Unit 6 Enjoy the festivals
Lesson 1 (Wrap up &Let’s explore )
I. Teaching Aims
1.Knowledge Aims: Students will be able to review and use the key vocabulary and sentence patterns about festivals. They can read and understand the short passages about the Ice and Snow Festival, Hanami Festival, and Tulip Festival.
2.Ability Aims: Students can talk about how people celebrate different festivals and match the festivals with the correct countries. They can also use the mind map to describe other festivals of colour.
3.Emotional Aims: Students will learn to appreciate different cultures and enjoy the beauty of festivals around the world.
II. Key and Difficult Points
1.Key Points: Reviewing the ways of celebrating festivals and reading the new texts in “Let’s explore”.
2.Difficult Points: Reading and understanding the new words like “Hanami”, “Tulip”, and “Netherlands”. Guiding students to talk about their own ideas using the mind map.
III. Teaching Tools
1.The textbook (Page 72).
2.A big game board (or PPT) for “Let’s celebrate!”.
3.Some pictures of the Ice and Snow Festival, cherry flowers, and tulips.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1: Warm-up and Lead-in Greet the students and have a free talk about the festivals we learned in this unit. Ask them: “What is your favourite festival? Why?” Let a few students share their answers. [Purpose] To activate students’ background knowledge and get them ready for the review game.
Step 2: Let’s Celebrate! (Game Time) 1. Show the game board on the PPT or use the one in the book. Explain the rules simply: Students take turns to roll the dice, move their pieces, and answer the questions on the cards. 2. If they land on “Miss a turn” or “Go back 2 steps”, they just follow the rule. 3. Walk around the classroom to help students who have trouble answering. For example, if a student gets “What do people do at the Dragon Boat Festival?”, remind them of “dragon boat races” and “zongzi”. [Purpose] To review the key questions and answers in a fun way, making sure everyone gets a chance to speak.
Step 3: Check It (Self-evaluation) 1. Ask students to open their books to Page 72 and look at the “Check it” box. 2. Give them 2 minutes to fill in the blanks by themselves. 3. Ask some volunteers to read their answers aloud. For example, “I can say names of festivals like Spring Festival and Christmas.” [Purpose] To help students know what they have learned and build their confidence.
Step 4: Let’s Explore - Festivals of Colour 1. Look and Match: Show the pictures of the three festivals on the board. Ask students to read the three short passages and match them with the countries (China, Japan, the Netherlands). Check the answers together. 2. Read and Learn: Read the passages together. Point out the colours: white for the Ice and Snow Festival, pink for Hanami, and many colours for the Tulip Festival. Ask simple questions like “What do people do under the cherry trees?” to check understanding. [Purpose] To practice reading skills and learn about festivals in different countries through simple texts and pictures.
Step 5: Work in Pairs (Mind Map) 1. Draw a simple mind map on the blackboard with “Festivals of colour” in the center. 2. Ask students to work with their partners. Give them 5 minutes to think of other festivals and their colours. For example, Red → Spring Festival, Green → Tree Planting Day. 3. Invite 2-3 pairs to stand up and share their ideas. [Purpose] To let students use what they have learned to create new content and practice speaking in pairs.
Step 6: Summary and Homework Summarize the class by saying: “Today we played a game and learned about colourful festivals around the world.” Homework: Draw a picture of your favourite festival and write one sentence about it. [Purpose] To wrap up the lesson and extend learning to after class.
