Cornell Note-Taking Method
The Cornell method of taking notes was developed by Dr. Walter Pauk of Cornell University in the 1950s. It is a widely used system for noting material from a lecture or reading, and for reviewing and remembering that material
Tips for Effective Use:
Self-Quiz Questions: Write simple questions in the cue column to test yourself later.
Summarize Even If Incomplete: Reflect on key points in your own words, even if your notes aren’t perfect.
Next Steps: Add actions you need to take in the summary to keep learning on track.
Use Your Notes to Study
Concentrate on the left-hand column and summary at the bottom. These contain the most important points you will need for your assignment or exam.
Cover the right side of the page(the note-taking column)with your hand or another sheet of paper. Quiz yourself by giving answers to the potential questions that you included in the left column. Then uncover the right side and check your comprehension.
Reviewing frequently over a longer period of time, rather than cramming before a test, will greatly increase your memory and deepen your understanding of course material. With your effective notes made using the Cornell system, you will be able to study efficiently and with minimal stress.
21. What do Cue Column and Summary Column have in common?
A. Focus on main ideas. B. Be filled in during class.
C. Record detailed lecture content. D. Serve as decorative areas.
22. Which is the correct way to study with Cornell notes?
A. Rewrite full notes regularly. B. Cover notes and test recall before checking.
C. Skip the cue column during revision. D. Intensive memorization right before exams.
23. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To explain how to summarize lectures. B. To promote an effective note-taking method.
C. To emphasize the importance of reviewing notes. D. To show how Cornell invented a note-taking method.

I once thought that outward beauty was the only factor to become a great person. When I was young, I read many kinds of books, most of which described characters who were handsome or beautiful. So I thought that being beautiful was the only way to become a success.
As I grew up, the story of my best friend made me realize that outward beauty was not so important to make a person successful. She was so beautiful a girl that every classmate liked to chat with her, but she was very arrogant. In her opinion, she could get all she wanted because of her beauty, but all of her friends left her one by one! Only then did she come to know the importance of the beauty in a person’s heart, which changed her attitude and she made friends again.
Turning on TV, we can see many advertisements, most of which seem to give us a feeling that physical attractiveness is the most important thing. There seems to be a boom in plastic surgery. It is surprising that more and more people, especially girls and women, try it like the first man-made beauty in China, Hao Lulu. It is a common sense that attractive people can easily find work. Most good-looking guys usually get higher scores in the job interviews. But what is real beauty? I want to say that is inner beauty because those who have beauty in their soul are really beautiful persons.
As is known, the beauty judged with eyes is temporary, so we should concentrate on inner beauty. And if we make efforts to make our minds beautiful, we’ll live a happier life.
24. What did the author learn from her friend’s story?
A. It is terrible to be a beautiful girl.
B. It is not easy to make friends with beautiful girls.
C. Outer beauty is not so important to become a successful person.
D. Inner beauty is the most important to become a successful person.
25. What does the underlined word “arrogant” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A. self-important B. successful C. beautiful D. excellent
26. What is the author’s attitude to plastic surgery?
A. Positive. B. Negative. C. Indifferent. D. Unclear.
27. What is the text mainly about?
A. Inner beauty is the real beauty.
B. How do attractive persons become successful?
C. The key factor to find a good job is being attractive.
D. Plastic surgery is the best way to make a person more beautiful.
C 25. A 26. B 27. A
根据第二段“As I grew up, the story of my best friend made me realize that outward beauty was not so important to make a person successful.(随着我的成长,我最好的朋友的故事让我意识到外在美对一个人的成功并不是那么重要)”可知,作者从她朋友的故事中学到了外在美对成功人士来说并不是那么重要,故选C。
根据划线词后文“In her opinion, she could get all she wanted because of her beauty, but all of her friends left her one by one!(在她看来,她可以得到她想要的一切,因为她的美貌,但她所有的朋友都一个接一个地离开了她)”可知,作者的朋友以为有了美貌就可以得到一切,是个自负的人,故划线词意思是“自负的”,故选A。
根据倒数第二段“But what is real beauty? I want to say that is inner beauty because those who have beauty in their soul are really beautiful persons.(但是什么是真正的美呢?我想说那是内在美,因为那些灵魂中有美的人是真正美丽的人)”可推知,作者对整形手术的态度是消极的,故选B。
27. 主旨大意题。根据最后一段“As is known, the beauty judged with eyes is temporary, so we should concentrate on inner beauty. And if we make efforts to make our minds beautiful, we’ll live a happier life.(众所周知,用眼睛判断的美是暂时的,所以我们应该专注于内在美。如果我们努力使我们的心灵美丽,我们就会过上更幸福的生活)”结合文章主要说明了作者受到书籍影响,非常重视外在美,以为只要漂亮就能成为一个成功的人,面试中也能得高分,这也正是整容手术越来越受欢迎的原因,而朋友的经历让作者深刻认识到,内在美才是真正的美。可知,这篇文章的主要内容是内在美才是真正的美,故选A。
C
Most of us have heard our family and friends say when looking at a baby, “Wow, she not only looks like her father but also behaves like him.” This represents one of the most essential elements of personality development in children. It is the personality of the parents that a child is first exposed to. Personality development in children is a gradual process. Parents need to be patient and have realistic expectations for their children.
Babies are born with certain personality traits(特征). Some are calm and quiet while others are active and challenge-seeking; some have regular patterns for eating, sleeping and elimination(排泄)while others have
changing daily routines; some are shy and will not even smile at neighbours, yet others are outgoing, jumping out of their parents’ arms.
Be an observant parent and take notes of your baby’s personality. Once you know your little one, you can promote their personality development by honing(磨练)their strengths and working on weaknesses. Remember babies are ever-changing, so you need to stay observant. Babies learn from parents and other caregivers and constantly change.
Parental roles are crucial for personality development in children. The first “skills trainer” is the baby’s mother, followed by the father and other family members. From the earliest days, parents should observe their baby's behaviour and gently guide certain traits.
If your baby is shy around newcomers, make small efforts to teach the baby to be friendly. Sit near the visitor and if you can hold the person’s hand or play a small game with the person, you can ask the person to hold a toy and then hold out your hand while holding your baby’s hand in yours and ask for the toy.
Similarly, if your baby is strong-willed and wilful, make efforts to distract the baby so that he or she does not “win” by crying or throwing a mini tantrum(发脾气). Play and gentle persuasion are ideal ways to deal with different baby personalities. Learn to be firm so that the baby understands you are the pack leader. Once leadership is established, it is much easier to teach a baby the subtle difference between “yes” and “no”.
28. What is implied in the first paragraph?
A. Parents shape babies’ personality totally. B. It is easy to change children's personality.
C. It costs time for a child to be like parents. D. Parents’ personality first influences kids.
29. Why is it necessary for parents to be aware of their baby’s personality?
A. To play the role of “skills trainer” for their baby. B. To improve their baby’s personality when needed.
C. To stop the baby's personality changing too much. D. To take critical measures to make the baby perfect.
30. How does the author give guidance in personality development in children?
A. By asking questions. B. By following traditions.
C. By setting examples. D. By doing experiments.
31. What should the parents do if the baby “intends to win” by crying or losing temper?
A. Distract the baby, be firm to lead. B. Give in to stop the baby’s tantrums.
C. Ignore till the baby calms down. D. Play to develop the baby’s personality.
C 29. B 30. C 31. A
根据文章第三段“Once you know your little one, you can promote their personality development by honing their strengths and working on weaknesses.(一旦你了解了你的孩子,你就可以通过磨练他们的优点并改进缺点来促进他们的性格发展)”可知,了解孩子性格的目的是为了能够在需要时改善其性格发展,故选B。
根据文章第五段“Sit near the visitor and if you can hold the person’s hand or play a small game with the person, you can ask the person to hold a toy and then hold out your hand while holding your baby’s hand in yours and ask for the toy.(坐在访客旁边,如果你能握住对方的手或与其玩一个小游戏,你可以让对方拿一个玩具,然后你伸出手,同时把宝宝的手握在你的手里,去要那个玩具)”可知,作者是通过父母亲身示范(如何互动、如何提出请求)来提供指导的,即“树立榜样”,故选C。
根据文章最后一段“Similarly, if your baby is strong-willed and wilful, make efforts to distract the baby so that he or she does not ‘win’ by crying or throwing a mini tantrum.(相似地,如果你的宝宝意志坚强且任性,要努力分散他的注意力,这样他就不会通过哭闹或耍小脾气来“赢”)”以及“Learn to be firm so that the baby understands you are the pack leader.(学会坚定,让宝宝明白你才是领导者)”可推知,父母应采取分散注意力和坚定领导的方式应对,故选A。
D
Beauty is only skin deep, but the measure of beauty is something that has worried humans for a very long time, and this is still a hot topic well into the 21st century. Whether male or female, people since ancient times have experienced judgement being passed by others based on their appearance, whether in stating preferences for marriage partners, in the securing of a job, or even in offering help to a stranger.
From a biological angle, human beings are able to appreciate their own as well as the outer appearance of others. This has its basis in the physical world around us, where many living things found in nature are closely linked to the perfection that the golden ratio(黄金比例)shows. So, the pure physical perfection in the build of a male happens when the shoulder-to-waist ratio of a man is equal to 1.618, the golden ratio. Bodybuilders thus train to get a perfect figure in males. Likewise, women try to have an hourglass figure, through whatever ways, whether by dieting and exercise, or through make-up or plastic surgery.
However, is beauty an objective feature or a subjective one considered through the “eye of the beholder(旁观者)”? Research carried out worldwide on beauty shows that the way people view beauty differs across time and culture. Hardly any common features exist across all cultures. This completely explains that cultural evaluations(评价)of beauty greatly differ.
Indeed, to borrow the words of the great poet, John Keats, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”, as long as we, as a human race, have the power to recognize and appreciate different forms of beauty in our fellow human beings, we will continue to increase our awareness of aesthetics(美学)and find a reason to admire and value the different aspects of beauty which make each of us uniquely beautiful.
32. What is the first paragraph mainly about?
A. The standard of beauty is measurable.
B. People are increasingly worried about appearance.
C. Good-looking people are perfect marriage partners.
D. Physical appearance is important throughout history.
33. What does the author want to show by mentioning the golden ratio?
A. People are born to appreciate appearance. B. Many living things in nature are perfect.
C. Men try different ways to build up strength. D. Women get into shape by dieting and exercise.
34. The author probably agrees that _________.
A. we can judge a book by its cover B. evaluations of beauty are unchangeable
C. beauty standards are closely related to culture D. beautiful face excuses someone from punishment
35. What is stressed in the last paragraph?
A. Different aspects of our life are affected by aesthetics.
B. Beauty can be found in different aesthetic standards.
C. Human beings have the right to create beauty.
D. Poems have the power to express beauty.
D 33. A 34. C 35. B
根据第一段的内容“Beauty is only skin deep, but the measure of beauty is something that has worried humans for a very long time, and this is still a hot topic well into the 21st century, whether male or female, people since ancient times have experienced judgement being passed by others based on their appearance, whether in stating preferences for marriage partners, in the securing of a job, or even in offering help to a stranger.(美只是肤浅的,但衡量美是人类长期以来一直担心的事情,这在21世纪仍然是一个热门话题,无论是男性还是女性,自古以来人们就经历过别人根据他们的外表来判断,无论是在说明对婚姻伴侣的偏好,在确保工作,甚至在向陌生人提供帮助时)”可知,文章第一段主要讲述了人类长久以来一直担心美的衡量标准,从古至今,人们的外貌一直是评判的焦点,无论在选择婚姻伴侣、求职还是帮助陌生人时都可能受到外貌的影响。
根据第二段中“From a biological angle, human beings are able to appreciate their own as well as the outer appearance of others. This has its basis in the physical world around us, where many living things found in nature are closely linked to the perfection that the golden ratio(黄金比例)shows.(从生物学的角度来看,人类不仅能欣赏他人的外表,也能欣赏自己的外表。这在我们周围的物质世界中有其基础,在自然界中发现的许多生物都与黄金比例所显示的完美密切相关)”可知,作者提到黄金比例,是为了说明人类欣赏自己和他人外貌的能力是有基础的,这个基础就是我们周围的物理世界,自然界中的许多生物都与黄金比例所展现的完美紧密相连。因此,作者想要通过提到黄金比例来表明人们天生就具有欣赏外貌的能力,故选A。
34. 细节理解题。根据文章第三段“ Research carried out worldwide on beauty shows that the way people view beauty differs across time and culture. Hardly any common features exist across all cultures. This completely explains that cultural evaluations(评价)of beauty greatly differ.(世界各地对美的研究表明,人们对美的看法随时间和文化的不同而不同。几乎所有文化之间都没有共同的特征。这完全解释了不同文化对美的评价存在巨大差异)”可知,不同的文化之间对于美的看法是不同的,几乎所有文化之间都没有共同的特征,由此推断作者可能同意美的标准与文化密切相关,故选C。
35. 推理判断题。根据最后一段“Indeed, to borrow the words of the great poet, John Keats, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever”, as long as we, as a human race, have the power to recognize and appreciate different forms of beauty in our fellow human beings, we will continue to increase our awareness of aesthetics(美学)and find a reason to admire and value the different aspects of beauty which make each of us uniquely beautiful.(的确,借用伟大诗人约翰·济慈的话,‘美的事物永远是一种快乐’,只要我们作为人类,有能力认识和欣赏我们人类同胞中不同形式的美,我们就会不断提高我们的审美意识,并找到理由去欣赏和重视美的不同方面,这些方面使我们每个人都变得独特美丽)” 可知,文章最后一段主要讲述了只要我们人类有能力认识和欣赏我们同类身上不同形式的美,我们就会继续提高我们的审美意识,并找到欣赏和珍视使我们每个人独特美丽的不同方面的理由。

Balancing Study and Exercise
Senior high school students often feel that there are not enough hours in a day. Between classes, homework and exams, exercise is usually the first thing to give up. ___36___ Here is how to fit both into a busy week.
Start small. Many students decide to run for an hour every day, and then stop after three days because their bodies ache. ___37___ Twenty minutes three times a week is a good beginning. When it becomes a habit, add more.
Put exercise in your timetable. If exercise is not written down, it will not happen. ___38___ Treat it like a lesson that you cannot miss. In this way, you will stop feeling that you are “wasting” study time.
Choose an activity you enjoy. ___39___ If you hate running, try badminton, swimming or dancing. When you enjoy what you are doing, you will not need to force yourself.
Exercise with others. Joining a friend or a club makes it much harder to give up. ___40___ Also, talking with friends while you exercise is a good way to reduce stress.
Remember: a healthy body supports a sharp mind. You are not choosing between study and sport—you are choosing both.
A. However, giving up exercise is not the answer.
B. It is better to begin with something you can manage.
C. Nobody can keep exercising if it feels like a punishment.
D. For example, put on your sports shoes as soon as you get home.
E. You will feel that you are letting someone down if you do not go.
F. In fact, regular exercise can make your study time more effective.

56. requires 57. a 58. to 59. themselves 60. responsibility
61. younger 62. to be built 63. that/which 64. if 65. trusted
to为介词,后接动名词作宾语,且“the key to doing sth.”

Already Perfect
Each one of us struggles with self-worth to some degree. I spent much of my time attempting to achieve perfection in every aspect of my life. What I didn’t realize was that in my efforts to be perfect, I almost lost my life.
During my childhood, I wanted everyone’s praise and acceptance. After I graduated from high school, my struggles with self-worth increased. I began to put pressure on myself to succeed in the adult world. Meanwhile, I wasn’t feeling very confident and successful. I started to believe that my difficulties and “failures” in life were caused by my weight. I had always been a thin-to-average sized person. Suddenly, I was convinced that I was overweight. In my mind, I was FAT!
Slowly, I began to control my food by trying to diet, but nothing seemed to work. I continued to reduce what I ate each day and told myself that I would succeed, and in turn, I felt good about myself.
People around me began to notice my weight loss. At first, they weren’t alarmed; maybe some were even envious. But then the comments showed some concern. “You’re losing too much weight.” “Elisa, you’re so thin.” “You look sick.” “You’ll die if you keep this up.” All their words only made me believe that I was on the right path, getting closer to “perfection.”
My poor nutrition began to cause me to lose sleep. I found it hard to concentrate on my work or to focus on anything for a long time. I was pushing myself harder and harder at the gym, struggling to burn fat. My parents tried to stop me but I disagreed that I had a problem. None of my clothes fit, and it was hard to buy any, since I had become too thin!
注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
Paragraph 1:
Then one night, I couldn’t sleep again, and my heart beat its way out of my chest. _____________________
__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
Then one night, I couldn’t sleep again, and my heart beat its way out of my chest. I tried to relax, but I couldn’t. The beating became so rapid and so strong that I could no longer breathe. Really scared and ill, I felt I was going to die. Knowing that help was needed, I stood up, went towards the door, and immediately fell down, letting out a cry of pain. Awakened by the unusual sound, my parents came in to see what had happened. Shocked and worried, they rushed me to the hospital. It took doctors and nurses several hours to bring me back to life.
When I lay on the hospital bed, I began to rethink what I did to my body. I decided to stop my foolish way of losing weight and pursuing perfection. Instead, I must be confident of myself and stay committed to being healthy. I now use my intelligence, talents and acts of kindness to express myself. This is true beauty, and it has nothing to do with the size of my body. With my experience of trying to be “perfect” on the outside, I had forgotten who I was on the inside. What I know now is that we are — each and every one of us — already perfect.
①试图做:try to do/attempt to do
②决定做:decide to do/be determined to do
③表达:express/convey
①感到害怕的:be scared/be panic-stricken
②震惊的:shocked/stunned
1. Knowing that help was needed, I stood up, went towards the door, and immediately fell down, letting out a cry of pain.(使用现在分词短语作状语和that引导的宾语从句)

Exercise with others. Joining a friend or a club makes it much harder to give up. ___40___ Also, talking with friends while you exercise is a good way to reduce stress.
Remember: a healthy body supports a sharp mind. You are not choosing between study and sport—you are choosing both.

C. Nobody can keep exercising if it feels like a punishment.

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;

B

注意:1. 续写词数应为150左右;
