HSBC Headquarters Building In 1979, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation(HSBC) launched an international design competition for its new headquarters. Foster +Partners, headed by architect Sir Norman Foster, won the competition with an out-of-the-box idea. With a budget of roughly S667 million in the day’s currency, the British visionary had the modular (模块化的) pieces constructed in the US, Japan and the UK before shipping them to Hong Kong for assembly (组装). The Henderson Zaha Hadid Architects(ZHA) has revealed plans to replace a multi-story car park in Hong Kong’s central business district with a new 623-foot tower. Like so many of ZHA’s visionary projects, the office tower, completed in 2023,integrates technology with natural environments. For instance, there is a sky garden which is an outdoor recreational space with a running track and a planting network that acts as an effective biological air-purifying filter by consuming pollutants. Two International Finance Centre On a clear day, you can see straight across Hong Kong from the offices in Two International Finance Center(2IFC), completed in 2003. Designed by the late Cesar Pelli, the 1,352-foot tower was the tallest in the city upon its completion. It transformed the skyline when it opened with its breath taking height and tapered (锥形的) shape, symbolizing Hong Kong’s rise. Bank of China Tower The 1,205-foot tower, completed in 1990,broke records at the time and became an instant landmark as the first tower over 985 feet outside North America. A vision of urban energy, expansion and geometry, the Bank of China Tower(BOC Tower)was designed to resemble a bamboo shoot, symbolizing strength, vitality and China’s emergence as a significant player in international finance. 1. What is special about the HSBC Headquarters Building? A. It was designed by several architect teams. B. It was funded by countries across the world. C. Its style was considered to be the most creative. D. Its design was a winning work of a competition. 2. Which building combines technology with nature ? A. HSBC Headquarters Building. B. The Henderson. C. Two International Finance Centre. D. Bank of China Tower. 3. What do the BOC Tower and 2IFC have in common? A. They are known for being eco-friendly. B. They were completed in the same century. C. They used to be the tallest in Hong Kong. D. They were designed by the same architect. D 2. B 3. 根据第二段“In 1979, the Hong Kong and Shanghai Banking Corporation(HSBC) launched an international design competition for its new headquarters. Foster +Partners, headed by architect Sir Norman Foster, won the competition with an out-of-the-box idea.(1979年,香港上海汇丰银行(HSBC)为其新总部发起了一项国际设计竞赛。由建筑师诺曼·福斯特爵士领导的福斯特建筑事务所以一个新颖的想法赢得了比赛)”可知,汇丰总部大楼的特别之处在于它的设计是一项竞赛的获奖作品。故选D。 【2题详解】 细节理解题。根据The Henderson部分中“Like so many of ZHA’s visionary projects, the office tower, completed in 2023,integrates technology with natural environments.(像ZHA的许多有远见的项目一样,这座办公大楼于2023年完工,将技术与自然环境融为一体)”可知,The Henderson结合了科技与自然。 根据倒数第二段“Designed by the late Cesar Pelli, the 1,352-foot tower was the tallest in the city upon its completion.(这座1352英尺高的塔楼由已故的凯撒·佩里设计,建成后是该市最高的塔楼)”以及最后一段“The 1,205-foot tower, completed in 1990,broke records at the time and became an instant landmark as the first tower over 985 feet outside North America.(这座1205英尺高的塔于1990年完工,打破了当时的纪录,成为北美以外第一座超过985英尺的塔,立即成为地标)”可知,中银大厦和第二国际金融中心的共同之处是都曾经是香港最高的。故选C。 B Courage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I constantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. The root of “courage” is “cor”, the Latin word for heart. Originally, courage meant “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel. I recently witnessed an example of true courage. During a mountain-climbing trip with my 15-year-old daughter and some college students, I noticed her struggling to keep up with the group. Despite my suggestions to rest, she persisted until she couldn’t breathe properly. Panicked, I called out to the front for help, but there was no response, and we had no cellphone signal. Fortunately, two students just came back to check on us. They offered assistance and calmed us down. As we continued at a slower pace, they shared their own experiences, from starting out as beginners like my daughter to becoming consistently among the first to reach the peak. “You know,” one of them said, looking at my daughter, “I was just like you when I started. But with practice and proper pace, you’ll get there too.” “Yeah, don’t let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling or not feeling alright. In fact, it’s important to speak up and ask for help when you need it. That’s how we improve and grow.” Reaching the mountain top was a huge relief for both my daughter and me. However, the two students addressed the celebrating group directly, emphasizing the importance of staying together in tough environments. Their words led the group to apologize to us for overlooking our struggle. I was totally amazed at their bravery, and my daughter learned that it’s okay to be the least experienced in a group. Courage, I’ve come to realize, has a ripple effect. Each time we choose courage, we inspire those around us to be a little braver and make the world a little better. 4. Why does the author mention the original meaning of courage? A. To argue for the true essence of courage. B. To question the common belief of courage. C. To show the changing meaning of courage. D. To compare different interpretations of courage. 5. What did the two students suggest the daughter do? A. Challenge her own limits. B. Seek help whenever possible. C. Keep to a suitable pace. D. Stick with experienced climbers. 6. Which action in the mountain-climbing story is an example of true courage? A. The mother asked the girl to rest. B. The girl tried hard not to fall behind. C. The group celebrated the reach of the top. D. The two students pointed out the group’s fault. 7. What does the author intend to tell us? A. Kindness connects us all. B. Being a beginner takes courage. C. With courage, everyone can be perfect. D. We don’t have to be a hero to be brave. A 5. B 6. D 7. 根据第一段中的“The root of “courage” is “cor”, the Latin word for heart. Originally, courage meant “to speak one’s mind by telling all one’s heart.” While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.(“勇气”一词的词根是拉丁语里代表“心”的“cor”,最初勇气的含义是“说出自己的想法,袒露全部的真心”。虽然现在勇气常与英雄主义联系在一起,但我相信真正的勇气在于坦诚地面对真实的自己和内心的感受。)” 可知,作者提及勇气的原始词义,是为了论证自己对勇气真正本质的看法。 【5题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的““Yeah, don’t let your lack of experience stop you,” the other added. “It’s okay to admit when you’re struggling or not feeling alright. In fact, it’s important to speak up and ask for help when you need it. That’s how we improve and grow.”(“是啊,别让你的经验不足阻碍你,”另一名学生补充道。“承认自己在挣扎或感觉不舒服是可以的。事实上,当你需要的时候,大声说出来并寻求帮助是很重要的。这就是我们进步和成长的方式。”)”可知,两名学生建议女儿在需要时寻求帮助。 【6题详解】 细节理解题。根据倒数第二段中的“However, the two students addressed the celebrating group directly, emphasizing the importance of staying together in tough environments. Their words led the group to apologize to us for overlooking our struggle.(然而,两名学生直接对正在庆祝的团队说了这番话,强调了在艰苦环境中团结在一起的重要性。他们的话让团队为忽视了我们的困境而向我们道歉)”以及最后一段中的“I was totally amazed at their bravery(我被他们的这份勇气深深震撼)”可知,两名学生敢于直接向团队指出其忽视同伴困境的错误,这一行为被作者视作真正的勇气的体现。 【7题详解】 推理判断题。根据第一段中的“While courage is often associated with heroism nowadays, I believe true courage lies in being open and honest about who we are and how we feel.(虽然现在勇气常与英雄主义联系在一起,但我相信真正的勇气在于坦诚地面对真实的自己和内心的感受。)”以及最后一段中的“Courage, I’ve come to realize, has a ripple effect. Each time we choose courage, we inspire those around us to be a little braver and make the world a little better.(我逐渐意识到,勇气具有连锁效应。每次我们选择勇敢,都会激励身边的人多一点勇气,让世界变得更美好。)”可知,作者通过爬山的经历想要告诉读者,真正的勇气并非一定要成为英雄,平凡生活中坦诚表达、彼此帮扶的勇敢选择,同样是真正的勇气,不必成为英雄才称得上勇敢。 C One of the biggest challenges that traditional educators face is how to unlock students’ love of learning. Once students overcome their fear or unwillingness, they will be on the track of becoming motivated learners. In order to help students discover the joy in learning, some teachers are turning to a simple but effective strategy called gamification-using game-related elements such as activities and rewards to promote students’ engagement in class. With an origin in educational psychology, this approach is designed to reach students by making the learning process funny and interesting. What’s more, researches show that gamification can also make assignments less stressful. Without too much pressure, students will associate learning with curiosity and joy. Accordingly, they feel like continuing the journey because positive feelings have boosted their confidence. But like any other strategies, gamification has its drawbacks when used incorrectly. It is very likely that some students only focus on winning rewards but have no interest in understanding concepts or learning new skills-exactly the opposite of the desired outcome. To avoid this, teachers can help prevent students from becoming wrongly motivated by choosing suitable rewards. Instead of class parties or snacks, try rewards that help students develop a passion for academic subjects. For example, have students earn points towards a class field trip by behaving and doing their assignments, or pair subjects that a student dislikes with fun books or activities to encourage motivation. That way, they associate fun with reading, math, or other skills. More examples include competing on a leader-board, holding a talent show, or playing other team-building games. All activities and rewards need to be carefully selected and well arranged. If you’re having a hard time getting your class interested in learning, talk with them together or individually about what motivates them and include it into your student engagement strategies. 8. What can we learn about gamification from the first two paragraphs? A. It advocates a traditional teaching style. B. It improves students’ critical thinking. C. It promotes the use of video games in class. D. It motivates students to be active learners. 9. What is the author’s attitude to the application of gamification? A. Worried. B. Favorable. C. Objective. D. Doubtful. 10. How should teachers avoid the drawbacks of gamification? A. Associate learning process with assignments. B. Set learning goals for different students. C. Select suitable rewards for teaching activities. D. Encourage teamwork by holding class parties. 11. What is the text mainly about? A. The future influences of gamification. B. The analysis of a teaching strategy. C. Recent research on education system. D. A discovery about motivating learners. D 9. C 10. C 11. 由文章第二段“In order to help students discover the joy in learning, some teachers are turning to a simple but effective strategy called gamification-using game-related elements such as activities and rewards to promote students’ engagement in class. With an origin in educational psychology, this approach is designed to reach students by making the learning process funny and interesting. (为了帮助学生发现学习中的乐趣,一些老师正转向一种简单但有效的策略,称为游戏化,利用活动和奖励等游戏相关元素来促进学生的课堂参与度。这种方法起源于教育心理学,旨在通过使学习过程变得开心和有趣来接触学生。)”可知,课堂游戏化可以促使学生成为积极的学习者。故选D项。 【9题详解】 推理判断题。由文章第四段“But like any other strategies, gamification has its drawbacks when used incorrectly. It is very likely that some students only focus on winning rewards but have no interest in understanding concepts or learning new skills-exactly the opposite of the desired outcome. (但就像任何其它策略一样,游戏化在使用不当时也有缺点。很可能有些学生只专注于赢得奖励,而对理解概念或学习与预期结果完全相反的新技能没有兴趣。)”以及结合上文可知,作者本文既讲了课堂游戏化的优点,也讲述了缺点,所以作者对课堂游戏化的态度是客观的。故选C项。 【10题详解】 细节理解题。由文章第四段“To avoid this, teachers can help prevent students from becoming wrongly motivated by choosing suitable rewards. Instead of class parties or snacks, try rewards that help students develop a passion for academic subjects. (为了避免这种情况,教师可以通过选择合适的奖励来帮助防止学生受到错误的激励。与其参加班级聚会或吃零食,不如尝试奖励,帮助学生培养对学术科目的热情。)”可知,教师可以通过为教学活动选择合适的奖励来避免游戏化的弊端。故选C项。 【11题详解】 主旨大意题。由文章第二段“In order to help students discover the joy in learning, some teachers are turning to a simple but effective strategy called gamification-using game-related elements such as activities and rewards to promote students’ engagement in class. With an origin in educational psychology, this approach is designed to reach students by making the learning process funny and interesting. (为了帮助学生发现学习中的乐趣,一些老师正转向一种简单但有效的策略,称为游戏化,利用活动和奖励等游戏相关元素来促进学生的课堂参与度。这种方法起源于教育心理学,旨在通过使学习过程变得开心和有趣来接触学生。)”以及下文可知,文章主要对课堂游戏化对提高学生学习兴趣的作用进行了各方面的分析。所以B项“The analysis of a teaching strategy. (一个教学策略的分析。)”符合文意。故选B项。 D Giraffes have one of the most recognizable shapes on the planet. “They walk so gracefully that it looks like they are floating across the savanna (热带草原),” says Michael Brown, an ecologist with the Giraffe Conservation Foundation (GCF). Our familiarity with these tall animals can sometimes hide their declining numbers, masking a “silent extinction (灭绝)”. Expanding agriculture and human communities across Africa have destroyed or fragmented large areas of the savanna where giraffes find food, causing a 40 percent decline in giraffe species since 1985. Nubian giraffes, a critically endangered subspecies found in South Sudan, Ethiopia, Uganda and Kenya, have lost an estimated 95 percent of their population. Today they’ re down to perhaps 3,000 animals. This crisis recently led GCF to partner with African Parks, a conservation group managing Badingilo and Boma National Parks in South Sudan. They aim to track (追踪), study and protect the giraffes. Tracking giraffes presents a challenge. GPS collars typically go around the neck, but giraffe necks, six feet long and varying in thickness, aren’t suited for collars; the devices slide down when the animal lowers its head, Researchers tried anklets (踝环), chest harnesses and even tags (标签) on their horn-like nubs, but nothing worked for long, says Sara Ferguson, a GCF wildlife veterinarian. Recent technological advances have shrunk (缩小) trackers to the size of a candy bar, small enough to attach to the tail or an ear. The new tags are solar-powered, less noticeable and should last a year or more. In April, 2024, Ferguson and others from African Parks attached trackers to 11 Nubian giraffes. The data collected will help identify key habitats (栖息地) and routes within the parks’ 7.4 million acres, potentially driving their expansion and showing where extra patrols to limit illegal hunting or community education to encourage local support for conservation can save giraffe lives. “We can’t save what we don’t understand,” says Julian Fennessy, co-founder and conservation director of GCF. “We need these data to protect this landscape before it’s too late.” 12. What has caused a 40 percent decline in giraffe species since 1985? A. Illegal hunting. B. Climate change. C. habitat loss. D. Disease outbreaks. 13. Why are traditional GPS collars unsuitable for giraffes? A. They are too heavy. B. They fall off easily. C. They provide inaccurate data. D. They affect the giraffes’ movement. 14. What is the main goal of tracking the giraffes? A. To monitor their health status. B. To detect threats from other species. C. To study their social structure. D. To identify their key habitats and routes. 15. Which would be the best title for the text? A. The silent extinction of Nubian giraffes B. Technology for wildlife protection C. Giraffe-tracking innovations (创新) D. Joint conservation efforts 【答案】12. C 13. B 14. D 15. 根据第二段中“Expanding agriculture and human communities across Africa have destroyed or fragmented large areas of the savanna where giraffes find food, causing a 40 percent decline in giraffe species since 1985.(非洲各地不断扩大的农业和人类社区破坏或分割了长颈鹿觅食的大片热带草原,导致自1985年以来长颈鹿物种数量下降了40%)”可知,导致长颈鹿物种数量下降40%的原因是栖息地的丧失。 根据第四段中“GPS collars typically go around the neck, but giraffe necks, six feet long and varying in thickness, aren’t suited for collars; the devices slide down when the animal lowers its head, Researchers tried anklets (踝环), chest harnesses and even tags (标签) on their horn-like nubs, but nothing worked for long, says Sara Ferguson, a GCF wildlife veterinarian.(GPS项圈通常绕在脖子上,但长颈鹿的脖子长六英尺,厚度各不相同,不适合戴项圈,当长颈鹿低头时设备会滑落。GCF野生动物兽医Sara Ferguson表示,研究人员尝试了踝环、胸带,甚至在它们的角状结节上贴标签,但没有一种能长期起效)”可知,传统的GPS项圈不适合长颈鹿是因为它们容易滑落。 【14题详解】 细节理解题。根据最后一段中“The data collected will help identify key habitats (栖息地) and routes within the parks’ 7.4 million acres, potentially driving their expansion and showing where extra patrols to limit illegal hunting or community education to encourage local support for conservation can save giraffe lives.(收集的数据将有助于确定公园740万英亩范围内的关键栖息地和路线,这可能会推动公园的扩张,并显示在哪些地方进行额外的巡逻以限制非法狩猎或社区教育以鼓励当地对保护的支持可以拯救长颈鹿的生命)”可知,追踪长颈鹿的主要目标是识别它们的关键栖息地和路线。 With everything going on in the world, it’s no wonder so many of us are struggling to sleep. ____16____ And it’s hard to fall back asleep again. The annual Mini Marathon was about to begin, and the streets were lined with enthusiastic audience. Among the crowd, a father and his young son, Alex, stood ready at the starting line. For months, Alex had been training diligently, dreaming of winning the race and bringing home the trophy (奖杯). Alex’s father, Mark, had always supported his son’s passion for running. He had run marathons himself in his younger days and was proud to see his son follow in his footsteps. As the race officials gave the final instructions, Mark placed a reassuring hand on Alex’s shoulder. “Remember, it’s not just about winning,” he said. “It’s about giving your best and enjoying the journey.” The starting gun fired, and the runners took off. Alex rushed ahead, his legs moving swiftly — and his heart pounding with determination. Mark followed closely behind, keeping an eye on his son. The first few kilometers flew by, and Alex maintained a steady pace, feeling confident and strong. As they approached the halfway mark, Alex noticed a disturbance on the side of the road. A small crowd had gathered around something on the ground. Curiosity sparked, Alex slowed down and saw a tiny, injured squirrel lying in the grass. Its leg was twisted at an odd angle, and it was obviously in pain. Without hesitation, Alex stopped and knelt beside the animal. Mark, who had been a few steps behind, quickly joined his son. “What’s going on?” he asked, concerned. “It’s an injured squirrel,” Alex replied, his voice filled with sympathy. “I can’t just leave it alone.” Mark looked at his son, torn between the race and the animal. “Do you want to help it?” he asked gently. Alex nodded, his eyes determined. “Yes, I do. It’s the right thing to do.” Mark smiled, proud of his son’s decision. “Then let’s take care of it. We can always finish the race later.” Together, they carefully picked up the squirrel and carried it to the medical aid station. The doctor examined the squirrel and provided immediate treatment. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ “Dad, we have no hope of winning anymore,” Alex said, standing on the track with disappointment. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 【答案】 The doctor examined the squirrel and provided immediate treatment. He gently set the broken leg and bandaged it carefully, saying that the little animal would recover soon with proper care. Alex watched with relief, a warm feeling rising in his heart. When the doctor promised to look after the squirrel until it was fully healed, Alex nodded gratefully and thanked him sincerely. Before leaving, he gently touched the squirrel’s head, whispering softly that it would be fine. Then he and Mark rushed back to the track, hoping to continue the race. “Dad, we have no hope of winning anymore,” Alex said, standing on the track with disappointment. Mark placed his hand on Alex’s shoulder and smiled gently. “Son, remember what I told you? It’s not just about winning. What you did today meant more than any trophy. I’m proud of you.” Hearing this, Alex’s eyes lit up with pride. Just then, the race announcer called their names. To their surprise, the organizers awarded them a special prize for their kindness. B Courage is a huge theme in my life, a quality I constantly seek, appreciate, and analyze. C One of the biggest challenges that traditional educators face is how to unlock students’ love of learning. D Giraffes have one of the most recognizable shapes on the planet. _________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ 第1页/共1页 学科网(北京)股份有限公司 $
