This lesson is the first lesson of the starter unit in Grade Seven Volume One published by Foreign Language Teaching and Research Press. Centered on the theme "Welcome to junior high!", it is closely connected with the real life of students who have just graduated from primary school. The teaching objectives require students to review vocabulary about school supplies, subjects and clothes. Students will learn to talk about all kinds of preparations needed for the start of junior high school. Besides, they can use their imagination to design school uniforms for students in the future. In this way, comprehensive training of vocabulary, grammar, oral expression and creative thinking can be achieved. The class begins with the lead-in "Welcome to junior high!", which makes it clear that junior high school is a brand-new stage of study. Students will meet a new campus, new subjects and new friends. Through Free Talk, students are guided to compare the differences between primary school and junior high school and share their feelings about entering junior high school. It activates students’ life experience and naturally leads to the core topic of "preparations for the new term". In the Look and say section, with the help of pictures, students learn expressions such as pack schoolbags and preparations. From buying school things and remembering school rules and schedules to getting mentally ready to meet new classmates, we sort out all preparations for the new term and help students figure out what they need to do to get ready for school in real life. The listening material is a family conversation between Li Ming, Li Meng and their mother. Students practise filling in blanks and multiple-choice questions to consolidate words of stationery, including schoolbags, pencil boxes, pens, rulers and textbooks. The conversation creates a real situation, helping students get familiar with cardinal numbers and the usage of indefinite articles "a/an". We review subject words learned in primary school and expand new junior high subjects, such as geography, history, biology, physics and chemistry. Students learn their English expressions and pronunciations to enrich topic vocabulary. Then we move to the theme of clothes. Words like shirts, skirts, sports shoes, coats, hats and dresses are learned. Students practise describing clothes in English, finish listening tasks and oral description exercises. They master the sentence pattern "They're going to wear…" and understand that the structure be going to is used to talk about future plans and intentions. We also compare it with "will" and learn that these two expressions can be used interchangeably in some cases. Grammar is the key part of this lesson. We systematically introduce countable and uncountable nouns, and sort out rules for the plural forms of countable nouns. The rules include adding "-s" directly; adding "-es" after words ending in s, x, ch and sh; changing "y" into "i" and adding "-es" after consonant letters; adding "-es" after some words ending in "o"; changing "f/fe" into "ves". We also summarize irregular plurals, including nouns with the same singular and plural forms and words with vowel changes. We explain the features of uncountable nouns and point out that we cannot use "a/an" or numbers before them. We introduce rules of cardinal numbers from 1 to 1000, focusing on the spelling of teens, tens and numbers between twenty-one and ninety-nine. The basic usage of articles a/an and the is explained to tell the difference between general reference and specific reference. Textbook sentences are used to deepen students’ understanding. At the end of the class is the extended activity "Future Fashion Design". Students are asked to design future school uniforms and write down their design ideas, followed by pair work for oral practice. This activity combines language output with creative work. Students are encouraged to use the vocabulary of clothes and future tense sentence patterns learned in this lesson to express their ideas. It develops students’ imagination and the ability of oral communication in groups. As the opening lesson of junior high English, this class connects vocabulary, listening, grammar, speaking and creative tasks through real-life situations. It not only reviews knowledge learned in primary school but also lays a solid foundation for later English learning in junior high. Students accumulate topic vocabulary and master key grammar points such as noun plurals, cardinal numbers, articles and the simple future tense. More importantly, they learn to talk about school life in English. Meanwhile, it guides students to prepare for junior high school in materials, daily routines and mental state. The lesson achieves the combination of language learning and emotional education. Starter Welcome to junior high!
