It was a rainy, damp December day, the cold drizzle pattering against my car window as I headed to the store to pick up another week’s worth of food. The gray sky hung low, and the air was filled with the chill of winter, making the whole day feel gloomy. I had put off shopping for Christmas presents until later in the month, fearing the chaotic crowds of holiday shoppers — they always made the store feel tight and overwhelming. As I drove, I kept the CD player on, turning up the soft music to drown out the radio news, which always seemed to be filled with stories of division and conflict, leaving me feeling helpless and discouraged.
Still, I gave my young son a dollar, telling him to put it in the charity worker’s red container by the store door — a small act of kindness to ease the world’s divisions. We went in, and the warm air inside hit us, a welcome relief from the cold rain outside. We quickly filled our cart with groceries — fresh vegetables, bread, and some treats for the upcoming holiday. Then we walked towards the self-checkout machines. I hated using them; I much preferred chatting with the friendly cashiers, who always had a smile and a kind word. But the line at the regular registers was five deep, and I just didn’t have the time to wait.
As I pulled my cart up to a self-checkout machine, I heard the man next to me complaining quietly, his face lined with frustration. He only had a few items — a loaf of bread, a carton of milk, and a jar of jam — but every time he put his wrinkled, well-worn twenty-dollar bill into the machine, it was rejected. He sighed heavily, running a hand through his gray hair, clearly trying his hardest not to curse. I could tell he was growing more and more upset, his hands shaking slightly as he tried again and again to feed the bill into the machine.

The annual cross-country tryout notice was posted on the school bulletin board, creating a tense atmosphere in our class. As the running team captain, I took double responsibility. I needed to compete for a top position and help my best friend Ben qualify for the school team. Ben was a fast runner but lacked steady endurance, which caused him to collapse from tiredness and fail to finish last year’s race.
To help him achieve his goal, I followed a private arrangement from my coach. I would act as his pacer in the tryout, setting a steady early speed to help him build a comfortable running rhythm and preserve energy for the final stage. The plan was practical, yet it brought me inner unease. Ben always saw me as a fair competitor and trusted me to race side by side with him.
The tryout took place on a misty morning. When the starting gun fired, all runners rushed forward at full speed. I kept a proper lead over Ben to control the pace, constantly aware of his heavy breathing behind me. After running two kilometers, I looked back and found Ben struggling with exhaustion but still closely following my footsteps with full trust.
An unexpected accident occurred during the race. My left shoelace came loose, making me trip and fall on the grass. Ben slowed down immediately, caught in a dilemma between pursuing his dream and caring for me. I struggled to my feet and signaled for him to keep running.
We continued the race soon, but my ankle began to ache badly. I could no longer maintain the steady pace, and we gradually fell behind the leading group. Surprisingly, Ben gave up his competitive speed and adjusted his stride to match my awkward movement. Watching his considerate choice, I felt complicated inside, knowing my well-intentioned plan had put us both in an awkward situation.

Lila Parker, a 16‑year‑old high school student, set off early on a rainy Saturday morning for a city‑wide speech contest 30 miles away. She had practiced for months and was eager to show her skills. Though the weather forecast warned of heavy rain in the mountain area, she took the scheduled bus, thinking the rain would lighten up soon. But things went worse than expected. Halfway through the mountain road, a small landslide blocked the highway, and all buses had to stop. Passengers were told the road would not reopen until the next day.
Unwilling to miss the contest, Lila decided to take a narrow forest path she had heard about, which could cut the journey short. She walked for an hour, but the pouring rain blurred her way. Worse still, she twisted her ankle on a slippery rock and could barely walk. As daylight faded, panic grew inside her. She tried to call for help, but there was no phone signal in the mountains. She limped to a broken wooden shelter by the path and huddled there, cold and helpless, wondering if she would make it to the contest.
Lila was woken by a soft voice. An elderly man in a green ranger uniform stood in front of her, holding a flashlight. He was Mr. Hale, a forest ranger who was doing his evening patrol. He gently helped her up and took her to his nearby ranger station. There, he dried her wet clothes, put a bandage on her ankle, and made her a cup of warm ginger tea. Lila told him about her speech contest, her voice filled with disappointment.

By the time I’d realized my Kindle was gone, I was already on my next flight. The year was 2014 and I was treating myself to a trip to South Africa before starting my first graduate job, but this was not an auspicious (吉兆的) beginning. I’d left the Kindle in the seat pocket in front of me during the 14-hour Sydney to Johannesburg leg and I was horrified.
My e-reader was my constant companion and comfort, living under my pillow after I read myself to sleep every night. I had spent months curating (精心挑选) a selection of my favourite books, and now it was gone. Still, I was almost in Cape Town, and I couldn’t let it ruin my holiday. To me, South Africa was both foreign and familiar, the place of my parents’ birth but not my own.
A few days later, my phone pinged (响了一下). An unauthorized user had tried to send a document to my Kindle account. A Google search of the email suggested it belonged to a young man from Pakistan. I thought it curious that my Kindle had resurfaced with a person who, like me, was from somewhere far away from the place it had been lost. I wondered what had brought him to South Africa and if he found the country as beautiful and vibrant as I did. I sent him an email, asking if he had found my Kindle and, if so, could he please return it.
Almost instantly, I received a reply. He had bought the Kindle from someone and loved my book collection. He asked if he could keep it — he’d be happy to pay me for it but, if not, he would return it. I was touched by his enthusiasm for my book collection. Now that there was a prospect of getting my beloved Kindle back, I was eager to seize it.

Every day on my way home from school, I passed a group of stray cats (流浪猫) behind our apartment building. They stayed together in cold corners, their fur dirty and their eyes filled with a mix of hope and fear. As I watched them suffer through changing weather, I could not shake the feeling that I needed to take action. These were not just wild animals. They were living creatures that deserved basic care, so I decided to do whatever I could to help them.
Every morning before school, I packed small bags of cat food and bottled water. I went to the courtyard and poured food into several safe spots. At first, the cats ran away at my approach. Slowly they grew less afraid. Soon they would appear from dark corners, cautiously moving toward me. This daily feeding turned into a quiet routine that built trust between us.
When winter drew near, temperatures dropped sharply. I could not bear to imagine them freezing in open air. I came up with a plan. With my parents’ permission, I cleaned the damp unused basement (地下室) of our building. I arranged old blankets to make warm, sheltered beds for the cats. It became their safe place to escape freezing wind and snow.
Not every neighbour supported my work. One man complained loudly, saying stray cats were a trouble. He threatened to call Animal Control to remove them. We argued more than once. Still, I refused to back down. These cats had no one else to defend them.
I started posting adoption information online and told my friends and relatives about the cats. Slowly, good news arrived. Three cats found warm permanent homes with loving families. One shy orange cat remained. No one seemed interested in him. I kept caring for him through the long winter.

“You’re all that I need…” A soft, melodic tune drifted from the bathroom, mixed with the sound of running water. Arav and Anaya, who were busy building blocks in the living room, froze for a second. They exchanged a puzzled look, then burst out laughing and started wiggling to the rhythm.
“Is Papa really singing that modern song?” asked seven-year-old Anaya, her big eyes wide with disbelief.
“Looks like our dad has finally upgraded his playlist!” grinned ten-year-old Arav.
This was a home where laughter never ran out. Arav was a curious boy — sometimes responsible like a little adult, sometimes mischievous (淘气的) enough to drive his mother crazy. Anaya, sweet as candy, was always bubbling with wild ideas. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows and family photos on the wall seemed to smile along.
As Papa came out, Anaya dashed over like a tiny rocket and hugged his leg. “Papa, you should have been a professional singer!” she declared.
Papa bent down, pinched her cheek, and gave a shy, gentle smile.
Just then, Mummy walked in from the kitchen with a plate of fruit. “Well, your father wasn’t just any singer — he was the star vocalist of the college band! Every campus festival ended with his solo performance,” she said, her eyes sparkling.
“Wow!” Arav’s eyes lit up. “Then you should join the community singing competition next month. You’d win for sure!”
Papa waved his hand, his tone light but with a faint trace of gloom. “Oh, son, that’s ancient history. Now it’s time for work.” He chuckled and got dressed.
Once Papa left for the office, the two children immediately surrounded Mummy, begging for more stories. Mummy told them how Papa once formed a band, wrote love songs, and even dreamed of a music career — but gradually set aside his microphone to support the family. Arav and Anaya listened, fascinated. A secret plan began to grow in their little hearts.
That night, tucked under their blankets, they whispered excitedly. “We have to make Papa sing again!” Arav said.
“But how?” Anaya asked.

Ten-year-old Tom always felt lonely. His parents were always occupied with work. They left home early in the morning and came back late at night. Tom often ate dinner alone and went to bed without a goodnight kiss. For him, there were no family games, no city tours, no weekend outings.
One day, Tom's parents brought home a gift—a smart watch. "This watch has a special friend inside,” Mom said with a smile. "Her name is Ling. She can talk to you, answer your questions, and even tell you stories.” A wave of anticipation swept over Tom as he put on the watch and pressed the button. A gentle voice came out, "Hello, Tom! I'm Ling. Nice to meet you!” Tom's eyes lit up. He had never received such an interesting gift before.
From that day on, Ling became Tom's closest companion. Every morning, Ling would say, "Good morning, Tom! Have a great day at school!” Whenever Tom encountered difficulties with his homework, Ling would patiently provide thorough explanations. After Tom got into bed, Ling would tell his favorite tales about brave knights and magical lands. Sometimes, when Tom felt scared of the dark, Ling would sing softly to comfort him. To Tom, Ling was more than a voice; she was family.
His parents noticed Tom's change. "See? Our little boy seems much happier now,” Dad said one evening. Mom agreed, "The watch really helps,” relieved. They thought their son was no longer lonely. What they didn't know was that sometimes, after Ling had finished her stories, Tom would lie awake in the darkness, listening to the silence that filled the room. He loved Ling, but he couldn't help thinking: if only Mom and Dad were here.
One afternoon after school, Tom tripped and fell on the way home. The watch hit a rock with a loud crack. When Tom picked it up, the screen was dark. He pressed the button again and again, but nothing appeared. "Ling? Ling, are you there?” he called desperately. There was no reply.

It was a bright, unseasonably warm Saturday in late April when 32-year-old Bennett Reinhardt and his childhood friend Mary decided to go kayaking (皮划艇) on the Elk River, a winding, fast-moving waterway that cuts through the hills of northern Alabama. The plan was simple: paddle a gentle stretch, enjoy the sunshine, and be back by mid-afternoon. Neither had any idea the day would turn into a fight for survival.
The trouble started almost immediately. The river, swollen from days of heavy rain, was running much faster than usual. Within minutes of launching, the current grabbed their kayaks and swept them downstream far quicker than they’d anticipated. Before they knew it, they’d drifted into a narrow, rocky gorge (峡谷) known locally as “The Narrows”.
Panic set in as Bennett’s kayak crashed into a rock and turned over. He hit the water hard, the cold current instantly stealing his breath. Mary, who was just ahead, managed to paddle to the bank and climb to safety, but Bennett was gone — swept downstream, bouncing off rocks, his body rolling in the icy water.
Some 200 yards downstream, Bennett finally managed to grab onto a small tree growing out of the riverbank. The tree he clung to was small, its roots barely holding in the soft soil. Each surge of current pulled at his body, threatening to tear him loose. Bennett’s hands were numb, his muscles shaking from hypothermia (失温), his mind foggy from the shock. He clung there, gasping, as the water raged past. He shouted for help, but the roaring current drowned most of his voice. His strength was fading fast, and he knew he couldn’t hold on much longer. “Please,” he whispered, “someone help me.”
Tom Carter, a construction worker who lived a half-mile from the river, was working in his yard. He had lived there his whole life and had pulled more than one careless paddler out of trouble.

Last year, when I was in the 11th grade, my friend Rameesa and I were chosen to make a presentation at a school fair. The day before the event, we were asked to make some last-minute changes, which took a few extra after-school hours to complete. With home at least 30 kilometres away by bus, I called my parents from a teacher’s phone to let them know I’d be later than usual.
After saying goodbye to Rameesa, I boarded a direct bus to my neighbourhood and settled into a window seat for the long ride back. The bus was crowded with tired office workers and students like me, and the evening light outside was slowly fading.
At some point, lulled (使安静) by the steady movement of the bus, I fell asleep. When I finally woke up and looked around, my heart skipped a beat — I found myself in an unfamiliar area. The street names meant nothing to me, and nothing looked familiar. It was 7: 00 p.m. and getting dark fast. I had clearly missed my stop by a long distance. In a panic, I rushed out at the next stop, holding my schoolbag tightly, unsure of what to do next.
The place where I got off was nearly empty, except for a few construction workers walking around in the distance. There was a slum (贫民窟) not far away, with small shacks (棚屋) crowded together, but no shops or public phones where I could call home. The streetlights were weak and far apart, casting long, uncertain shadows on the ground.
As I stood there trying to figure out a way out of my difficult situation, I suddenly had the feeling that I was being watched. A chill ran down my back. I looked around and saw a woman holding a child in her arms, staring at me from the edge of the slum. Her appearance — short, thin and with untidy hair, her sari (纱丽) dirty and torn — did nothing to make me feel safe. Wild thoughts flooded my mind, and I convinced myself that someone who looked like her could only be dangerous. My mind told my body to run, but I couldn’t move.

I was an arrogant (傲慢的) high school boy full of blind self-confidence, firmly believing that I was more capable than all my classmates at managing group tasks. When our teacher formally announced that our school would hold a lively campus charity fair to raise money for poor children in remote villages, I volunteered without hesitation to take charge of the second-hand book stall. I also actively persuaded nearly ten warm-hearted classmates to donate their unused books to support my booth.
My thoughtful classmate Lina had kindly reminded me in advance to classify different kinds of books, mark clear and reasonable prices, and design simple promotional posters to attract visitors. However, I rudely turned down her sincere advice and even laughed openly at her for being overly cautious. I gathered large piles of various books, including interesting storybooks, popular magazines and practical exam reference books. Without any careful arrangement, I stuffed these mixed books randomly into several rough cardboard boxes.
On the official day of the charity fair, while other groups devoted plenty of time and energy to decorating their stalls with colorful ribbons and beautiful handwritten signs, I did almost no preparation at all. I just laid all my books in a total mess on the table and wandered around the campus casually, firmly convinced that high-quality books alone would naturally draw a large number of buyers.
As noon slowly rolled around, all the neighboring stalls were packed with busy and energetic students. In sharp contrast, almost no one stopped or spared a glance at my book booth. Worse still, several reference books accidentally slipped off the table and got badly stained by the fruit juice spilled by passing students.
Standing alone beside my cold booth, I watched Lina’s handmade toy stall become extremely popular and listened to their cheerful and merry laughter. Strong regret and great embarrassment wrapped me tightly. I fully realized that my stupid arrogance and laziness had wasted my classmates’ kind donations. Just as I sank into deep self-blame and despair, Lina finished her temporary work and walked straight towards me.

I stood in front of a group of students with expectant faces, hoping the speech I wrote would be good enough so that I could stand out as the student speaker at the graduation ceremony. The board sat before me, including some high-school teachers with whom I was not familiar, except for one, Mr. Timmons. He had been my English teacher for two years.
Mr. Timmons had a warm smile and genuinely cared for his students. From the first day of my high school year, I knew I’d enjoy his class. It didn’t take him long to discover my love of literature. He was impressed that I chose to read the Iliad in my free time. As I progressed and we discussed what I was learning from Shakespeare, Mr. Timmons realized my appreciation of different literary works and began suggesting other books he thought I would like.
Life took an unexpected turn when my father lost his job, placing large pressure on our family’s finances. Shortly after, my grandfather’s passing away plunged (使陷入) us into great sorrow and hardship. My father turned to alcohol to cope, leaving me to shoulder the responsibility of caring for my family. With no time for reading, I even considered leaving school to find work and assist my mother in supporting the family. When I attended Mr. Timmons’ class, I told him about my circumstances and plans.
In a soft voice, Mr. Timmons responded, “I’m sorry for what you are going through. I’m here to support you. I will provide you with material assistance so you can help your family and continue your studies. Remember, never give up on your dreams.”
His words warmed my heart. “I won’t,” I promised.
Guided by his care and encouragement, I continued my love for literature and committed myself to studying. Mr. Timmons became both my mentor (导师) and my friend, offering great support when I ran into difficulties. He listened attentively and nurtured my passion for writing. With his help, my grades steadily improved, and I emerged as an exceptional student. Soon it was graduation time.

It was summer. Not a lot of good sounds could be heard on our street except for police sirens (警报声) and ambulances. Next door, a man often yelled, his shouts sometimes quickly followed by a soft thump.
“You hear that?” my brother asked me.
“What?” I said.
“The ice-cream truck.”
I listened. And there it was. That tiny little sound twinkling somewhere nearby. When you hear an ice-cream truck on your street, it means that someone has thought of you.
I slid the chain off the door and unlocked it. I grabbed my brother and we ran outside to the street. The sound of the ice-cream truck was so loud, so close. My brother and I waved it down.
We were crazy in our joy, screaming out what we wanted to eat, and for some reason the truck owner, Terry, made it for us. We licked our fingers and wrists, trying not to let the summer heat take it away from us.
We hadn’t noticed the ice-cream truck leaving, its loud music pulling away, growing distant. My brother looked over at me with sudden worry, and said, “I forgot to pay. Did you?”
I forgot, too.
I understood then why ice-cream trucks maybe didn’t come to our street. When we’d heard the ice-cream truck before, it was always a street over, where there were brick houses with front lawns and bright flowers.
I would be thirty-five this summer and I moved to where its music felt the loudest. I reminded myself that the ice-cream truck hadn’t showed up for decades, neither did my brother, who had died years ago. There was no one to ask, “You hear that?” I missed him as well as the truck.
Yet one day, the music was again. Faint, twinkling. I dashed out of the door and decided to buy one.

Asher loved spending time in his grandfather's garden. Every evening, he carefully held the watering can as his grandfather showed him how to pour just the right amount on each plant. “These plants need us, Asher,” Grandpa often said. “If we take care of them, they will take care of us.”
Asher loved plants. He loved their bright green leaves, the way they danced in the wind, and how fresh they smelled after rain. Plants made him feel calm and safe. But when it came to people, Asher was not so confident. At school, he was one of the quietest kids. While others laughed and played loudly, he often sat alone, unsure how to join them.
One afternoon during break, Asher walked past the big oak tree (橡树) near the playground. A group of kids stood nearby, pulling leaves from its lower branches and throwing them into the air. “Look! Leaf rain!” one of them shouted, laughing.
Asher’s chest tightened. He loved trees. He knew that leaves helped trees breathe and grow. He wanted to say something, but fear held him back. What if they laughed at him? What if they ignored him? After a moment, he turned away and walked back to the classroom without saying a word.
That evening, Asher sat in the garden with his grandfather, watering the plants as usual, but his mind was not at peace. His silence did not escape Grandpa. After a while, Asher shared what had happened at school and how he felt. He explained that he wanted to protect the tree but did not feel brave enough.
His grandfather listened carefully. He told Asher that courage does not mean being fearless. It means doing what is right, even when fear is present. He reminded Asher that change often begins with one small voice and one brave choice. Those words stayed in Asher’s mind all night.

Ms. Wilson was widely known as the strictest teacher in the entire grade. She carried herself with seriousness, never joining in casual small talk or lighthearted jokes with her students. Though her class was famously lively and mischievous (顽皮的) — always buzzing in other teachers’ lessons — the students treated her with absolute respect. No one dared to fool around or crack a silly joke in her presence, for they knew she tolerated no indiscipline.
Rarely was a smile seen on her face. Careful in every task, she ran her classes and daily work with precise perfection. Every lesson plan was flawlessly (无瑕地) organized, every assignment graded with careful attention, and every classroom rule strictly carried out. It seemed she was determined to keep every single detail of her professional life on track, leaving no room for the slightest mistake or chaos.
One ordinary morning, however, an unexpected incident broke her usual routine. As the school bell rang to signal the start of class, Ms. Wilson stepped into the classroom with her usual steady and serious expression. To her immediate confusion, silence did not fall as usual. Instead, low whispers and giggles spread through the rows of desks. Before long, Hammond, the naughtiest boy in the class, couldn’t help but let out a laugh, drawing even more curious glances among the students.
Frowning, Ms. Wilson shot him her sharp warning look — the one that always instantly quieted all mischief and made everyone sit up straight. Hammond quickly shut tight his mouth, but his shoulders still shook with fun, and the awkward murmurs in the room did not fade away.
What surprised her most was that even Shelly, the most sensible and well-behaved girl in the class, could no longer keep calm. Sitting straight in her seat, Shelly’s eyes were wide with amusement, and she seemed eager to say something yet a bit hesitant. When their eyes met, Shelly, with courage, gestured toward Ms. Wilson’s feet with a subtle hand movement.

Stricken by poliomyelitis (小儿麻痹症) at a young age, I suffered a disabled leg and ugly teeth. These flaws left me extremely shy and insecure. I kept to myself and rarely interacted with others. Though stuck in self-doubt, I was dearly loved by my father, who always comforted and encouraged me patiently.
One warm spring, my father brought home several young trees and asked each child to plant one. As luck would have it, I got the weakest of them all, a thin, dying little tree with yellowish leaves. “Whoever grows the strongest tree — or whoever tries their best — will get a wonderful gift,” my father promised with a gentle smile.
I also hoped to win the gift, yet low self-esteem weighed heavily on me. Looking at my pitiful little tree, I couldn’t help seeing myself in it — weak, flawed, and destined to be left behind. The thought only deepened my despair. “Even if I tried, this tree would never stand a chance.” I muttered bitterly. Convinced I would end up failing, I refused to make any effort. I planted the tree carelessly and watered it just twice. Later, I stayed away from the corner on purpose. My brothers tended their trees devotedly to compete for the prize, while I pretended not to care.
Weeks slipped past before I knew it. Out of a strange urge, I plucked up courage to check on my tree. Much to my surprise, the ignored little tree grew far stronger than my brothers’. My father said gently, “See? This little tree was the weakest of all, yet it has become the strongest. Never judge a life by how it starts.” Then he handed me the promised gift.
For the first time, a ray of hope welled up inside me. One quiet moonlit night, unable to fall asleep, I resolved to go outside and look after my tree.

Alan McKenzie was coming down a mountain bike trail on a Sunday morning when he became aware of an ache in the middle of his chest. At the time, he was working as a specialist anaesthetist (麻醉师) with years of experience, so he immediately recognized the significance of the sensation. He was having a heart attack — halfway down a mountain, somewhere an ambulance would not be able to reach him.
He knew that to have any chance of making it out alive, he had to get himself down to the car park. So he coasted on his bike to the bottom of the trail, every bump in the path sending waves of central chest pain through his body. He made it to his car, pulled out his phone with trembling fingers, and called for an ambulance. The dispatcher (调度员) told him to stay where he was and keep still.
Quickly starting to feel worse, Alan lay down on the ground next to his car so that the paramedics (急救人员) would be able to spot him when they arrived. The world around him continued as if nothing had changed. He could hear the wheels of other mountain bikes skidding past him in the car park as people headed home or off to new trails. One bike passed. Then another. Then a third. Nobody stopped. Feeling increasingly faint, Alan wondered if anyone would notice him at all before the ambulance arrived.
Then, through the haze of pain, he heard a voice. “Hey, are you OK?” A cyclist had stopped and was standing over him, a concerned face Alan could barely make out. Alan managed to say that he thought he was having a heart attack, but that the ambulance was on its way. The stranger crouched down beside him and said simply, “We will wait with you until it gets here.”

The tip of my fishing pole jerked twice and then bent in half as the line went tight. “Hey, Grandpa!” I shouted. “It’s Walter!”
“Can’t be Walter,” he said, walking to my side. “I’ve had him on my line many times, but he’s always managed to slip the hook.”
While Grandpa was talking, Walter was swimming. He swam down deep, and then he swam to the surface and cleared out of the river, flapping his tail and shaking his head. Just before he fell back with a mighty white splash, I thought I saw him wink at me. It was such a human gesture that for a moment I forgot he was a fish — he was just another creature fighting for his life, and somehow I admired him for it. But that didn’t make me want him any less, at least then.
“That’s a good-sized trout (鳟鱼), though,” Grandpa said. “Keep your rod (鱼竿) tip up and your line tight.” Then he disappeared back down the riverbank.
“No, Grandpa, wait!” I called, but he was already gone. My arm was getting tired and my heart was beating wildly in my chest. I tried my best to do as I was told. But try as I might, something went wrong. My rod went straight and my line went loose, and when I reeled (卷线) in the hook, Walter was gone.
As we walked back home, Grandpa said, “You’re almost as fine a fisherman as I am, did you know that? Yet some fish are meant to stay in the river.” But I was hardly listening. I felt robbed, as if someone had stolen my bike or something. My eyes were burning, and there was a hot hard knot in my throat. “It’s just not fair,” I moaned.
“Maybe you just need a little bit luck,” Grandpa said, putting his big warm hand on my shoulder and drawing me close. I felt better.
That night I tossed and turned and I dreamed of Walter — I pulled him up on the riverbank, carried him home and got my picture in the newspaper, becoming a world-famous fisherman.

It was a sunny Friday afternoon. Doreen looked out and saw her elderly neighbor Mr. Bower across the street sitting quietly in his garage. She had known him well for years, and everyone in the community loved this gentle old man. However, his garage had long been filled with piles of old furniture, discarded tools, worn-out boxes and various small items he could not bear to throw away. Little space was left for him to move around comfortably.
Doreen felt concerned for him. She knew Mr. Bower lived alone most of the time. He kept those old things not only out of habit but also because he cherished memories behind them. Yet the messy garage brought him inconvenience and even safety risks. This time, Doreen made up her mind to help him tidy up the garage in a gentle way.
She walked across the street and knocked softly on the garage door. “Good afternoon, Mr. Bower,” she greeted him with a warm smile. “There are so many items in your garage and most of them are no longer useful to you. Why not hold a yard sale? Many neighbors love practical second-hand goods.”
At first, the old man hesitated. He was deeply attached to his old things and worried that few people would come to buy them. But Doreen managed to persuade him and promised she would help sort items, make price tags, and post online ads. Finally, Mr. Bower nodded and agreed to hold a yard sale the next day.
Fifteen minutes later, Doreen hit the last few necessary keys on her keyboard with satisfaction. She created a detailed online ad for Mr. Bower’s yard sale at 9 a.m. the next day, introducing his old but well-preserved items. She also shared the news in the neighborhood group. Some neighbors showed great interest while others offered to lend a hand.

Two winters ago, my college roommate Paul was gradually losing the ability to do almost everything else. He could still walk, but only with a cane. He could eat solid foods, though with trouble, and could drink the medication powder he mixed into water — but he began coughing more and more as he labored to swallow anything.
Though his body was failing him, Paul was determined to keep our bond free of sorrow. Through messages, he sent us texts encouraging Evan and me to spare him no humor during the time we had left. So jokes, GIFs and memes became the rule. Then he began showing us the“art” he was making. He used his fingers, technically, but not in the way an artist holds a brush; Paul merely typed the words of what he wanted to see into Midjourney, an AI image generator. Seconds later, Midjourney produced four images onto his screen. To us, they looked like real paintings and that no painter would create this way made it all the more humorous.
Pretty quickly, Evan and I started making AI pictures with our own prompts too. We made thousands. Any random thought that crossed our minds, Midjourney absorbed and spat out. Later, beginning that January with an image called“Tension at the Golden Corral buffet.”, we started talking about putting together a 2024 calendar of our AI artwork. It was full of strange creatures and scenes. The calendar was a piece of physical media that the three of us could share throughout the year. We also planned to make a new calendar for 2025 and compile our favorite works into a memory book.
I could probably never argue in favor of what the technology of artificial intelligence might ultimately bring, or its future effect on artists, writers and culture. It does scare me a little. But one thing I am absolutely sure of: AIbrought precious warmth and laughter to my friend Paul struggling with ALS (渐冻症).

“And that’s why I think I’d be good for this job,” I finished typing. I was having an interview online and talking with my potential employer, Ms Black. We had not met in person yet. But from what I had read of her requirements for a personal assistant, I knew I wanted the position. She even had a little pet dog who had the final say on any applicant. “Your puppy sounds so cute,” I added. “I love dogs.” Then, I started to worry that typing that was too much at this early stage and stopped myself from adding anything more.
The bubbles appeared on screen, showing that the lady was typing something in response, when there was a knock at my front door. My mother was in, and as I was in the middle of an online interview, I asked her to answer it. I heard a lot of muffled (模糊不清的) noise and then my mother called my name. I hurried downstairs, wondering what was going on.
Our neighbor was in our entrance hall, holding her little cat, Marley. Tears were streaming down her cheeks. “We were attacked by a big dog,” she wept. Marley was quiet in her arms but alert.
“Are you okay?”
“Yes. But Marley is hurt,” she nodded shakily and said.
“Let’s take Marley to the veterinary (兽医的) hospital. I’ll be with you in a moment.”
I took the stairs two at a time. I was supposed to be in the middle of an interview. There was more writing from my potential employer on the screen, but I took no time to read it. I quickly wrote: “So sorry. Have to go. Neighbor’s cat hurt, taking to veterinary hospital.” Half the words were probably jumbled (乱七八糟的), but I clicked “send” and did not wait for an answer. I just seized my bag and ran back downstairs.

Mark, a diligent college student, balanced his academic pursuits with a part-time job at a bustling coffee shop in downtown Chicago. It was a chaotic Friday evening; the smell of roasted beans mixed with the impatient murmurs of a long queue.
When the “Closed” sign was finally turned over, Mark’s muscles ached for hours of standing. He dragged his tired feet to the counter, wiping away the spilled coffee and counting the cash register.
While checking the cash register, his heart suddenly skipped a beat. There, nestled among the bills, was an extra one hundred dollars — crisp, unfolded, and clearly out of place.
The memory hit him instantly. Earlier, a distracted businessman in a sharp gray suit had paid for his order with a large bill. Overwhelmed by endless orders and urgent shouts, Mark had been in a hurry to serve the next customer and forgot to give him the full change. The man, preoccupied with his phone calls, had hurried out without noticing.
To an ordinary person, it was just a mistake. But to Mark, it was a lifeline. That crisp bill represented his overdue rent and several days of groceries. The shop’s daily earnings were already substantial, and his manager rarely double-checked the extra cash carefully. He could easily slip the money into his pocket, and the difference would likely disappear into the store’s unclear accounts, unnoticed by anyone.
However, a heavy sense of guilt quickly clouded his mind, weighing him down like a stone. He glanced up at the blinking red light of the security camera in the corner, feeling as though it were judging him. He thought of his parents, who had always reminded him of the value of honesty despite their own financial struggles.
Standing in the silent, dimly lit shop, Mark found himself trapped in a fierce internal battle: the desperate relief of financial security against the heavy, inescapable weight of his morality.

Every Thursday afternoon, our school library opened an hour earlier for students who wanted a quiet place to study. It was peaceful there, filled with the smell of old books and sunlight falling through tall windows.
Mrs. Harper, the librarian, knew me well. She was a small woman with silver hair and gentle eyes. Every Thursday, she placed a cup of warm lemon tea on the corner of her desk. “For long study hours,” she would say with a smile. I never forgot the kindness.
One rainy afternoon, I arrived earlier than usual and noticed Mrs. Harper struggling to push a heavy cart (手推车) of returned books across the carpet. I hurried over to help. As we worked together, I noticed that she stopped several times to press a hand against her side. She looked pale. “Are you okay?” I asked. “Just tired,” she answered softly. “Getting older is inconvenient sometimes.”
After that day, I began helping her every Thursday. She always thanked me with the same warm smile and a cup of lemon tea.
One Thursday near the end of the term, I entered the library and found it unusually dark and quiet. The front desk was empty. No tea. No Mrs. Harper. Then I spotted the book cart standing alone near the history shelves. On top of it lay her glasses and a small notebook.
I picked up the notebook carefully. Inside was a handwritten list titled “Things to Finish Before Summer.” Most items had already been crossed out. Only one line remained: “Repair the Reading Corner before students return.” I looked toward the old reading corner by the windows. One chair had a broken leg, the paint on the shelf was chipping, and several cushions (垫子) were torn open. Mrs. Harper had always wanted students to enjoy that little space.
Just then, the principal walked into the library. “She was taken to hospital this morning,” he said quietly. I looked again at the unfinished list in my hands. Outside, rain tapped softly against the windows, making the whole library feel lonelier than before.

In the dusty corner of Grandpa’s attic (阁楼), I came across an old, worn violin case. Puzzled, I opened it, only to find a violin that looked like a piece of abandoned firewood. Its strings were broken, and its wooden body was covered with deep scratches (划痕). To me, a teenager who had been struggling with modern violin pieces, this instrument surely carried a hidden piece of history within it. Driven by curiosity, I carefully carried it down the narrow stairs and placed it on the living room table.
“Why do you keep this junk, Grandpa? It is broken,” I asked, pointing to the case. Grandpa stopped, his eyes softening as he took the violin. He didn’t answer immediately. Instead, he gently wiped the dust off the surface with his trembling hands, as if he were looking at a long-lost friend. “This ‘junk’, as you call it, was my only companion during the years when I worked on the remote farm,” he began, his voice filled with emotion. “Music was a bridge that carried me from the exhaustion of labor to a world of peace. It taught me that as long as you have music in your heart, no hardship can break you.”
Looking at the rough calluses (茧子) on Grandpa’s fingers, I felt a sudden pang of guilt. I had always complained about my violin lessons being boring and difficult, never knowing that for Grandpa, the chance to play music was a hard-won luxury. That night, I made a decision. I would use my savings from my part-time job to have the violin restored.
The next day, I took the instrument to Mr. Miller, a master violin maker known for his “magic touch”. He warned me that the restoration would be a long process. Every weekend, I visited his workshop, watching him carefully glue the cracks and restring the instrument with precision. Meanwhile, I practiced the piece Grandpa loved most, The Moon Over the Fountain, on my own violin every night, preparing for the upcoming school talent show, and made up my mind to give Grandpa a surprise.

I was riding down a mountain bike trail (小路) one Sunday morning when I suddenly felt a strange pain in my chest. Because I had worked as a doctor for years, I knew at once that something was seriously wrong. My heart began to race, and fear quickly filled my mind. I realized I was having a heart attack halfway down the mountain, where no ambulance could easily reach me.
Fighting against the growing pain, I carefully rode my bike to the bottom of the track. Every second felt like forever, but I knew stopping was not an option. By the time I reached the car park, my chest felt as if something were pressing against it. I grabbed my phone from the car and called an ambulance, trying to keep my voice calm as I told the operator exactly where I was.
Soon I became too weak to stand. Afraid that the ambulance workers might not be able to find me, I lay down beside my car. My vision gradually became blurry (模糊的), and I felt weaker with every passing minute. As more cyclists disappeared into the distance without noticing me, I began to wonder whether help would come in time.
Just as I was beginning to lose hope, someone stopped nearby and asked whether I was all right. I managed to whisper that I thought I was having a heart attack and that an ambulance was on its way. The stranger immediately stayed by my side, speaking to me calmly and reassuring me that help would arrive soon. He told me he was Leo, a regular rider on this trail.

It was a sunny Saturday morning, and Jake had just put on his sneakers when his phone buzzed. It was a message from Ryan: “Meet at the park in 15 minutes?” Jake smiled. It had been a long week of school, and he couldn’t wait to play basketball with his friends. Just as he was heading out, his mom called from the kitchen.
“Jake! Come back! I need your help with the storage room.”
“But Mom, I told Ryan I’d meet him at the park,” Jake protested.
“We talked about this. Grandma is moving in this weekend, so we need to clean out the storage room to make space for her.”
“Grandma?” Jake thought, the word feeling almost foreign on his tongue. He didn’t even know her that well — it had been years since she last visited, and now she was moving in? He couldn’t believe he had to give up his Saturday for someone he barely knew. With complaints and sighs, he kicked at the floor as he trudged down the hallway, dragging his feet like they weighed a ton.
Stepping into the storage room, his nose wrinkled in disgust. The place was a disaster. Spiderwebs drooped from every corner, and dust swirled in the sunlight like dirty smoke. Boxes teetered in unstable stacks, a rolled-up carpet with worn edges lay half-spilled across the floor, and forgotten junk crowded every inch. Jake let out a long, dramatic sigh — this job was going to take forever.
Just as he was about to give up and sneak a text to Ryan, a faded blue album tucked at the bottom of the suitcase caught his eye. Faint words were etched on its leather cover: Stories with Jake (To Be Continued…). He pulled it out and flipped it open—the pages were filled with moments of him and his grandmother. On the very first page was a photo — On the very first page was a photo: his grandmother, much younger then, cradling a tiny baby wrapped in a soft blanket. At the bottom of the photo he saw some words in careful handwriting: “Glad to meet you, baby Jake.”

“Tom! You are finally here! Please take a seat,” Mr Hill shouted. I was late again because I had stayed up all night practising calligraphy, neglecting (忽略) daily school routines. He asked for my homework and looked annoyed at my empty hands. I simply stared blankly ahead. I was never tired of studying, but my passion for calligraphy had made me poor at time management. Sighing slightly, he continued the lesson patiently.
Back home as usual, I buried myself in calligraphy practice. Our school would hold a calligraphy competition with generous prizes ahead, which greatly fueled my enthusiasm. As a child from a single-parent family, I watched my mother work tirelessly to support the family. She always tidied my messy writing tools and never discouraged my hobby. Unfortunately, I failed to keep a good balance. I devoted most of my time to preparing for the competition, gradually falling behind in my schoolwork.
My turning point came on an ordinary Monday. While refining my calligraphy works for the upcoming competition, I got a call informing me of my mother’s hospitalization. I rushed to the hospital and saw her weak figure in bed. She said gently, “Tom, the final exam is approaching. I hope you can catch up on your studies.” She had been worn out by much work and was suffering from illness, yet she still cared about my studies and future all the time. In contrast, I was so addicted to my calligraphy hobby that I ignored my schoolwork, adding unnecessary worries to her. I felt overwhelming guilt and regret.
I resolved to change completely. Later, I attended school punctually, focused fully in class and finished all tasks carefully. I only practised calligraphy in my free time, balancing my hobby and studies properly to prepare for the coming exam. Seeing my dramatic positive changes, Mr Hill silently paid close attention to my growth and learned about my mother’s illness and my family’s hardships during daily class communication.

Eddie valued his family’s accordion (手风琴) — a treasure passed down from his grandfather to his father, representing his Mexican-American family’s Tejano music tradition. Raised in San Antonio neighborhood filled with Tejano rhythms, Eddie learned the instrument from his father and formed the band Las Estrellas (“The Stars”) with childhood friends: Luis on drums and Ruben on guitar.
Each day, Eddie hurried to Luis’s house for practice, struggling with the heavy accordion case while worrying about Ruben. Though a gifted guitarist who picked up songs quickly and loved playing with the band, Ruben hated practicing alone. He was always late, and his lack of solo (单独的) practice led to constant mistakes — a growing problem for the trio (三重奏).
Their lives changed when Luis handed Eddie an envelope from the Tejano Festival: an invitation to perform in just two months. The boys celebrated wildly, but Eddie’s joy was mixed with anxiety, hoping the opportunity would motivate Ruben to practice. That night, Eddie shared the news with his family. His father, a former festival winner, presented a trophy (奖杯) with “First Place” written on it and encouraged him, “You belong there and will shine.” Eddie admitted his worry about Ruben, who was too talented and dear a friend to replace. His father advised, “Find out why he won’t practice alone and help him.”
At their next practice, Ruben messed up the festival song at the very beginning. He claimed sore fingers from building a hut (简陋的小屋), but Luis accused him of skipping practice. Ruben got annoyed, and Eddie was angry. Following his father’s advice, Eddie asked Ruben why he didn’t play at home as he should. Ruben admitted, “My guitar sounds lonely alone, and I can’t focus.”
Upon learning where Ruben’s problem lay, Eddie decided to take immediate action to make practice fun for Ruben. On the way to Luis’s, Eddie came up with a plan: practice together at Ruben’s house daily. Luis agreed and they ordered Ruben’s favorite pizza for a surprise.

At eighteen, I had been allowed to drive alone for only a week. One Friday night, my mother asked me to take a bag of books to my aunt, who lived across town. The roads were familiar, and I was proud of myself for being trusted with the little blue car.
On the way home, however, a road repair sign forced me away from my usual route. I followed the arrows through streets I hardly knew. Rain had made the road shine, and the lights of other cars looked doubled on the ground. At a wide crossing, I saw a green arrow and turned quickly, only to realize I had entered the wrong lane. Headlights rushed toward me.
I panicked and pulled the car onto a raised concrete island between the lanes. There was a terrible scraping sound, and then the car stopped. The engine was still running, but the front wheels were hanging in the air. I could neither move forward nor reverse. Drivers slowed down to stare. I waited, embarrassed. My phone had only two percent battery. I tried calling my father, but the call failed before I could explain where I was.
A couple in a small van stopped near me. The woman asked if I was hurt. When I shook my head, she pointed across the road to a brightly lit truck stop. “Someone there may know what to do,” she said. I thanked her, though the idea of walking into the noisy place alone made my mouth dry.
Inside, the smell of coffee and fried food filled the air. A cashier looked up from a crossword puzzle. I told her about the car, my voice shaking. She leaned over the counter, glanced through the window, and then turned toward a table where several truck drivers were eating.

A few nights earlier, I entered David’s room and noticed his beloved guitar gone. Confused, I asked, “Where’s your guitar, son?” He lowered his gaze. “Sorry, mom. I didn’t tell you... I sold it.” “Why would you do that? That guitar meant everything to you.” He hesitated for a moment. “It did. But Emily needed a new wheelchair.”
Then the story came out in a rush. Emily, his friend, was paralyzed (瘫痪的); her old chair was barely working. She kept pretending she was fine — but she wasn’t. She missed lunch twice last week because it took too long for her to get across the building. Her family didn’t have the money for a new one then. What a kind soul! I pulled my boy close and told him we would deliver the chair together.
The next morning, we picked up the wheelchair and drove to Emily’s house. Her father, Nathan, opened the door. Emily froze the moment she saw us carrying a brand-new wheelchair. Emily’s eyes filled with tears instantly. “You bought me a wheelchair?” she whispered. David looked embarrassed. “Yeah.” “How?” David hesitated before admitting, “It’s... the guitar. I just sold it.” Staring at him, she asked in a trembling voice, “Why? You love playing the guitar.” David simply shrugged (耸肩) and replied, “Because we are friends.” At this time, Nathan walked over to David. “Son, you sold something you loved for my daughter?... Thank you.” he said, his voice rough.
I thought that should have been the end of the story. Weeks passed — no guitar, no music. Then one Saturday morning, our doorbell rang.

Kenneth is now a science researcher at Harvard University. But he first came into the spotlight for a button-sized warning device he created at 15, one that greatly eased the burden on caregivers.
Back then, Kenneth lived with his family, including his grandfather, who had Alzheimer’s disease. Late one night, his grandfather was found wandering on a highway. Kenneth’s mother, the main caregiver, had fallen asleep for only a few minutes after days of constant care. Seeing her exhaustion, Kenneth decided to do something. He wanted to keep his grandfather safe while giving his mother some relief.
To learn more, Kenneth visited a local care center and met Ms. Brown, the head of the center. She told Kenneth that many elderly people had the same problem, and their families were under great pressure as well. Kenneth searched for a device that could warn the caregivers when the elderly residents got out of bed. But nothing on the market met the needs. So he was determined to take advantage of his strength in science to make one himself.
Night after night, Kenneth tested sensors and circuits, but the design failed again and again. Yet whenever he thought of his demanding grandfather, his tired mother, and other elderly people in need, he returned to his desk.
A year later, Kenneth finally created a pair of sensor socks. One night, he helped his grandfather put them on and waited with his mother. When his grandfather got out of bed, an alert sounded on his mother’s phone. Overjoyed, his mother said, “You made it! This will be a great help to me!”
Believing that what had helped his family might also help others, Kenneth returned to the care center to introduce the socks. Many caregivers showed interest, but the elderly were less enthusiastic. Ms. Brown asked, “Do they have to wear the socks while sleeping?” Kenneth nodded. “Yes, that’s how it works.”

Jean and John were the proud owners of a popular general store in the small, quiet town of Emerald Forest. Nestled near dense forests and crystal-clear lakes, their cozy shop served both locals and tourists. However, one cold morning, their peaceful routine was suddenly shattered. Upon arriving at work, they found an unwelcome surprise in the candy department: sweets were scattered across the counter, and boxes of chocolates had been violently torn open, leaving a sticky mess!
Puzzled and frustrated, they checked the rest of the store. Amazingly, nothing else was out of place. There was no sign of forced entry; the doors and windows were all securely locked. “Perhaps it was squirrels?” Jean suggested hopefully. But John shook his head, pointing out that squirrels couldn’t possibly have opened the front door. After a day of fruitless guessing, they concluded it must be rats. Determined to catch the thief, John set a trap and placed it near the candy display.
The next morning, they found similar evidence of a break-in, but the rat trap remained completely untouched. Realizing the intruder (闯入者) was far cleverer than they had thought, Jean suggested installing (安装) a hidden camera. A technician quickly set up the equipment, and they waited anxiously for the night to pass.
The following day, they rushed to check the recordings, expecting to see a raccoon (浣熊) or a particularly large rat. The scene on the screen left them absolutely speechless. Staring at the recordings, Jean froze all at once, breath held in her throat. John bent forward, eyes wide and brows raised high. Neither could believe their eyes when watching the unexpected intruder come and go again and again. Too surprised to say a single word, they were filled with a strong feeling of doubt about the strange sight on screen.

Benjamin Belinski considered himself completely talentless while his friends were quite gifted: Kate could make anything using her folding techniques; Tommy created breath-taking beats on overturned plastic buckets (水桶); Olivia trained her small dog to do tricks. There were also four dancers, a gymnast, two bakers, six singers, and five artists in his grade. Every day his teacher Miss White asked if he had decided what to do for the upcoming talent show, and every day he reminded her that he had no talents.
“Nonsense, Benjamin,” Miss White insisted that he think of something. Benjamin, however, planned to be sick on the day of the show to avoid performing. He even asked his friends to cough on him if they got a cold.
Kate shook her head, gathering the group around him. “You must have a talent. Let’s make a list. What are you good at?” Benjamin joked that he was only good at eating and watching TV. Kate rolled her eyes, urging the others to come up with Benjamin’s talents.
Olivia immediately mentioned Benjamin’s remarkable bond with animals, as her dog loved him. Tommy praised his humour and suggested a comedy routine, while Kate reminded him of his excellent birthday parties and game nights. Olivia agreed, adding that he always brought everyone together to do fun things, and noted how boring the week was when he caught a cold. “Yeah, he’s like the glue that holds us together,” Tommy added. “Oh, great.

【答案】【参考范文】
I quickly grabbed a newer twenty out of my purse. It was crisp and clean, having just come from the bank that morning. I tapped the old man gently on the shoulder and handed him the bill with a warm smile. “Excuse me,” I said softly. “Try this one.” He looked up, his tired eyes meeting mine with a mixture of surprise and hesitation. Then he took the bill and fed it into the machine carefully. This time, the green light flashed, and a soft whir announced its acceptance. He let out a long, quiet breath. “Thank you, ma’am,” he murmured repeatedly before pressing his wrinkled twenty-dollar note into my hand.
The old man waved goodbye, leaving us there with that torn twenty in hand. My son tugged my sleeve. “Mama, can we still put that in the kettle?” he asked. I smiled and nodded. As we walked out into the cold drizzle, he dropped the old twenty into the kettle as he usually did, hoping it could bring a little joy to someone in need. That torn, rejected bill had found its place — just like a small kindness on a gloomy December day. As we drove home, we heard a quote from Mother Teresa on the radio: “Help one person at a time and always start with the person nearest you.”

02 浙江天域协作体2026-2027学年高三上学期10月联考英语试题

【答案】例文
Hardly holding back the pain, I whispered to Ben, “Go ahead. Win this for us.” Ben hesitated only a moment, his eyes moving quickly between my badly-twisted ankle and the runners moving ahead. Then, with a deep breath, he rushed forward. Watching him disappear into the mist, I clenched my jaw and pulled myself to my feet. Each step brought sharp pain to my ankle, yet I refused to give up. Step by painful step, I dragged myself on until the finish line came into sight. Crossing it, I fell onto the grass, chest rising and falling fast and my leg aching badly, yet quiet pride rose inside me: I had finished what I had started.
When the results were announced later, Ben sought me out, holding the team list. His name stood fourth on the list, yet his face showed no joy, only guilt. “I got in,” he muttered, eyes looking down. “But I left you behind.” Seeing how upset he was, I forced a smile and held his shoulder. “You ran your race; I ran mine. We tried our best separately and celebrated together.” His nervous body slowly relaxed. Thinking back on everything, I realized that while the team list gave Ben a place, our friendship gained something more valuable: true friendship is built by respecting each other’s efforts even when we go different ways. In that sense, we had both won.

03 江苏省启东中学2027届高三上学期第一次阶段测试英语试题

【答案】
Mr. Hale suggested that Lila take a lesser‑known mountain trail with him at dawn. He explained that the path, though rough, could bypass the landslide and lead straight to the contest venue. He would be on his morning patrol anyway and could guide her all the way. Grateful and relieved, Lila nodded repeatedly. At sunrise, they set off slowly. Mr. Hale walked slowly to match her pace, pointing out wild plants and telling her stories of the forest to ease her nervousness. By nine o’clock, they reached the contest hall just in time.
A week later, Lila came back to the ranger station with her first‑prize certificate. She handed Mr. Hale a handwritten thank‑you note, saying she would have given up without his help. Mr. Hale smiled warmly and said it was what anyone would do. Lila told him she had added his story into her speech, and it had touched every judge. That day, she learned that a small act of kindness could light up someone’s whole world, and she promised to pass on the warmth in the future.

I replied, thanking him for his honesty. I told him that my Kindle was more than just a device to me — it held my favourite books and years of memories. He responded almost immediately, saying he completely understood and would return it. I offered to pay him for his kindness, but he politely refused. He explained that keeping someone else’s treasured possession had never felt right to him. We exchanged a few more emails, and he suggested we meet at a café near my hotel before my flight back home. I agreed with relief and gratitude, counting the hours until our meeting.
In the end, we met in person. He handed me the Kindle with both hands, smiling warmly. I offered him money as a token of gratitude, but he shook his head firmly. “Your books are precious to you — I could tell from your emails,” he said. I thanked him from the bottom of my heart, and in return, I gave him a book from my collection as a gift. He hesitated, then accepted with shining eyes. We parted with a handshake and a promise to stay in touch. I walked away, holding my Kindle close, knowing that the kindness of a stranger had given it back to me — and that was worth more than anything.

【答案】Paragraph 1
As the cold winter continued, the shy orange cat became increasingly quiet and lonely. Hiding in a remote corner of the basement, it barely showed up, even for the food I prepared daily. Timid and inferior, it dared not wander around like other cats. Feeling sympathetic, I spared more time accompanying it, gently stroking its fur and whispering to comfort it. As it gradually trusted me more, it would rub my hand softly to express gratitude. Although the strict neighbor still complained, I remained firm in my kind choice.
Paragraph 2
Luckily, my aunt paid us a visit on a warm spring afternoon. The moment she caught sight of the gentle orange cat, she was deeply fond of it and immediately decided to adopt it. Watching the cat leave for a warm new home, I was filled with a mix of sorrow and pride. Though unable to solve all problems facing stray cats, I had changed several helpless lives. I truly learned that kindness does not require great power. Instead, small, steady efforts can truly make a difference for those helpless around us.

【答案】One possible version:
A few minutes later, Anaya sat upright suddenly, “I’ve got it!” Eyes sparkling with mischief, Anaya said, “We can pretend the competition is ours and ask him to help us practise!” Exchanging a glance, the two sprang out of bed, sprinted downstairs and announced, “We’ve signed up for the contest and need your help, Papa!” The next few days witnessed Papa enthusiastically instructing the kids to control pitch and hit notes, even belting out old classics. The kids pretended to struggle, yet secretly winked at Mummy every time Papa’s voice filled the room.
Finally, the day of the community singing competition came. Not until they stood backstage did Papa hear his name called. The familiar melody hanging in the air, Papa hesitated before being shoved onto the stage. Then came his singing, voice so warm and clear that it moved everyone. As the children provided backing vocals, the outfits Mummy had made sparkled on the stage. Thunderous applause rippled the moment the last note fell. Surrounded by applause and love, Papa realized he had never really stopped being a vocalist — he had just been waiting for the right audience.

【答案】 Tom had no choice but to turn to his parents for help. Clutching the broken watch, he hurried home. Like usual, the house lay empty and quiet. But this time, the loneliness felt unbearable — not because Ling was gone, but because the people he truly needed were absent. He waited and waited. It was nearly midnight when his parents finally returned. They were alarmed to see Tom curling up on the sofa, face wet with tears. “What happened, Tom?” Mom rushed over. Wordlessly, he held out the broken watch. Dad soon fetched his toolbox trying to fix it, but in vain. Seeing this, Tom couldn’t contain himself any longer and burst into desperate sobs. Between gasps, he poured out his loneliness — the silent dinners, the empty house, the longing for someone to be there.
At that moment, both Mom and Dad saw clearly what they had missed. They realized that no watch, however smart, could ever take the place of their presence. Immediately, Mom wrapped her arms around Tom, apologizing, “I’m so sorry. We thought the watch was enough, but we were wrong.” Dad knelt beside them, his voice thick with guilt. “From now on, we’ll be home earlier. No more lonely dinners.” Together they drew up a family schedule — Tuesday night board games, Friday pizza-making, Sunday afternoons in the park. They promised to make it a weekly routine and wrote it on the family calendar in bright colors. That night, the family came to understand technology might offer comfort, but only love could fill the silence of an empty home.

【答案】One possible version:
Paragraph 1:
On hearing the frantic shouts, Tom grabbed a rope and headed toward the water. Reaching the bank, he spotted Bennett clinging to the small tree, his face blue with cold. The bank was steep and slippery, and the current was far too strong to swim against. Tom quickly tied one end of the rope to a sturdy tree and threw the other end toward Bennett. “Grab it!” he yelled. Bennett lunged forward and caught the rope with both hands. Tom braced himself and pulled with all his might, inch by inch, until he seized Bennett’s shoulders and dragged him onto the muddy shore. Bennett collapsed, coughing up water, his whole body trembling. (98)
Paragraph 2:
Moments later, Mary arrived and saw Bennett lying on the muddy bank. She rushed to his side and knelt beside him, her eyes filled with tears. “I thought I’d lost you,” she sobbed. Bennett managed a weak smile and squeezed her hand. “Thanks to him,” he whispered, nodding toward Tom, who was already wrapping his jacket around Bennett’s shaking shoulders. Tom helped them back to his house nearby, where he made hot drinks and called for help. Sitting by the fire, Bennett stared at the stranger who had saved his life and made a silent promise: if ever given the chance, he would do the same for someone else. (97)

【答案】 The next moment I saw the woman slowly walking towards me. My heart was pounding wildly, and I clutched my schoolbag even tighter, ready to scream for help. But to my surprise, she stopped a few steps away and spoke in a soft, gentle voice. “You look lost, little girl,” she said, shifting the sleeping child in her arms. “I noticed you got off the bus looking confused.” She then pulled out an old mobile phone from her pocket and held it out to me. “You can use this to call your family. It’s not safe for a young girl to be out here alone after dark.”
I grabbed the phone with shaking hands and called my father to come pick me up. After hanging up, I stood there awkwardly. The woman didn’t seem to notice my embarrassment, chatting softly about her child to help me relax. When my father arrived, he thanked her repeatedly and offered her money, but she politely refused. As we drove away, I looked back at her small figure standing by the road, and I realized that true kindness has nothing to do with appearance or wealth. That night, I learned never to judge a book by its cover.

【答案】One Possible Version
Seeing my depression, Lina didn’t mention my previous rudeness but proposed a plan. Eager to make amends, I nodded gratefully and we set it in motion. Our forces joined, we split the messy pile into three categories: fairy tales, novels, and review materials. Lina set about creating eye-catching price tags with colorful pens, whereas I humbly borrowed long, elegant ribbons to decorate our table. Knowing students hunted for cheap books, we wiped the juice-stained copies clean and shouted warm promotions. Gradually, as a steady stream of curious buyers gathered, my face flushed with profound guilt for mocking her careful suggestions before.
When the charity fair drew to an end, our book stall unexpectedly topped the donation list. To our immense thrill, the collected cash far exceeded our expectations. The heavy donation box in my hands, I turned to Lina with red-rimmed eyes. Not only did I formally apologize for my unbearable arrogance, but I also thanked her for saving the day. She accepted it softly, a forgiving smile washing away my lingering guilt. Ultimately, this unforgettable experience engraved a priceless truth in my mind: true success is rooted in collaboration rather than blind pride. From then on, I swallowed my ego, always ready to embrace others’ valuable advice.

Paragraph 1:
As graduation approached, the school announced a competition to select the student speaker. Despite my initial hesitation, I remembered Mr. Timmons’ encouraging words, urging me never to give up my dreams. Therefore, I signed up for it and poured my heart into crafting a speech that not only reflected my personal journey but also expressed my gratitude to Mr. Timmons. After several revisions, I felt confident that I had captured the essence of what I wanted to convey. I eagerly anticipated the day of the competition.
Paragraph 2:
Despite my adequate preparation, I was ultimately not chosen as the speaker. Mr. Timmons, true to his supportive nature, pulled me aside after the results were announced. His genuine smile and familiar warmth filled me with a sense of pride. “Your words had already touched many hearts, including mine,” he said softly. “Remember, success isn’t always about winning contests. It’s about the impact you make along the way.” Inspired by his words, I decided to continue using my voice, whether through writing or speaking, to inspire and impact others.

【答案】例文
I closed my eyes and followed the sound. Its twinkling notes led me around the corner, where the old truck stood, with the familiar tune still pouring out. Terry was there too, his eyes lighting up with recognition. The sight of him brought back that summer day, my brother’s excited voice echoing in my ears. I ordered one ice-cream, my childhood rushing back with each word. Terry handed it over, his hands weathered but steady. I stood there for a moment, holding the cone, the summer heat melting the edges and dripping down my fingers, just like before.
I paid Terry the price of three ice-creams. “Three? You only took one.” He pushed the money back, frowning. I explained, my voice shivering, “It is for my brother and that summer we forgot to pay you.” My words seemed to drag him back across the years, back to that hot summer. “Long time no see, kid, ”his voice broke the silence, warm and familiar. Walking home, the music faded behind me. I realized the truck was never about ice-cream but about being remembered. With the sweet taste melting on my tongue and my brother’s memory warm in my heart, that tingling sound finally felt like a song of reunion.

【答案】
The next day during break, Asher saw the same kids pulling leaves just like before. This time, he didn’t walk away. His heart pounded, but Grandpa’s words echoed in his mind: courage means doing what is right even when you are afraid. Taking a shaky breath, Asher stepped forward. “Hey,” he said, his voice barely above a whisper. “Please stop.” The kids turned, surprised. “Leaves help trees breathe,” Asher continued, trying to sound calm. “If you pull them all off, the tree could get sick and die.” For a long moment, nobody spoke. Then one boy dropped the leaf in his hand. “Really?” he asked. “I never thought about that.” Asher nodded, feeling a small wave of confidence. “Instead of hurting it,” he suggested, “we could protect it together.”
The kids soon agreed to Asher’s suggestion. They fetched cardboard and bright markers from the classroom and made a large sign that read, “Protect Our Tree — It Gives Us Shade and Clean Air.” Together, they tied it to the oak tree. Over the next few weeks, the group took turns watering the tree and picking up litter around it. Asher no longer sat alone during break. He stood and laughed with his new friends under the spreading branches. One afternoon, Grandpa came to pick him up and saw the sign. His eyes shone with pride. “You see, Asher?” he said quietly. “You took care of the tree, and the tree brought you friends.” Asher smiled, feeling the warm sun and an even warmer sense of belonging. He finally understood: when we take care of plants, they take care of us in ways we never expect.

【答案】例文
Paragraph 1:
Ms. Wilson glanced down at her own shoes and froze on the spot. A quiet exclamation slipped out of her mouth. It suddenly occurred to her that she had made a silly mistake. Exhausted from a sleepless night, she got up late and hurried to school in a rush that morning. Unconsciously, she had put on two totally different sneakers with different styles. She had worn them all morning without noticing the ridiculous error. Heat flooded her face at once, making her cheeks burn red. As a strict perfectionist who always pursued flawless work and manners, she felt extremely embarrassed in front of her students.
Paragraph 2:
Sensing Ms. Wilson’s embarrassment, Hammond bravely stood up. Smiling sincerely, he comforted her that mismatched shoes were a new and special fashion trend. The other students nodded in agreement to cheer her up. Moved by the kids’ kindness and amused by her own blunder, Ms. Wilson finally relaxed her stern look. She smiled a genuine and warm smile for the first time. The tense atmosphere faded away, and the whole classroom was filled with joy. From then on, the strict teacher built a warmer and closer bond with her students.

From that night on, my life was completely changed.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】 Stepping to the yard corner, I saw someone familiar tending my tree. It was my father, his tall figure bathed in the soft moonlight. He knelt down gently, carefully removing weeds and loosening the soil around the tree with great patience. At that moment, everything clicked — no wonder the weak, dying little tree I had abandoned had thrived so unexpectedly. While I was trapped in self-pity and consumed by my flaws, my father had been silently guarding both the tree and my fragile confidence. Tears blurred my vision, mixed with deep regret and warm gratitude for his silent love.
From that night on, my life was completely changed. I stopped hiding from my imperfections or believing I was destined to fail. Instead of yielding to a flawed start, I chose to embrace life with courage and optimism. I began to take good care of the tree every day and actively reached out to communicate and bond with others. As the little tree grew steadily taller and firmer, I also gained solid confidence and inner strength. Looking back, I came to realize a disadvantaged beginning couldn’t define future growth, and above all, love is the best nourishment of life.

【答案】 Soon, Alan heard ambulance sirens rapidly getting closer. The stranger stood up and waved wildly to guide the ambulance to their position. Paramedics rushed over, quickly carrying out emergency checks and giving Alan first aid. While the medical staff worked, the cyclist comforted Alan, telling him everything would be fine. Alan, weak but relieved, tried to ask for his name. However, the stranger just smiled and said he only did what anyone should do, then quietly left before Alan could get more information.
Eventually back home, Alan found his bike parked against the wall. The painful memory of the heart attack and the cold indifference of other passing cyclists flooded into his mind, yet the thought of that warm stranger brightened his heart. He felt grateful for the unknown cyclist who stayed with him in his darkest moment. Alan decided to pass on this kindness. Whenever he meets someone in trouble outdoors, he will stop and offer help, just like that mysterious cyclist did for him.

【答案】Possible version:
Para. 1
Then at dawn I slipped from my bed and went down to the river. I strung the rod, baited the hook and cast the line — just as Grandpa had shown me. Then I waited — through the first light of dawn, through the birds’ morning songs, and through the growing ache in my arms. Suddenly the tip of my pole jerked violently. Holding on tight, I followed Grandpa’s fishing tip: rod tip up, line tight. The trout ran deep, then burst to the surface, flapping his tail and shaking his head wildly. After a long, fierce battle, I finally reeled him into the shallows — silver, enormous, and beautiful beyond words. I had caught Walter!
Para. 2
When I lifted him from the water, he seemed to stare at me with a sad, wet eye. Somehow, my thrill ebbed. The playful Walter who had winked at me the day before was at my mercy, his silver scales dimming in my hands. Something tightened in my throat. Then Grandpa’s words came back to me: some fish are meant to stay in the river. I knelt down, eased the hook from his lip, and set him back into the river. But just before he swam off, I thought I saw the corner of his mouth lift in a great wide smile. I stood there empty-handed, but somehow my chest felt full. Maybe, I thought, that made me a better fisherman than any newspaper picture ever could.

________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】
Saturday morning arrived and the yard was alive with people. Neighbors came one after another, browsing the neatly arranged old items carefully. Doreen helped Mr. Bower introduce each item warmly, telling simple stories behind those old objects. Touched by the precious memories, most visitors were willing to take the items home. Much practical furniture and various tools were sold out quickly. Some neighbors even volunteered to help carry the goods, making the sale go smoothly. The warm atmosphere filled the whole yard and melted the old man’s initial worry.
By mid-afternoon, Mr. Bower was amazed to find his garage tidy. Most useless clutter was cleared away, leaving spacious and clean space for him. He felt relieved and grateful, thanking Doreen repeatedly for her thoughtful help. Doreen smiled and told him that letting go of useless things could bring a more comfortable life. From then on, Mr. Bower enjoyed his tidy garage and got along even better with warm-hearted neighbors. He finally realized that proper tidying would not erase his memories but brought him a brand-new life.

20 浙江杭州第二中学2027届高三年级9月开学适应性检测英语试题

Paragraph2: We spread our printed-out calendars over the desk, with those magic-filled pictures.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
【答案】One possible version:
As Paul’s health slowly worsened, our AI creation became our closest bond. Stricken by ALS, his muscles grew increasingly stiff, making even the simplest typing an exhausting task. Nevertheless, he never abandoned this warm pastime that bonded us. Every afternoon, propped up on his bed, he would hold his breath and type prompts bit by bit, patiently awaiting the images generated by AI. Evan and I kept him company all the time, bouncing off weird and creative ideas and sharing hilarious comments on every unique artwork. These precious moments effectively dispelled the gloom brought by his disease.
We spread our printed-out calendars over the desk, with those magic-filled pictures. The instant Paul caught sight of them, his pale face lit up with a gentle and heartfelt smile. Weak as he was, he still teased about our strange yet adorable creations, filling the room with laughter. We flipped through the pages slowly, recalling every blissful moment we had spent together. Cold and mechanical as AI technology is, it served as a warm link connecting our hearts and brightening Paul’ s tough days. Beyond doubt, this calendar is not merely a collection of AI artworks, but an eternal treasure witnessing our priceless and unshakable friendship.
