The three-month-old had got her tail caught in the ropes of an abandoned crab trap. Jim knew that if he left her, the dolphin would have little chance of survival. He cut her free and got in contact with the authorities. She was taken to Clear water Marine Aquarium (水族馆), but her injuries were so severe that she lost her tail. The aquarium staff named the baby dolphin Winter and she gradually learned how to swim again. Unfortunately, because of the way she was moving in the water without her tail, she was in danger of developing a problem with her spine (脊椎). Kevin Carroll and Dan Strzempka, who ran a company making artificial limbs, heard about the problem and had a brilliant idea. Kevin and Dan told the staff at the aquarium that they would make an artificial (人造的) tail for Winter! There were a lot of challenges that Kevin and Dan had to deal with along the way, like trying to fit an artificial tail on a playful young dolphin that doesn’t want to stay still! It took over fifty prototypes (模型) and a year and a half before Winter finally got her new 30-inch tail. After seeing her swim with it for the first time, Kevin said that the months of hard work had been truly worth it. Making the tail was only half the story, though. For Winter to be able to swim properly, the artificial tail needed to be held in place without damaging her skin. Specialists came up with a soft material that firmly holds the skin and doesn’t hurt. Designed especially for Winter, this material was so successful that “WintersGel” is now being used to make artificial limbs more comfortable for people with false arms and legs all around the world. In 2011 the tale (故事) was made into a film, “Dolphin Tale”, starring Winter herself. It’s about a dolphin that would have died, but survived because a few people cared. 24. What do we know about Jim? A. He worked at an aquarium. B. He freed a dolphin from a trap. C. He injured a dolphin accidentally. D. He kept a baby dolphin for three months. 25. What did Kevin and Dan decide to do according to paragraph 2? A. Teach Winter to swim. B. Set up a branch company. C. Help straighten Winter’s spine. D. Make a man-made tail for Winter. 26. Which of the following words can best describe Kevin and Dan’s work in paragraph 3? A. dangerous. B. imaginative. C. interesting. D. tough. 27. What could be the best title for the text? A. A tale of a tail. B. A lesson from a dolphin. C. An important survival skill. D. A chance encounter with a dolphin. C Yawning (打哈欠) is something we all do — maybe because we’re bored carrying out boring tasks or because we’re tired. Sometimes, just seeing other people yawn can set you off. But is this biological function really contagious (传染的), and why do we do it in the first place? Many of us think we open our mouths when we yawn to take in more oxygen, but in fact it appears that there is no clear biological reason. According to BBC Bitesize, new research suggests it might be because yawning cools the brain down and prevents it from overheating, much like the fan in your laptop. This might be why we’re more likely to feel sleepy and yawn in warm temperatures. What is clear is that we yawn more when we’re exhausted and ready for a nap, and we can’t control when we do it — once we start, there’s no stop ping us! But it’s also true that yawning is a very contagious behavior. John Drury, a researcher from Sussex University found in his research that there is a connection between yawning and our social group, specifically how close we are to the people in it. If we identify with the person who exhibits the behavior, we are likely to copy it too. Another research by the University of Nottingham in 2017 found similar results. They asked volunteers to watch other people yawn. They found their ability to resist yawning when others around them yawned was limited. And the urge to yawn was increased when people were told they couldn’t. They also found, when using electrical stimulation (刺激), that they were able to increase people’s desire to yawn. These findings, they say, could be useful in treating other conditions like Tourette syndrome (综合症), which involve the same area of the brain. What is certain is that a yawn can creep up on us at any time even when we think we’re not tired — but, I hope, not when you’re reading this article! 28. What is the purpose of the first paragraph? A. To share background information. B. To introduce the topic of the text. C. To present the main idea of the text. D. To encourage independent thinking. 29. According to paragraph 2, why do people yawn? A. To fight tiredness. B. To get more oxygen. C. To stop the brain breaking down. D. To lower the brain’s temperature. 30. The University of Nottingham researchers found that ________. A. yawning is not a contagious behavior B. the urge to yawn can’t be controlled C. people can be influenced by others’ yawning D. electrical stimulation helps hold back yawning 31. What is the text mainly about? A. The reasons for yawning. B. The influence of yawning. C. The value of yawning research. D. The methods of yawning research. D The idea of turning recycled plastic bottles into clothing is not new. During the past five years, a large number of clothing companies, businesses and environmental organizations have started turning plastics into clothing to deal with plastic pollution. But there’s a problem with this method. Research now shows that microfibers (微纤维) could be the biggest source of plastic in the sea. Dr. Mark Browne in Santa Barbara, California, has been studying plastic pollution and microfibers for 10 years. He explains that every time synthetic (合成) clothes go into a washing machine, a large number of plastic fibers fall off. Most washing machines can’t collect these microfibers. So every time the water gets out of a washing machine, microfibers enter the sewer and finally end up in the sea. In 2011, Browne wrote a paper stating that a single piece of synthetic clothing can produce more than 1,900 fibers per wash. Browne collected samples (样本) from seawater and freshwater sites around the world, and used a special way to examine each sample. He discovered that every single water sample contained microfibers. This is bad news for a number of reasons. Plastic can cause harm to sea life when eaten. Studies have also shown that plastic can take in other pollutants. Based on this evidence, it may seem surprising that companies and organizations have chosen to turn plastic waste into clothing as an environmental “solution”. Even though the science has been around for a while, Browne explains that he’s had a difficult time getting companies to listen. When he asked well-known clothing companies to support “Benign by Design”, his research project, which is trying to get clothes that have a bad effect on humans and the environment out of the market, Browne didn’t get a satisfying answer. Only one woman’s clothing company, Eileen Fisher, offered Browne funding. 32. What can we learn from the first paragraph? A. New microfibers have been discovered. B. Plastic-based clothes can’t handle the pollution problem. C. Plastic waste has been well dealt with. D. Recycled clothes have gained wide popularity. 33. What’s the main idea of the second paragraph? A. How to wash synthetic clothes. B. How to prevent plastic pollution. C. How microfibers end up in the sea. D. How synthetic clothes relate to microfibers. 34. Which of the following is true about the “Benign by Design” project? A. It has achieved great success. B. It is facing some difficulties. C. It is supported by many firms. D. It hasn’t got anything done. 35. What’s the best title for the text? A. Recycled plastic clothing: solution or pollution? B. The impact of Microfibers on the sea C. Environmental protection: moving forward or backward? D. The benefit of clothes made from plastic bottles 第二节(共5小题; 每小题2.5分, 满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文, 从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 How to Have a Successful Teenage Life Everyone wants to succeed in their life, don’t they?
