S1: What problem do you want to solve?
S2: Well, cats always scratch sofas, but I just had an idea about how to fix it.
S1: Really? What's your idea?
S2: It's really simple! Cats like to scratch things at home. But most of them don't like strong smells, such as the smell of oranges, so I made a spray with a strong
orange smell. When I spray it on the sofa, the cats will stay away from it.
S1: That's amazing!
What does S1 think of the idea?
How does S1 feel about the idea?
Life is full of surprises. When something surprising happens, we can use these expressions to show surprise:

Benjamin Franklin was a great American scientist. At that time, lightning often hit buildings and caused big
fires. People suffered a lot from lightning. 1
Franklin believed lightning was a kind of electricity. To prove his idea, he did a famous kite experiment in a
thunderstorm. 2 The kite had a metal wire on the top and a long hemp string. When the rain came, the wet
hemp string could conduct electricity from the clouds.
He tied a metal key to the hemp string. 3 When Franklin got close to the key, he felt a small electric shock and
saw sparks. This clearly proved that lightning was electricity.
The experiment was successful, but extremely dangerous. 4 So we can never try this experiment by ourselves. However, this great discovery helped Franklin invent the lightning-rod. It has protected millions of buildings from lightning strikes.
A. It was used to collect electric charges from the clouds.
B. Many people didn’t understand what lightning really was.
C. He carefully made a special silk kite for the experiment.
D. Some people even lost their lives when copying the experiment.
E. He invented many useful things in his whole life.
Writing an article about a great idea
Writing
Many great ideas came about because people faced difficult problems. Find such a problem and write an article about how someone solved it thanks to a brilliant idea.
● What was the problem to be solved?

Archimedes
The king wanted to know if his crown was made of pure gold, but no one could check it without breaking the crown.
Archimedes, a famous ancient Greek scientist.

The idea & how it solved the problem
Influence of the great idea
One day, Lu Ban hurt his finger on a leaf with sharp teeth. He realized that a tool with small sharp teeth could cut through wood easily. He invented the saw. The saw was much faster and could cut wood smoothly, saving a lot of time and effort.
The saw became a key tool for carpenters. It made woodworking much faster and helped people build better houses and furniture. Even today, the saw is still widely used around the world.

him a fancy golden crown.
At first, he was very satisfied with it, but later he began to doubt whether
it was a pure golden crown.

So he sent the crown to Archimedes and asked him to find out the truth.
At first, Archimedes could not figure it out.
Later when he took a bath, he noticed that the water ran over.

So he knew how to solve the king’s problem.
First, he asked the king for some gold of the same weight.
Next he put the gold into one pot, and some water ran into the bowl.
Then he put the crown into the other pot.
This time, even more water ran into the bowl.
So he proved that the crown displaced more water than gold of the same
weight.
So he knew that it was not completely made of gold.
