IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 min)
Show pictures of four festivals (Dragon Boat Festival, Lantern Festival, Spring Festival, Mid-Autumn Festival). Ask students: “What festival is this?” Then ask: “What do you do at the Mid-Autumn Festival?” Let students share freely.
[Purpose: Activate students’ background knowledge about festivals and lead into the topic.]
Step 2 Present the dialogue (10 min)
Play the audio for the dialogue “A special Mid-Autumn Festival.” Students listen and follow. Then show the dialogue on PPT and explain new words: zookeeper, mooncake, bamboo, giraffe. Read after the audio together. Ask: “What are the children going to do?” Students answer: “Make mooncakes for the animals.”
[Purpose: Let students get the main idea through listening and introduce new vocabulary in context.]
Step 3 Read and answer (8 min)
Students read the dialogue again and answer: “Who are the mooncakes for?” (The animals at the zoo.) Then do Activity 2: Read again and write. Students fill in the table — what mooncakes each animal eats:
Animal
Mooncake
tigers
meat mooncakes
pandas
bamboo mooncakes
giraffes
leaves and carrots
elephants
banana mooncakes
Check answers together.
[Purpose: Train students’ reading for detail and check comprehension.]
Step 4 Pair work (7 min)
Work in pairs. Student A asks: “What mooncakes are you going to make?” Student B answers: “I’m going to make… for the…” Then swap. Teacher walks around and helps.
[Purpose: Practice the target sentence patterns in a simple speaking task.]
Step 5 Summary and homework (5 min)
Summarize the dialogue: the children made different mooncakes for different animals at the zoo. It’s a special and happy Mid-Autumn Festival. Homework: 1. Read the dialogue three times. 2. Draw a picture of mooncakes for an animal and write one sentence about it.
[Purpose: Review the lesson content and give related homework.]
V. Blackboard Design
Unit 6 Enjoy the festivals (Lesson 1)
A special Mid-Autumn Festival!
What mooncakes are you going to make?
I’m going to make meat mooncakes for the tigers. I’m going to make bamboo mooncakes for the pandas. I’m going to make mooncakes for the giraffes. I’ll use leaves and carrots. I want to make banana mooncakes for the elephants.
They love our mooncakes!
