In Sichuan Province,long-time resident French artist Vincent Cazeneuve,is
integrating traditional Chinese lacquerware (skills with techniques taken from
Western modern art into his creations.
Born in Toulouse,Vincent has been living in southwest China for more than a
decade. With the influence of French artists Jean Dunand and Gaston Suisse, his journey
to unravel the secrets of Chinese lacquerware and his fascination for lacquer art started."I
studied their artworks and often wondered why they used Chinese lacquer. In those days,
lacquer could not be found in France.said the artist.
Native to Asia, lacquer trees are planted and tapped for their liquid. It is almost
impossible to find lacquer trees in Europe. So,instead of continually transporting lacquer
back to France,Vincent chose to send himself to China.
Having explored his connections with lacquer over the years, the artist also learned a
range of techniques, which he integrated into his own artworks. To dive deep into the art
of lacquerware,Vincent traveled to Liangshan Yi Autonomous Prefecture (in
Sichuan Province, where lacquer craftsmanship (is famous. In fact,he actually met
two lacquerware craftsmen, who taught him almost everything they knew.
"I used to know about lacquerware of Yi just by looking at it.But I had never seen the
Yi people before.I have never heard their language.I've never seen their villages. It's only
when I came here that I felt the power of their culture.said Vincent.
This field trip gave the artist new inspiration for his exhibition. After seeing Vincent's
exhibition,Liu Guanzhong,a professor at the School of Fine Arts of Tsinghua University
said,"What he presents is China in his eyes.Vincent has explored a path:the ideas of a
modern artist, but rooting the ancient skills in modern life.He finds new soil for an old
seed to bloom into a new flower.

With its upcoming scientific research center in Uzbekistan,Zaha Hadid Architects
has taken a low-tech approach to maintaining a comfortable temperature.The eye-catching
building will feature a clever passive cooling system inspired by traditional local
architecture.
Named after an important 15th Century poet, author and statesman, the Alisher
Navoi International Scientific Research Center will be defined by large curvy arches
and large glass windows. Its overall form is similar to the traditional wind
catching towers of Middle Eastern architecture that have been used for centuries to help
reduce the desert heat.
Its curvy supporting arches, which are being built from local brick, are designed as
hollow (structures with openings that draw the wind into the building. In the
hottest summer months, this system will be supported by some electric fans to cool the
air before it enters the structure.
When it's not windy, the hollow arched structures will also naturally create a
chimney (effect, allowing warmer air to escape through the openings at the top of
each arch. This works because warm air naturally rises and escapes, creating a pressure
difference that in turn draws in cooler air from lower levels and promotes air cycle
throughout the building.Recent Stirling Prize winner New Library,Magdalene College
also used the technique.
"These cooling principles are enhanced by the day-night cycle, removing warmer air
while trapping cooler air below,"explains Zaha Hadid Architects."Coupled with high heat
mass of the center's structure, the conditions of comfort can be maintained with minimal
energy consumption.Skylights bring natural light into the heart of the center while deep
roof overhangs provide its wall with effective shading in summer yet permit winter sun
into the building to warm the inside.
Thanks to its passive design, the inside of the research center will be comfortable to
stay in.With 13 permanent exhibition halls,measuring 23,000 sqm,it will encourage
dialogue between literary education, research and the performing arts.
28.What is special about Alisher Navoi International Scientific Research Center?
A.Its temperature-controlling method.B.Its original design by a famous poet.
C.Its traditional wind catching towers.D.Its high-technology cooling system.
29.What role do the hollow supporting arches play in the building?
A.They support the weight of the structure.
B.They allow wind in to cool the air inside.
C.They create a visually appealing beauty.
D.They trap heat to warm the building in winter.
30.Why is New Library of Magdalene College mentioned in Paragraph 4?
A.To compare different design philosophies.
B.To explain the origin of the technique.
单元过关(九)英语第4页(共8页)
C.To show the technique's wide application.
D.To get the research center well-known.
31.What does Zaha Hadid Architects think of the passive cooling system?
A.It requires very little energy.
B.It is a mixed-tech cooling design.
C.It integrates the beauty of old and new.
D.It is better than that of traditional architecture.

In the risky world of nuclear arms control,Princeton student Lepowsky is exploring
how robots can make inspections more accurate and acceptable to host nations worried
about invasive (traditional methods. His latest research has led to a robot
performing inspections without saving sensitive information.
"The host nation likely won't want a human inspector poking their nose around,
said Lepowsky."But even a robot has memory and sensors acquiring data. The goal is to
have high-confidence inspections without the robot saving information. For example, the
robot would not save radiation measurements or create floor plans of sensitive areas.
The new prototype (is built on an iRobot Create 3 platform,an educational
robot.Robots offer advantages over human inspectors:they can tolerate higher radiation
levels, are more consistent, and can be cheaper. They also can be programmed to
generate trust, such as not using cameras to avoid seeing unwanted details. The idea for
the robot started with Lepowsky's adviser,Glaser, who was curious about creating a
"forgetful robot"that could perform highly accurate nuclear arms inspections but forget
everything afterward. This led to an even more interesting idea:"Rather than forgetting,
we're not even remembering in the first place,Lepowsky said.He believes this feature
can reassure hosts concerned about privacy.
Lepowsky likes the interdisciplinary nature of his work-drawing on both his robotics
and policy expertise-and he likes that it requires a breadth of knowledge, not just depth.
He values that his research is grounded in real-life applications for global security and
nuclear nonproliferation(防扩散).
Predicting when the robot might be used in the field is difficult."It's easy to say,
today,it's not very realistic, but you have to be ready for if and when it becomes
possible,"said Lepowsky.Research into this problem is very active.Because arms control
is changing, the specific objectives of future agreements are hard to predict."But we can
hope they will be positive, and we need to be ready, technically.
32.In which aspect is Lepowsky's robot different from human inspectors?
A.Data security.
B.Memory capacity.
C.Social acceptance.
D.User friendliness.
33.What is said about the robot in Paragraph 3?
A.Its accurate system.
B.Its privacy risks.
C.Its design mechanism
D.Its operational problems.
34.What does Lepowsky like about his work?
A.Scientific research data.
B.Real-time technical cooperation.
C.In-depth theoretical studies.
D.Integrated knowledge across fields.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Princeton's "Forgetful"Robots in Global Security
B.No-Memory Robots:The Future of Nuclear Checks?
C.Nuclear Arms Control:Robots or Human Inspectors?
D.Lepowsky's "Curious"Robots for Radiation Detection

Tree climbing is dead. What was once a part of childhood is now disappearing. We
might want to blame it on the fact that childhood has headed indoors or on parents'and
teachers'safety concerns.
36 One-quarter of kids have never climbed a tree. Many schools ban the activity,
fearful of the risk of injury to children. Many parks, gardens, zoos, communities and
institutions will hand you a fine if you're caught climbing a tree.
Why should we care about tree climbing?Isn't it,after all,a risky activity that will
end up with a visit to the ER or worse?37.
In 2016,researchers from the University of Phoenix surveyed 1,600 parents who let
their children climb trees.Of the participants that responded to the survey question,
94.84%reported that their child scraped (a knee, elbow,or skin as a result of
climbing a tree,and less than 2%reported a broken bone.
38,but he/she can just as easily fall off the playground monkey bars,a bunk
bed,or a bike-all of which are statistically more dangerous to your child than a tree.
And here's the best news.39.The same University of Phoenix researchers found
that parents of tree-climbing kids felt that climbing trees encouraged adventure,
creativity, and inspiration in their kids. These parents reported that tree climbing
improved their child's problem-solving skills and a sense of self-efficacy(自我效能)and
risk negotiation. And they cited many physical benefits, such as increased strength,
flexibility,and better spatial awareness.
One survey respondent wrote that tree climbing teaches her son to trust and believe
in his whole body's abilities.40,such as building confidence, helping each other,
perseverance,freedom,sharing,peace,empowering,social activity and self-
awareness,etc.
A.Your child could suffer a physical injury
B.Actually, the statistics tell a different story
C.Parents also allow tree climbing for emotional benefits
D.The truth is that kids just don't climb trees anymore
E.Climbing trees is great for your kid physically and emotionally
F.They can make informed decisions about the risks that they take
G.Climbing trees and falling out of them are both part of growing up

Before I thought I needed to get rid of my Southern accent,I was proud of my
heritage. As a child, there was no sound I loved more than my grandmother's accent:
thick, sweet, warm. She used to tell me,"Girl, don't forget where you come from.My
own voice reflected my family's past and present-part northern Mississippi, part
Tennessee delta,all southern.
As I grew up,I began to realize that outside of our region, southerners were often
regarded as uncultured and uneducated, ignorant and narrow-minded.I was ready to leave
behind my tiny town and started a new life in some far-off big cities.I thought I would
have to talk less country. So I killed a piece of myself.I was ashamed of it,but I was more
ashamed that I tried to kill that part of someone else.
I met Emily in college, who was also a southerner. She worked for the student
newspaper, where I spent most of my waking hours, and we became friends.Unlike me,
she accepted her roots.
Emily was two years younger.I knew she cared about my opinion.I advised her to be
more like me,abandoning her accent.During my senior year,Emily and I participated in a
speech contest. After Emily,it was my turn, but I was fully confident about my accent.I
took it upon myself to "help"Emily prepare for it,concentrating on training her
pronunciation.
“I,”I said,firmly.
"Ahye,"Emily responded, helplessly.I could tell she tried her best to do this, but
she failed.Frustrated, she said,"I quit.I don't think I have to get rid of my accent for the
presentation. If they want to laugh,so be it!"
I had told myself I was helping her.Now I was not sure.
