B There are some differences between American English and British English. Some differences are quite interesting. When my friend Lily from London used the word “larder”, I didn’t know what it meant. Realizing I didn’t follow her, she used another word. I finally knew she wanted to find something to keep some food. The next word came up when we were planning a lunch date. She jotted down the date and time in her diary, while I marked my calendar. If she called me on the phone, she would ring me up. But if the line was busy, she would say the line was engaged. Most times, I can know what Lily means. Last week, she regretted sending her boys to watch an early morning tennis game without their fleeces. I thought that she meant without their jackets or something like that. Other times, we have to ask each other. She recently told me a funny tale about a pissed woman. I wondered what had made the lady angry. It turns out that pissed means drunk. Here is one more example. My British friend Jane was filling out a ticket at the grocery store recently. She asked the young man to help her if he had a rubber. When she noticed he didn’t follow her, she quickly asked for an eraser, which, in England, is often called a rubber. In order to communicate well with British people, we Americans should learn some words that the British use differently And I think people who learn English as a second language should also realize that there are differences between American English and British English. 24. When Lily used the word “larder”, she was probably looking for a ________. A. greenhouse B. foodstuff C. cupboard D. cookbook 25. According to the passage, in British English ________. A. the word “pissed” means angry B. the word “jacket” is often used C. the word “engaged” means tired D. the word “rubber” means eraser 26. What does the underlined phrase “jotted down” in Pargraph2 mean? A. Wrote down B. Cared about C. Looked for D. Settled down 27. What is the passage mainly about? A. The British way of using words. B. Some new words the writer’s British friends taught her. C. The reasons why Americans can’t follow the British at times. D. Some words used differently in British English and American English. C Some people think going to the gym takes time and effort, it often hurts, and it can be extremely boring. Most weight-related exercises are a combination of sets and reps (几次几组). In order to see any significant change from any one exercise, it will probably need to be repeated six to eight times, for a minimum of three sets, for about three months: Then there’s aerobics (有氧运动). For some, there’s nothing more boring than endless miles spent running on a treadmill (跑步机). But what if there is a way to reduce the boredom of exercise while still getting a good workout? Luckily for us, there’s virtual reality (VR). “In the past, playing video games was a sedentary (久坐不动的) experience,” says Jo Stauffer of the VR Heaitn-institute, “but VR changes all of that.” Many VR games are played while standing. In order to play properly, the players are forced to move around swinging their arms or using their legs. After an hour of this on a regular enough basis, it’s not surprising that many people unexpectedly find themselves a little fitter. There are already a number of virtual reality games which, deliberately or not, result in their players “getting a good sweat on” if played for enough time. For example, there’s a music’ game which forces players to shadow box (做空拳攻防练习) in order to hit the notes — that’s an upper-body workout. The benefit of VR has been noticed by one company. They want to take the whole experience into the gym. They are making a resistance machine, designed to be used in combination with a VR headset. Players challenge a virtual competitor in a series of games, which results in a 30-minute full-body workout. However, the cost of the equipment is expensive and there are safety concerns to be worked out, says J.P. Gownder from the consultancy Forrester. Although it’s early days, for those: of us who struggle to overcome the boredom of exercise, a new solution could be coming. And a world where a person can exercise and have fun at the same time might be something that many people would want-virtual or not. So don’t give up exercising. 28. What conclusion can we draw from the first paragraph? A. Most weight-related exercises nearly have no effect. B. Some people think exercising in the gym is difficult and tiring. C. Running on a treadmill won’t bring significant change. D. You’d better not go to the gym because of the risk of injury. 29. Compared with video games, VR games . A. bring more fun to play B. take people less free time C. are more likely to bring players health benefits D. are more popular with people nowadays 30. What can we know about the resistance machine? A. It has been widely used in the gym. B. There are some disadvantages of it. C. J.P. Gownder highly recommends it. D. When using it, people need to have a partner. 31. Which is the best title for the passage? A. Virtual exercise in the gym. B. Keep going to the gym C. The boredom of exercise D. The popularity of VR games D An Internet game — Stardew Valley has gone viral and become a heated issue by becoming the number one choice for teenagers in the world to play. The main character is a young farmer and the story is about escape to the country life, making the popularity of the game all the more surprising. The game is calm and relaxing and really the opposite to city life. It describes the countryside as a beautiful and peaceful place and its people as very caring and happy. The game developer believes that this is what young people desire today. He says the success of the Internet game is because teenagers want a happier and healthier life away from the pressures of deadlines and exams. He figures this game offers a form of escape from their fast and stressful lives. Despite this, many parents and teachers are worried about the effect this game is having on young people. Parents report that their children are just playing this game and neglecting everything else, using Stardew Valley as an excuse for not completing homework, or refusing to revise for exams, citing a need for a happier and less stressful life. One father, Paul McGregor, said his daughter Charlotte had changed a lot. He said, “She used to be in the school athletics team and loved the marathon, but now she only wants to play the game Stardew Valley and has been dropped from the team. She no longer completes her homework saying it doesn’t matter as she just wants to ‘escape to a new life’”. Dr. Elisa Carhart, an expert in child mental health, says that Internet can literally influence young people’s decisions in life, but believes that if a young person reacts as strongly as Charlotte, it’s likely that there are other reasons for the change in her behaviour. 32. Why is the Internet game — Stardew Valley so popular with teenagers? A. Because the main character is a farmer. B. Because the game describes the countryside as a peaceful place. C. Because it can provide teenagers with an escape from pressures. D. Because in the game people are caring and happy. 33. Which is closest in meaning to “neglecting” in paragraph 4? A. Paying no attention to. B. Making the most of. C. Feeling at home with. D. Complaining about. 34. What is probably Paul McGregor’s attitude towards the Stardew Valley? A. Opposed. B. Supportive. C. Indifferent. D. Tolerant. 35. What can we learn from Dr. Elisa Carhart’s words? A. Well begun is half done. B. One man’s meat is another man’s poison. C. Be a rainbow in somebody else’s cloud. D. Do not throw the baby out with the bathwater. 第二节(共5小题;每小题2.5分,满分12.5分) 阅读下面短文,从短文的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。 Deciding whether or not to take part in an extracurricular (课外的) activity can be a challenge. Before signing up to play on the volleyball team, first consider the advantages and disadvantages of such a decision. 36 Students are successful when they take part in many activities. They do well in their classes and feel more connected with school. Research shows that students taking part in extracurricular activities have better grades. Extracurricular activities also help students make new friends and maintain lasting relationships. 37 Even though we became friends a long time ago, we are still close today. While these activities have many advantages, students should consider the downside as well. 38 Doing extracurricular activities can be too much for students who do not perform good time management. Students need to be good at managing their time. Another downside of extracurricular activities involves transportation. 39 A few of my classmates joined the school’s cultural club. They later discovered that the members met after school. These students dropped out of the club because they had to catch their buses. Only you can decide if extracurricular activities are right for you. These activities can help you succeed in many areas of your life. 40 Are you up for a challenge? A. Some clubs met after school. B. We were both in the same age group. C. I met my best friend when we were on the swim team. D. One downside is that it can create a busy life for students. E. M: Let me have a look. It says five spoons. That seems too sweet. Let’s put one spoon less instead. W: All right. Text 4 W: Allen, just stay here. Don’t get into the sea; the waves are getting bigger. M: I see, and I like it here on the sand. Text 5 W: Before we go to the movie theatre, I have to stop at the bank and get some money. M: Don’t worry about that. This is my treat. Text 6 W: ⑥Wow, why is it a bit cold? I’m sure the weatherman said that today would be warmer. M: Look! The sun has come out.
