My teacher was one of the people I most wanted to see whenever I visited New York City. Usually I’d call her as soon as I was settled, and it was thrilling to hear her voice and then to arrange a meeting time. But in 2024, when I turned 75 and she was 96, I put off making the call. Each time I thought about phoning her, I feared that when I said my name, she would say, “Who?”
I first met Lore Segal in 1975, when I took her writing class at Columbia University. Back then, all I knew about her was that she’d recently lost her husband. I hadn’t known that when she was a little girl, her family went through a series of ups and downs and that at 10 years old, she was even transported alone all the way to England, where she drifted between different temporary homes.
Small and self-confident, Lore had a pale face and curly hair. She was particular, her whole manner changing when someone expressed something pompous (言辞浮夸的) or emotional. She said firmly that no one ever again needed to describe someone drinking coffee or getting into and out of a car. She also stated that for a reader to remember a particular detail, you had to write it one and a half times, a rule both impossible to follow and true. When she leaned toward a text, I saw the obvious pleasure she took in sharing a passage and felt the pleasure welling up in me.
Lore held student conferences at her apartment near school. When it was my turn, we sat beside each other and she went page by page through my novel-in-progress manuscript. No one had ever before read my work so closely or seen anything special in me. And now came this extraordinary moment: my teacher was reading my words and laughing.
24. Why did the author delay calling Lore in 2024?
A. Lore refused to meet him. B. He was fully occupied with work.
C. He lost interest in meeting her. D. He worried she might forget him.
25. What do we know about Lore’s childhood?
A. She travelled a lot alone. B. She weathered bitter blows.
C. She lived in a fixed house. D. She taught writing in England.
26. What can we infer about Lore’s attitude towards writing?
A. She thought short articles work best. B. She hated all daily scene descriptions.
C. She ignored students’ writing faults. D. She prized plain and meaningful writing.
27. How did the author feel during one-on-one talks?
A. Inspired and valued. B. Shy and awkward.
C. Calm and indifferent. D. Nervous and uneasy.
C
It is well known that art can lift our spirits. But can it also calm our bodies? A recent study by King’s College London suggests yes.
Researchers asked volunteers to look at masterworks by 19th-century artists like Van Gogh, Manet and Gauguin. Half of the group viewed the original paintings in a gallery; the other half viewed high-quality copies in a lab. The results showed that those who saw the originals had lower stress and fewer health problems. Visiting art galleries can also reduce the risk of heart disease and improve the immune system.
Other studies support these findings. Psychologists from the University of Cambridge conducted a similar project and found that appreciating artistic beauty helps people escape the “mental traps of daily life”. The UK’s Department for Culture, Media and Sport estimated that taking part in creative activities improves physical and mental health, and also brings economic benefits. Nature Magazine has suggested that art can play a role in public health, especially in preventing chronic diseases.
Why does art have such power? Art historian Katy Hessel writes, “When you experience an artwork, you don’t just see it, but you feel it. The best thing we can do is take time with it.” In today’s fast-paced world, time is exactly what we lack. Galleries offer quiet, thoughtful spaces where we stop scrolling on our phones and start really looking. Deeply engaging with art creates “psychological distancing”, which helps us see the bigger picture. As writer Iris Murdoch put it, “Great art is liberating; it enables us to see and take pleasure in what is not ourselves.”
In an age when creativity is being outsourced to AI, galleries bring us face to face with human genius. Some experts believe that doctors might one day prescribe (开处方) visits to a local gallery or museum, just as they advise exercise and healthy eating. With falling visitor numbers and funding crises, these studies provide a strong reason for greater investment in the arts. Art is important not only to a nation’s economy, but to its health.
28. What did the King’s College London study find about viewing original artworks?
A. It helps people finish work faster.
B. It weakens people’s immune system.
C. It increases people’s interest in painting.
D. It reduces stress and improves physical health.
29. The phrase “psychological distancing” in paragraph 4 most likely means ______.
A. Losing interest in the artwork.
B. Developing a fear of galleries.
C. Feeling separated from daily worries.
D. Keeping a safe distance from paintings.
30. What can be inferred from the last paragraph?
A. AI has replaced humans in artistic creativity.
B. People may receive art treatment in the future.
C. Art galleries are losing their appeal to the public.
D. Art’s economic value matters more than health value.
31. What can be a suitable title for the text?
A. The Healing Power of Original Art.
B. The Future of Art in the Age of AI.
C. The Economic Importance of Museums.
D. The Mental Traps of People’s Daily Life.

Regular renting has become a modern ritual (习惯) for Lin Rong, a young professional in Shenzhen. Every couple of weeks, with a few taps on his smartphone, he has a DJI drone delivered to his door. The arrangement is made after a careful cost comparison between purchasing and renting the equipment. He has been burdened by a “permanent” commitment before: an action camera he once bought now sits at home, an expensive reminder of a hobby that lasted exactly two outings. Possession, he has concluded, is a burden.
Lin is not alone. In late January, newspaper China Youth Daily surveyed about 1,300 young people. More than three quarters said they now prefer flexibility over permanent ownership. Digital devices and outdoor gear (装备) were the most rented items, accounting for 42.5 percent and 38.9 percent of rentals respectively. Zhu Di, a researcher at the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, views this as a calculated departure from the traditional obsession with owning. “It is a more mature lifestyle,” said Zhu, “This generation is not just saving money; they are rewriting the rules of the marketplace to fit a life that refuses to be weighed down.”
This shift from owning to renting has been fueled by the rise of specialized online platforms and a nationwide credit system, which lowered the entry barrier for renters. Meanwhile, a growing number of businesses have shifted their focus from selling to renting, and the variety of rentable items is exploding. The impact was immediate. Suddenly, students could rent professional cameras for graduation photos, travelers could pick up outdoor gear without paying much deposits (押金), and tech enthusiasts could try out the latest digital devices at minimal risk.
The emergence of rental platforms is not without its anxieties: unclear rental agreements, unfair compensation conflicts and poor after-sales service. Despite these growing pains, the underlying shift feels permanent. Renting goes beyond merely saving money; it’s about living lighter — having the freedom to try new things without being tied down by possessions.
32. Why is an action camera mentioned in Paragraph 1?
A. To advocate Lin’s modern way of life.
B. To show Lin’s passion for photography.
C. To justify Lin’s choice of renting a drone.
D. To demonstrate Lin’s devotion to his hobby.
33. What can be inferred from Zhu Di’s remarks about the new generation?
A. They attach value to ownership. B. They reject expensive products.
C. They change the market for profit. D. They adopt a flexible life attitude.
34. Which factor contributes to a wider range of renters?
A. Lower prices of certain goods. B. Easier access to rentable items.
C. Higher requirements for renters. D. Bigger change in credit systems.
35. What is the author’s attitude towards renting?
A. Positive. B. Cautious. C. Objective. D. Disapproving.

My journey with skateboarding began in 1975, and I was immediately hooked (吸引). For my 11th birthday, my father bought me my first board. It had cheap clay wheels that shook, bumped and made much noise. ____36____ This early experience taught me that passion isn’t about having the best equipment, but about the feeling it gives you.
Soon enough, I found myself reading every issue of Skateboarder, a popular magazine back then, and our neighborhood was full of kids skating together. ____37____ The sense of shared freedom was transformative, especially for someone who never stood out at traditional team sports.
____38____ At one point, a friend who was a student at York, north of the city, suggested we try the tunnels at the university. Yet, we found them closed, which only pushed me to explore other places — empty parking lots, quiet office parks, and smooth pathways. The joy I got from these experiences never left me.
As I grew older, my relationship with skateboarding matured. I created a website called SkateGeezer dedicated to skaters who had ridden in the 1960s, 70s and 80s. ____39____ From there, I eventually built a career in publishing at skateboarding magazines.
Now, with a family of my own, that passion rides on. I introduced all my children to skateboarding almost as soon as they could walk. The full-circle moment of seeing my sons surpass my own ability is a pride unlike any other. I know some journeys, when you stick with them, don’t end. ____40____
A. I realized I needed much better equipment.
B. They just find new, beautiful paths forward.
C. It inspired me to write a book, The Concrete Wave.
D. That was when I decided to quit and try other sports.
E. Yet, none of that mattered when I felt the freedom of the ride.
F. We built skating tracks and spent hours riding down driveways.
G. In 1983, my skateboard accompanied me to university in Toronto.

The afternoon sun baked the sports field. I stared at the sign-up paper for the 1.500 metres. The word “RESERVE” shone beside my name, written in careful pencil. Only five minutes were left. I took the pen, rubbed out the gray letters, and wrote ALLEN in bright blue ink. My heart beat louder, my hands shook, but I felt warm inside.
Coach lifted one eyebrow. “You sure, Allen? This race eats lazy legs.” I nodded, not trusting my voice. “The other runners stood tall beside me, all sharp calves(小腿肚) and bright shoes. Somewhere inside, a small door opened and doubt ran through, but I pushed it back and locked it tight with silent will: “You can do it.”
Training began at dawn. On day three my lungs burned like dry leaves. Halfway through the last run I bent over and threw up behind the low seats. Mark, the fastest senior, handed me water and laughed. “Enjoy the pain, rookie(新生).” I wetted my mouth, counted, the seconds I had lost, and whispered, “Three seconds faster tomorrow, that’s all I need today and always.” I stood up and ran again.
Numbers became my secret coach. Three seconds a day makes one minute in twenty days. I repeated the math while tying shoes, while eating lunch, while staring at the top of the room at night. The track turned silver under the moon; I ran round until the guard locked the door. Each footstep was a small promise to the future me waiting at the finish line of dreams. I smiled at the moon and kept going.
Race day finally arrived. Parents filled the front rows. I jogged to the line, shoes tapping lightly on the red road. The speaker called our names; when he said “Allen,” my friends shouted my nickname, “Ally-Alley-oop!” The gun sounded; we flew. Laps unfolded like pages in a book whose ending I had not yet written but now would complete. Hope grew with every step.

C 19. C 20. B
W: Good morning, everyone. Today I want to share how I used art to raise awareness about plastic pollution in our oceans. Plastic waste is a big problem, but many people don’t realize how much it affects marine life. I live near a beach, and every time I go there, I see plastic bottles and bags everywhere. So I started an art project called “Ocean Treasures”. I collected plastic waste from the beach, cleaned it, and turned it into sculptures of sea animals — like turtles, dolphins, and fish. Each sculpture has a tag that says how long it takes for that type of plastic to break down. I displayed the sculptures on the beach and in local malls. The project has made a difference: more people are now bringing reusable bags to the beach, and local shops have started selling reusable water bottles. Some schools even asked me to teach students how to make their own plastic sculptures to spread the word.

D 25. B 26. D 27. A
根据第一段“But in 2024, when I turned 75 and she was 96, I put off making the call. Each time I thought about phoning her, I feared that when I said my name, she would say, “Who?” (但在2024年,我75岁,她96岁时,我推迟了打电话。每次我想到要给她打电话,我就担心当我说出我的名字时,她会说:“谁?”)”可知,作者推迟打电话是因为他担心老师可能已经忘记了他。
【25题详解】
细节理解题。根据第二段“I hadn’t known that when she was a little girl, her family went through a series of ups and downs and that at 10 years old, she was even transported alone all the way to England, where she drifted between different temporary homes. (我当时不知道,当她还是个小女孩的时候,她的家庭经历了一系列的起伏,10岁时,她甚至独自一人被送到英国,在不同的临时住所之间漂泊。)”可知,Lore的童年经历了家庭变故和颠沛流离,即她经历了痛苦的打击。
【26题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段“She said firmly that no one ever again needed to describe someone drinking coffee or getting into and out of a car. She also stated that for a reader to remember a particular detail, you had to write it one and a half times, a rule both impossible to follow and true. (她坚定地说,再也不需要有人描述某人喝咖啡或上下车了。她还说,为了让读者记住一个特定的细节,你必须把它写上一遍半,这是一个既不可能遵循又正确的规则。)”可知,Lore反对浮夸空洞的描写,强调写作应精炼而有意义。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据最后一段“No one had ever before read my work so closely or seen anything special in me. And now came this extraordinary moment: my teacher was reading my words and laughing. (从来没有人如此仔细地读过我的作品,也没有人看出我有什么特别之处。现在,这个非凡的时刻到来了:我的老师读着我的文字,笑了起来。)”可知,一对一交流时作者感受到被重视,备受鼓舞。
D 29. C 30. B 31. A
根据第二段中的“The results showed that those who saw the originals had lower stress and fewer health problems. Visiting art galleries can also reduce the risk of heart disease and improve the immune system.(结果显示,那些观看原作的人压力更小,健康问题也更少。参观艺术画廊还能降低心脏病风险并改善免疫系统。)”可知,观看原作能够减轻压力并改善身体健康。
【29题详解】
词句猜测题。画线短语“psychological distancing”在第四段,根据第三段中的“appreciating artistic beauty helps people escape the “mental traps of daily life(欣赏艺术之美能帮助人们摆脱‘日常生活的精神桎梏’)”以及画线词后面的“which helps us see the bigger picture(这有助于我们把握全局)”可知,画线词指的是从日常烦恼中抽离出来,以更广阔的视角看待问题。
根据最后一段中的“Some experts believe that doctors might one day prescribe visits to a local gallery or museum, just as they advise exercise and healthy eating.(一些专家认为,未来医生或许会建议患者去当地美术馆或博物馆参观,就像他们如今劝导人们坚持运动、健康饮食一样。)”

根据文章第一段“Regular renting has become a modern ritual (习惯)for Lin Rong, a young professional in Shenzhen.
根据文章第二段中“More than three quarters said they now prefer flexibility over permanent ownership. (超过四分之三的受访者表示,和永久持有相比,他们现在更偏爱灵活性。)”及“‘It is a more mature lifestyle,’ said Zhu, ‘This generation is not just saving money; they are rewriting the rules of the marketplace to fit a life that refuses to be weighed down.’ (朱迪说:‘这是一种更成熟的生活方式,这一代人不只是省钱,他们还在改写市场规则,来适配这种拒绝被财物压垮的生活。’)”可推知,新一代年轻人接受了灵活的生活态度,拒绝被物品束缚。
【34题详解】
细节理解题。根据文章第三段中“This shift from owning to renting has been fueled by the rise of specialized online platforms and a nationwide credit system, which lowered the entry barrier for renters. Meanwhile, a growing number of businesses have shifted their focus from selling to renting, and the variety of rentable items is exploding. (专业线上平台和全国信用体系的崛起推动了从拥有到租赁的转变,它们降低了租赁者的准入门槛。与此同时,越来越多商家把经营重心从售卖转向租赁,可租赁物品的种类大幅增长。)”可知,更容易获取可租物品催生了更大规模的租赁群体。
【35题详解】
推理判断题。根据文章第四段“The emergence of rental platforms is not without its anxieties: unclear rental agreements, unfair compensation conflicts and poor after-sales service. Despite these growing pains, the underlying shift feels permanent. Renting goes beyond merely saving money; it’s about living lighter — having the freedom to try new things without being tied down by possessions. (租赁平台的兴起并非没有隐患:租赁协议不清晰、不公平的赔偿纠纷和售后体验差。尽管存在这些成长中的阵痛,但深层的转变似乎是永久的。租赁不只是省钱,它代表着更轻松的生活——拥有尝试新事物的自由,不被财物束缚。)”可推知,作者既指出了当前租赁行业存在的问题,也肯定了租赁生活方式的价值,整体态度是客观的。

上文“I know some journeys, when you stick with them, don’t end.(我知道有些旅程,只要你坚持下去,就不会结束)”说明作者认为热爱的旅程不会结束。

注意:1.续写词数应为150左右;

With three hundred metres left, my legs turned wooden. “Keep light,” Coach had said all week, so I let the words ride my breath. My eyes misted, but every step rang clear. “Alley-Alley-oop!” The call beat in time, sending blood I no longer noticed. I stopped counting seconds and started counting heartbeats — one for Mum, one for Mark, one for the shy boy who once wrote “reserve”. They lifted me; the white tape broke across my chest like a gift.
Seventy-one seconds faster than my life-best: the scoreboard said it all. I bent low, tasting iron and joy, and laughed till my ribs shook. Teammates crowded round; Coach whispered, “You raised your roof.” Mum waved, eyes bright as the tape. My legs trembled, yet inside a still flame stood. I learnt: the watch only notes what you leave; courage notes what you carry. When life later says, “You can’t,” I’ll answer with that loud cry and run on until “can’t” turns to “ I can”.
