Can’t you see that you can’t possibly make a difference here?” The girl smiled, bent down and picked up another starfish, and as she threw it back into the sea, she answered, “If I hadn’t thrown it back, it would have died. Zheng was born in Hirado, Japan to a Japanese mother and a Chinese father. His father was given an official position by the Ming Dynasty, so the family moved to Fujian Province at seven. Zheng was given a Confucian education in Nanjing in 1644. The next year, the Ming Dynasty gave way to the Qing Dynasty. When the Qing Dynasty forces entered Fujian, his father surrendered (投降). But Zheng, being against his father’s orders, made up his mind to rebuild the Ming Dynasty and began to build up land and naval (海军的) forces. Over the next 12 years, Zheng had built a strong position on the Fujian coast, centred on the islands of Xiamen and Jinmen. In 1659, Zheng carried out one of his most important actions. With a force of more than 100,000 up the Yangtze River, he succeeded. There, however, wrong decisions led to a terrible loss. Facing increasing pressure, he hit upon the plan of taking Taiwan from the Dutch (荷兰人). In 1661, he landed on Taiwan and fought for nine months. At last, the Dutch surrendered and left Tainan. Zheng then set up a governing system, settled the island with his soldiers and families from Fujian and spread Chinese culture. His larger goals were cut short by his death in 1662. At last, Zheng’s plans failed, but he became amazingly popular all over the world. In Japan, the famous play, The battles of Koxinga (1715), made Zheng well known to Japanese. In Europe, Zheng was famous for driving the Dutch away. In China, he soon became a popular spirit and cultural hero to the early Chinese in Taiwan. On the official level, in 1875 the Qing government recognised him as a symbol of loyalty (忠诚) and built a temple to honour him in Taiwan. Today, Zheng Chenggong is still remembered as a national hero in Chinese history. 9. What is Zheng Chenggong best known for? A. Raising a powerful navy in Fujian. B. Fighting against the Qing Dynasty. C. Taking control of Taiwan for China. D. Building many temples in Fujian. 10. What is the right order of the following events about Zheng Chenggong? ① He built a strong position on the Fujian coast. ② He received traditional education in Nanjing. ③ He decided to fight against the Qing Dynasty. ④ He drove the Dutch away with his soldiers. A. ②③①④ B. ②①④③ C. ①②④③ D. ③②①④ 11. How does the writer show the popularity of Zheng Chenggong in the last paragraph? A. By listing numbers. B. By giving examples. C. By making comparisons. D. By telling a short story. 12. What’s the best title for this passage? A. The Rise and Fall of Dynasties B. A Final Battle against the Dutch C. The Man Who Took Back Taiwan D. The History of Ming and Qing Dynasties D White Dew, known as Bailu in Chinese, is the 15th solar term of the traditional Chinese 24 solar terms. It usually arrives around September 7 to 9 every year. Unlike the slight coolness in early autumn, White Dew marks the official coming of real cool autumn. As temperatures drop gradually, water vapor in the night air condenses into white dewdrops on grass and leaves, which gives this solar term its beautiful name. There is a famous old saying in China, “Each night after White Dew brings cooler weather.” After White Dew, cold air becomes more active across the country. The temperature difference between day and night becomes much larger. People can clearly feel the end of summer heat and the arrival of refreshing autumn wind. This natural change not only influences the climate, but also shapes rich traditional customs that have lasted for hundreds of years. Many unique folk customs are closely connected with White Dew. Collecting fresh dewdrops is the most classic tradition. Ancient Chinese people believed that the pure white dew gathered at dawn could help relieve dryness and bring health. Drinking White Dew tea is another popular custom. The tea picked during White Dew tastes fresh and mild, winning great praise from local people. Besides, people living near Taihu Lake hold grand ceremonies to honor Dayu, who conquered floods and protected local people. In traditional Chinese health preservation ideas, White Dew is a key time to prevent autumn dryness. Experts suggest that people should eat moistening food such as pears, honey and lotus roots. Meanwhile, citizens are advised to add clothes in time in the morning and evening to avoid catching cold, because the temperature changes sharply during this period. As a precious part of Chinese traditional culture, White Dew carries ancient people’s wisdom of living in harmony with nature. It reminds modern people to observe natural changes and respect seasonal rules. These traditional solar term cultures are important cultural treasures that deserve permanent inheritance and promotion. 13. Why is the solar term named White Dew? A. Because the daytime temperature turns cool B. Because white dewdrops form on plants at night C. Because there is heavy fog every morning D. Because summer heat disappears completely 14. What is the main idea of Paragraph 2? A. The origin of Chinese old sayings B. The climate features of White Dew C. The influence of summer heat D. The history of traditional customs 15. What custom do Taihu Lake residents have during White Dew? A. Holding ceremonies to honor Dayu B. Selling fresh seasonal fruits C. Collecting dewdrops for neighbors D. Drinking all kinds of herbal tea 16. What is the best title for the passage? A. The Changes of Autumn Temperatures B. Useful Autumn Health Knowledge C. White Dew: Culture and Customs of Real Autumn D. The History of 24 Solar Terms 第二节 阅读短文,从下面所给选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项,其中有一个多余选项。 The entrance examination for Senior High School is very important for students. It’s a forest park in the north of Hebei. It’s about 400 km away from Beijing. For hundreds of years, the emperor went there to hunt. But in the 1800s, things began to change. There were forest fires and wars, and people cut down many trees. Saihanba slowly turned into a desert. When the forest disappeared, there were terrible sandstorms in the Beijing area. In the early 1960s, a group of scientists travelled to Saihanba to find a solution. They found an old tree in the middle of the desert. “Maybe we can still plant trees here,” they thought. In 1962, the first tree planters arrived in Saihanba. They worked in bad conditions. The cold and dry weather was the biggest challenge for their work. In winter, it got as cold as -40°C. Strong winds blew down many young trees. Three generations (代) of forest workers continued the hard work. Thanks to them, Saihanba is green again. It is the world’s biggest man-made forest today. There are hundreds of millions of trees there now. The forest helps provide the capital with clean air and water and there are fewer sandstorms in the Beijing area now.
