但很多人漏了最关键的一处:一二段明明写了"plan was simple"和"swollen from days of heavy rain",这是原文在告诉你——这场危险本可避免。
It was a bright, unseasonably warm Saturday in late April when 32-year-old Bennett Reinhardt and his childhood friend Mary decided to go kayaking on the Elk River, a winding, fast-moving waterway that cuts through the hills of northern Alabama. The plan was simple: paddle a gentle stretch, enjoy the sunshine, and be back by mid-afternoon. Neither had any idea the day would turn into a fight for survival.
The trouble started almost immediately. The river, swollen from days of heavy rain, was running much faster than usual. Within minutes of launching, the current grabbed their kayaks and swept them downstream far quicker than they'd anticipated. Before they knew it, they'd drifted into a narrow, rocky gorge known locally as "The Narrows".
Panic set in as Bennett's kayak crashed into a rock and turned over. He hit the water hard, the cold current instantly stealing his breath. Mary, who was just ahead, managed to paddle to the bank and climb to safety, but Bennett was gone—swept downstream, bouncing off rocks, his body rolling in the icy water.
Some 200 yards downstream, Bennett finally managed to grab onto a small tree growing out of the riverbank. The tree he clung to was small, its roots barely holding in the soft soil. Each surge of current pulled at his body, threatening to tear him loose. Bennett's hands were numb, his muscles shaking from hypothermia, his mind foggy from the shock. He clung there, gasping, as the water raged past. He shouted for help, but the roaring current drowned most of his voice. His strength was fading fast, and he knew he couldn't hold on much longer. "Please," he whispered, "someone help me."
Tom Carter, a construction worker who lived a half-mile from the river, was working in his yard. He had lived there his whole life and had pulled more than one careless paddler out of trouble.
Paragraph 1: On hearing the frantic shouts, Tom grabbed a rope and headed toward the water.
Paragraph 2: Moments later, Mary arrived and saw Bennett lying on the muddy bank.
· The plan was simple——
· Neither had any idea the day would turn into a fight for survival——
核心词汇:unseasonably warm 异常温暖的|kayaking 皮划艇|winding 蜿蜒的|fast-moving 湍急的|waterway 水道|cut through 穿过|paddle 划桨|a gentle stretch 一段平缓的水域|be back by mid-afternoon 下午三点前回来|have no idea 完全不知道|a fight for survival 一场求生之战
· The trouble started almost immediately——
· swollen from days of heavy rain——因连日大雨而暴涨。
· running much faster than usual——比平时快得多。
· the current grabbed their kayaks and swept them downstream——无灵主语。
· far quicker than they'd anticipated——比他们预想的快得多。
· Before they knew it——还没等他们反应过来。
· known locally as "The Narrows"——当地人叫它"窄口"。
核心词汇:swollen 暴涨的|heavy rain 大雨|run much faster 流得快得多|within minutes of 在……几分钟内|current 水流|grab 抓住|sweep downstream 冲向下游|anticipate 预料|before one knew it 还没等某人反应过来|drift into 漂进|narrow, rocky gorge 狭窄的岩石峡谷|be known as 被称为
· Panic set in——恐慌"袭来"。
· crashed into a rock and turned over——撞上岩石、翻覆。
· He hit the water hard——
· the cold current instantly stealing his breath——独立主格。
· Mary, who was just ahead, managed to paddle to the bank and climb to safety——Mary
· but Bennett was gone——但 Bennett 不见了。
· swept downstream, bouncing off rocks, his body rolling in the icy water——三个分词短语并列,写 Bennett 被冲走的失控画面。
核心词汇:panic set in 恐慌袭来|crash into 撞上|turn over 翻覆|hit the water hard 重重落水|cold current 冰冷的水流|steal one's breath 夺走某人的呼吸|manage to do 勉强做到|paddle to the bank 划到岸边|climb to safety 爬上岸|be gone 不见了|bounce off rocks 撞上岩石弹开|roll in the icy water 在冰水中翻滚
· Some 200 yards downstream——
· finally managed to grab onto a small tree——终于抓住一棵小树。
· The tree he clung to was small——他抓住的那棵树很小。
· its roots barely holding in the soft soil——独立主格。
· Each surge of current pulled at his body——
· threatening to tear him loose——分词作伴随状语,威胁要把他冲走。
· Bennett's hands were numb, his muscles shaking from hypothermia, his mind foggy from the shock——
· He clung there, gasping, as the water raged past——
· He shouted for help, but the roaring current drowned most of his voice——
· His strength was fading fast——
· he knew he couldn't hold on much longer——他知道自己撑不了多久了。
· "Please," he whispered, "someone help me."——直接引语,低声说"求求你,谁来救救我"。
核心词汇:downstream 下游|manage to do 设法做到|grab onto 抓住|grow out of 从……长出来|cling to 紧抓不放|root 根|barely 勉强|soft soil 松软的泥土|surge 涌动|pull at 拉扯|threaten to do 威胁要做|tear sb. loose 把某人冲走|numb 麻木的|hypothermia 失温|foggy 模糊的|gasp 喘气|rage past 咆哮而过|shout for help 喊救命|roaring 咆哮的|drown 淹没|fade fast 快速消失|hold on 坚持|whisper 低语
Tom Carter, a construction worker who lived a half-mile from the river, was working in his yard. He had lived there his whole life and had pulled more than one careless paddler out of trouble.
· Tom Carter, a construction worker——
· who lived a half-mile from the river——住在离河半英里处。
· was working in his yard——正在院子里干活。
· He had lived there his whole life——一辈子住在这里。
· had pulled more than one careless paddler out of trouble——过去完成时。
核心词汇:construction worker 建筑工人|a half-mile from 离……半英里|work in one's yard 在院子里干活|one's whole life 一辈子|pull sb. out of trouble 把某人从困境中拉出来|more than one 不止一个|careless 粗心的|paddler 划桨者
He had lived there his whole life and had pulled more than one careless paddler out of trouble.
2."plan was simple"+"swollen from days of heavy rain"("本可避免"暗线,尖子生必收)
原文:The plan was simple... The river, swollen from days of heavy rain, was running much faster than usual.
Each surge of current pulled at his body... His strength was fading fast, and he knew he couldn't hold on much longer.
4."Please, someone help me"(P1 情感伏笔)
Please," he whispered, "someone help me."
Mary, who was just ahead, managed to paddle to the bank and climb to safety, but Bennett was gone.
续写用法:P2 首句 "Mary arrived and saw Bennett lying on the muddy bank" 直接回扣 Mary 上岸后寻找 Bennett 的情节。
Bennett's hands were numb, his muscles shaking from hypothermia, his mind foggy from the shock.
Paragraph 1
On hearing the frantic shouts, Tom grabbed a rope and headed toward the water.
Tom
Tom(动作主体)
grabbed a rope and headed toward the water(抓起绳子、朝河边冲去)
He knew this stretch of the river better than anyone—and he knew that a man in the water had only minutes.
同时回扣原文 "He had lived there his whole life",写出 Tom 的经验和紧迫感——这是主线主角的登场方式。
Paragraph 2
Moments later, Mary arrived and saw Bennett lying on the muddy bank.
Mary(观察者),Bennett(躺在岸上的人)
He was shaking violently, his lips blue, his hands still curled as if gripping something that was no longer there.
同时回扣原文 "his hands were numb, his muscles shaking from hypothermia",写他获救后身体还保持着抓握的本能,为后文"由 Tom 搀扶、道谢、醒悟"做铺垫。
Tom braced himself and pulled, inch by inch, until he seized Bennett's shoulders and dragged him onto the muddy shore.
Sitting by the fire, Bennett stared at the stranger who had saved his life—and at the river that had nearly taken it—vowing to pass on the kindness and never to take such danger lightly again.

Bennett was in great danger.
Each surge of water tore at his numb fingers, the small tree shaking violently beneath him.
The river was very dangerous.
The roaring current thundered past, shaking the weakly-rooted tree.
Tom was very experienced.
Judging the force of the current at a glance, Tom tied the rope to a sturdy tree and threw the other end toward Bennett.
· 例:Tom 很专业 → judged the current → tied one end to a sturdy tree → yelled "Grab it!" → pulled inch by inch。
· 例:Bennett 在坚持 → fingers clamped tight → lunged forward → caught the rope。
We should help others in danger.
· ✅ 贴合情节(立意三):The rope pulled him from the water, but it was the kindness Tom showed—and the warning the swollen river had given—that Bennett carried with him, vowing to pass on the first and never to ignore the second again.
Tom(主线)
Bennett(支线)
Mary(落点铺垫)

Paragraph 1
On hearing the frantic shouts, Tom grabbed a rope and headed toward the water. Knowing this stretch of the river well, he raced along the bank. At the bank, he saw Bennett clinging to a small tree, his face blue with cold. The current was too strong to swim against, so Tom tied one end of the rope to a sturdy tree and threw the other end toward him. "Grab it!" he yelled. Bennett lunged forward and caught it with both hands. Tom braced himself and pulled with all his might, inch by inch, until he dragged Bennett onto the muddy shore.
Paragraph 2
Moments later, Mary arrived and saw Bennett lying on the muddy bank. She rushed to his side and knelt beside him, her eyes filled with tears. "I thought I'd lost you," she sobbed, squeezing his hand. Bennett managed a weak smile and nodded toward Tom. "Thanks to him," he whispered. Tom wrapped his jacket around Bennett's shaking shoulders. Sitting by the fire later, Bennett stared at the stranger who had saved him and made a silent promise: if ever given the chance, he would do the same for someone else.
Paragraph 1
On hearing the frantic shouts, Tom grabbed a rope and headed toward the water. He knew this stretch of the river better than anyone—and he knew that a man in the water had only minutes. Reaching the bank, he saw Bennett clinging to a small tree, his face blue with cold, the current too strong to swim against. Tom tied one end of the rope to a sturdy tree and hurled the other end toward Bennett. "Grab it!" he yelled over the roar. His fingers too numb to grip, Bennett lunged forward but missed the first throw. Cursing under his breath, Tom pulled the rope back and threw again. This time Bennett caught it, his trembling hands clamping tight. Tom braced himself and pulled, inch by inch, until Bennett collapsed on the muddy shore.
Paragraph 2
Moments later, Mary arrived and saw Bennett lying on the muddy bank. At the sight of her childhood friend shaking on the cold mud, Mary hurried forward and dropped to her knees. "I thought I'd lost you," she sobbed, squeezing his hand. Bennett managed a weak smile and nodded toward Tom. "Thanks to him," he whispered. Tom was already wrapping his jacket around Bennett's shaking shoulders. Then Bennett's eyes drifted to the swollen river, and he shivered—not from cold, but from a slow realization: the rain had been falling for days, a warning they had read but refused to heed. Gratitude for Tom, and a new respect for the river, settled deep in his heart.
Paragraph 1
On hearing the frantic shouts, Tom grabbed a rope and headed toward the water. Having lived beside the river all his life, he knew exactly how little time a drowning man possessed. Racing to the scene, he caught sight of Bennett clinging to that frail-rooted sapling, his face blue with cold. Years by the water had taught Tom what a stranger could not see: this current did not yield to a swimmer's arms. Judging the water's force in a glance, he tied one end of the rope to a sturdy tree and hurled the other toward Bennett. "Grab it!" he yelled. Bennett lunged forward, his numbed fingers closing around the rope by pure instinct. Tom braced himself and pulled, inch by inch, until Bennett collapsed on the muddy shore, coughing up water.
Paragraph 2
Moments later, Mary arrived and saw Bennett lying on the muddy bank. Trembling with the after-effects of hypothermia, he managed a weak smile as her tears fell onto his cheek. "I thought I'd lost you," she sobbed. Bennett squeezed her hand and nodded toward Tom. "Thanks to him," he whispered. Tom was already wrapping his jacket around Bennett's shaking shoulders. As he looked out at the swollen river, Bennett felt a chill that had nothing to do with the cold: it had been warning them for days, and they had been too busy enjoying the sunshine to listen. Gratitude for Tom and awe before the river took root in his heart. The rope had saved his body; the warning had saved him from ever making the same mistake again.
Tom
Bennett
