A
Choosing a major is one of the biggest decisions you’ll make while you’re in college. It’s important that you make your choice confidently and after some consideration.
There’s Nothing Wrong With Being “Undecided”.
Between 20% and 50% of college freshmen enter school without a declared major. Keep in mind that there’s nothing wrong with remaining “undecided” or “undeclared” for the first few years of your college career. You can use this time to decide what you’re interested in. Also, keep in mind that even if you do declare a major your freshman year, you can always change your mind. About one-third of first-time college students change their major within three years. Even more, over 60% of college graduates say they would go back and change their major if they could, primarily to pursue their passion areas and expand their job opportunities.
Explore Your Passions and Abilities.
Set aside some time to really explore your passions and take stock of your unique abilities. With an undeclared major to start, you can take time to really develop into what interests you. Join clubs around campus to connect with fellow students who share your interests. Take electives in areas that you might not otherwise have an opportunity to experience. For example, when else might you be able to take a poetry course or an art history seminar? College is the perfect time to step out of your box and expand your horizons. As a student with an undeclared major, you’re uniquely positioned to do just that.
Consider Employment Opportunities.
While it’s important to choose a major that interests you, it’s also critical to choose a college major that will provide you with future employment opportunities. Statistically, the college majors that tend to have the most earning power are in STEM. These majors might include health sciences or computer engineering. Business majors can also expect a higher than average earning potential. That being said, employers frequently recognize that graduates who majored in the liberal arts have valuable soft skills, too, including strong communication, written and verbal skills, and leadership abilities. The key is to pick a major that will be marketable for the career you’re interested in pursuing.
Talk to an Academic Advisor.
If you need a little guidance, set up an appointment with an academic advisor or career counselors. Career development counselors and academic advisors can help you narrow down your options. If you have an idea of what classes you’ve most enjoyed and what career paths are most appealing to you, working with one of these professionals might be the final push you need to pick a major.
Still have some doubts now? You can submit your questions Here.
36. What can we learn from the second paragraph?
A. Most graduates went back to college and changed their majors for a brighter future.
B. Most students frequently change their majors throughout their college years.
C. It is all right to remain undecided on majors for only the freshman year.
D. You don’t necessarily need to declare your majors upon entering college.
37. You are advised to take electives as described in the third paragraph because ______.
A. the courses and seminars are popular with college students
B. it helps you fully explore where your interest lies
C. you can share your common interest with your fellow students
D. your major lies in the areas, you can’t miss them
38. An example of having good soft skills is that ______.
A. you express yourself well in a controversial business discussion
B. you fix the technical problems of computers in your office easily
C. you quickly figure out why the communication equipment doesn’t work
D. you never delegate but shoulder more of the workload at work
39. Which of the following statements is Not True?
A. Your major should be a reflection of your interests and career goals.
B. Choose a major that will give you future employment opportunities.
C. An academic advisor or career counselors will decide the major for you.
D. You should choose your major carefully and confidently.
40. Which of the following is the passage probably taken from?
A. A travel commentary. B. A website page.
C. A university guide. D. A popular magazine.

On a sunny Sunday morning, I went to my first ballet class. But I didn’t do any dancing. This was Class on Stage, a rare opportunity to watch dancers from the National Ballet of Canada warm up during their daily 75-minute class at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts.
I went in knowing that I would be impressed by the physicality of it. Top athletes aren’t born; they’re made.
Forty-five minutes into the class, the dancers didn’t even look tired. Now the basic warm-up work was done, and the floor was cleared. Although watching dancers quietly plie (下蹲屈膝) in unison with complete control was a calming experience, the floor exercises that followed were quite the opposite.
The sequences were short but became increasingly complicated, so I stopped paying attention to the directions I couldn’t follow, and simply allowed myself to observe the remarkable results. At the end of the class, I applauded and watched the dancers leave the stage. They had already accomplished so much with their day, and I was left in complete awe, not just of my inadequacy, but also of their effort.
As I headed home, I tried to think of the last time I worked as hard as those dancers at anything in my own life. So much has been made easier by technology: I can listen to any song I want, whenever I want. I can have pretty much anything delivered. I can stay in touch with friends without making the time to see them. But instead of taking shortcuts, maybe I should look for challenges. Because once you start doing hard things, they become easier, and then you know you can do them. Until one day you find yourself at the end of your ballet warm up, having barely broken a sweat.
With the determination and discipline of ballet dancers still fresh in my mind, I commit to doing some hard things: I get back in the habit of practicing a language I’ve been trying to learn. I lift heavier weights. I take the stairs. I write essays.
Nothing demands as much of me as what ballet demands of those dancers every day. They inspire me. So, I guess what I’m trying to say is that sometimes a fitness class can change your life, even if you’re not the one taking it.
41. Why did the author visit the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts?
A. To participate in a ballet class.
B. To meet top athletes and learn about their training.
C. To observe a Class on Stage where dancers warm up.
D.To watch a performance by the National Ballet of Canada.
42.How did the author feel about the dancers during the class?
A. Tired and bored.
B. Impressed and inspired.
C. Amused and fascinated.
D. Indifferent and uninterested.
43.What did the author reflect on as he headed home?
A. The experiences related to hard work.
B. The importance of technology in life.
C. The techniques used by the dancers.
D. The beauty of ballet performances.
44. What does the author commit to doing?
A. Developing a well-balanced lifestyle.
B. Becoming a professional ballet dancer.
C. Setting personal challenges in daily life.
D.Avoiding taking shortcuts when exercising.
45.What does the author convey at the end of the passage?
A. Fitness classes are only for athletes.
B. Ballet is the most important art form.
C.Watching others is more valuable than participating.
D.Hard work and discipline can lead to personal growth.
C
Imagine this. You need an image of a balloon for a work presentation and turn to an Al text-to-image generator, like Midjourney or DALL-E, to create a suitable image. You enter the prompt (提示词) “red balloon against a blue sky” but the generator returns an image of an egg instead.
What’s going on? The generator you’re using may have been “poisoned”. What does this mean? Text-to-image generators work by being trained on large datasets that include millions or billions of images. Some of the generators have been trained by indiscriminately scraping online images, many of which may be under copyright. This has led to many copyright infringement (侵害) cases where artists have accused big tech companies of stealing and profiting from their work.
This is also where the idea of “poison” comes in. Researchers who want to empower individual artists have recently created a tool named “Nightshade” to fight back against unauthorised image scraping. The tool works by slightly altering an image’s pixels (像素) in a way that confuses the computer vision system but leaves the image unaltered to a human’s eyes. If an organization then scrapes one of these images to train a future AI model, its data pool becomes “poisoned”. This can result in mistaken learning, which makes the generator return unintended results. As in our earlier example, a balloon might become an egg.
The higher the number of “poisoned” images in the training data, the greater the impact. Because of how generative AI works, the damage from “poisoned” images also affects related prompt keywords. For example, if a “poisoned” image of a Picasso work is used in training data, prompt results for masterpieces from other artists can also be affected.
Possibly, tools like Nightshade can be abused by some users to intentionally upload “poisoned” images in order to confuse AI generators. But the Nightshade’s developer hopes the tool will make big tech companies more respectful of copyright. It does challenge a common belief among computer scientists that data found online can be used for any purpose they see fit.
Human rights activists, for example, have been concerned for some time about the indiscriminate use of machine vision in wider society. This concern is particularly serious concerning facial recognition. There is a clear connection between facial recognition cases and data poisoning, as both relate to larger questions around technological governance. It may be better to see data poisoning as an innovative solution to the denial of some fundamental human rights.
46. The first paragraph is used to ____________.
A. report a piece of news B. inform an academic accident
C. arouse readers’ interest D. introduce some AI generators
47. The underlined word ‘scraping’ (para. 2) is closest in meaning to ____________.
A. facilitating B. collecting C. damaging D. polishing
48. According to the passage, adding poisoned data might ____________.
A. increase the accuracy of returned information
B. cause users to forget the prompt key words
C. interfere with the training of generative AI
D. discriminate against great masterpieces
49. What can be inferred from the last two paragraphs?
A. Data poisoning is somehow justified to direct attention to human rights.
B. Computer scientists have learned to respect the copyright of most artists.
C. Nightshade is being abused by human rights activists to recognize faces.
D. The issue of technological governance has aroused the lawyers’ interest.
50. Which of the following might be the best title of the passage?
A. Data Poisoning: Government Empowering Citizens to Protect Themselves
B. Data Poisoning: Addressing Facial Recognition Issues Among Artists
C. Data Poisoning: Risks and Rewards of Generative AI Data Training
D. Data Poisoning: Restricting Innovation or Empowering Artists
D
Have you ever come out of a steamy hot shower and tried to look at your reflection in the mirror when it's completely steamed and fogged up? I often think that is how we tend to view our beauty—through fogged up mirrors. We are seeing ourselves but the picture isn't exactly clear! The mirrors have been fogged up through different life experiences and memories as we have grown up, and now blend together to form our own definition of our beauty.
The first mirror is formed as a young child and is often based on what was said about us from our parents and those around us. I remember being told that I was a cute child, so that when I got a little older and was around six or seven and another child tried to tell me I was ugly—everything within me rose up against the statement because my self-belief in what my parents had said stood strong.
The second mirror is the mirror of adolescence, those formative years when we are pushed into the big wild world and out of the protection of home. As a teenager I went to a boarding school, and I was one of the only two black people in the entire school. Children being naturally curious, I felt like I was asked a million and one different questions about both my hair and skin tone—and I don't think there has ever been a time when I have been more acutely aware of my appearance, which in turn opened up the door for me to question how I looked and to thankfully embrace my differences.
The final mirror comes from socially constructed ideas of beauty. We are often faced with numerous images in the media, popular culture, society, peers and social media, which can create a false ideal of beauty in our eyes. We tend to compare ourselves to those ideals and use it as some sort of margin(差值) of measurement.
However, real beauty comes from within. It is acceptance of yourself, perceived flaws and all. You are a masterpiece, a unique blend of genes and life experiences. It's essential to appreciate yourself like any other work of art or natural wonder, without judgement. Maybe it's time to create a fourth mirror, a new mirror that is wiped clean and is minus the fog of comparisons, accusations, judgments and expectations.
51. What do the fogged-up mirrors represent according to the first paragraph?
A. The difficulties of seeing oneself in the mirror. B. The various sources of beauty standards.
C. The unclear perceptions of one's beauty. D. The life experiences and memories.
52. How did the author react when someone called her ugly?
A. She felt embarrassed.B. She completely denied it.
C. She sought comfort from her parents.
D. She questioned what her parents had said.
53. What can we learn about social constructed ideas of beauty?
A. They push teens out of home protection.
B. They arouse acute awareness of one's appearance.
C. They may mislead people's idea of beauty.
D. They are the exact measurement of beauty.
54. What does the author suggest as a possible fourth mirror?
A. A mirror not affected by external factors.
B. A mirror going against society's expectations.
C. A mirror reflecting one's childhood experiences.
D. A mirror showing the beauty ideals from social media.
55. The passage is mainly written to tell us that we should .
A. bring happiness to those around us
B. keep our resolve despite obstacles
C. change ourselves to achieve an ideal
D. embrace our real inner beauty

阅读下面的短文,请根据短文后的要求答题。
Meet Mahdi Gilbert, the 25-year-old Canadian magician making waves in the world of
magic. He practices card manipulation (握牌手法) and sleight of hand (敏捷手法), a common
skill set for a magician, but what makes him different is his lack of hands.
Standing at four feet and six inches, Gilbert’s left arm stops at the elbow, and he has an appendage (附肢) on his right arm. Gilbert was forced to reinvent magic for himself, individually recreating all of the techniques used in his mind. Despite his lack of access to information about magic, having never visited any magic stores, or read any magic books, Gilbert confidently told his high school guidance teacher, “I’m going to be a magician.” She asked, “Do you do magic now?” to which he replied “Not yet. But I will.”
Mahdi began seeking out magicians online and on television as a teenager, and soon became a follower of David Blaine. When he was sixteen, Gilbert decided to move away from mental‑
based magic toward more magical tricks. He bought a deck of cards and a book on card manipulation, but he didn’t tell anyone what he was doing. Eventually, he mastered shuffling (洗牌) and then began to master different magical tricks in more complex ways.
He began to make connections with other magicians through magic shops and his reputation began to mount. In March, Gilbert attended Magic-Con, a magic conference in San Diego, where many famous magicians were in attendance, including David Blaine. Gilbert quickly became the talk of the conference, and his reputation took off. In the seven years since that Magic-Con, Gilbert has gone on to appear on television shows and has traveled to and performed in 18 countries.

I'm thrilled to receive your email. Knowing that you are interested in the themed activity Embrace Yourself, Grow Positively, I’m writing to share detailed information with you, hoping it can be of great help to you.
The mental-health activity was held on the playground of our school last week, aiming to relieve students’ academic pressure and guide us to develop a positive attitude towards life. The whole activity was well-organized and rich in content. At the beginning, we participated in relaxing group interactive games, through which we let go of negative emotions, built closer friendship and shared our inner worries and feelings openly. What’s more impressive is the mental-health lecture delivered by a professional psychological expert. He analyzed common teenage pressure problems, taught us practical ways to manage anxiety and self-doubt, and gave targeted on-the-spot guidance to students who were troubled by study stress and mood swings.
The activity was warmly welcomed by all participants. Most students felt greatly relieved and more confident after experiencing the event. It truly helped us realize that accepting ourselves bravely and dealing with negative emotions properly is essential to our growth.
Looking forward to your reply.
