Anna Mary Robertson was a famous American painter. It is often said that Anna first took up painting when she was nearly 80 years old. In fact, when she was a little girl, she drew whenever she had a chance.
Long before she became known, Anna lived a life full of challenges. She always kept busy with farm chores, housework, and children, but she never really stopped pursuing (追求) art.
In Anna’s late age, she pictured some scenes in her mind before painting. She would close her eyes and recall a happy time from her early life. She would remember helping her father on the farm. She would see the people, the farm buildings, and the animals. She would imagine the blue mountains and the softly falling snow.
Anna’s friends and family members loved the paintings. She gave them away as gifts. A friend hung several of the paintings in a local store. One day a stranger came into the store and bought every one of her paintings. He took her paintings to New York City and showed them to some art collectors. One of these collectors, Dr. Kallir, liked the paintings. He hung some of them in his gallery (画廊). The newspaper did a story about the art show. The reporter called Anna “Grandma Moses.” From then on almost everyone called her that way. Grandma Moses kept on painting. Her paintings got better, and they got more popular.
In her lifetime, Moses created about 1,500 works of art. They were cheerful, warm and full of life, just like Grandma herself. Her paintings still remain popular today.
“As I look back on my life, it’s like a good day’s work. It was done and I feel satisfied with it. I knew nothing better than painting and made full use of what life offered. And life is what we make it, always has been, always will be,” she said.

If you’re reading this in bed on your phone, you’re not alone. Many people use their phones before and after bedtime, especially young adults and teens. Still, you might want to stop soon. Using screens before bed or in bed is believed to disrupt sleep, although the exact reasons are not completely clear.
In a new study, researchers looked into this issue by using data from a large survey of 45, 202 university students in Norway. They found that using screens in bed is linked to a 59 percent higher chance of insomnia (失眠) and can result in 24 minutes less sleep each night.
“Sleep problems are very common among students and have serious effects on mental health, school performance, and overall well-being,” says Gunnhild Johnsen Hjetland, a clinical psychologist at the Norwegian Institute of Public Health. “Because so many people use screens in bed, we wanted to see how different screen activities affect sleep. We thought social media might be worse for sleep because it is interactive (互动的) and can motivate (激发) emotions.”
However, the study found that using social media is no worse for sleep than other screen activities. The type of screen activity doesn’t matter as much as the total time spent using screens in bed. The researchers found no significant differences between social media and other screen activities. This suggests that using screens in general is the main cause of sleep problems, likely because it takes up time that could be used for resting.
“If you have trouble sleeping and think screen time might be a cause, try to reduce the use of screen in bed, and stop using screens at least 30 to 60 minutes before sleep,” says Hjetland. “If you use screens, consider turning off notifications (通知) to reduce disruptions during the night.”
8. How does the author begin the argument?
A. By listing different opinions.
B. By referring to scientific data.
C. By mentioning a common act.
D. By analyzing cause and effect.
9. Why did researchers initially guess social media could affect sleep more?
A. It included emotional inspiration.
B. It contained violent content.
C. It was entirely used by students.
D. It required frequent physical interaction.
10. Which is the practical advice Hjetland provides?
A. Reading e-books instead of social media.
B. Avoiding using screen for a while before bed.
C. Increasing daytime physical activity.
D. Stopping using screens after supper.
11. What can be the best title for the text?
A. Screen Time in Bed May Increase Sleeplessness
B. Good Sleep Is Key to Students’ Performance
C. Social Media Has the Worst Effect on Mental Health
D. Reading on Phones Is Common Among Teens and Young Adults
D
Scientists believe nature is good for our well-being (幸福). But what’s the secret that brings about the benefit? A recent study by researcher Craig Anderson and his colleagues suggests it could be awe (敬畏) — a sense of being in the presence of something greater than ourselves that fills us with wonder.
The first part of the study had some people go on a four-day river rafting (漂流) trip. They rowed through dangerous rapids in the forested areas in California. They also camped out in the wild. Before and after the trip, they reported on their well-being, including their stress levels and satisfaction with life. During the trip, they kept diaries about their emotions, including whether they’d felt awe, peace, gratitude, joy, or pride that day. At the end of the trip, their well-being had increased greatly. Studying the diaries, the researchers discovered awe — above other positive emotions — seemed to explain the improvement.
In the second part, Anderson studied whether awe played a role in more ordinary, everyday experiences in nature. The answer is also yes. This is good news, because sometimes it’s not that easy for people to have long wilderness trips. “You don’t have to do amazing things in nature to feel awe,” says Anderson. “By taking a few minutes to enjoy flowers or a sunset in nature, you also improve your well-being.”
Anderson says that awe may benefit you by creating a “small self” — a sense that you will have when you’re in the presence of something bigger than yourself, which may make worries and stresses less significant by comparison.
But he also says that there could be other ways that nature improves our well-being. For example, the related physical exercise in nature could have made a difference too. Anyway, Anderson believes there’s enough evidence to encourage people to add more experiences in nature to their daily life. “People need to slow down and make space for that in their lives,” Anderson says.
12. What does the study by Anderson and his colleagues mainly find?
A. What impacts a trip has on people. B. What makes being in nature beneficial.
C. What interests travelers in nature. D. What good feelings people have in nature.
13. How does awe take effect according to the text?
A. By stressing the greatness of nature.
B. By getting people to forget their worries.
C. By making people’s problems seem less serious.
D. By encouraging people to solve problems actively.
14. What does Anderson appeal to people to do in the last paragraph?
A. Get in touch with nature. B. Show respect for nature.
C. Make time to do exercise. D. Do more research on nature.
15. What’s the text most probably from?
A. A newspaper. B. A tour guide. C. A diary. D. A science magazine.

One of the primary goals of cognitive behavioral therapy (疗法) is finding effective ways to channel your anxiety into productive action. The best possible one is under the care of an experienced mental health care provider. Still, if you are hoping to stop being paralyzed (麻痹) by anxiety and use this energy to fuel and improve your life, you can. ____16____
Set a goal. Goal-setting is one way to use your anxiety as fuel. Take notice of your anxious thoughts and worries. What are you most concerned about? ____17____ Instead of shaking in your boots, get down to developing a plan that allows you to overcome these fears.
Challenge yourself regularly to build resilience. Think of your resilience to anxiety as a muscle. ____18____ Rather than avoiding those situations that cause anxiety, gradually expose yourself to them more often. When you do this, you will find that, over time, they lose their power. For instance, if you hate public speaking, you might benefit from signing up for a local Toastmasters club. Doing so will allow you to practice speaking in front of a group more often, which will reduce your anxiety.
____19____ Anxiety can feel like a live wire in your body. You can’t sit still or focus. Exercise is a great activity to make use of this spare energy. Exercise offers a host of benefits like fighting off illness and helping you manage weight. One of the benefits most helpful to you, however, is its ability to neutralize anxiety and improve your mood.
Perform reality testing. You don’t have to become a slave to your anxious thoughts, giving them permission to get you all worked up. ____20____ Reality testing involves assessing a situation for errors in thinking. To assess the reality of this situation, you want to ask what evidence is there that says this is true. Did your friends actually call you lame? Are they avoiding you?
A. What are your biggest fears?
B. Put them to the test instead.
C. Burn off nervous energy with physical activity.
D. How can you deal with getting fired if it does happen?

Boys like to be considered brave, but what kind of things can be considered brave? It is not a question that can be answered by words, but by actual actions. A boy named Henry gave us a good example.
Ronny and Henry were two friends in the same class. They always played together and went home together. One day as Ronny and Henry were going home after school, they saw some people fighting at the street corner. Ronny said excitedly, “Some people are fighting! Let’s go and have a look.” But Henry refused, “It’s none of our business. We’d better go home and not get close to them. Also our parents are expecting to have dinner with us together at home and I don’t want them to worry about me.”
“You are a coward (懦夫) and afraid to go,” said Ronny, and he ran to the spot with some other boys. Henry had to go home alone and didn’t think about it anymore. But Ronny thought Henry was a coward and told all the boys that. They laughed at him a lot. From then on, they looked down upon (看不起) Henry, refusing to play with him.
Henry was sad but he didn’t get angry, because he learned that true courage lies in bearing (承受) unfair misunderstanding, and that he should fear nothing but doing wrong. Thus, he just ignored the other boys’ laughter and continued to go to school and study as usual. However, Ronny didn’t invite Henry to go home with him anymore. Every day after school, he and his new friends didn’t go home directly but went to play near the river, never thinking about the possible danger.

In fact, when she was a little girl, she drew whenever she had a chance.(安娜·玛丽·罗伯逊是一位著名的美国画家。 故选A。
根据第三段“She would remember helping her father on the farm. She would see the people, the farm buildings, and the animals. She would imagine the blue mountains and the softly falling snow.(她会记得在农场帮父亲干活。她会看到人们、农场的房子和动物。她想象着蓝色的山脉和轻柔的雪花)”可知,这些都是乡村生活的元素,由此可知,Anna画作的主要主题是乡村生活。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Anna’s friends and family members loved the paintings. The reporter called Anna ‘Grandma Moses.’ From then on almost everyone called her that way.

C 9. A 10. B 11. A

根据第三段Gunnhild Johnsen Hjetland的观点“We thought social media might be worse for sleep because it is interactive and can motivate emotions. (我们认为社交媒体可能对睡眠更不利,因为它是互动的,可能激发情绪。)”可知,研究人员最初猜测社交媒体影响更大是因为其包含情感激发(emotional inspiration)。故选A项。
根据最后一段Hjetland的建议“try to reduce the use of screen in bed, and stop using screens at least 30 to 60 minutes before sleep (减少床上使用屏幕的时间,睡前至少30-60分钟停止使用)”可知,实用建议是睡前一段时间避免使用屏幕。
全文围绕“床上使用屏幕”与“睡眠问题”的关联展开,重点说明屏幕使用时间(而非活动类型)是导致失眠的主因,尤其是第一段的“Using screens before bed or in bed is believed to disrupt sleep (睡前或在床上使用屏幕被认为会扰乱睡眠)”以及第二段的“They found that using screens in bed is linked to a 59 percent higher chance of insomnia (失眠) and can result in 24 minutes less sleep each night. (他们发现,在床上使用屏幕会使失眠的几率增加59%,并且会导致每晚睡眠时间减少24分钟。)”可知,A项“床上使用屏幕可能增加失眠”最贴合主题,适合作标题。故选A项。

B 13. C 14. A 15. D

Paragraph 2:
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
A few days later, something terrible happened to Ronny. As usual, after school, he and his new friends went to play near the river, never thinking about the possible danger. While chasing each other on the bank, Ronny slipped and fell into the deep water. He couldn’t swim and struggled desperately, crying for help at the top of his voice. His friends were frozen with fear, none of them daring to jump in, for the river was deep and the current was strong. “Help! Help!” Ronny shouted in terror, his head going under the water again and again.
At that moment, Henry happened to pass by. Hearing the desperate cries, he ran over and threw himself into the river without any hesitation. He swam to Ronny, grabbed his arm tightly and pulled him toward the bank with great effort. Finally, he brought Ronny safely to the shore. Trembling with shame, Ronny apologized, “I was wrong. You are not a coward but the bravest boy I have ever known.” Henry just smiled and helped him up. From then on, Henry’s true courage won everyone’s respect, and the two became good friends again.
