Unit 3 Same or different
Section B (1a-1d)
I. Teaching Objectives
By the end of this lesson, students will be able to:
1.Read and use the key words and phrases in this part: mirror, hang out, outgoing, shy, straightforward, honest, a sense of humour, be similar to, be different from, share ... with ..., thanks to ...
2.Understand the two forum posts and get Matt's and Diana's opinions about friends: Matt thinks a good friend is like a mirror, and Diana thinks friends who are different make us better.
3.Finish Task 1c (matching people with descriptions) and Task 1d (answering questions) after reading.
4.Use comparatives correctly to talk about the similarities and differences between themselves and their friends, such as "He plays badminton better than I do." "I read more history books than he does."
5.Learn to respect each other's differences and understand what really matters in a friendship.
II. Key and Difficult Points
The posts in this part are about friendship, and students need to both understand them and talk about the topic themselves, so the lesson focuses on the following points.
Key points
1.Master the new words and expressions in the posts.
2.Get the main ideas and some detailed information from the two forum posts, and finish Tasks 1b, 1c and 1d.
Difficult points
1.Use comparatives to describe similarities and differences between friends correctly.
2.Express their own opinions about "Should friends be similar or different?" and give simple reasons, as in Task 1e.
III. Teaching Aids
A multimedia computer, PPT slides, a tape recording of the posts, the textbook, and the blackboard.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 minutes)
1.Greet the class as usual.
2.Ask two students to stand together and let the class compare them: "Who is taller? Who is more outgoing?" Write "similar" and "different" on the blackboard.
3.Ask the questions in Task 1a: "Are you similar to or different from your friends? In what ways?" Students talk about it with their partners for two minutes, then some pairs share their ideas.
Step 2 Pre-reading (6 minutes)
1.Show the pictures of the forum on PPT and present the new words with pictures and examples: mirror, hang out, outgoing, shy, honest, straightforward, a sense of humour.
2.Read the post by Tom together: "Should friends be similar or different?" Tell students that Matt and Diana give different answers in the forum.
3.Ask students to guess: What may Matt think? What may Diana think?
Step 3 While-reading (17 minutes)
1.Fast reading (Task 1b): Students read the two posts quickly and underline the sentences that show Matt's and Diana's opinions. Check the answers:
Matt: A good friend is like a mirror. You can understand people by knowing their friends.
Diana: Friends who are different make me better. We should respect each other's differences and learn from each other.
1.Careful reading (Task 1c): Students read the posts again and match the people with the descriptions.
Answers: 1—B 2—A 3—D 4—E 5—C
2.Detailed reading (Task 1d): Students read the posts for the third time and answer the six questions in Task 1d. First alone, then check in pairs. The teacher asks some students to answer and helps them with the difficult sentences, such as "Because of that, I try harder when I practise." "Thanks to her, I am becoming more outgoing."
3.Students read the posts aloud together to get a better feel of the language.
Step 4 Post-reading (10 minutes)
1.Explain a few useful expressions on the blackboard: play better than I do, share ... with each other, be glad to do sth., make me better.
2.Group work (Task 1e): Students discuss the questions in groups of four:
What can similarities bring to a friendship?
What can differences bring to a friendship?
What really matters in a friendship?
3.Each group chooses a reporter to give a short report. The teacher gives help with comparatives when needed and encourages students to give their own reasons.
Step 5 Summary and Homework (7 minutes)
1.Summary: Go over the two opinions and the key words with the whole class. Tell students that friends, whether similar or different, can help us become better, so we should respect and learn from each other.
2.Homework:
Copy and remember the new words and expressions.
Write five or six sentences about "My friend and I", using at least three comparatives.
V. Blackboard Design
Unit 3 Section B (1a–1d) How do we understand differences?
Should friends be similar or different?
Matt: A good friend is like a mirror.
similar: hobbies, reading different: badminton, books
Diana: Friends who are different make me better.
respect differences, learn from each other
Words: mirror, outgoing, shy, honest, straightforward, a sense of humour
Sentences: He plays badminton better than I do.
I read more history books than he does.
Thanks to her, I am becoming more outgoing.
VI. Teaching Reflection (教学反思)
