I stopped to sip a few mouthfuls of water and consider my options. The sparse (稀疏的) shade from the trees offered little relief from the burning sun as I tried to make sense of the maps. The original plan was to stay overnight at a tourist park near Logue Brook Dam, where I would try and contact my wife, but I had no idea where I was. Wearily, I got up, remounted my bike and started to double back in the hope of finding definite trail markers, but this only added to the problem: the surrounding trees seemed to close in on me as I desperately looked around for landmarks — and the loud noise of the cicadas (蝉) was deafening.
After moving slowly along the sandy trail for about two hours, I was delighted to see cycle tracks that looked recent. Encouraged, I cycled on, keeping a sharp eye on the tracks. However, I soon realised that they were my own!
I was covering the same ground.
Discouraged, I suddenly stopped and laid my bike in the open in the hope it would be seen from the air, and backed to the base of a tree. I had no more water, and my tongue felt swollen. I felt sleepy as groups of flies settled on me in a vain attempt to find dampness.
A sudden warm gust of wind stirred me. I opened my eyes and stared at the shining heatwaves rising off the ground. I heard the distant sound of a motor and looked weakly skywards, but the sound disappeared. A while later I heard it again, but this time it sounded closer. I forced myself up and walked to where the sound was coming from. As I reached the top of the hill, I drew a sharp breath in disbelief. There before me was Logue Brook Dam, with boats pulling water skiers and people relaxing under gazebos (凉亭).
I returned to my bike, pushed it up the hill, and let it coast straight into the beautiful cool waters of the dam where I rolled about in my full cycling kit.
4. Why did the author stop and lay his bike in the open?
A. To repair the disabled bike. B. To take a nap under a tree.
C. To signal for potential rescue. D. To prevent further exhaustion.
5. What caused the author to realize he was cycling in circles?
A. The disappearance of trail markers. B. The increasingly loud cicada noises.
C. The change in sandy trail conditions. D. The recognition of his own bike tracks.
6. What does the description of cicadas and flies imply about the author?
A. He was awed at the abundant wildlife. B. The surroundings were becoming tougher.
C. His physical discomfort was intensifying. D. He unconsciously entered a dangerous zone.
7. What does the author mean by “let it coast straight into the waters” in the last paragraph?
A. Riding forcefully to enter the water. B. Pushing the bike towards the dam.
C. Freewheeling downhill to the water. D. Abandoning his bike near the shore.
C
Albert Einstein owed his brilliant mind to having a child-like sense of humour. Indeed, a number of studies have found an association between humour and intelligence. Researchers in Austria recently discovered that funny people, particularly those who enjoy dark humour, have higher IQs than their less funny fellows. They argue that it takes both cognitive (认知) and emotional ability to process and produce humour. Their analysis shows that funny people have higher intelligence, and they score lower in mood disturbance and aggressiveness.
In psychology we use the term “positive humour style” to refer to people who use humour to enhance relationships and reduce conflict. This type of humour is associated with relationship satisfaction, extroversion (外向性) and high self-respect. Having a humorous outlook on life is also a good coping strategy. It helps people better manage stress and challenges.
Not only do funny people make other people laugh, they also laugh more themselves. And laughter leads to brain changes, which may explain the link between humour and intelligence. Neuropsychological studies have found that experiencing positive emotional states, such as joy, fun and happiness, increases the production of dopamine (多巴胺) in the brain. Dopamine not only makes us feel great, it also opens up the learning centres of the brain, which enables and sustains more neural (神经) connections. As a result, we become more flexible and creative in our thinking, and better at solving problems. It also boosts our working memory.
Evidence suggests that humour actually bolster feelings of confidence, competence and status, making funny people very influential. Humour gets people to listen, helps communicate messages and aids learning. It is a powerful tool that many successful leaders use to enhance group work and organisational culture. Studies of positive organisations suggest the more fun we have at work the more productive we are, and the less likely we are to suffer burn-out.
Research on the use of humour in education also supports the concept that humour is an effective aid to learning. Several studies have demonstrated that lessons that are delivered with humour are more enjoyable for students, and also enhance students comprehension and recall of the topic.
8. What can we learn from the researchers in Austria?
A. Funny people are always emotional. B. People enjoy dark humour most.
C. Less funny people are aggressive. D. Humourous people have a brilliant mind.
9. What does the author intend to show in Paragraph 3?
A. The benefit of laughter. B. The reason of our brain changes.
C. The association of humor and intelligence. D. The way of being creative in thinking.
10. What’s the meaning of the underlined word “bolster”?
A. Combine. B. Increase. C. Explain. D. Distribute.
11. What can be concluded from the research in education?
A. Teachers are always humour in class.
B. Students can understand humour better in class.
C. Effective learning depends on students’ humour levels.
D. Humourous classes are more efficient for students.
D
People today are much cleverer than they were in previous generations. A study of 72 countries found that average IQs rose by 2.2 points per decade between 1948 and 2020. This stunning change is known as the Flynn Effect after James Flynn, the scientist who first noticed it. Flynn was initially confused by his discovery. It took millions of years for the brain to evolve. How could it improve so rapidly over just a few decades?
The answer is largely that people were becoming better nourished and mentally stimulated. Just as muscles need food and exercise to grow strong, the brain also needs the right nutrients and activity to develop. Kids today are much less likely to be malnourished (营养不良的) than they were in past decades, and more likely to go to school. Yet there is no room for satisfaction. In poor and middle-income countries, many children are still too ill-fed to reach the cognitive potential.
The world grows enough food, but several obstacles stop nutrients getting into young brains. One is war. Families sheltering around cannot risk out to plant or harvest, and some governments intentionally starve certain regions into submission. Another is disease. Hungry children fall sick more often, and the energy they spend battling bugs cannot be devoted to growing brains. Poverty is also a big part of the problem. But global data from UNICEF, an aid agency, show that although half the children with very restricted diets (including no more than two food groups) are indeed from poor families, the other half are not. Other factors, such as poor eating habits, are to blame as well. Research about how to overcome the obstacles is needed.
Some argue that human intelligence will matter less as people entrust (委托) their thinking to artificial intelligence. To assume this would be as foolish as betting 100 years ago that the invention of the car would make it unnecessary to walk. In the workplace, human intelligence and AI will probably assist each other. And brains are for the joy of thinking, as well as earning money. Steven Pinker of Harvard University calls human intelligence “a tailwind in life”, helping people adapt rationally to new challenges or a changing environment. For a modest price, the next generation can have a stronger tailwind. It would not only be wrong to refuse them the tailwind. It would be stupid.
12. What can we learn about the Flynn Effect?
A. Average IQs have risen fast in the past decades. B. Intelligence has been stable across generations.
C. People now are as intelligent as their ancestors. D. Better education leads to improved physical health.
13. What does the underlined sentence in paragraph 2 mean?
A. The Flynn Effect has reached its peak. B. Global problems continue despite IQ gains.
C. Society values human intelligence less. D. Malnutrition is merely a result of poverty.
14. What does the author think of artificial intelligence?
A. Useless. B. Unique. C. Beneficial. D. Ineffective.
15. What is the best title for the passage?
A. Stages of IQ Development B. Secrets to Rising IQs Worldwide
C. Insights Into Global IQ Trend D. Influence of the Flynn Effect

The experience of modern life is a constant stream of reviews where criticism is common, which makes us struggle both to give and receive it gracefully. ____16____
It’s not personal (even when it’s personal).
When criticized, we often make it personal in two ways. ____17____ Additionally, we interpret criticism as a reflection of our inborn abilities rather than our actions. This tendency, observed even in young children, can lead to reduced self-esteem, mood, and persistence. To settle it, adopting a mindset that separates the feedback from the person giving it can help maintain objectivity and resilience (适应力) in the face of criticism.
____18____
Once you depersonalize criticism in this way, you can start to see it for what it is: a rare glimpse into what outsiders think about your performance, and thus a potential opportunity to correct course and improve. Studies indicate that actively engaging with feedback improves academic outcomes. If this doesn’t come easily to you, consider forming a critics’ circle with trusted peers to exchange honest feedback and enhance resilience.
Make criticism a gift, never a weapon.
We all have to give criticism from time to time. ____19____ Research suggests five key elements for providing constructive feedback: the care of the receiver in mind; respectful delivery; good intentions; a pathway to improvement; and appropriate targeting of the receiver’s needs.
Praise in public, criticize in private.
____20____ He used it to motivate players. Research confirms its effectiveness: public praise boosts motivation by 9%, while private criticism increases motivation by 11% compared to public settings.
A. The key to criticizing is to remember it is intended to help, not harm.
B. Therefore, we should approach criticism positively.
C. View criticism as objective feedback.
D. Treat criticism like secret information.
E. We shifts the focus from emotion to analysis.
F. This rule is credited to the football coach Vince Lombardi.
G. We may naturally analyze the critic rather than the criticism.

It was the day of the big cross-country run. Students from seven different primary schools in and around the small town were warming up and walking the route(路线)through thick evergreen forest.
I looked around and finally spotted David, who was standing by himself off to the side by a fence. He was small for ten years old. His usual big toothy smile was absent today. I walked over and asked him why he wasn’t with the other children. He hesitated and then said he had decided not to run.
What was wrong? He had worked so hard for this event!
I quickly searched the crowd for the school’s coach and asked him what had happened. “I was afraid that kids from other schools would laugh at him,” he explained uncomfortably. “I gave him the choice to run or not, and let him decide.”
I bit back my frustration(懊恼). I knew the coach meant well—he thought he was doing the right thing. After making sure that David could run if he wanted, I turned to find him coming towards me, his small body rocking from side to side as he swung his feet forward.
David had a brain disease which prevented him from walking or running like other children, but at school his classmates thought of him as a regular kid. He always participated to the best of his ability in whatever they were doing. That was why none of the children thought it unusual that David had decided to join the cross-country team. It just took him longer—that’s all. David had not missed a single practice, and although he always finished his run long after the other children, he did always finish. As a special education teacher at the school, I was familiar with the challenges David faced and was proud of his strong determination.

C 5. D 6. C 7. C

根据文章第四段“Discouraged, I suddenly stopped and lay my bike in the open in the hope it would be seen from the air, and backed to the base of a tree.(沮丧之下,我突然停下,把自行车放在开阔处,希望空中能有人看见它,然后退到一棵树底下。)”
根据文章第二段“After moving slowly along the sandy trail for about two hours, I was delighted to see cycle tracks that looked recent. Encouraged, I cycled on, keeping a sharp eye on the tracks. However, I soon realised that they were my own! (我沿着沙质小路缓慢骑行了大约两小时,欣喜地看到看起来很新的自行车轮印。受到鼓舞,我继续骑行,紧盯着这些痕迹。然而,我很快意识到这是我自己的车轮印!)”以及第三段“I was covering the same ground.(我一直在原地打转。)”
根据文章第一段“Wearily, I got up, remounted my bike and started to double back in the hope of finding definite trail markers, but this only added to the problem: the surrounding trees seemed to close in on me as I desperately looked around for landmarks — and the loud noise of the cicadas (蝉) was deafening.(我疲惫地站起身,重新骑上自行车,开始折返,希望能找到明确的路线标记,但这反而让情况变得更糟:当我拼命环顾四周寻找地标时,周围的树木似乎向我围拢过来——而蝉的刺耳鸣叫声震耳欲聋。)”以及第四段“I had no more water, and my tongue felt swollen. I felt sleepy as groups of flies settled on me in a vain attempt to find dampness.(我已经没有水了,舌头肿胀。成群苍蝇落在我身上,徒劳地想要找到湿气,我感到昏昏欲睡)”可知,而蝉的刺耳鸣叫声震耳欲聋,作者没有水,舌头肿胀,成群苍蝇落在作者身上寻找湿气,可推理出作者的身体不适感不断加剧。
【7题详解】
词句猜测题。根据倒数第二段“There before me was Logue Brook Dam, with boats pulling water skiers and people relaxing under gazebos (凉亭).(洛格布鲁克大坝就在我的眼前,水面上有船只拖着滑水者,还有人们在凉亭下休闲放松。)”
D 9. C 10. B 11. D

根据文章第四段“Evidence suggests that humour actually bolster feelings of confidence, competence and status, making funny people very influential.(有证据表明幽默实际上会bolster自信、能力与地位感,让风趣的人很有影响力)”可知,划线词后文提到了自信、能力与地位感,让风趣的人很有影响力,可推理出划线词bolster表示“增强、提升”含义,和Increase含义一致。
根据文章最后一段“Several studies have demonstrated that lessons that are delivered with humour are more enjoyable for students, and also enhance students comprehension and recall of the topic.(多项研究表明,带有幽默感的课堂对学生而言更加有趣,还能提升学生对知识点的理解与记忆。)”
A 13. B 14. C 15. C

B 17. G 18. C 19. A 20. F
根据前文“The experience of modern life is a constant stream of reviews where criticism is common, which makes us struggle both to give and receive it gracefully.(现代生活的体验就是源源不断的评价,其中批评很常见,这让我们既难以优雅地给出批评,也难以优雅地接受批评。)”以及后文“It’s not personal (even when it’s personal).(这并非针对个人,即使有时看起来像针对个人。)”
根据前文“When criticized, we often make it personal in two ways.(受到批评时,我们常常会以两种方式把批评个人化。)”以及后文“Additionally, we interpret criticism as a reflection of our inborn abilities rather than our actions.(此外,我们会把批评解读为对自身先天能力的反映,而非对自身行为的评价。)”
根据前文“To settle it, adopting a mindset that separates the feedback from the person giving it can help maintain objectivity and resilience in the face of criticism.(为了解决这个问题,采取一种把反馈与给出反馈的人分开的心态,有助于在面对批评时保持客观和适应力。)”以及后文“Once you depersonalize criticism in this way, you can start to see it for what it is...(一旦你这样把批评去个人化,你就能开始看清它的本质)”可知,前文提出要把反馈与批评者本人分离开、保持客观的心态,后文承接“去个人化”这一做法继续说明其意义,可推理出应把批评视为客观反馈,C选项“View criticism as objective feedback.(把批评看作客观的反馈。)”
根据前文“We all have to give criticism from time to time.(我们都难免要时不时地给出批评。)”以及后文“Research suggests five key elements for providing constructive feedback: the care of the receiver in mind; respectful delivery; good intentions; a pathway to improvement; and appropriate targeting of the receiver’s needs.(研究表明,提供建设性反馈有五个关键要素:心系接收者的感受;尊重的表达方式;良好的意图;改进的途径;以及精准针对接收者的需求。)”可知,前文指出人们会难免给出批评,后文具体列举建设性批评的五个要素,A选项“The key to criticizing is to remember it is intended to help, not harm.(批评的关键在于记住它的目的是帮助而非伤害。)”
根据前文“Praise in public, criticize in private.(公开表扬,私下批评。)”以及后文“He used it to motivate players.(他用这一原则来激励球员。)”可知,前文提出“公开表扬、私下批评”这一原则,后文用He指代某位曾践行该原则的人物,F选项“This rule is credited to the football coach Vince Lombardi.(这一原则归功于橄榄球教练文斯·隆巴迪。)”

注意:
1. 续写词数应为150左右;
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners.
______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
We sat down next to each other, but David wouldn’t look at me. I said gently and quietly, “No one can change your mind, except yourself. If you desire to challenge yourself, there is nothing to do with others’ thoughts.” He sat still with a deep breath. “You have a full preparation before this event, which is the most important reason why you show up here”, I added with a sincere tone. Hearing my words, David turned to me tremblingly with tears spilling out of his eyes and expressed he had made a firm determination to finish the cross-country run. His coach heard what David said and gave me a look—the kind that was more determined than anyone else’s.
I watched as David moved up to the starting line with the other runners. The race started. It seemed that the runway was extremely long for young children, not to mention a child with a brain disease. David insisted on running as if he had forgotten all his weaknesses, though he was tripped over within the a few kilometers. It didn’t take long before he picked himself up again and continued his mission. Classmates all appeared on the racing track, cheering for him. “Come on! You can make it! We are proud of you!” they shouted enthusiastically. To everyone’s joy, he reached the final line and ranked the 20th. It was no more important whether he won the first place or not. It was his brave heart and strong faith that could make something unusual happen finally.
