air can’t hold as much water as hot air. Small insects can drink the dew, and bigger animals eat the plants with the dew on them.
③Some small animals get water from the bodies of insects. Bigger animals get water from the bodies of small animals. This North American bird is called a roadrunner (走鹃). It runs fast and catches small snakes, lizards and scorpions.
④Some animals can wait many years for water. When the rain falls, baby shrimps (虾) come out of their eggs. They grow quickly and lay new eggs. Then the water dries up, and the shrimps die. But the new eggs do not die. They wait in the ground for the next rain. They can wait for 50 years.
⑤Most big animals can’t live in the desert because they need a few litres (升) of water every day. They can’t keep water in their bodies for a long time. But camels are different. They can drink 90 litres of water in ten minutes, and then drink nothing for a week.

Sea level is rising around the world, so there is more salt in fresh water on the farms near the sea. 1 Scientists call this process “salinization”. It comes from the word “saline”, which means a mixture (混合物) of salt and water.
2 Marc Van Rijsselberghe started with an experiment (实验). He put several kinds of plants in the mixture. He worked on the project with scientists from the Free University of Amsterdam. He cut a farm into eight areas. Then he watered them with different mixtures of fresh water and sea water. 3 It created water with eight levels (层次) of the mixture.
Mr. Van Rijsselberghe said he was able to harvest (收获) vegetables from most of the eight test areas. 4 But Mr. Van Rijsselberghe said they also had more sugar and salt, so they tasted better.
The farmer grew carrots, cabbage, onions and beetroot. But he found that potatoes grew better than the other vegetables in the mixture of sea and fresh water. 5 Farmers there would test the potatoes to see if they can be grown in those fields.

A. 完成图表。根据短文内容,完成图表格中所缺信息。(共 5 小题;每小题2分,计10分)
A tree can feel hungry when it needs food to grow, and it likes sugar very much. It’s not the same sugar in candies, but a special kind of sugar called glucose (葡萄糖) to make trees grow. Trees make their sugar in their leaves. The process is known as photosynthesis (光合作用).
For photosynthesis to happen, trees need three important things — sunlight, water and CO2. They get water through their roots and take in CO2 through stomata. Chlorophyll (叶绿素) helps make photosynthesis happen. It catches sunlight and finally turns water and CO2 into glucose and O2. Glucose is the tree’s food and animals and humans breathe O2 to live.
Chlorophyll uses the sunlight to make food for the tree. However, it doesn't absorb (吸收) green light well. As a result, it reflects this light to our eyes, making leaves appear green.
In spring and summer, there is enough chlorophyll in leaves and trees can take in enough sunshine, so they can grow well and the leaves appear green. Days become shorter and there is less sunshine when autumn comes. This makes trees know it’s time to get ready for winter. There is less sunlight and water for photosynthesis, and the green chlorophyll becomes less and less. Then, we begin to see yellow, red and orange leaves.
As winter is coming, the trees live on the food they keep when the weather is fine. They spend the season taking a rest, just like bears do! Bears go to a place for a good rest. And trees lose their leaves and stand up to fall asleep.

The hoiho, also known as the yellow-eyed penguin, won New Zealand's Bird of the Year. This is the second time that it has won the popular competition (竞赛). It's hoped that more people could help save this kind of endangered (濒危的) penguin.
New Zealand's Bird of the Year competition is quite a big activity. Lots of people take part in it to decide the winner. More than 50,000 people in New Zealand voted (投票) this year. For people there, nature is never far away, and they love birds there. “Birds are our heart and soul,” said a voter.
The hoiho — its name means “noise shouter” in the Maori language — is a shy bird thought to be the world's most uncommon penguin. It is only found on New Zealand's South and Chatham islands and on some islands south of the country. Numbers have dropped by 78% in the past 15 years. Now there are between 4,000 and 5,000 left in the world.
“This spotlight (聚光灯) couldn't have come at a better time,” said Nicola Toki, from Forest & Bird that runs the competition. Although they’ve tried their best to help the birds live on land, the birds can be sometimes caught and can't find enough food.
“The competition has raised awareness (意识), but what we really hope is that it can bring more help in hoiho protection,” said Charlie Buchan, campaign manager for the hoiho.

The cheetah, with its beautiful brown and yellow fur, is the fastest land animal. However, it is now in great danger. There are only about 5,000 cheetahs left, and their number is still decreasing.
