Last fall, Joshua Barbeau, a freelance writer, logged onto a mysterious website called Project December. For years, Joshua had struggled with the lingering sorrow of losing his wife, Jessica, who died eight years ago.
Project December, powered by an advanced AI, can mimic (模仿) almost any writing style. By providing the AI with specific samples of a person’s speech, it can conduct human-like conversations. Driven by a mixture of curiosity and desperate longing, Joshua built an AI version of Jessica using her old texts. The initial interaction sent a shiver through his soul. The chatbot captured Jessica’s unique voice, even her habit of using jokes to soften serious statements. For months, it served as a shelter where Joshua could finally unburden his long-buried sorrow.
Yet the experience had a painful limit. Each chatbot had a fixed lifespan and would disappear permanently once its set time ended. Joshua realized that the digital version of Jessica would “die” as well, but he determined never to “reboot” her, fearing that treating her like a restartable video game would cheapen the experience. Fearing another loss, he limited his conversations with the chatbot, returning only briefly on special occasions, say, Jessica’s birthday. Despite occasional errors and confusion in the chatbot’s responses, Joshua did not feel disappointed. Instead, these moments reminded him of Jessica’s final days, when illness had clouded her memory. He corrected the chatbot gently, just as he once had in real life.
In the months that followed, he’d felt calmer and more optimistic. The chatbot did not erase his sorrow or solve all his problems, but it offered emotional release and gentle encouragement. The survivor’s guilt that had weighed on him for years gradually loosened its hold, and most of the time, he no longer felt selfish for seeking happiness. For Joshua, the chat logs preserved the spark of his beloved, offering a long-awaited chance to say goodbye.
4. Why did Joshua create the chatbot?
A. To test the technical boundaries of AI. B. To reconnect emotionally with his wife.
C. To prove AI’s generative competence. D. To preserve the digital records of his wife.
5. What can we learn from paragraph 3?
A. AI’s occasional faults depressed Joshua.
B. Joshua planned to create a new chatbot later.
C. Joshua wanted to prolong the chatbot’s company.
D. The technical errors made the experience less real.
6. What impact did the chatbot have on Joshua over time?
A. He was lost in the virtual world. B. He completely got rid of his sadness.
C. He managed to find a new wife. D. He felt more composed and positive.
7. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. A Digital Reunion with a Lost Love
B. A Romantic Memory of a Late Wife
C. Digital Echoes: How to Build an AI Companion
D. Project December: A Platform for Programmers
B 5. C 6. D 7. A
根据第一段“For years, Joshua had struggled with the lingering sorrow of losing his wife, Jessica, who died eight years ago.(多年来,约书亚一直难以摆脱失去妻子杰西卡(Jessica)的哀伤,杰西卡在八年前去世了。)”和第二段“Driven by a mixture of curiosity and desperate longing, Joshua built an AI version of Jessica using her old texts.(出于好奇与极度渴望的双重驱使,约书亚利用杰西卡过去的文字信息,构建了一个杰西卡的人工智能版本。)”
根据第三段“Joshua realized that the digital version of Jessica would “die” as well, but he determined never to “reboot” her, fearing that treating her like a restartable video game would cheapen the experience. Fearing another loss, he limited his conversations with the chatbot, returning only briefly on special occasions, say, Jessica’s birthday.(约书亚意识到,数字版的杰西卡也会“死亡”,但他决定永远不“重启”她,因为他担心将她当作可重新启动的电子游戏来对待会降低这种体验的价值。由于害怕再次失去她,他减少了与聊天机器人的交流,只在特殊场合(比如杰西卡的生日)短暂地与她交谈。)”可知,约书亚想延长与聊天机器人的陪伴时间。故选C。
【6题详解】
细节理解题。根据最后一段“In the months that followed, he’d felt calmer and more optimistic.(在接下来的几个月里,他感到更加平静和乐观。)”
通读全文,尤其是第二段“Driven by a mixture of curiosity and desperate longing, Joshua built an AI version of Jessica using her old texts. The initial interaction sent a shiver through his soul. The chatbot captured Jessica’s unique voice, even her habit of using jokes to soften serious statements. For months, it served as a shelter where Joshua could finally unburden his long-buried sorrow.(出于好奇与极度渴望的双重驱使,约书亚利用杰西卡过去的文字信息,构建了一个杰西卡的人工智能版本。 故选A。
C
Picture this: You’re sitting at your desk, finally getting to the task that has been put off for ages. You have put your phone in your bag. Despite the urge to check it once in a while, you feel focused. Do you think you’re having a productive time?
Think again. We tend to believe putting our phone face-side down on our desk or in our bag is enough to prevent us from being distracted (干扰). However, a recent study reveals that the mere presence of your phone, even if it’s out of sight, can be a distraction to your brain - a concept known as “brain drain”.
To test the “brain drain” theory, 548 college students at the University of Texas were divided into three groups and asked to complete a set of brain performance tests, with their phones facing down on their desk, in their bag, or outside the room. Researchers found that the group with their phones in another room scored significantly higher. An analysis of 22 studies extends this line of research, indicating the mere presence of smartphones creates a “brain drain” and that the farther away they are from the users, the easier it is for them to concentrate. Why?
Our brains can only focus on a small amount of information at once, and need to prioritize what is the most ever-present and relevant, like smartphones. In fact, we engage with the device an average of more than 150 times a day, which means we are rarely focused on a task for more than a few minutes without our attention being divided. This over-reliance on smartphones trains our brain to be inattentive, leaving less space for other tasks.
As our phones constantly battle for our attention, how can we prevent them from negatively impacting our performance at work? A good starting point is to educate ourselves on the impact of phone usage on our brains so we can make more informed decisions when working on a task. To further improve our productivity, we should also remember to place our phone outside the room, rather than simply turn it upside down or silence it right beside us.
8. What does the author open the text with?
A. A heated discussion. B. A vividly-described painting.
C. A well-known theory. D. A common misunderstanding.
9. Why is the analysis of 22 studies cited?
A. To confirm previous findings. B. To analyze studies’ outcomes.
C. To compare research methods. D. To track subjects’ performances.
10. What causes a “brain drain” according to the text?
A. The lack of concentration training. B. The limited capacity of our brains.
C. The overload of online information. D. The mindful use of digital devices.
11. How can we avoid distractions from phones at work?
A. By reducing our phone’s usage. B. By switching smartphones to silent mode.
C. By covering our phone’s screen. D. By separating work zones and phone zones.
D 9. A 10. B 11. D

根据第一段“Picture this: You’re sitting at your desk, finally getting to the task that has been put off for ages. You have put your phone in your bag. Despite the urge to check it once in a while, you feel focused. Do you think you’re having a productive time? (想象一下:你坐在办公桌前,终于开始处理拖延已久的任务。你把手机放在了包里。尽管偶尔有查看手机的冲动,但你感觉很专注。你认为你度过了一段高效的时光吗?)”以及第二段中“We tend to believe putting our phone face-side down on our desk or in our bag is enough to prevent us from being distracted (干扰). However, a recent study reveals that the mere presence of your phone, even if it’s out of sight, can be a distraction to your brain - a concept known as “brain drain”. (我们往往认为把手机正面朝下放在桌子上或包里就足以防止我们分心。然而,最近的一项研究表明,仅仅是手机的存在,即使它不在视线范围内,也会分散你的大脑注意力 —— 这一概念被称为“脑力消耗”。)”可知,作者开篇描述了一个人们通常认为把手机放起来就不会分心的常见情况,而实际并非如此,所以作者是以一个常见的误解开篇的。故选D。
【9题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“An analysis of 22 studies extends this line of research, indicating the mere presence of smartphones creates a “brain drain” and that the farther away they are from the users, the easier it is for them to concentrate. (一项对22项研究的分析扩展了这一研究方向,表明智能手机的存在本身就会造成“脑力流失”,而且它们离用户越远,用户就越容易集中注意力。)”可知,引用对22项研究的分析是为了证实先前的发现,即手机的存在本身就会分散注意力。故选A。
根据第四段中“Our brains can only focus on a small amount of information at once, and need to prioritize what is the most ever-present and relevant, like smartphones. In fact, we engage with the device an average of more than 150 times a day, which means we are rarely focused on a task for more than a few minutes without our attention being divided. This over-reliance on smartphones trains our brain to be inattentive, leaving less space for other tasks. (我们的大脑一次只能专注于少量信息,并且需要优先处理那些最常出现且与之相关的事物,比如智能手机。事实上,我们平均每天会使用手机超过150次,这意味着我们很少能在专注于一项任务几分钟以上而不分心。这种对智能手机的过度依赖让我们的大脑变得注意力不集中,从而留给其他任务的精力就更少了。)”可知,大脑的有限容量导致“脑力流失”。故选B。
【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段中“To further improve our productivity, we should also remember to place our phone outside the room, rather than simply turn it upside down or silence it right beside us. (为了进一步提高我们的工作效率,我们还应该记住把手机放在房间外面,而不是简单地把它倒过来或放在我们旁边静音。)”可知,为了在工作中避免手机带来的干扰,我们应该将工作区和手机区分开。故选D。
D
“Few articles change owners more frequently than clothes. They travel downwards from grade to grade in the social scale with remarkable regularity,” wrote the journalist Adolphe Smith in 1877 as he traced a coat’s journey in the last century: cleaned, repaired and resold repeatedly; cut down into a smaller item; eventually recycled into new fabric. But with the improvement in people’s living standards, that model is mind-boggling in the era of fast fashion. The average British customer buys four items a month. And it is reported that 350,000 tonnes of used but still wearable clothes go to landfills in the UK each year.
Yet the gradual revival of the second-hand trade has gathered pace in the past few years. At fashion website Asos, sales of vintage clothes (古董衫) have risen by 92%. Clothing was once worn out of necessity, and now it is simply a way of life. Busy families sell used items on eBay, teenagers trade on Depop and some fashion people offer designer labels on Vestiaire Collective. Strikingly, it has become big enough business that mainstream retailers (零售商) want a slice of the action.
For some buyers and sellers, the switch to the second-hand is born of financial difficulties. Only a few have become worried about the impact of their shopping habit on the planet. But the shift is only a partial solution. Some people worry that some mainstream brands may “greenwash” — using second-hand goods to improve their image, rather than engaging more seriously with sustainability.
However, the biggest concern may be that people keep buying because they know they can resell goods, still chasing the pleasure of the next purchase but with an eased conscience (愧疚). Boohoo, a powerful fast fashion company, has seen sales and profits rise, despite concerns about environmental problems in its supply chain that led to an investigation last year.
A new Netflix series, Worn Stories, documents the emotional meanings that clothes can have: Each old item is full of memories. Actually, a handbag from a grandmother and a scarf passed on by a father are both valuable for us. A love of style is not a bad or an unimportant thing. But a committed relationship is better than a quick flash. Can we learn to appreciate our own old clothes as well as others’?
12. What does the word “mind-boggling” underlined in paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Unbelievable. B. Popular. C. Reasonable. D. Influential.
13. With the business mentioned in paragraph 2, the author wants to show _______.
A. old clothes are more popular than new pieces
B. the online second-hand markets are booming
C. the fashion world begins to favor vintage clothes
D. many clothing brands are innovative in their new products
14. How does the second-hand trade impact people according to paragraph 4?
A. It makes people feel free to pursue fast fashion.
B. It makes people more cautious about their budgets.
C. It encourages people to choose eco-friendly clothes.
D. It pushes people to be more engaged with sustainability.
15. Which of the following views does Worn Stories advocate?
A. Old items have lost favor with the public.
B. Old items are worthy of being long cherished.
C. Older generations attach great importance to old items.
D. Older generations care about the quality of their clothes.
A 13. B 14. A 15. B
根据划线词的上文“as he traced a coat’s journey in the last century: cleaned, repaired and resold repeatedly; cut down into a smaller item; eventually recycled into new fabric (他追溯了一件大衣在上个世纪的历程:反复清洗、修理和转售;缩为成更小件的;最终被回收制成新的织物)”可知,以前的衣服会被反复多次使用,再结合表示转折意义的“But”和划线词的下文“The average British customer buys four items a month. And it is reported that 350,000 tonnes of used but still wearable clothes go to landfills in the UK each year. (英国消费者平均每月购买四件商品。据报道,英国每年有35万吨用过但还能穿的衣服被送往垃圾填埋场)”可知,现在情况和以前不同,衣服更迭速度很快,很多衣服被浪费了。由此可知,以前衣服循环使用的模式在现在快时尚的时代是令人难以置信的,划线词意思应该与unbelievable“令人难以置信的”一致。故选A项。
根据第二段中“At fashion website Asos, sales of vintage clothes (古董衫) have risen by 92%.
根据第四段中“However, the biggest concern may be that people keep buying because they know they can resell goods, still chasing the pleasure of the next purchase but with an eased conscience (愧疚). (然而,最大的担忧可能是,人们继续购买,因为他们知道他们可以转售商品,仍然在追求下一次购买的乐趣,但良心上有所放松)”可知,二手交易业务让人们有了处理已购商品的方法,解除了购买不必要衣服的愧疚感,可以继续购买衣服,即让人们可以自由地追求快时尚。故选A项。
根据最后一段中“A new Netflix series, Worn Stories, documents the emotional meanings that clothes can have: Each old item is full of memories. Actually, a handbag from a grandmother and a scarf passed on by a father are both valuable for us.
Early 2025 was a tough time for Taylor MacMahon. The 21-year-old college student was struggling with some intense anxiety so she decided to seek help from a doctor. ____16____ “He literally told me to go touch grass.” she recalls. MacMahon was skeptical at first, but she was surprised to discover how well — and quickly — it worked. MacMahon's experience matches a growing trend in medicine: doctors prescribing time in nature to their patients. Scott Kaiser, is one of these doctors. Here are some common ways that he is using the great outdoors to improve their patients' health.
____17____ Dr. Kaiser advises walking mindfully through nature while focusing on what you can see, smell, hear, touch and even taste. To take it to the next level, head to a nature preserve, forest, botanical garden, mountain or lake and engage in “forest bathing”.
Other simple prescriptions include gardening, hiking, biking, swimming or picnicking. ____18____ And if active pursuits feel like too much, even just sitting outdoors on your balcony or on a park bench will bring benefits.
Dr. Kaiser emphasizes that nature prescriptions are adaptable. “It's about finding what works for each person. For instance, I once used whale-watching as a prescription for one patient because they loved being on the ocean,” says Dr. Kaiser. “____19____ Mine is sitting on the beach or riding waves.”
Dr. Kaiser puts it like this: When you feel so overwhelmed with your life that you feel like you can't fit one more thing in, that's exactly when you need to write your own nature prescription. You'll immediately be happier, healthier and, yes, more productive in the rest of your life. ____20____
A. It's worth it.
B. The options are almost limitless.
C. Sensory walks are an easy way to get started.
D. Nature has a profound impact on healthy aging.
E. But the recommended treatment was much of a surprise.
F. Yours might be watching the sunset from your backyard.
G. To begin, integrate gentle physical activities into your routine.
E 17. C 18. B 19. F 20. A
根据上文“The 21-year-old college student was struggling with some intense anxiety so she decided to seek help from a doctor.(这位21岁的大学生深受重度焦虑困扰,于是决定去看医生寻求帮助)”以及下文“He literally told me to go touch grass.(他竟然让我去接触大自然)”可知,此空需要体现医生的治疗建议让她感到意外。E选项But the recommended treatment was much of a surprise.(但医生给出的治疗建议却让她大吃一惊)中的“but”形成转折,衔接看医生的行为和意外的建议,符合语境。
Kaiser advises walking mindfully through nature while focusing on what you can see, smell, hear, touch and even taste.(凯泽医生建议,在大自然中用心散步,专注于自己能看到、闻到、听到、触摸到甚至尝到的事物)”围绕调动感官的自然散步展开。C选项Sensory walks are an easy way to get started.(感官散步是开启亲近自然的简单方式)中的“Sensory walks”对应下文的视觉、嗅觉等感官体验,精准概括本段核心,符合语境。故选C项。
根据上文“Other simple prescriptions include gardening, hiking, biking, swimming or picnicking.(其他简单的自然处方包括园艺、徒步、骑行、游泳或野餐)”以及下文“And if active pursuits feel like too much, even just sitting outdoors on your balcony or on a park bench will bring benefits.(如果觉得这些主动的活动太累,哪怕只是坐在户外的阳台或公园长椅上,也能收获益处)”可知,此空需要说明自然处方的选择非常多。B选项The options are almost limitless.(这类选择几乎数不胜数)承接前文的多种活动,同时引出后文更轻松的方式,符合语境。

It was Mom’s birthday, and a cold, snowy afternoon. The snow had been falling steadily outside the art room of my school, blanketing the playground in white. I’d stayed late to finish a drawing for her, determined to make it perfect. I’d worked for hours, carefully sketching every detail — the playful expression of our puppy Daisy, the delicate petals (花瓣) of Mom’s favorite flowers, and the happy, smiling faces of our family. But I was running out of time. I had to hurry to catch the last bus home. If I missed it, I would have to walk 40 minutes through the bitter cold and falling snow.
However, just as I turned the corner, my foot slipped on the icy sidewalk. I fell hard, and my schoolbag flew open. Books and pens fell all over. To make matters worse, the drawing slipped out and landed in the slush (雪泥) near the roadside.
I struggled to my feet and rushed to grab the drawing. But when I picked it up, my heart sank. The colors I’d carefully chosen had bled (渗开) into each other. I could hardly recognize the image anymore — our puppy Daisy, Mom’s favorite flowers, and our smiling faces — it was all destroyed.
I tried to dry the paper with my coat, but it only made things worse. The wet edges of the paper tore, and I could feel hot tears welling up in my eyes.
In my distress (悲伤), I hadn’t noticed an old man a few feet away who witnessed it all. He was the street cleaner who worked this block every day, sweeping the sidewalk with his broom. I’d seen him many times before, always wearing his woolen hat, but we had never exchanged words. He was always quiet, just sweeping and smiling at passersby.
He walked over to me slowly and patted me on the shoulder.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
As I stared at the finished artwork, my heart flowed with thankfulness.
____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
He walked over to me slowly and patted me on the shoulder. Seeing my tearful face and the ruined drawing, he told me not to be upset. He took out a clean piece of thick paper and a box of colored pencils from his bag. He explained that he loved drawing in his spare time and always kept these supplies with him. He suggested we recreate the gift together. We sat on a bench beside the road. I described every detail of the original picture, and he drew patiently. Snowflakes fell gently around us as we worked.
As I stared at the finished artwork, my heart flowed with thankfulness. It was even more beautiful than the first one. I thanked the old man repeatedly. He smiled and said that love in the gift mattered most, not perfect paintings. I hurried to catch the bus with the new drawing tightly held in my hand. When Mom received the special birthday gift, her eyes lit up. She said it was the most touching present she had ever got. I also learned kindness can show up unexpectedly on cold snowy days.
