Do you like music? Have you ever listened to upbeat music—music that is happy or energetic—to cheer yourself up? Research has shown that music can have an effect on our mind. So, what is the science behind music?
Researchers found that if people listen to upbeat music while trying to feel happier at the same time, they report feeling better. However, if people just listen to the music but don’t actively try to feel happier, they can’t feel better. And listening to slower, more serious music doesn’t help them feel any happier either.
And there’s more. Researchers also found that listening to some classical music helps your brain focus and deal with information better. This is very useful when you’re studying. And many people report that simple and soft music can also help their brain stay focused. Why? The brain has two kinds of attention. One is conscious attention (有意注意) and the other is unconscious attention. While the conscious attention may be focused on work, the unconscious attention may have nothing to do, only looking for fun. Having music on in the background gives the unconscious attention something to focus on, which improves overall concentration (专注力).
The power of music doesn’t stop there. If you have trouble falling asleep from time to time, music can also help. Research shows that the best music for this purpose has about sixty beats per minute—almost the same as a healthy, resting heart. Classical music is often around this speed. Any music that is soft and does not have sudden loud parts may be effective. People who have serious sleep problems may need to listen to this kind of music for several nights before they see results.
1. When can upbeat music help us feel happier according to paragraph 2?
A. If we are also trying to feel happier.
B. If we listen to upbeat music every day.
C. If we mix upbeat music with serious music.
2. Why does some background music help improve concentration?
A. It brings the brain a lot of fun.
B. It gets the brain to work faster.
C. It gives unconscious attention something to do.
3. How does the writer develop ideas in Paragraph 4?
A. By telling stories. B. By using research findings. C. By making comparisons.

Now space exploration has become an important field for China these years. Our country keeps sending spaceships into space to learn more about the universe. On May 24, 2026, China sent Shenzhou-23 to space at Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center (酒泉卫星发射中心). Three astronauts (宇航员) went to the Tiangong space station with the Long March 2F rocket. The launch was a great success.
This mission (任务) has two special points. First, one astronaut will live in space for one year. It is the longest space trip for Chinese astronauts. Scientists can learn how people stay healthy for a long time in space. This is very vital for China’s moon plan in 2030. Second, Li Jiaying is on this trip. She is the first astronaut from Hong Kong. It shows China’s space program welcomes people from all parts of our country.
At the space station, they will do science experiments (实验), walk in space and check all machines well. This trip also tests new machines for future moon trips. All these jobs help us get ready for landing on the moon one day.
Shenzhou-23 makes all Chinese proud. It tells us China makes great progress in space study, and we are getting closer to visiting bright stars in the dark sky. Young students will also be encouraged to love science and follow their own space dreams in the future. We believe our country will achieve more amazing space achievements step by step.

Have you ever dreamed of flying? Recently, an amazing event took place at Zhejiang University. The JetRob team showed their new flying jetpack (喷气背包) in public. This invention caught the eyes of many curious students, who gathered to see for themselves.
As soon as the crowd gathered, a man named Jiao Bojing put on the jetpack. He spread his arms wide. With a strong push, he lifted almost two meters off the ground! Not only did he fly up, but he also zipped (快速移动) around in the sky like a “real-life Iron Man”. After a few spins, he landed smoothly, as if he had done it a thousand times.
Jiao, a flight test engineer, explained how the jetpack works. It has five engines. Two are in each hand, and one is on his back. This setup lets him control how high or how fast he flies. The whole jetpack weighs 31 kilograms, but when it’s full of fuel (燃料) , it’s 46 kilograms. With its weight, a person can fly for 3 to 5 minutes, which is just enough time to feel like a superhero!
The creation of the jetpack was not a walk in the park. It took the team three to four years to get it right. Jiao mentioned they spent two of those years testing how it flew. “This is the best system we’ve built so far,” he said with pride. He also shared that flying safely takes practice. “It’s like learning to ride a bike,” he said.
Jiao hopes that one day, his whole family can fly together in the sky. It sounds like a scene from a storybook, but he believes it could happen soon. With hard work and creativity, they might make their dream come true!

A. Jiao’s flying practice. B. A new flying jetpack C. A flight test engineer.

Long ago, in ancient China, there was a story about the invention of silk. People believed that silk was first invented by Leizu, the wife of the Yellow Emperor. Leizu learned how to make cocoons (蚕茧) into soft and strong cloth. This magical cloth became known as “silk”, and it was so valuable that it was called “China’s Gold”. Following the kings’ orders, the Chinese kept the secret of making silk for centuries.
But then, something amazing happened! During the Han Dynasty, the brave officer Zhang Qian traveled west as far as Central Asia and brought silk there. As years passed by, silk became so important that the trade road from Europe to China got its name— the Silk Road.
The Silk Road became a busy highway for traders who carried things across deserts and mountains. From China, people sold silk and tea. In return, they received treasures such as spices (香料) , gold and silver from the West. At the very beginning, it was mainly about trade; then people began to share ideas, technologies and cultures. For example, Chinese inventions like papermaking were spread to the West, while new ideas about math and science came to China.
Most importantly, the Silk Road helped different cultures learn from each other. Art, music and even language were shared along this ancient road. In places like the Dunhuang Grottoes (石窟) in China, you can see how art pieces combined (融合) Eastern and Western styles into something distinctive (独特的) . It can not be seen anywhere else.
The story of the Silk Road tells us how people from faraway lands could become friends through trade and shared ideas. Today, we remember the Silk Road as one of the greatest examples of cooperation (合作) and exchange in history. It shows us how important it is to learn about and respect each other’s traditions, and that different cultures can work together to create amazing things.
12. What was spread from China to the West according to paragraph 3?
A. Silk and gold. B. Tea and papermaking. C. Spices and silver.
13. What is the right order of the following facts from the passage?
①Zhang Qian traveled west with silk.
②Art and language were shared along the Silk Road.
③Traders from China and the West exchanged things.
④The Chinese were ordered to keep the secret of making silk.
A. ①→④→③→② B. ④→③→②→① C. ④→①→③→②
14. The underlined word “It” in paragraph 4 refers to ________.
A. The combined art style B. The silk C. Eastern-style
15. What does the story of the Silk Road mainly tell us?
A. The change of world trade.

Hello, I’m David Smith. Now I’d like to share with you the story of how music has had a strong influence on my life.
Have you ever faced a time when things looked dark and you had no hope at all? Two years ago, my body ached all the time. So I went to the doctor. I was told I had a serious illness which was difficult to cure (治愈) . And I thought I didn’t have much longer to live. I was very afraid and I felt so lonely and discouraged.
Then one day, I had to go through a two-hour medical treatment. The doctor wanted me to relax, so she played some music for me, and one of the songs was Happy, which has been my favorite song till now. This positive and uplifting song gave me strength (力量) and helped me go through the darkness. From then on, I began to listen to music all the time. John A. Logan once said, “Music is the medicine of the mind.” And it’s true. Music worked wonders for me. It helped me recover and come back to life.
Of course, I hope none of you have to experience the same kind of suffering (痛苦) that I did. However, we all go through some periods when we feel sad or lonely. During those times, music can help you in the same way that it helped me. I hope all of you will value music and make it a part of your life.
