Unit 1 I Love Sports
Lesson 6 (Wrap up & Let’s explore)
I. Teaching Aims
1. Students can name the sports: football, volleyball, swimming, running, jumping.
2. Students can use "can" and "can't" to talk about abilities correctly.
3. Students can read and understand the "Play to win" game and complete the tasks.
4. Students can learn about animal sports stars and tell the class about one animal.
5. Students can check their own learning: name sports, use can/can't, talk about sports players.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key points:
1. The words: football, volleyball, swimming, running, jumping, basketball.
2. The sentence patterns: "Can he/she...?" "Yes, he/she can." / "No, he/she can't."
3. The numbers and speeds: km/h, m.
Difficult points:
1. To use "can" and "can't" accurately in real situations.
2. To understand the animal sports information and match the numbers with the animals.
3. To find out about an animal sports star and tell the class.
III. Teaching Tools
Textbook, blackboard and chalk, PPT (optional), word cards, animal picture cards, audio.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Warm-up (5 mins)
Teacher: Greet the students. Play a song about sports from the unit. Ask students to sing together.
Students: Sing the song and move their bodies.
[Purpose] To activate students' interest and review the unit topic.
Step 2 Play to win (12 mins)
Teacher: Show the "Play to win" game on the blackboard or PPT. Explain the rules: students take turns to pick a box. If the box says "Write the word", they write the word (e.g. b_s__tb__l -> basketball). If it says "Name it", they name the picture. If it says a question like "Can she swim?", they answer. If it says "He can ___", they fill in a verb.
Students: Play the game in groups. Each student picks one box and does the task. Other students check the answer.
[Purpose] To review the key words and sentence patterns in a fun way.
Step 3 Check it (5 mins)
Teacher: Ask students to read the "Now I can" checklist. Ask: "Can you name sports?" "Can you use can and can't?" "Can you talk about sports players?" Students raise their hands to show if they can do it.
Students: Check themselves and say "Yes, I can" or "No, I can't."
[Purpose] To help students realize what they have learned and what they still need to practice.
Step 4 Let's explore - Animal sports stars (13 mins)
Teacher: Show the pictures of animals. Ask: "Look and guess. Who wins?" Guide students to guess which animal can run fast, jump high, swim fast, jump far.
Teacher: Show the numbers (14 km/h, 44 km/h, 8.95 m, 6 m, 15 m, 2.45 m, 1.08 km/h, 10 km/h). Ask students to match the numbers with the animals.
Students: Look at the pictures, guess, and match the numbers. Discuss in pairs.
Teacher: Ask students to find out about one animal sports star. Give a model: "The cheetah is fast. It can run 44 km/h."
Students: Tell the class about an animal sports star. Use the sentence pattern: "The ___ can ___. "
[Purpose] To extend the topic to nature, develop students' reading and speaking skills, and arouse their interest in animals.
Step 5 Summary and homework (5 mins)
Teacher: Sum up the lesson. Ask: "What have we learned today?" Review the key words and sentences.
Homework: 1. Write three sentences about your friends' abilities using "can" and "can't". 2. Find out about one more animal sports star and tell your parents.
Students: Sum up with the teacher. Write down the homework.
[Purpose] To consolidate the learning and extend it to out-of-class life.

VI.
