Melbourne climber Bianca Adler has become the youngest Australian to reach the top of Mount
Qomolangma. The 18-year-old student reached the top of the world's highest mountain on Wednesday
morning.This success made her a record-breaking climber.
Last year,Bianca tried to climb the mountain but failed. While climbing the mountain, she still
had plenty of energy and was not afraid of the thin air,yet unexpected high winds and low temperatures
proved too much even for her rich climbing experience. She had to turn back just 400 meters from the
top.This year,she did not give up.Her mother,Fiona,shared the good news.She said Bianca
sounded a bit tired but very happy on the radio.Bianca told her parents that she felt good, though it
was very cold and windy at the top.
Safety was very important for this trip.To avoid the long line of people and getting cold in the
line,Bianca started her final climb in the dark.It was not for watching the sunrise, though many
climbers dream of that beautiful sight. Her mother explained that this was a small price to pay for a safe
and successful climb.Being there early meant she could climb at her own speed and stay warm.
Bianca is an experienced climber. She is already the youngest woman to climb two other famous
mountains,Manaslu and Ama Dablam.
On her way to the top of Qomolangma, she faced a dangerous area called the Khumbu Icefall.
Because of other dangers there, climbers had to wait at the base camp.Bianca used this waiting time
wisely. She climbed a nearby mountain and slept at the top so that her body could slowly deal with the
thin air. After reaching the top of Qomolangma, she took some photos and started to go down quickly.
At the time of writing, she was resting safely at Camp 4.Her mother reminded everyone that climbing
down is also a hard challenge.

Geda Qawla, who is 75,is having trouble remembering words from his native Ongota
language. He's one of the only five people who can still speak it.As he gets older,he finds it harder to
think of the names of things like trees and birds."I can feel it leaving me.The others try to help me
remember but they are the same;they are also forgetting and there's no one left to teach us,"he said.
Geda is afraid that as the remaining speakers age and pass away, the language may disappear with
them.
This is just one example of a bigger problem happening all over the world.Languages are
disappearing fast, with one dying every two weeks. If things don't change,by the end of this century,
half of the 7,000 languages we have now might be gone. The ones in the most danger are those that
aren't written down and those spoken by very few people. The main reason for this is that the world is
getting much closer.People who speak smaller languages are being pushed to stop using them and start
speaking bigger languages.More people moving to new places also adds to this,as they leave their
native languages behind and learn new ones.
However, some languages that were almost gone have been saved. This happened through long-
term efforts to bring them back to life. These efforts included teaching them in schools, using them in
the media, and even putting them on road signs. But for most languages, like Ongota, there isn't
enough money or support to do this.
At Arba Minch University, some researchers are trying to save the Ongota language by making a
dictionary. Some young Ongota people who have had an education also want to keep their language
alive. For Sava,an Italian expert who studies people and their cultures, losing Ongota would be very
sad."When a language disappears,"he says,"you lose a special way of seeing the world that can't be
replaced(取代).”
28.What is the main difficulty for Geda Qawla now?
A.He cannot find young people to teach.
B.He struggles to remember some words.
C.He forgets how to speak with his family.
D.He fails to recognize the other four speakers.
29.What speeds up the language loss?
A.The worldwide connection.
B.People's less interest in old stories.
C.Fewer local public road signs.
D.Rapid growth of local populations.
30.What do we know about bringing back endangered languages?
A.It requires continued hard work.
B.It gets plenty of money support.
C.It mainly depends on big media.
D.It works well for most languages.
31.Why does the author mention Sava in the last paragraph?
A.To praise young local language users.
B.To show the value of a language.
C.To describe Ongota's daily traditions.
D.To introduce his dictionary project.

Across China, wind turbines(风力涡轮机)now stand on hills. They also stand in deserts and
near the coast.Long lines carry power from windy western areas to busy cities in the east.
Last year,China added more wind power than other countries put together.Chinese companies are
also selling more machines to the factories in other countries. This plan looks very smart. For China,
clean energy is not only about protecting nature. It is also about keeping the country safe.If the country
gets more power from wind and the sun, high oil prices will not hurt it much. Many countries want to
learn from China's experience of developing clean energy.
Wind farms take a long time to build.Solar panels(太阳能板)can go up fast..And wind farms
need a strong base. They need a windy place and good weather. Also,we need long lines to send
power to cities.Sea wind farms are even harder to build. As wind farms grow, new challenges also
appear. For example, the parts of old turbines are very large and hard to reuse. To solve this,Chinese
companies are finding better ways to use these old parts again. This makes wind power truly green from
start to finish.
Although there are some problems, clean energy is still a top goal for China.Wind power gives us
cleaner power. It helps make our energy supply (strong and makes sure our lights stay on in
hard times. At the same time, wind power is economical,so it can give affordable power to more and
more places.Wind power works well together with solar power.Together they help cut air pollution.
More young people are joining this field to create new green technology.People believe wind energy will
play a bigger role in our daily life in the near future, especially in small towns.
32.What is one major benefit of China's development of wind power?
A.To sell turbines to local factories.
B.To stop oil prices from rising.
C.To help other countries build farms.
D.To protect nature and keep energy safe.
33.What can we say about wind farms?
A.Their old parts are easy to recycle.
B.They require strict building conditions
C.They can be set up in a short time.
D.Their costs are much lower.
34.What does the underlined word "economical"in the last paragraph probably mean?
A.Low-cost.
B.Reusable.
C.Popular.
D.Environment-friendly.
35.What is the main purpose of the text?
A.To show the use of solar energy in China.
B.To ask people to build more wind farms.
C.To introduce China's wind power progress.
D.To compare energy prices in different areas.

Moving to a new school is never easy. When my family moved to a small town in England,I was
not familiar with anything in my new school. But here,I made an unexpected friend.
One rainy afternoon,I got lost.I was looking for the library, but I turned the wrong way and found
a quiet hallway.A soft sound came from behind a door-someone was playing the piano. The music
was so beautiful that I stopped. The door opened, and a thin boy looked at me."Sory,"I said."I got
lost.”
“It's okay,”he said quietly.“This is my hiding place.”
He told me his name was Ezra, and that everyone called him "the strange boy".He never spoke
in class and never joined the games in the yard. But in that music room, his fingers could tell stories
that his mouth never could. He had leamed to play by watching videos at home, because his family
could not pay for lessons.
We met there every day after school. He played, and I listened.I told him he should join the
school talent show, but he always shook his head and changed the subject. At last,he told me why.At
his old school,he had once played in front of the whole class. He made one small mistake, and
everyone laughed."I haven't played in front of people since then,he said.
For three weeks,I helped him practice.I told him again and again that a small mistake meant
nothing. Finally,he agreed, and I put his name on the show list before he changed his mind.
On the night of the show, the hall was full of students and parents.Backstage,Ezra's face was
white, and his hands were shaking. When the host called his name,he stood up-and froze, his eyes
full of fear. The whole hall went silent.
