The morning mist still hung over the small courtyard when I arrived with my heavy camera equipment. As a commercial photographer used to tight deadlines and instant digital previews, my assignment was simple: take a few photos of Mrs. Ray at work, one of the region’s last traditional oil-paper umbrella makers, and catch the mid-day train back to the city.
Inside the yard, wide wooden frames held rows of hand-made paper umbrellas, all still wet with fresh oil. Mrs. Ray, a small woman in her seventies with hands marked dark yellow from years of work, was standing still, staring carefully at the grey horizon.
“The air is too cold now,” she said softly, without turning around. “We wait.” I checked my watch. “Can’t we just use an electric dryer?” I suggested, pointing to the modern equipment in my bag. “It would achieve the exact same effect in half the time.” Mrs. Ray smiled faintly, shaking her head. “The oil-paper umbrella needs warm natural air and sunshine to dry properly,” she explained. “Rushed hot-air drying would make the paper easily broken and ruin its rich color.”
For the next two hours, we sat in silence on the passage. As the cold air gradually warmed up, the thick clouds began to part, revealing a brilliant gold sun. Mrs. Ray immediately stepped into the yard. Following her, I raised my camera. Through the lens (镜头), I watched the pale, damp paper slowly transform under the sunlight, turning into a deep, rich color as it dried in the light wind.
I put down my camera and forgot about the train schedule. For a while, I simply watched her steady hands working under the warm sun. Then I pulled up a wooden chair and sat quietly beside her, letting the quiet scene stay in front of me a little longer.
4. What was the author’s plan when he first arrived?
A. To complete his task quickly. B. To help Mrs. Ray carry tools.
C. To take photos of morning mist. D. To learn paper umbrella making.
5. Why did Mrs. Ray refuse to use the electric dryer?
A. She thought it was too expensive. B. She preferred working in the dark.
C. She failed to operate modern equipment. D. She valued the traditional drying method.
6. Which of the following can best describe Mrs. Ray?
A. Cautious and flexible. B. Friendly and humorous.
C. Patient and dedicated. D. Creative and competitive.
7. What did the author learn from his experience?
A. Good things take time to create. B. Hard work brings a strong reward.
C. Modern tools are not always reliable. D. Traditional skills are not easy to learn.
A 5. D 6. C 7. A

C
Tree shade is one of the most effective tools cities have against extreme heat. It’s cheap, and works immediately, and it makes streets genuinely more bearable for the people who have no choice but to be on them. But a new study from the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar has found that blanket tree-planting targets — the kind that focus purely on increasing green cover — can miss the point. In some cases, city greening projects may actually make damp heat feel worse.
Trees cool cities through two mechanisms: shade and evapotranspiration (蒸散). Shade is straightforward — canopy (树冠) blocks direct sunlight and the ground and people beneath it stay cooler. Evapotranspiration is the process by which trees release moisture (水分) into the air, which in dry conditions evaporates and carries heat away with it.
The problem is that evapotranspiration’s benefits depend heavily on context. In dry air, released moisture evaporates efficiently and the cooling effect is strong. In hot, wet and closely built neighborhoods, that same moisture can accumulate near the ground rather than disappearing. The air stays heavy and warm. And the Heat Index (指数), which combines temperature and dampness to capture how heat is actually experienced by the human body, can go up even as the shade provides immediate surface-level relief.
The researchers found this effect showing up across their dataset. Once greenness and leaf thickness crossed certain limits, plant cover and canopy structure were associated with lower Heat Index. But high canopy physiological activity (trees working hard, releasing a lot of moisture) was associated with higher Heat Index in some settings, particularly in hot, wet and small urban areas.
Cities need more trees, but they also need the right trees in the right places. Shade, moisture management, and airflow all need to work together rather than as separate solutions. And those decisions must be tailored to the specific climate and layout of each neighborhood.
8. What is the shortcoming of blanket tree-planting targets?
A. They fail to improve street conditions for passersby.
B. They rely too much on two cooling mechanisms of trees.
C. They may worsen damp heat in certain city neighborhoods.
D. They cannot increase the city’s total green cover effectively.
9. What does the underlined word “accumulate” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. Escape. B. Reduce. C. Separate. D. Gather.
10. What can we learn from the research findings?
A. Leaf thickness is directly linked to a lower Heat Index.
B. Surface shade can guarantee the drop of local Heat Index.
C. Evapotranspiration creates similar cooling effects in cities.
D. Green cover helps reduce Heat Index after reaching certain limits.
11. What is the best title for the text?
A. How Trees Influence Different Urban Areas
B. Why More Trees May Not Always Cool Cities
C. Why Cities Should Reduce Green Cover Quickly
D. How Heat Problems Are Solved Through Technology
C 9. D 10. D 11. B
根据第一段“In some cases, city greening projects may actually make damp heat feel worse.(在某些情况下,城市绿化项目实际上可能会让湿热问题变得更严重)”可知,盲目植树的缺点是可能会加重某些街区的湿热感。
根据第三段“In hot, wet and closely built neighborhoods, that same moisture can accumulate near the ground rather than disappearing. The air stays heavy and warm.(在炎热、潮湿且建筑密集的社区中,这种湿气往往不会消散,而是accumulate在地面附近。空气变得沉重而闷热)”可知,释放的水分没有消失,而是在近地面“积聚/聚集”,导致空气沉闷。故划线词意思是“聚集”。
【10题详解】
细节理解题。根据第四段“Once greenness and leaf thickness crossed certain limits, plant cover and canopy structure were associated with lower Heat Index.(当绿化程度和叶片厚度达到一定限度时,植物覆盖和冠层结构与较低的热指数相关)”可知,绿化覆盖率达到一定限度后,能有效降低体感热指数。
根据第一段“Tree shade is one of the most effective tools cities have against extreme heat. In some cases, city greening projects may actually make damp heat feel worse.(树荫是城市抵御极端高温最有效的手段之一。
D
For centuries, intelligence was often measured by how much people could remember or how quickly they could calculate. Yet cognitive (认知的) science now offers a different view. The thing that makes the human mind exceptional is its ability to carry ideas from one field into another. Intelligence, therefore, may be less like a ladder than a network of bridges.
Researchers describe this ability as cross-domain transfer. Instead of copying knowledge directly, the brain extracts underlying patterns and applies them in unfamiliar situations. A child who learns balance while riding a bicycle may later recognize the importance of balance in teamwork or even in solving disagreements. Likewise, a scientist trained to notice tiny changes in experiments may become unusually sensitive to slight signals in everyday communication.
To understand how this works, psychologists designed experiments in which volunteers first mastered one task before unexpectedly facing another that seemed unrelated. In one study, participants learned to manage traffic flow by directing vehicles away from crowded crossroads. They were later asked to distribute limited medical resources in a hospital. Although the settings differed completely, those who had grasped the deeper structure of the first task performed significantly better in the second. What they transferred was not knowledge itself, but a way of thinking.
Brain-imaging research provides further evidence. Rather than relying on a single intelligence center, cross-domain transfer requires several brain systems to work together. When solving a new problem, the brain searches earlier experience for useful structures, tests whether they fit the new situation, and, if necessary, abandons old responses to build new ones. Only through such constant reorganization does genuine adaptability emerge.
This ability matters more than ever in the age of AI. AI systems excel within clearly defined domains. Yet real-world decisions often combine technical, social, ethical and emotional factors that cannot be separated so neatly. Not until knowledge crosses boundaries can sound judgment be formed. The future, therefore, may belong not to those who know the most, but to those who can connect ideas across different worlds.
12. What is the traditional view of human intelligence?
A. It values adaptability in new settings. B. It relies on connecting different ideas.
C. It focuses on memory and calculation. D. It depends on making quick decisions.
13. The study mentioned in paragraph 3 proves that volunteers transferred _________.
A. practical traffic skills B. underlying thinking patterns
C. detailed experimental rules D. specific medical knowledge
14. What can be inferred about cross-domain transfer from paragraph 4?
A. It is controlled by one primary brain region.
B. It prevents people from abandoning old habits.
C. It requires constant adjustment of mental models.
D. It functions independently of previous experience.
15. Why does cross-domain transfer matter in the age of AI according to the text?
A. AI may soon replace human sound judgment.
B. AI handles emotional issues better than humans.
C. Storing vast information determines future success.
D. Real-world choices require cross-boundary thinking.
C 13. B 14. C 15. D
根据第一段“For centuries, intelligence was often measured by how much people could remember or how quickly they could calculate.(几个世纪以来,智力常常被衡量为人们能记住多少或计算得有多快)”可知,传统观点认为智力取决于记忆力和计算速度。
根据第三段“What they transferred was not knowledge itself, but a way of thinking.(他们迁移的并非知识本身,而是一种思维方式)”可知,实验证明受试者迁移的是深层思维模式。
根据第四段“When solving a new problem, the brain searches earlier experience for useful structures, tests whether they fit the new situation, and, if necessary, abandons old responses to build new ones. Only through such constant reorganization does genuine adaptability emerge.(在解决新问题时,大脑会从过往经验中搜寻有用的认知框架,检验它们是否适用于新情境;必要时,摒弃旧的反应模式并构建新的模式。只有通过这种持续的重构,真正的适应能力才会形成)”可知,跨领域迁移需要不断调整和重构内在的心智模型。
【15题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“Not until knowledge crosses boundaries can sound judgment be formed. The future, therefore, may belong not to those who know the most, but to those who can connect ideas across different worlds.(只有当知识跨越边界,才能形成可靠的判断。因此,未来或许不属于掌握知识最多的人,而属于那些能够在不同领域之间串联想法的人)”可知,现实世界的复杂决策需要跨越边界的综合思维。

【导语】文章针对待办事项过多导致拖延和无动力的问题,提出了四条切实的应对策略:拆解大任务、从喜欢的任务入手、为讨厌的工作设置奖励以及先行动起来。
【16题详解】
根据上文“Have you ever noticed that when your to-do list is at its longest, your motivation is at its lowest? Facing a dozen urgent tasks often brings a sense of helplessness, leaving you confused about where to start. When everything feels equally pressing, staying inactive only builds up stress. (你有没有注意到,当待办事项最多时,你的动力反而最低?面对一连串紧急任务,常常会让人感到无助,不知从何开始。当所有事情都显得同样紧迫时,无所作为只会加剧压力。)”可知,空格前指出“待办事项堆积如山时往往最缺乏动力,保持不动只会增加压力”。G选项“所幸应用几条明智的策略能帮你重新掌握主动权。”承上启下,自然引出下文的具体策略。
【17题详解】
根据上文“Break down massive tasks. When a large project feels overwhelming, reduce your stress by taking deep breaths and breaking it into tiny, manageable steps. (分解大任务。当一个大型项目让你感到压力巨大时,通过深呼吸并将其拆解成小而可管理的步骤,可以有效减轻压力。)”可知,段落主题是“拆解大任务”。空格前提到“深呼吸,然后将其分解成微小且可管理的步骤”,F选项“把每一步拆得足够小,小到你觉得开始毫无困难。”顺承前文对步骤拆解的程度要求。
【18题详解】
本段主题为“Start with enjoyable items. (从愉悦的项目开始。)”以及后文“Instead of forcing yourself to deal with the hardest item right away, begin with the most enjoyable task. Following what feels appealing can offer a quick sense of progress and refresh your mind. When everything must get done eventually, starting with the easiest task helps you build confidence.
根据上文“Reward yourself for unpleasant work. (完成不愉悦的工作后奖励自己。)”以及后文“If you keep delaying a tough email, promise yourself ten minutes of fun online browsing right after sending it. Using an enjoyable activity to reward the completion of a difficult task is a simple and effective way to overcome procrastination (拖延). (如果你一直拖延一封棘手的邮件,可以承诺自己在发送后立即花十分钟上网浏览有趣的内容。用一项愉快的活动来奖励完成一项困难的任务,是一种简单而有效的方法,有助于克服拖延心理。)”可知,本段主题是完成不愉快的工作后要奖励自己,E项“把困难任务和小奖励搭配起来,会让它更容易完成。”对应后文发完难处理的邮件就奖励自己上网浏览的例子,呼应段落主旨。
【20题详解】
根据上文“Take action first. Action often creates motivation rather than the other way around. So do not wait until you feel completely ready. Instead, set a timer for just five minutes and start with a small task. (先采取行动。行动往往能激发动力,而不是反过来。因此,不要等到自己完全准备就绪才开始。相反,设置一个五分钟的计时器,从一项小任务开始。)”可知,本段建议先行动,设置5分钟计时器从小任务开始,A项“一旦你开始了,继续推进就会容易得多。”承接开始行动的表述,和后文完成简单任务获得信心的内容连贯。

【答案】范文:
Say No to Snacks in Classrooms
Recently, an increasing number of students have been bringing snacks into classrooms, creating several noticeable problems. For one thing, eating during breaks often leaves food wrappers on desks, which damages the classroom environment and attracts pests. For another, the noise and strong smells easily distract classmates from studying, which lowers their learning efficiency.
To address this issue, I suggest that our school set up designated eating zones outside teaching buildings. Meanwhile, student council members could conduct daily inspections to remind everyone to keep classrooms snack-free. By working together, we can maintain a clean and quiet learning environment.

Leo wiped (擦去) the sweat from his forehead and looked unhappily at the long rows of apple trees. Spending his weekend at his grandfather’s farm was far from what he considered fun. He preferred staying in the city, playing video games with his friends. Instead, here he was, carrying a heavy wooden basket under the autumn sun.
His grandfather, Arthur, walked steadily a few steps ahead. Although the old man was seventy years old, his hands were still quick and steady. He gently picked the red apples from the branches, placing them carefully into his basket. Arthur stopped for a moment, wiped his face, and looked up at the sky. A thick layer of dark clouds was covering the sun.
“We must hurry, Leo,” Arthur said with concern in his voice. “The radio said a heavy storm is coming this evening. If we don’t pick the apples on the north hill before the rain arrives, the strong wind may ruin the whole harvest.”
Leo let out a long sigh of frustration. His arms were already aching, and his clothes were covered with dirt. “Grandpa, we have worked here for five hours. Can’t we leave the rest? There are only a few trees left.”
Arthur looked at the dark clouds in the sky and then at the apple trees on the hill. “These apples are the fruit of a year’s hard work,” he said softly. “I know you are tired, but we should try our best.”
Leo said nothing. He followed his grandfather quietly. On the way up the hill, he noticed that Arthur was walking more slowly than before. The old man stopped several times to catch his breath, yet he picked up the basket again and carried on.
When they reached the top of the hill, a stronger wind swept across the field. The sky darkened, and a few drops of rain started to fall. Arthur looked at the remaining apples and hesitated. The weather was getting worse, but he still wanted to save as many apples as possible.

Seeing his grandfather’s tired face, Leo felt a sudden wave of guilt. He immediately put down his basket and rushed toward Arthur. “Grandpa, let me help you,” he said. From that moment on, Leo stopped complaining. He took the basket from his grandfather, picked up the apples on the ground, and helped him collect the remaining fruit. At one point, Arthur looked back at him and smiled. That simple smile gave Leo new strength. Despite the worsening weather, they encouraged each other and worked side by side.
By the time they carried the last baskets into the storage room, the storm had finally arrived. Outside, heavy rain beat against the door, while inside, the quiet room was filled with the sweet smell of fresh apples. Leo sat down, feeling exhausted. Arthur walked over, handed him a towel, and patted his shoulder gently. “You helped save the harvest today, Leo,” Arthur smiled. Looking at the red fruit around them, Leo took a bite of an apple. It was sweet. He smiled and handed one to his grandfather. They enjoyed the sweet apple together, and at that moment, Leo felt closer to his grandfather than ever before.
