My first year of high school is over and I have an enormous amount of free time. Over the school year, I have complained of being too busy. Now that I have that time, I don’t know how to use it. I miss going to school, doing group assignments and laughing with my friends. School filled me with purpose and a sense of achievement. I find that I, as well as my friends, feel sad about school coming to an end. I went on a journey to find out how to free myself from “Summer Blues”.
To get to the root of “Summer Blues,” I tried to visualize it through my inner eye, by painting it. I added different shades of blue and stormy clouds to express my thoughts through creativity. Art always helps me sort out my emotions and understand them. Plus, art is fun, and I can do it with any materials I have!
After finishing my first painting, my brain was awake, and my imagination was ticking. I knew that artists couldn’t just stay in their room, though. To discover a paintbrush’s potential, you need to take it out of its box. I then stepped into my yard. I noticed little things I had previously overlooked — the vines climbing up to reach for sunlight and the clouds shaped like bunnies and hippos. I initially didn’t notice the ant hill which I unfortunately stepped on. My sister and I burst out laughing and did a funny little dance to get the ants off our shoes. Connecting with nature allowed me to clear my head and stop worrying for a minute.
Now that I have taken action to care for myself, it is time to care for others as well. I started with something simple by donating clothes, books, and food. I also researched a cause I am passionate about — protecting the environment — and found ways to contribute. I found that using my time productively while doing good for others is another step in overcoming “Summer Blues”.
I went from feeling down to finding a new purpose in life; a purpose to find happiness for myself. I didn’t have to create happiness; I had to find it.
24. What does “Summer Blues” most probably refer to in the passage?
A. The anxiety about summer studies. B. The fear of spending summer alone.
C. The feeling of emptiness during summer. D. The dislike of outdoor summer activities.
25. The author believes that “artists couldn’t stay in their room” because ________.
A. painting outside brings people closer B. staying indoors is bad for their health
C. going outside opens up new possibilities D. painting indoors cannot express emotions
26. Which of the following would best describe the author’s personality?
A. Proactive and reflective. B. Sensitive and serious. C. Adventurous and sociable. D. Determined and ambitious.
27. What can we learn from this passage?
A. Nature is the only cure for sadness.
B. Happiness depends on school success.
C. Free time results in negative feelings.
D. Happiness comes from taking meaningful action.

根据文章第三段“To discover a paintbrush’s potential, you need to take it out of its box. Connecting with nature allowed me to clear my head and stop worrying for a minute.(要发掘画笔的潜力,你需要把它拿出盒子。
根据文章第一段中“I went on a journey to find out how to free myself from “Summer Blues”.(于是,我踏上了一段旅程,试图摆脱“夏日忧郁”)”,第二段中“To get to the root of “Summer Blues,” I tried to visualize it through my inner eye, by painting it. I started with something simple by donating clothes, books, and food. I also researched a cause I am passionate about — protecting the environment — and found ways to contribute.(现在我已经开始主动关心自己,接下来也该关心他人了。我从一些简单的事情做起,比如捐赠衣物、书籍和食物。我还研究了一个我非常热衷的公益事业——保护环境,并找到了为它贡献的方式)”提到作者后续主动走进自然、投身公益的行动,可推知作者是积极主动且善于反思的。
【27题详解】
推理判断题。根据第三段中“Connecting with nature allowed me to clear my head and stop worrying for a minute.(与自然的连接让我暂时平静下来,也停止了焦虑)”、第四段中“I found that using my time productively while doing good for others is another step in overcoming “Summer Blues”.(我发现,高效利用我的时间,同时做对他人有益的事,也是克服“夏日忧郁”的另一步)”和最后一段“I went from feeling down to finding a new purpose in life; a purpose to find happiness for myself. I didn’t have to create happiness; I had to find it.(我从感到低落,转变为找到了人生的新目标——为自己寻找幸福。我不必创造幸福,而是要去发现它)”可知,快乐来自于有意义的行动。
C
Keeping Childhood Present
When a children’s hospital in Kyiv was badly damaged in the summer of 2024, young patients had to be moved, often while treatment was still continuing. Among the adults who responded were Olha Bulkina and Maryna Berdar, founders of a hospital-clown group called the Bureau of Smiles and Support. The two women had created the project the year before, after gaining several years of experience in hospital clowning. Their aim was simple but demanding: illness and crisis should not be allowed to erase childhood.
After the attack, Bulkina and Berdar first helped with practical tasks. They cleared broken material and supported families as children were taken to safer hospitals. Then their clown work became even more necessary. Medical machines, unfamiliar rooms and worried adults could make a child feel that every choice had disappeared. The clowns tried to return a small part of that choice. A child could join a song, refuse a game, invent a character or simply watch.
Two younger volunteers, Tetiana Nosova and Vladyslava Kulinich, visited wards in bright costumes and used music, movement and gentle nonsense. Yet they did not treat laughter as an order. If a child was frightened or in pain, they stayed with that feeling instead of covering it with a joke. Their task was to build connection, not to put on a show at any cost.
Hospital staff noticed that some quiet children began to communicate more when the clowns arrived. The effect did not replace medicine, and no one claimed that it did. What changed was the emotional climate around treatment. For a few minutes, a patient could become the director of a ridiculous scene rather than only the object of medical attention.
The volunteers themselves were impressed by the children. Even in extremely difficult conditions, some young patients tried to comfort anxious adults. That courage reminded the clowns why they refused to stand aside: their work protected a space in which fear was real, but so were play, dignity and hope.
28. Why did the clown group’s work become more urgent after the hospital was damaged?
A. The group needed a new place for public performances.
B. The volunteers hoped to attract more professional actors.
C. Displaced children needed emotional support during treatment.
D. Hospital staff asked the clowns to replace practical assistance.
29. What did the clowns do when a child did not want to laugh?
A. They respected the child’s feeling and remained present.
B. They asked medical staff to continue the performance.
C. They changed the child into the director of every activity.
D. They left immediately to avoid increasing the child’s fear.
30. What does the underlined idea “refused to stand aside” imply in the last paragraph?
A. They would not compete with the medical team.
B. They chose to take action instead of remaining inactive.
C. They decided to keep away from dangerous buildings.
D. They wished to become the centre of public attention.
31. Which title best captures the main idea of the text?
A. When Performers Become Medical Experts
B. A Hospital That Learned to Laugh Again
C. How Children Entertain Worried Adults
D. Protecting Childhood Through Careful Humour
C 29. A 30. B 31. D
根据第二段中“They cleared broken material and supported families as children were taken to safer hospitals. Then their clown work became even more necessary. Medical machines, unfamiliar rooms and worried adults could make a child feel that every choice had disappeared.(她们清理破损的物品,并在孩子们被送往更安全的医院时,为家属提供支持。随后,她们的小丑工作变得更加必要。医疗设备、陌生的病房以及焦虑的成人,会让孩子感到所有选择都消失了)”可知,医院受损后儿童在转院和持续治疗中面对陌生环境与焦虑,因而更需要情感支持。
【29题详解】
细节理解题。根据第三段中“Yet they did not treat laughter as an order. If a child was frightened or in pain, they stayed with that feeling instead of covering it with a joke. Their task was to build connection, not to put on a show at any cost.(但他们并不把笑声当作一种指令。当孩子感到害怕或疼痛时,他们选择陪伴这种情绪,而不是用笑话来掩饰。他们的任务是建立连接,而非不惜一切代价地表演)”可知,小丑不会强迫孩子笑,而是接纳恐惧或疼痛并陪伴孩子。
【30题详解】
词句猜测题。根据第二段中“After the attack, Bulkina and Berdar first helped with practical tasks. They cleared broken material and supported families as children were taken to safer hospitals.(袭击发生后,Bulkina和Berdar首先参与了实际援助工作。她们清理破损的物品,并在孩子们被送往更安全的医院时,为家属提供支持)”可知,她们清理现场、协助转移并继续进入病房,refused to stand aside意为“她们没有袖手旁观,而是选择行动”。
【31题详解】
主旨大意题。根据全文内容,结合最后一段中“That courage reminded the clowns why they refused to stand aside: their work protected a space in which fear was real, but so were play, dignity and hope.(这份勇气让小丑们再次明白为何他们拒绝袖手旁观:他们的工作保护了一个空间,在那里恐惧是真实存在的,但游戏、尊严和希望也同样存在)”可知,文章重点不是表演本身,而是医院小丑以尊重选择、接纳情绪的方式守护儿童的游戏、尊严与希望,D项“通过审慎幽默守护童年”为最佳标题。
D
The value of embracing adversity (逆境) is almost always discovered after the fact. This is because it is also a truth that learning in the face of challenge, disappointment and frustration is as important as understanding what it takes to be successful. Learning these lessons well and surviving the tests that the lessons lie in lead to even greater moments of confidence and accomplishment.
Young athletes that are comfortable overcoming adversities are the ones that find the greatest growth, and ultimately the greatest success. Famous strength coach Vern Gambetta and others summarized this concept in the thought that, to be great, you must “be comfortable being uncomfortable”. To put it bluntly (直言地) the best athletes welcome challenge and adversity as a requirement for growth and achievement. The best coaches create environments that challenge limits and take athletes to places they wouldn’t go to on their own, and even create adversity from time to time for this reason.
To sum up, one very basic but exceptionally powerful conclusion can be reached: Young athletes, when facing moments of frustration and challenge in their personal sporting development, must be encouraged to solve problems themselves, work harder to overcome disappointments, and take ownership and control of their own destinies.
In today’s society, unfortunately, eliminating any sign of potential adversity for young athletes is universal (普遍的). Well-intentioned individuals (parents, coaches and many other related adults) frequently try to remove every barrier and challenge on the road their young athlete travels. The unfortunate product of these good intentions is only realized when the athletes finally come to a challenge that they must meet alone and then find themselves completely unprepared to deal with it and have a tough time reviving if they fail to overcome the challenge.
Psychologist Max Trenerry notes that the concept of willingness to accept adversity or failure is important whether for learning new skills in sports or dealing with anxiety-causing thoughts in therapy. He adds that, while every parent may ‘rescue’ their children from time to time, doing so frequently creates bigger long-term complications and prevents growth of personal perseverance.
32. Which statement will Vern Gambetta probably agree with?
A. Great athletes are good at avoiding adversity.
B. Good learners tend to have ambitious goals.
C. Athletes leading a relaxed life can be more successful.
D. Coaches should bring more challenges to athletes.
33. Which of the following can replace the underlined word “eliminating” in paragraph 4?
A. Facilitating. B. Creating. C. Removing. D. Welcoming.
34. What can we infer about the practice of removing adversity for young athletes?
A. It helps athletes build confidence quickly.
B. It may cause long-term problems for athletes.
C. It is supported by most psychologists.
D. It prepares athletes well for future challenges.
35. What does Max Trenerry think of parents “rescuing” their children frequently?
A. It is harmful to the development of children’s perseverance.
B. It is the best way to protect children from failure.
C. It helps children learn new skills more easily.
D. It reduces children’s anxiety about challenges.
D 33. C 34. B 35. A

根据第二段中“Famous strength coach Vern Gambetta and others summarized this concept in the thought that, to be great, you must “be comfortable being uncomfortable”. To put it bluntly (直言地) the best athletes welcome challenge and adversity as a requirement for growth and achievement. The best coaches create environments that challenge limits and take athletes to places they wouldn’t go to on their own, and even create adversity from time to time for this reason.( 著名的力量教练Vern Gambetta和其他人总结了这个概念,认为要想变得伟大,你必须“适应不舒服”。
根据第四段划线单词后文“Well-intentioned individuals (parents, coaches and many other related adults) frequently try to remove every barrier and challenge on the road their young athlete travels.( 善意的个人(父母、教练和许多其他相关的成年人)经常试图消除他们的年轻运动员在旅途中的每一个障碍和挑战。)”

Dear Editor,
Last term, I failed to make the school debate team. For two days I avoided discussing the result because I thought it proved I was a poor speaker. Then I asked the coach for one suggestion. She said my ideas were clear but my examples were too general. I began recording short speeches and replacing general claims with concrete evidence. Although I still felt nervous, I earned a place at the next try. The experience taught me to treat feedback as information, not as a final judgment.

Aunt Evie had a dollhouse and she put many toys there. Every Friday afternoon, I went to Aunt Evie’s home with my parents. The adults would sit around a table in the dining room, drinking and talking, while I played in the dollhouse for hours.
Sometimes I would pick up those lovely toys and place them in different positions. It was really fun. One time I asked Aunt Evie where she got the toys so that I could buy some, too. To my disappointment, Aunt Evie said that most of them were specially handmade gifts from her friends and couldn’t be bought anywhere. One such toy was a little bear, which was my favorite. It was so beautiful that I wanted to own it badly. “If I take it, Aunt Evie may not notice it,” I said to myself.
Therefore, on a Friday afternoon, I attempted to take the little bear away from Aunt Evie’s dollhouse. I had to wait until nobody was watching me, and it took me hours to get the courage to put the little bear in my pocket. Once I got the little bear, I couldn’t wait to go home. I had to hide it somewhere at home, so that no one would know I took it. That night after I went home with my parents, I couldn’t go to sleep. “What a bad person I am I stole something from my loved Aunt Evie,” I thought. When I woke up the next morning, I felt awful, but I didn’t dare to tell my parents the whole thing, let alone return the little bear to Aunt Evie. I was disappointed at my behavior. At some point, I started to hate the little bear and myself. And I knew if I didn’t do something, I wouldn’t get away from those bad feelings.

So I decided to tell my mom what I had done. After I told her all the story, I couldn’t hold back my tears. “I can’t live with myself and what I’ve done,” I said. My mom shook her head in disappointment. “There’s only one way to make this right. You have to return the little bear and apologize to Aunt Evie,” she said. Seized with fright, I stood frozen to the spot, thinking Aunt Evie would hate me. Finally, with my mom’s encouragement, I got up the courage to head for Aunt Evie’s home.
My hand was shaking when I rang the doorbell of Aunt Evie’s house. She unlocked the door, smiled and looked as if she already knew everything. I presented her with the little bear and made my apologies. “I admire your courage to return the bear. I would like to give it to you as a gift for your honesty. You’re always my favorite niece,” Aunt Evie said. On hearing that, I felt a wave of relief. Mom’s words rang in my ears, “Honesty is the best policy”
