Unit 6 Enjoy the festivals — Lesson 3 (Speed up) I. Teaching Aims 1. Students will be able to understand the story "Barbapapa's Christmas tree" and answer the question "What's the Christmas tree?" 2. Students will be able to read the story again and choose the correct answers in Activity 2. 3. Students will be able to write about a new way to celebrate festivals using the sentence patterns learned in this unit. 4. Students will develop an awareness of protecting trees and the environment while enjoying the fun of festivals. II. Key and Difficult Points Key points: Understanding the story "Barbapapa's Christmas tree" and completing Activity 2 (Read again and circle). Difficult points: Using complete sentences to describe a new way to celebrate festivals in Activity 3, and understanding the moral of the story — protecting trees and the environment. III. Teaching Tools Multimedia courseware, audio player, pictures of Christmas trees and forests, flashcards of key words (forest, cut down, Christmas tree), and a printed worksheet for Activity 3. IV. Teaching Procedures Step 1: Warm-up and Lead-in (5 min) Greet the class and sing a simple Christmas song together, such as "Jingle Bells". Then show pictures of different Christmas trees on the screen and ask students: "What's the Christmas tree?" Let a few students share their ideas. Introduce the title of the story: "Barbapapa's Christmas tree" and tell students they are going to read an interesting story about a special Christmas tree. [Purpose] To activate students' interest in the topic of Christmas and prepare them for the story reading. Step 2: Presentation and Reading (15 min) Show the pictures from the story on pages 66-67 one by one. Read the story aloud with expression while students follow in their books. Pause at key points to explain new words: "forest", "cut down", and the sentence "Please don't cut down this tree. It's our home." Ask students to read after you in choral reading and then in groups. After reading, ask the question from Activity 1: "What's the Christmas tree?" Let students discuss in pairs and share their answers. Then play the audio for students to listen and read along. [Purpose] To help students understand the story through visual support and repeated reading, and to train their listening and reading skills. Step 3: Reading Comprehension (10 min) Move to Activity 2. Tell students to read the story again and circle the correct answers for the four questions. Give them 3 minutes to work individually. After that, check the answers together as a class. Ask students to raise their hands and read out their choices. For each question, ask one student to explain why they chose that answer, e.g., "Why do we choose 'animals' for question 2?" Guide students to find the evidence in the text: "But I live in the forest. Animals here need these trees." [Purpose] To train students' reading for detail and check their understanding of the story content. Step 4: Writing Practice (10 min) Move to Activity 3. Show the three guiding questions on the screen: "What is the festival?", "What is the new way of celebration?", "Why do you choose this way?" Give students some examples first, such as "Spring Festival is coming. The new way is to make paper-cutting decorations instead of buying new ones because it is eco-friendly." Then ask students to work in pairs to write about a new way to celebrate a festival. Walk around to offer help. Invite two or three pairs to read their writing to the class. [Purpose] To provide students with a chance to use the target language in writing and to develop their creative thinking about festivals. Step 5: Summary and Homework (5 min) Summarize the story with the whole class. Ask students: "What did Dad learn from the animals?" Guide them to understand the message: we should protect trees and the environment. For homework, ask students to draw a picture of their own special Christmas tree and write three sentences about it using what they learned today. [Purpose] To consolidate the story content and the environmental message, and to extend the learning to students' personal lives. V. Blackboard Design Unit 6 Enjoy the festivals — Lesson 3 (Speed up) Barbapapa's Christmas tree Dad goes to the forest -> Animals: "Please don't cut down this tree. It's our home." -> Dad: "I see. You're right." -> Dad has an idea! Key words: forest, cut down, Christmas tree New way to celebrate: ... is coming. The new way is ... because ...
