There was an old bookstore on the corner of my street. I discovered it one sunny afternoon when I was exploring the neighborhood. The moment I pushed open the door, a unique aroma (芳香) embraced me. The shelves were stuffed with books of every genre and age. I could see the spines of well-loved classics, rare first editions, and forgotten treasures. The owner, a middle-aged man with glasses and a warm smile, was busy tidying up. He greeted me and told me to feel free to look around. I started browsing and was immediately fascinated by a collection of old travelogues that seemed to hold the secrets of far-off lands.
Over the following weeks, I became a regular. I would spend hours there, losing myself in the pages of different books. Sometimes, the owner would recommend a particular book based on our conversations. His knowledge and passion for literature were truly inspiring.
However, change was on the horizon. The city was developing rapidly, and new, modern shops were replacing the old ones. One day, I noticed a sense of gloom in the bookstore. The owner informed me that duc to the skyrocketing rent and the competition from online bookstores, he was struggling to keep the doors open. It seemed that this little shelter of literature might soon disappear.
I was determined not to let that happen. I reached out to my schoolmates and local community groups. We organized a book fair in front of the bookstore, inviting local authors and artists to participate. We also set up an online crowdfunding page to collect donations. People from all over the neighborhood came to show their support. They bought books, donated money, and shared their own memories of the bookstore.
Thanks to the collective efforts, we managed to raise enough funds to cover the rent for a while. The bookstore survived this crisis. A community’s love and support can preserve something truly valuable. The old bookstore was not just a place to buy books; it was a cornerstone of our community’s cultural and emotional heritage, and it was worth every bit of the fight to save it.

Buried beneath the volcanic ash that had fallen on Herculaneum after Vesuvius erupted, hundreds of scrolls (卷轴) had kept their contents hidden for centuries. Only recently have they begun to reveal their secrets — thanks to artificial intelligence, a technology that appeared thousands of years after these documents were written.
Discovered amid the ruins of a luxurious residence, the Herculaneum scrolls are a collection of about 1,000 scrolls, alongside other relics whose significance has yet to be fully appreciated. Earlier attempts to unlock the secrets of these scrolls proved to be in vain, largely because the majority were so fragile (脆弱的) that any attempt to unroll them would certainly shatter them into pieces.
Until recently, the only practical method of reading their contents involved piecing together thousands of fragments — a process that, by estimates, might require 500 years to complete. Fortunately, a team led by Professor Seales had already pioneered a technique for virtually unwrapping an ancient scroll through X-ray tomography (断层摄影). Even this, however, proved insufficient to make the barely visible ink readable on the ancient documents, whose chemical composition differs from that of ink used in medieval times, and which remains largely invisible to the naked eye even when exposed to X-rays.
In 2019, the team devised a solution grounded in artificial intelligence that enabled them to see the ink, yet the approach demanded an enormous quantity of data. They therefore launched the Vesuvius Challenge, an initiative designed to accelerate the work, and released software alongside thousands of 3D X-ray images of fragments and two rolled-up scrolls, hoping that research groups worldwide would rise to the challenge.
Ultimately, a team of three students shared the grand prize. After training machine learning programs on the scans, they succeeded in reading 2,000 letters from the scroll. Having created a 3D scan of the text using a CT scan, they separated the scroll into several parts; a machine learning model — an application of AI — then detected the inked regions, thereby enabling them to decipher the text.
Mastro, a professor at Naples’ University, characterized the technique as revolutionary. “We worked literally day and night to study them,” he remarked, “but I am all the more excited that, by employing this method, we can reveal what has remained hidden in the scrolls for nearly 2,000 years.”
28. What issue was resolved with X-ray tomography?
A. Putting together divided pieces.
B. The fragile nature of the scrolls.
C. The difficulty in understanding ancient languages.
D. Showing the scrolls without opening them.
29. How did AI function in processing the scrolls?
A. By analyzing the chemistry. B. By unwrapping the scrolls.
C. By detecting the barely visible ink. D. By separating them with relics.
30. What does the underlined word “decipher” mean in paragraph 5?
A. Adapt. B. Arrange. C. Interpret. D. Summarize.
31. What is the passage mainly about?
A. Scrolls promote technological revolution.
B. AI advanced the way to read ancient scrolls.
C. New technology discovered relics in Vesuvius.
D Hidden secrets are recorded by archaeologists.

Have you ever caught yourself haunted by disturbing thoughts about something you have left unfinished? Perhaps a half-completed work project keeps you awake at night, or the suspenseful (扣人心弦的) plot of a novel you are reading continues to linger in your mind. There is a reason why it proves so difficult to stop thinking about uncompleted and interrupted tasks, and psychologists have termed this phenomenon the Zeigarnik effect (Z-effect).
The Zeigarnik effect was initially identified by a Russian psychologist named Bluma Zeigarnik, whose observation of the phenomenon took place while she was seated in a bustling Viennese restaurant. It was there that she noticed waiters demonstrating a superior memory for orders that had not been paid for. Once the bill had been settled, however, those same waiters found themselves struggling to recall the precise details of the orders they had just served.
Zeigarnik conducted a series of experiments in which participants, having been instructed to complete a set of straightforward tasks, ranging from putting puzzles together to solving mathematical problems, were deliberately interrupted midway through their work in half of the cases. The tasks having been assigned and half of them left unfinished, the participants were then asked, after an break of one hour, to describe what they had been engaged in. What her investigation subsequently revealed was that those whose work had been interrupted proved twice as likely to keep a memory of what they had been doing as those who had successfully finished their tasks.
We are living in an era of information explosion, and we require mental strategies to help us remember a vast amount of information. The Zcigarnik effect serves as clear proof. We maintain information in the short term by continually drawing it back into our awareness. By frequently contemplating (冥想) uncompleted tasks, we are more likely to keep them in mind until they are accomplished.
The Zeigarnik effect reveals a great deal about how memory operates, and you can employ it to your advantage. If you are struggling to memorize something important, momentary interruptions might be beneficial. Rather than merely repeating the information, review it several times, and then take a break. Nevertheless, leaving too many tasks unfinished can give rise to feelings of overwhelm and anxiety. Therefore, it is essential to apply this effect wisely in practical situations.
32. What is the typical characteristic of the Z-effect?
A. Stopping an uncompleted task. B. Tending to memorize unfinished tasks.
C. Performing terribly during a task. D. Trying to finish various tasks at a time.
33. What is the purpose of paragraph 3?
A. To clarify a concept. B. To test an assumption.
C. To explain the process of the experiments. D. To add background information.
34. Which is a practical application of the Z-effect?
A. Producing a drama with unexpected endings.
B. Keeping many windows open on your computer.
C. Airing ads during the tense moments in a TV series.
D. Reading a whole story in one breath without stop.
35. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Tricks of Developing Long-term Memory.
B. The Z-Effect: How to Boost Recall of Finished Tasks.
C. The Power of Completing Tasks Ahead of Schedule.
D. The Z-Effect: How Interruptions Enhance Memory.

阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
More than 30% of Gen Alpha children long to become social media creators, with around 32% of 12-15-year-olds naming “YouTuber” as their dream job. 36 This is where parental involvement becomes not just helpful, but vital, turning the risks into valuable teachable moments.
To that end, parents should communicate with kids in a curious and open manner rather than being critical. When children express the desire to be online influencers, parents should avoid shutting down their enthusiasm. 37 For example, they can ask why their children want to create online content and what they plan to post. By showing respect for their kids’ interests, parents build trust and naturally introduce safety topics like privacy settings and online boundaries.
Beyond that, parents should help children develop safe digital habits. They can set up accounts together to adjust privacy settings, turn off location tagging, and set strong passwords. Meanwhile, children must be taught not to share private details such as home addresses, school names and daily schedules. 38
Warning children against hidden online dangers is equally necessary. As would-be young influencers start gaining visibility, they may be targeted by scams that aim to steal personal data. 39 They also need to recognize ill-intentioned strangers and dangerous behavior, such as frequent personal messages, requests for secrecy, or pressure to share private photos.
Actually, children’s wish to create online content is a way to express their identity and creativity. 40 With proper parental guidance, young creators can build their voice without compromising their safety.
A. However, this pursuit has potential digital risks.
B. These measures can effectively minimize online risks.
C. Teenagers are willing to spend much time watching online videos.
D. Parents should fully understand teenagers’ craze for online creation.
E. Kids should learn to identify suspicious links, fake offers, and other traps.
F. Parents can help through open dialogue, practical habits, and risk awareness.
G. Instead, they need sincere communication to learn about their children’s ideas.
