Unit 6 Enjoy the festivals — Lesson 4 (Fuel up) I. Teaching Aims Students will be able to listen to and chant "New Year's coming!" and understand the meaning of the chant about New Year celebrations. Students will be able to distinguish the long "oo" (/uː/) and short "oo" (/ʊ/) sounds and read words like "food" and "good" correctly. Students will be able to complete the listening exercise in Activity 3 by filling in the blanks about New Year plans. Students will be able to talk about how they are going to celebrate the New Year with a partner using the sentence pattern "I'm going to...". II. Key and Difficult Points Key points: Chant reading and rhythm, phonics knowledge of long "oo" and short "oo" sounds, and understanding the listening text in Activity 3. Difficult points: Correctly distinguishing and pronouncing the long "oo" (/uː/) and short "oo" (/ʊ/) sounds in different words, and using "I'm going to..." to express personal New Year plans fluently in Activity 4. III. Teaching Tools Multimedia courseware, audio player, New Year pictures, flashcards of key words (balloon, light, party, bell, food, New Year), and a printed listening worksheet. IV. Teaching Procedures Step 1: Warm-up and Lead-in (5 min) Greet the class and show some pictures of New Year celebrations on the screen — balloons, lights, a big party, and a clock striking midnight. Ask students: "What festival is it?" and "What do people usually do at New Year?" Let a few students share their ideas. Then tell them: "Today we're going to learn a chant about New Year. Let's find out what's in it!" Purpose: To activate students' background knowledge about New Year and create a festive mood to draw their attention to the lesson. Step 2: Chant Learning (10 min) Tell students to look at Activity 1 on page 68. Play the chant audio once and ask students to just listen and feel the rhythm. Play it again and read after the audio line by line. Have students chant together as a class, then in two groups (boys vs girls), and finally a few volunteers chant individually. Go through the meaning of each line — "Put up balloons and lights", "There's a party at night", "We cook good food and sing", "Soon the bells will ring" — and explain any unfamiliar words. End with the last two lines: "Happy New Year, everyone! Let's look to the future and have fun!" Purpose: To train students' pronunciation, rhythm and intonation through repeated chanting, and to help them understand New Year customs in an enjoyable way. Step 3: Phonics Practice (8 min) Move to Activity 2. Ask students to read the chant again and underline all words with "oo". Write "food" and "good" on the board. Say each word slowly and ask students to notice the different sounds. Explain: "food" has the long "oo" sound (/uː/) — like the sound in "moon" and "soon"; "good" has the short "oo" sound (/ʊ/) — like the sound in "book" and "look". Write two columns on the board and invite students to come up and put more "oo" words in the right column. Then play "Hear it, say it" and have students repeat after the audio. Purpose: To help students notice the two pronunciations of "oo" through guided discovery and practice them in a controlled, interactive way. Step 4: Listening Practice (10 min) Tell students to look at Activity 3 on page 69. Explain: "You will hear four people talk about their New Year plans. Listen and write the missing words." Play the audio for the first time and ask students to just listen. Play it a second time and give them time to fill in the blanks. Check answers together — 1. Xiaoman: with her family / ring; 2. Charlie: stay up late; 3. Maria: go back home / dinner; 4. Daniel: New Year show. Ask students to read the complete sentences aloud. Purpose: To train students' listening for specific information and reinforce the target structure "I'm going to..." in the context of New Year plans. Step 5: Pair Work (8 min) Move to Activity 4. Show the two example sentences on the screen: "I'm going to watch the New Year show." and "I'm going to put up colourful lights with my family." Practice them with the class first. Then ask students to work in pairs and talk about how they are going to celebrate the New Year. Encourage them to use words from the chant and the listening. Walk around the classroom to offer help. Invite two or three pairs to perform their dialogues in front of the class. Purpose: To provide a communicative opportunity for students to use the target language freely and build their confidence in speaking. Step 6: Summary and Homework (4 min) Summarize the chant, the "oo" sounds, and the key sentence pattern "I'm going to..." with the whole class. For homework, ask students to write three sentences about their New Year plans using "I'm going to..." and draw a small picture of their plan. Purpose: To consolidate the key language points of the lesson and extend learning to students' own lives. V. Blackboard Design Unit 6 Enjoy the festivals — Lesson 4 (Fuel up) Chant: "New Year's coming!" — New Year is near. Our friends are here. Put up balloons and lights. There's a party at night. We cook good food and sing. Soon the bells will ring! Phonics: long "oo" /uː/: food, moon, soon | short "oo" /ʊ/: good, book, look I'm going to watch the New Year show. / I'm going to put up colourful lights with my family.
