I knew that my first day of high school would be challenging. There would be higher expectations than middle school and the teachers would be stricter. I missed my classmates a lot, hoping this year would be a good year.
On Monday morning, I was preparing for my first day of high school. My backpack was filled with materials I needed, such as pencils, notebooks and a binder. I walked into the school feeling nervous. Even though I had walked through school gates every day in middle school, this felt different.
According to the curriculum schedule (课程表), my first class was math. The math teacher was actually very nice and I liked her from the start. Then came the next three classes, which made me feel it was not so difficult to study in high school.
After lunch, I had a biology class. While I was waiting for the teacher in my seat, my friend from middle school walked in and sat next to me. It made me feel good to know that I knew someone in this class. My biology teacher gave us some advice about high school—stay organized and focused.
I knew this year was going to be a different year. Realizing that I was growing up to be an adult, I set some goals in my mind. Clearly, the first day of high school was not bad. I was happy with most of my teachers, classmates and classes. I felt I was ready to head towards a successful future.
41. How did the author feel when walking into the high school?
A. worried. B. happy. C. sad. D. amazed.
42. What does paragraph 3 mainly talk about?

B. The author’s morning classes experience.
C. Ways to get used to high school life.
D. Differences between middle and high school.
43. Why did the author feel good in the biology class?
A. The biology teacher offered useful advice.
B. The classroom environment was quite comfortable.
C. A former middle school classmate appeared in class.
D. Biology turned out much easier than expected.
44. What does the underlined word “focused” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Being willing to make friends
B. Paying full attention to one’s work
C. Being ready to accept changes
D. Having courage to face failures
45. What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A. The author is quite satisfied with every teacher.
B. High school life has completely removed the author’s worries.
C. The author is prepared for the coming high school challenges.
D. The author has already achieved most of his personal goals
C
Dogs wag (摇摆) their tails in different directions depending on whether they are excited and wanting to move forward or threatened and thinking of moving back, a study has found.
Researchers in Italy examined the tail wagging behaviour of 30 dogs, catching their responses to a range of stimuli (刺激物) with video cameras. To conduct the study they chose 15 male dogs and 15 female ones aged between one and six years. The dogs were all family pets whose owners had allowed them to take part in the experiment at Bari University. The dogs were placed in a large wooden box with an opening at the front to allow for them to view various stimuli. They were tested one at a time.
The researchers led by Professor Giorgio Vallortigara of the University of Trieste found that when the dogs were shown their owners — a positive experience — their tails wagged energetically to the right side. When they were shown an unfamiliar human they wagged to the right, but with somewhat less enthusiasm. The appearance of a cat again caused a right-hand side wag, although with less intensity again. The appearance of a large unfamiliar dog, similar to a German shepherd, changed the direction of tail wagging to the left. Researchers supposed the dog was thinking of moving back. When the dogs were not shown any stimuli they tended to wag their tails to the left, suggesting they preferred company. While the changes in the tail wagging were not easily noticed without the aid of video, it was thought that the findings could help people judge the mood of dogs. Computer and video systems, for example, could be used by professional dog trainers to determine the mood of dogs that they were required to approach.
46.The video cameras were used to catch the dogs’ responses because ________.
A.it was easier to catch the dogs’ response changes in the tail wagging
B.the dogs were put in the wooden boxes and tested one at a time
C.they enabled the dogs’ owners to know about their dogs’ habit
D.the dogs wagged their tails in different directions when they were in different moods
47.The underlined word “intensity” in the passage means ________.
A.surprise B.worry C.hate D.excitement
48.When there are no stimuli, a dog will ________.
A.wag to the right B.wag to the left
C.not wag at all D.wag to the left and then to the right
49.The underlined word “they” refers to ________.
A.the trainers B.the dogs
C.the systems D.the researchers
50.The purpose of doing the experiment is ________.
A.to help people judge the feelings of dogs
B.to train dogs for their owners
C.to help dogs find company
D.to help people choose their pet dogs

Roy Austin first experienced an African adventure in 2018. All he wanted to do was get close to some African wildlife. Although Roy did realize this dream, he found something even more meaningful in Africa.
Roy spent time in many countries throughout East Africa. He was most interested in the people of rural (农村的) Kenya, especially people of the Amboseli Primary and Secondary School.
During his stay, Roy became friends with several students and teachers at the school. He was deeply touched by their positive attitude, even though it was hard for them to get books and other school supplies. Even finding basic stationery (文具) was a challenge, not to mention the lack of school buildings.
In rural Kenya, school buildings are not built by the government. Students, their parents, and teachers find materials and build the schools themselves, or they have to raise money to get builders' help. Without schools, buildings like libraries and classrooms are just dreams. The students and teachers of the schools very much wanted a library or at least some books to read.
After returning home to South Carolina in the United States, the Kenyan students' yearning for something as seemingly "basic" as books to read still worried Roy. He decided to do whatever he could to help these children. So he started the organization Libraries for Kids International.
Since it was started, Roy has shipped over 11,000 books to 11 schools in African countries, including Kenya and Tanzania. To keep costs down, he uses the post office to send the books instead of a carrier like FedEx. The organization has helped to supply these schools with much-needed books, which brought Roy much happiness. He plans to continue shipping books to Africa.
