Everyone knows some teachers who go out of their way to help their students. This year, our school's Teacher Thank-You Week starts on 2 September. To celebrate it, we asked some students tc make cards to thank their favourite teachers. Let's take a look.
To Mr Harrison
You never laughed at my "silly” physics questions in class. Instead, you always said, "That's a good way.to think. Let's explore it further."
-Elena,Grade 8
To Mrs Carter
You stayed after school to help me with maths when I was about to give up. More importantly, you told me that being slow at something doesn't mean being incapable.
-Marcus,Grade 9.
To Ms Jones
You were the first adult to notice I was quiet not because I had nothing to say, but because I was afraid of being wrong. Thank you for creating a classroom where mistakes are just steps, not failures.
-Priya,Grade 8
To Mr Ortiz
You didn't just teach us history - you taught us to question the textbooks, to look for missing voices, and to think before agreeing. That changes how I see the world.

When my family moved to New York, I felt upset. I missed my old life and found it hard to accept the change. “I don't belong here," I told my parents. "I have nofriends and nothing to do."
Hoping to make me feel better, my parents took me to a garden one afternoon. Volunteers moved among the flowers, carefully taking care of each plant. We met Vera, a friendly volunteer. She talked with us for a while, and before I realized it, she invited me to join them. I accepted her invitation happily.
Later, I met John, an old gardener. The first time we met, John showed me a bright flower. Yet with a light touch, its petals(花瓣)fell away. "It's already dead,” he said. Then he pointed to a flowerless plant."This one will bloom(开花)soon.”I began to understand that things are not always what they seem.
In the following months, I kept returning to the garden. Under John's guidance, I learnt about flowers, and slowly, about life.Without noticing it, I began to feel less lonely. One day, I told him I was afraid of starting a new school. He didn't answer at once.Instead,he led me to a higher place and asked me to look over the garden. From there, some parts of the garden seemed bigger than others, although they were actually the same.
"It depends on how you see it," hesaid softly.“You can see your new school as something scary, or you can see it as an opportunity."
When school began, I chose to see things in a newway.Step by step, I found my place. Looking back, I realize that sometimes, a
small change in the way we see things can make all the difference.根据材料内容选择最佳答案。

Have you ever kept doing something you no longer enjoyed, just because you had already spent a lot of time or money on it? This way of thinking is called the “sunk cost fallacy(沉没成本谬误)”.
A"sunk cost” is something you cannot get back. It can be money, time or effort that you have already spent. People often don't want to give up after putting so much into something. As a result, they continue doing things that are no longer useful or enjoyable. Some may keep trying to win a prize from a claw machine(抓娃娃机) after spending many coins. Others may continue watching a boring movie because they already bought a ticket. In the same way, some students might choose to stay on university courses they don't like because they have already finished several terms.
The problem is that the past cannot be changed. Spending more money on a claw machine will not make winning easier. Continuing a course that you're not interested in may only waste more time and energy. The same thing can happen in friendships. Some people stay in toxic friendships simply because they have known each other for many years, even when those friendships no longer make them happy.
To avoid the sunk cost fallacy, people should focus on the future instead of the past. A useful question to ask is: “If I were making the choice today, would I still choose this?" If the answer is no, it may be better to stop and move on.
Understanding the sunk cost fallacy can help people make wiser decisions. Sometimes giving up is not a sign of failure.
Instead, it can be a smart way to protect your time, energy and happiness.
