Unit 1 I Love Sports
Lesson 5 (Hit it big)
I. Teaching Aims
1. Students can read the bar chart on page 10 and say the names of the sports shown in it.
2. Students can use "Can you swim?" "Can you play basketball?" to ask and answer about sports abilities.
3. Students can look at the chart again and write sentences such as "Six children can swim." "Four children can play basketball."
4. Students can work in groups to do a class survey about sports, draw a simple bar chart, and tell the class about their survey results.
5. Students develop the habit of doing sports and keeping fit.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key points:
1. Understanding and reading a simple bar chart about sports.
2. Using the pattern "Can you + verb?" to ask questions and giving answers "Yes, I can." / "No, I can't."
3. Writing simple sentences to describe chart data: "X children can + sport."
Difficult points:
1. Reading numbers from the bar chart and matching them with the correct sports.
2. Organising survey results and presenting them in complete sentences to the class.
III. Teaching Tools
Textbook (Module 1 Unit 1, pp.10-11), blackboard, chalk, PPT (optional), sport picture cards, survey worksheet, coloured markers.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 mins)
Teacher shows the bar chart on page 10 and asks students to look at it and say the names of the sports they can see.
T: "Look at the picture. What sports can you see in the chart?"
Ss: "I can see swimming. / I can see basketball."
Teacher writes the sport names on the blackboard and reviews them with the class.
[Purpose: To activate students' existing vocabulary about sports and lead them into the topic of the lesson naturally.]
Step 2 Practice (10 mins)
Teacher guides students to do Exercise 2 on page 10: "Look again. Find and write."
1. Teacher reads the first sentence with students: "Six children can swim." Then asks students to find the answers for sentences 2-4 by themselves.
2. Students check their answers with a partner. Teacher checks with the whole class and writes the answers on the blackboard.
T: "How many children can play basketball?"
Ss: "Four children can play basketball."
[Purpose: To train students' ability to read charts and extract key information. Pair checking gives every student a chance to practise.]
Step 3 Group Work (12 mins)
Teacher asks students to work in groups of four to do a survey (Exercise 3, page 11).
1. Teacher demonstrates with one student first:
T: "Can you swim?"
S: "Yes, I can." / "No, I can't."
2. Each group member asks each other "Can you swim/play football/basketball/...?" and records the answers in the chart.
3. Students fill in the chart and write the results, for example: "swimming ___ ___ ___"
[Purpose: To practise the target language in a real-life context. Group work lowers the affective filter and gives shy students more chances to speak.]
Step 4 Presentation (8 mins)
Teacher invites some groups to come to the front and tell the class about their survey (Exercise 4, page 11).
1. A student stands up and says: "Five children can swim. Three children can play basketball..."
2. Other students listen carefully and check if the numbers are correct.
3. Teacher gives positive feedback and gentle corrections when necessary.
[Purpose: To develop students' speaking confidence and listening skills. Public sharing builds a sense of achievement.]
Step 5 Summary and Homework (5 mins)
1. Teacher summarises the key sentences written on the blackboard and asks students to read them together one more time.
2. Homework:
a. Draw a bar chart about your family members' favourite sports at home.
b. Practice saying: "In my family, X people can swim/play football..."
[Purpose: Summary helps consolidate the key language. Homework extends the learning to students' daily life.]
V. Blackboard Design

VI. 教学反思
本课围绕"Do a class survey about sports"展开,整体教学流程较顺畅。
