On April 19, 2026, something unusual happened in Beijing. About 12,000 human runners and over 100 humanoid robot teams started together at the Beijing E-Town Half Marathon. It was the world’s first half marathon where humans and robots ran on the same road.
The star of the day was “Lightning”, a robot developed by Chinese company Honor. It was tall and thin with a round head and two long legs. Lightning finished the race in 50 minutes and 26 seconds. That was nearly seven minutes faster than the human world record of 57 minutes and 20 seconds. From the start, it took the lead and never gave it up.
However, Lightning hit a barrier and fell near the end. After quick adjustments by the team, it restarted and crossed the finish line successfully. The crowd cheered loudly for its strong spirit.
The progress from last year was amazing. In 2025, the winning robot took about 2 hours and 40 minutes, and only 6 of 20 teams finished. This year, nearly 40 percent of over 100 teams raced on their own, using sensors and cameras to find their way. Teams from France, Germany and Brazil also joined for the first time.
The race was not just about winning. Experts say the technology used in Lightning will change many industries. Running long distances, climbing slopes and making sharp turns help solve key problems: battery life, heat control and balance. These are the same problems robots face when working in factories, hospitals or homes. So next time you see a robot, it may be training for something much bigger than a race.
36.What can we learn about the 2026 Beijing E-Town Half Marathon?

A.About 50 minutes. B.About 1 hour. C.About 2.5 hours. D.About 5 hours.
40.Why is the race important according to the last paragraph?
A.It helps robots practice skills for real jobs.
B.It proves robots can run faster than cars.
C.It teaches humans how to run long distances.

The Mayan number system appeared in the fourth century, which was about 1,000 years earlier than the European number system. It is different from the Arabic number system with a base 10. The Mayan system had a base 20. This system is believed to have been used because the Mayans lived in such a warm area and there was hardly a need to wear shoes. 20 was the total number of fingers and toes, so the system was workable. Besides 20, the other important number is 5, which had a connection with the number of fingers and toes on one hand or foot. The Mayan system used two symbols: a dot (.) meant the units (one to four) and a dash (—) meant five. The Mayans were also the first to create symbols of zero. The most common symbol was a shell. It was the Mayan Indians who first came up with the symbol zero, although there were great experts in ancient Greece and Rome.
From further study, people found that the 360-day calendar also came from the Mayans. They used base 18 when making the calendar. Each month had 20 days with 18 months in a year. This left five days at the end of the year, which was a month full of danger and bad luck. In this way, the Mayans invented the 365-day calendar.
41.What does the underlined “It” in paragraph 1 refer to?
A.The European number system. B.The Mayan number system.
C.The Arabic number system. D.The Mayan symbol system.
42.Why could the Mayan system be used at that time?
A.People lived in such a warm area that they didn't need to count numbers.
B.People believed that they hardly used their fingers or toes to count numbers.
C.People thought the number of fingers and toes was enough to count numbers.
D.People found that they could use the days in a year of a calendar to count numbers.
43.Which of the following symbols means sixteen?(圆点=1,横线=5)
A. B. C. D.
44.What can we learn from the article?
A.The Mayan number system had a base 10.
B.All number systems had the same symbols.
C.There were only 360 days in the Mayan calendar.
D.The symbol of zero first appeared in the Mayan number system.
45.Where can you probably find the article?
A.A diary. B.An encyclopedia. C.A travel guide. D.A geography magazine.

Third, be careful with AI-generated content. Some new tools like Grokipedia use AI to write articles. 49 Always double-check AI-generated information with trusted sources like Encyclopaedia Britannica.
Finally, remember that encyclopaedias are starting points, not finishing points. 50 Use them to understand the basics, then look for more detailed books and articles to deepen your knowledge.

Afternoon newspapers were the first to suffer. People coming home from work increasingly turned on the TV, rather than open a newspaper. But generally, newspapers still managed to survive. 13 they couldn’t compete with TV in terms of delivering the latest news, they could provide in-depth reports that TV news could not.
But newspapers suffered 14 heavier blow in the 1990s. With the appearance of the internet, 15 information became free. Many newspaper readers realized that they could 16 read news online for free. There seemed to be little reason any longer for them 17 for a newspaper subscription.
So what does the future hold? Will newspapers die, just like cassettes and typewriters? Maybe not. Now, many newspapers 18 . Some are going digital. Some are going even 19 by taking the industry to places it has never been to. After all, people still want the news. And many agree that newspapers are an important source of in-depth news and ideas. If newspapers were to entirely disappear, there would be 20 to take their place.

A.It was held for human runners only.
B.It had more robots than human runners.
C.It allowed robots and humans to run together.
D.It was the first marathon in the world
37.What happened to Lightning during the race?

38.What does the underlined word “adjustments” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Short breaks. B.Loud calls. C.Careful checks. D.Small changes.
39.How long did the winning robot take in the 2025 race?
A.About 50 minutes. B.About 1 hour. C.About 2.5 hours. D.About 5 hours.
40.Why is the race important according to the last paragraph?
A.It helps robots practice skills for real jobs.
B.It proves robots can run faster than cars.
C.It teaches humans how to run long distances.
D.It shows robots can win every race.

But newspapers suffered 14 heavier blow in the 1990s. With the appearance of the internet, 15 information became free. Many newspaper readers realized that they could 16 read news online for free. There seemed to be little reason any longer for them 17 for a newspaper subscription.

A.Short breaks. B.Loud calls. C.Careful checks. D.Small changes.
39.How long did the winning robot take in the 2025 race?
A.About 50 minutes. B.About 1 hour. C.About 2.5 hours. D.About 5 hours.
40.Why is the race important according to the last paragraph?
A.It helps robots practice skills for real jobs.
B.It proves robots can run faster than cars.
C.It teaches humans how to run long distances.
D.It shows robots can win every race.

Online encyclopaedias are wonderful tools for learning, but you need to use them wisely. 46 Here are some tips to help you get the most out of them.
First, always check the source of the information. 47 If you find information on Wikipedia, look at the references at the bottom of the page. Reliable articles usually have many sources.
Second, compare information from different places. Don't rely on just one article. 48 This is especially important for school projects, where accuracy matters a lot.
A.Not all information online is accurate.
B.Who wrote the article and when was it last updated?
C.They can be helpful, but AI sometimes makes mistakes.
D.They give you an overview, but they cannot cover everything in depth.
E.Just because something is online does not mean it is true.
F.Read the same topic on two or three different websites.
