Beneath the bright lights of campus stages, Zhang Xueling, an Indonesian student at South China University of Technology, has truly turned into an excellent storyteller of Chinese culture.
Born in Indonesia to a family with Fujian roots, she received a poetic Chinese name. At five, her mother signed her up for Chinese dance and Kong fu. Back then, she failed to focus on the beauty behind them. To her young mind, it felt like a heavy pressure rather than a joy — simply a tiring and boring task. She almost gave up. However, her respect for her family's wish pushed her forward.
Then, on a trip to ancient Luoyang, an unforgettable moment arrived. She was shocked to see crowds of young people walking through the streets in attractive Hanfu. The atmosphere was so powerful that it awakened her curiosity about Chinese culture. In that flash, she understood: tradition is not dead — it remains alive and breathing.
“How amazing it would be to wear Hanfu!”
Dressed in Tang-style Hanfu with full classical makeup, she walked through Yingtian Gate and felt as if she had stepped back a thousand years. It was magical: Chinese culture was not simply for museums, but for living.
She entered the 5th “Stories of China Retold in English” competition, naming her speech “Hanfu, a Walking History Book.” She didn’t just speak; she also taught herself the “Old Tales of Luoyang” dance. Backstage, her heart beat fast. “What if I make a mistake on stage?” But the moment she began to move, all her worry disappeared. Her graceful moves, paired with the beautiful Hanfu, completely won the crowd and the judges.
With the Grand Prize and the title “Star of the Stage”, Zhang Xueling proved that with true passion, anyone can bridge cultures and shine.
24. What can we learn about Zhang Xueling in her childhood?
A. She learned Kong fu for fun. B. She was interested in poems.
C. She met Chinese culture early. D. She had a gift for Chinese dance.
25. What awakened Zhang Xueling's curiosity in Luoyang?
A. The magical works of museums. B. The atmosphere of Hanfu lovers.
C. The long history of Yingtian Gate. D. The classical makeup of local girls.
26. What made Zhang Xueling win the competition?
A. Her family's support and wish. B. Her experience of wearing Hanfu.
C. Her nice speech and graceful dance. D. Her deep love for ancient Luoyang.
27. What can be concluded from Zhang Xueling's story?
A. A positive mind leads to success.
B. Traditional culture should be updated.
C. True passion connects different cultures.
D. Mistakes can be reduced through practice.

If you want to learn a language and become fluent in it, you really need to start as early in life as possible, because the older you get, the harder it can be to get your tongue round new words and sounds. However, that is not a reason to put off learning a language later in life, because there are still many advantages to it.
As you get older, it can become more and more tempting to stick to things you are most familiar with. However, giving yourself something new to do can help to keep your brain active, and the more active your brain is, the younger you will feel.
We all need new challenges every now and again. It makes life interesting. Don’t set your expectations too high-you aren’t going to become fluent in a couple of months, for example. Instead, set yourself short-term goals-to finish a text-book or to practice your skills on a language speaker. The challenge will provide you with a renewed energy for life.
Many people, especially when they are older, put off going overseas because they are worried about communicating with the local people. However, once you start to learn a language, you will have much more confidence to travel in countries where the language is spoken. Once you are able to buy things, ask directions and have free conversations, you will find traveling much more enjoyable.
One of the best reasons for learning a language later in life is simply because you can. When younger, you probably had little spare time. Now, you probably have more time in hand because your family has grown up and you may even have retired. There are so many tools you can use to learn languages these days (the television and Internet are two obvious ones), so you may not even have to pay.
28. It is commonly believed that when a person is old, _________.
A. he will stop learning B. he is slow in thought
C. he can hardly learn anything new D. he has got no time to do anything
29. The author suggests that an old person _________.
A. do the things he is familiar with B. set a high goal for later life
C. take up something new D. save his brain for future
30. The reason that old men can learn a foreign language is that _________.
A. they are planning to travel abroad alone B. they have more time than the young
C. they have been left behind by families D. they have a better memory
31. Which would be the best title for the passage?
A. Learn a Language Later in Life B. Gain Advantages in Later Life
C. Build up Confidence When Old D. Older People to Meet Challenges
D
Do you understand the power of words? Words can be terribly effective weapons (武器) when used with anger.
I have a friend who was verbally abused (辱骂) while growing up. Today — at 47 — he still suffers from the wounds caused by the words used on him by his mother. “You’re no good,” she told him. “You’ll never amount to anything.” He has lost self-respect and lacked self-confidence, because his mother’s words continue to weigh him down.
A parent should never do this to a child, and nor should one do this to others. Our job in this world is to lift up our children, our families and our friends. Words can do this as well. Sincere praise from someone you respect can send your spirit flying, just as a weaponized word can shoot your spirit out of the sky.
And it’s not just others’ words that lift you up or shoot you down. It is also your own words, or your self-talks, that can sabotage you. But if you treat them correctly, you can protect yourself from harm. After all, words are not just words, and they will affect your mood (心情).
You can imagine the effects that constant negative self-talks can have on you over a period of time. So, try to refuse negative self-talks. Do say positive statements to yourself. You can write them down, and each morning and evening for a month, read what you write aloud. You’ll reprogram your brain and turn your negative self-talk into a positive one. Do the practice often and you’ll benefit from it sooner or later.
32. Why does the author use the example of his friend?
A. To show his pity for his friend.
B. To prove words can be hurtful.
C. To present us an incorrect education.
D. To show not every parent loves their kids.
33. In Paragraph 3, what does the author think we should do?
A. Encourage our beloved ones. B. Speak highly of our families.
C. Get along well with our friends. D. Seldom mention our families’ faults.
34. What does the underlined word “sabotage” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Excite. B. Improve. C. Damage. D. Determine.
35. What’s the main idea of the last paragraph?
A. How to always keep a clear mind.
B. How to remove negative self-talks.
C. The benefits of positive self-talks.
D. The importance of lifting one’s mood.

C. they have been left behind by families D. they have a better memory
