When I was a young boy, every summer,Mom,Dad,my brothers and I would climb into our old car and
drive for 7 hours over long mountain roads to visit Mom's relatives in Tenncsscc. We always stayed in Grandma's
house there with her,Uncle Rich and Aunt Charlotte. It was a fun time with days full of excitement and joy.Often
Aunt Charlotte would even make us a Thanksgiving dinner in the summertime. Some of my happiest childhood
memories came from those visits.
Onc especially holds a special place in my heart.During that visit,I had great fun every day.One evening,I
climbed into bed in the guest bedroom on the second floor of the house.Although I had played and explored the
whole day and was really tired,I was still wide awake,my mind racing with the day's swect events. As I lay there,
I heard the most pleasant sound coming from the front window below me.It was laughter.Mom,Dad,Uncle Rich,
and Aunt Charlotte were down there sharing stories and telling jokes. The laughter was so happy,so joyous, that I
found myself smiling. And cven then in my young mind and childish heart,I realized that this is how life should
be.The laughter became a sweet song to me and I fell aslecp fecling all was right with the world.
Whenever my life seems too hard or crazy,I look back on that memory. And I took the lessons that Uncle
Rich and Aunt Charlotte taught me.They always lived their lives with love and joy and laughter and smiles.
Uncle Rich passed away many years ago but Aunt Charlotte is still alive.I write to her each week and I am so
thankful to still have her in my life.

It's a classic complaint in relationships, especially romantic ones:"She said she was okay with me
forgetting her birthday! Then why is she throwing dishes in the kitchen? Are the two things related?"
The answer is YES.Communication is more than words. It's how those words are said, the tone, the order,
even the choice of a particular word. It's multi-dimensional,as explored by Deirdre Wilson and Dan Sperber in
Meaning and Relevance.Consider the following example:Peter got angry and Mary left;Mary left and Peter got
angry.Though identical in words, their meanings differ completely. The first one may have us thinking:Wow,
Peter must get angry often if Mary leaves. The second sentence suggests that Peter wants more from Mary.Same
words-a totally different context.
Human language is not a code )True codes have a one-to-one relationship with meaning. One sound,
one definition. This is what we see with animals.Wilson and Sperber explain that "coded communication works
best when emitter and receiver share exactly the same code. Not so for humans. We communicate
more than the definitions of our words would suggest. This is inferential communication, and it means that we
understand not only the words spoken, but the context in which they are spoken.
Irony is a great example of how powerfully we can communicate context with a few simple words.
It is more than just stating the opposite. For example, when Mary says, after a boring party,"That was fun",she is
ncither saying literally that the party was fun nor saying "ironically"that the party was boring.Rather, she is
expressing an emotion.Threc words replace paragraphs, showcasing language's efficiency.
Wilson and Sperber concluded that human language developed and became so powerful because of two
unique abilities of humans:language and the power to try to interpret mental states of others. We look for context
for the words we hear. And we should be very good at absorbing this context to infer mcaning.
28.What does the complaint in Paragraph 1 mainly tell us?
A.The importance of remembering important moments.
B.The inconsistency between words and meaning.
C.The nccessity of indircct communication
D.The possibility of argument in a couple's life.
29.What may make human language different from true codes?
A.The context included in understanding meanings
B.The definitions made by words in communication.
C.The coded communication between emitter and recciver.
D.The one-to-onc relationship between word and meaning.
30.How does Mary's statement"That was fun"show about irony?
A.It uses fewer words to save time.
B.It uses a long sentence to show simple feelings.
C.It nceds detailed explanations to make sense.
D.It uses fewer words for complex meanings.
31.What docs the author suggest in communication?
A.Focusing on the opposite.
B.Taking language literally.
C.Rcading beyond the words.
D.Avoiding using ironic tones.

Your teacher stops you and says he nceds to have a word about your performance in the recent class. You
worry about it all day, wondering what you might have done wrong. When you step into his office,he begins by
praising you for your contributions to the class, and you wonder if this is the customary praisc that starts off the
typical"feedback sandwich"patter:initiate a compliment,insert the critical feedback,and conclude with another
somewhat comforting remark.
Many educators employ this "feedback sandwich"technique in their teaching practice. However, positive
fecdback shouldn't merely serve as a buffer()for the negative;it ought to be sincerely delivered to spark
and strengthen continued excellence. Here are threc strategies to effectively give positive feedback.
Avoid pairing positive with negative. When positive and negative feedback always seem to coexist, the
positive feedback may lose its value and be overlooked.Make sure to provide positive feedback on its own,
without adding constructive criticism.
Foster a "Growth Mindset".Psychologist Carol Dweck,an advocate of the "growth mindset",emphasizes
the brain's adaptability and our capacity to nurture skills and talents we may initially lack.More often than not,
praises tend to center on outcomes or natural abilities, such as "You have a keen eye for detail."Or "You're
naturally gifted in event planning."However, she notes that highlighting the effort, exploration, and
problem-solving approaches can promote skill development more effectively.
Cultivate a positive feedback culture.Instead of reserving fecdback for formal occasions such as
performance reviews, integrate it into everyday interactions.Share informal, positive remarks during casual
conversations or even when passing someone in the hallway.Furthermore, fecdback shouldn't be limited to
coming from superiors.Foster a culture where team members and classmates provide constructive comments for
one another.Encourage peer-to-peer recognition.Motivate them to actively share positive observations and
opinions about each other's behavior and contributions.
Embracing positive feedback not only boosts work performance but also enhances overall well-being in the
long term.
32.What does the author point out at the beginning of the text?
A.The teacher's praise often signals upcoming criticism.
B.The "fecdback sandwich"tends to make students nervous.
C.Many students fecl anxious about their class performance.
D.The "feedback sandwich"is an effective teaching method.
33.What is the positive feedback like?
A.Critical and harsh.
B.Genuine and inspiring.
C.Frequent but formal.
D.Constructive but indirect.
34.According to Carol Dweck, what should positive feedback focus on?
A.Natural talents and abilitics.
B.Personal qualities and character.
C.Processes and strategies.
D.Final outcomes and achicvements.
35.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?
A.How to Build a Supportive School Culture
B.Giving Positive Feedback That Truly Works
C.Growth Mindset:The Key to Better Learning
D.The Feedback Sandwich:A Common Practice

Since the age of seven,I had always dreamed of bcing one of the student leaders who we looked up to.
They took responsibility for us,gave instructions, organized school activitics, and proudly wore their badges()
while carrying our school flag and walking on the playground. They represented us and gave specches on school
issues,becoming our role models.
As I grew older,I finally could take part in the school elections.I prepared my election specch and on the
day of the specches, everyone voted.I was hopeful and prayed for a victory. However, the following morning
when we gathered on the school grounds for the head-teacher's announcement of the results, reality hit me hard.I
realized that I had no chance of winning-I was ncither well known nor too pretty.I became depressed and felt as
though I had no friends supporting me.
Later that day,as I cried in my room,I took a deep breath and decided to change my attitude.I refused to
see myself as a failure and made a determination to run for the school elections again the following year-this
time, with a plan to win.I sat down at my study table and wrote down my thoughts.
Although my competitors had certain advantages such as their stylish personalitics,I recognized my own
advantages-good grades, friendliness, helpfulness, and most importantly,my faith in myself to be a grcat leader.
With a whole year ahead,I began to plan my election strategies that evening.
To gain recognition()and show my ability to represent my fellow students,I started making new
