It was Archimedes who solved the king’s problem of the golden crown while taking a bath. He was perhaps one of the most outstanding scientists in the world. He was a mathematician, physicist, engineer, weapon designer and inventor. He was born on the island of Sicily in the city of Syracuse around the year 287 BC and died in 212 BC. Archimedes showed great love for mathematics. He made many discoveries. For example, he determined the exact value of pi. He invented and developed methods similar to calculus and used them to find the area of a circle and an accurate estimation of the value of pi. Today he is regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians in history. Archimedes used his mathematical skills and talents to create useful inventions. One of his most famous inventions is called the Archimedes’ Screw. It was a device that could lift water to higher levels. One of its first uses was to pump water out from a leaking ship. It is still used today in some places to move water from low places to high places. This invention influenced Leonardo da Vinci as he worked on developing the functioning flying machine. Can you imagine counting the sand in the universe? Archimedes once tried to calculate the number of sand grains in the universe. Obviously, it was impossible but it goes to show that he was too smart. His intellectual curiosity and achievements would go on to encourage other mathematicians as well. Most of his achievements were by far ahead of his time. Archimedes was indeed a genius. 11.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2? A.A brief introduction to Archimedes. B.Archimedes’ discoveries in maths. C.The great inventions of Archimedes. D.Archimedes’ study on the universe. 12.What does the underlined word “it” refer to in Paragraph 3? A.A leaking ship. Every time we went there, he would tell me about a large fish named Walter. According to him, Walter was the smartest fish in the river. Many people tried to catch him, but he could always slip away (溜走) in the end. One morning, while I was fishing with Grandpa, my fishing rod suddenly shook. “It’s Walter!” I cried excitedly. My heart beat fast as I tried to hold the rod tight. However, just when I thought I was about to catch him, he slipped away. I felt as if I had lost something valuable. Seeing I was upset, Grandpa placed his hand on my shoulder and said, “The big ones are never easy to catch. You need patience and a little luck.” That night, I could hardly sleep. The next morning, I got up early and returned to the river alone. I remembered every word Grandpa had taught me and waited beside the old tree where Walter liked to hide. After what felt like forever, my rod shook again. This time, after a lot of effort, I finally pulled Walter close enough to hold him. Walter was more beautiful than I imagined, shining silver in the early sunlight. Yet when I lifted him from the water, his bright colour slowly got darker, and his eyes seemed strangely sad. At that moment, I suddenly understood something: ________ So I gently put Walter back into the river and let him go, but just before he swam off, I thought I saw him smile. Later, when I told Grandpa about it, he only smiled and said knowingly, “Yeah, that’s Walter.” Even now, years later, that morning remains one of my warmest memories—not because I finally caught Walter, but because I learnt to respect life. 16.What was the writer’s impression of Walter at first? A.He was scary. B.He was strong. C.He was hard to catch. D.He was friendly to keep. 17.Why did the writer return to the river alone the next morning? A.To catch Walter. B.To find a different fish. C.To get back the fishing rod. D.To prove Grandpa was wrong. 18.Which of the following can be put in “________”? A.Walter belonged to the river, not to me. B.Patience and luck are the keys to a big catch. C.The river was no place for such a beautiful fish. D.We should never give up until we reach our goals. 19.How did the writer’s feelings change in the passage? A.Surprised→upset→sorry→excited→amazed. B.Happy→surprised→sorry →worried→calm. C.Worried→excited→happy -upset→sorry. D.Excited→upset→amazed→sorry→calm. 20.What’s the best title for the passage? A.Grandpa’s secret B.More than a catch C.A valuable fishing rod D.The smartest fish in the world 【答案】16.C 17.A 18.A 19.D 20.B 【导语】本文讲述了作者小时候与爷爷钓鱼,历经波折抓到传说中的鱼(Walter),最终因尊重生命将其放回的故事。 16.第1段中的句子“Many people tried to catch him, but he could always slip away...”及第2段中的句子“The big ones are never easy to catch.”表明,Walter非常聪明且难以被抓到。 17.第3段中的句子“The next morning, I got up early and returned to the river alone...I finally pulled Walter close enough to hold him.”表明,作者第二天独自返回河边的目的是为了再次尝试抓住Walter。 18.第4段中的句子“...his eyes seemed strangely sad.”及后文“So I gently put Walter back into the river...”和第5段“...learnt to respect life.”表明,作者意识到鱼属于自然河流而非人类。 19.第2段中的“...cried excitedly”、“I felt as if I had lost something valuable...upset...”、第4段中的“...more beautiful than I imagined...”、“...eyes seemed strangely sad.”及第5段中的“warmest memories”表明,作者的情感变化过程是兴奋、失落、惊叹、同情到平静。 20.最后一句“...not because I finally caught Walter, but because I learnt to respect life.”表明,文章主旨不仅是抓鱼的经历,更是关于生命尊重的感悟,“More than a catch”最能概括这一核心主题。 C How do we know the time? A clock, a watch or a mobile phone can help us. However, many years ago there were no clocks and knowing the time was not so easy. Over the centuries people have developed different ways of telling the time. About 5,500 years ago, the Egyptians invented the sun clock. This was a tall stone building. Its shadow showed the movement of the sun. So people were able to know midday. The Egyptians made a sundial  (日晷) about 3,500 years ago. It was smaller than the sun clock and could let people know the time for half a day. On cloudy days or at night it was impossible to tell the time with a sun clock or a sundial. Water clocks were the first clocks not to use the sun. The idea is simple. Water flows, and it shows the hours. The Egyptians used water clocks about 3,400 years ago. These clocks were popular in the Middle East and China. But they failed to make people know the exact time. In the 13th century, the mechanical clock was invented. This was more exact, but it was expensive to make one. Over the next few centuries, springs (发条) were added around 1500. This made people able to get the correct time and allowed clocks to be smaller. In 1927, the first quartz clock was developed. It was also cheaper for ordinary people to own a clock. People began depending on them more and more to run businesses, markets and so on. More recently, in 1956, the digital clock came. And nowadays satellites send our mobile phones the time to the exact second. There has been a lot of progress in timekeeping. Clocks are always changing but some things never change. Many of us still have trouble getting out of bed on time and not being late for school or work. 21.According to the passage, we can’t use a ________ to tell the time on a rainy day. One of the main reasons is that the teenage brain is still developing. The part of the brain that controls emotions grows faster than the part that controls decision-making. 27 This is why teenagers sometimes make quick decisions without thinking about the results. Another reason is that teenagers often face more stress than before. Schoolwork becomes harder, friendships become more complex, and parents may have higher expectations. 28 When this happens, teenagers may feel sad, angry, or anxious for no clear reason. However, these changes are completely normal. 29 In fact, the teenage brain is very flexible, which means it can learn new things quickly. This is the best time to develop good habits and learn new skills. So what can teenagers do to manage their emotions better? First, they should talk to someone they trust when they feel upset. 30 Second, getting enough sleep and exercise can help the brain stay healthy. With the right support, every teenager can get through this stage successfully. A.That is why teenagers can sometimes feel like their emotions are out of control. B.Scientists have found that there are some clear reasons behind these feelings. C.All these pressures can build up and cause emotional changes in the brain. D.This means that teenagers are not just being difficult — they are actually growing and learning. E.Second, regular exercise can help reduce stress and improve mood. A.Archimedes and Inventions B.Archimedes and Mathematics C.The Achievements of Archimedes D.The Life Experience of Archimedes B When I was young, Grandpa often took me fishing by the river near our house. At that moment, I suddenly understood something: So I gently put Walter back into the river and let him go, but just before he swam off, I thought I saw him smile. 21.According to the passage, we can’t use a to tell the time on a rainy day. D Have you ever wondered why teenagers often feel moody and stressed? 26 The teenage brain is going through big changes, and this can affect how we feel and act. F.Sharing your feelings with a friend or family member can help you feel much better.
