Shane Gross is from Saskatchewan,Canada,a province far away from the sea,so his
first underwater experiences were in a cold, green lake with a disposable film camera.
Despite this,he's always been fascinated by the ocean, especially sharks, and watched
Jaws countless times. After backpacking through Australia in 2009 and diving along the
way,he decided to pursue his passion seriously. In 2011,he moved to the Bahamas to
work as a dive instructor, which allowed him to spend more time in the water and
improve his photography skills.
In 2017,while diving at one of their regular spots,"Sea Garden",Gross and his
girlfriend encountered a turtle ()They were deeply upset at the terrible scene-the
turtle was trapped, struggling, and ultimately dying.Realizing there was nothing they
could do to save it,Gross removed the abandoned fishing line wrapped around the turtle
and documented the moment. His photograph later won first place in the conservation
category of the 2019 International Ocean Art Underwater Photo Competition, bringing
attention to the problem of sea waste that often goes unseen.
When asked about his approach to creating remarkable underwater photography,
Shane Gross advises underwater photographers to go beyond just one image. He
encourages them to document the entire scene they're passionate about, even if it means
taking some shots above the water.Once you have a story to tell, create a shot list and
keep shooting until you have recorded it fully.
For Shane, spending time in the ocean is deeply fulfilling..“I live a marine(海¥的)
lifestyle,"he says."But most people don't share this connection."To bridge this gap,he
created Bahamas Underwater,a book combining stories and vivid imagery to introduce
people to marine ecosystems and their wonders.Shane recommends that taking the time to
admire the breathtaking views of the ocean should be the initial step toward creating
meaningful change-a shift from indifference to active care.
24.What can we learn about Shane Gross from Paragraph 1?
A.He grew up in the coastal area.
B.He longed to be a dive instructor.
C.He followed his childhood passion.
D.He did academic research on sharks.
25.Why did Shane take a photo of the sea turtle?
A.To criticize overfishing.
B.To protect natural habitats.
C.To save the injured animal.
D.To highlight marine pollution.

We all know that being overweight is not great for your health-it's linked to
metabolic(新陈代谢的)diseases like diabetes and cardiovascular(心血管的)problems.
But weighing yourself won't tell you all you need to know about your disease risk.A
friend of mine is a super-fit marathon runner. She's all lean muscle. And yet according to
her body mass index(BMI),which is a measure of weight relative to height, she's
overweight.Which is frankly ridiculous. The BMI is deficient. So what should we use
instead?
First, let's talk about fat-the most demonized of all body components.Fat is stored
in adipose tissue(胎肪组织),which has some really important roles. It conserves energy,
maintains our body temperature, and serves as a protective layer for our organs. It also
produces a whole host of important substances, from hormones that control our appetite
to chemicals that influence the way our immune systems work.
However, not all fat is equal. It's the visceral fat-the type surrounding your
organs-that is thought to be more harmful to your health,if there's too much of it.
Having more visceral fat has been linked to an increased risk of diabetes and
cardiovascular disease.(That relationship isn't straightforward either,though;studies
have shown that removing this "excess"fat doesn't improve metabolic health.)Either
way, having a good idea of how much fat is in your body, and where it is,would be
valuable. It might at least give us some idea of our risk of metabolic disorders. There are
quite a few different ways of measuring this.
BMI is the most widely adopted. It's the official measure the World Health
Organization uses to define overweight and obesity.Unfortunately,it doesn't tell you very
much about the fat in your body or how it corresponds to your health. After all, your body
weight includes your bones, muscles, blood, and everything else, not just your fat.
Instead,Emma Borgeson, who studies cardiometabolic disease at Aarhus University in
Denmark, and her colleagues recommend the SAD measure,a measure of the size of a
person's belly from back to front.
28.What does the underlined word "deficient"in Paragraph 1 mean?
A.Faulty.
B.Accurate.
C.Essential.
D.Worthless.
29.What does Paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A.The types of fat.
B.The dangers of fat.
C.The functions of fat.
D.The composition of fat.
30.What can be inferred about the visceral fat?
A.It is the most harmful fat in the body.
B.Too much of it may lead to health issues.
C.It is closely related to metabolic disorders.
D.Removing it can lower the risk of diseases.
31.What might be discussed in the following paragraphs?
A.The comparison between the SAD and other measures.
B.The advantages of using the BMI over other measures.
C.Personal experiences about the weight loss journeys.
D.Detailed explanations of the alternative method SAD.

The Great Lakes are a significant source of freshwater, and their formation can be
traced back to an ancient geological phenomenon that occurred about 300 million years
ago.New research reveals that the Cape Verde hotspot,an intense heat source beneath
the Earth's crust ()played a key role in shaping the region long before glaciers
carved out the lakes during the Ice Age.Today, this hotspot is located beneath the Cape
Verde Islands in the Atlantic Ocean, but millions of years ago,it was positioned beneath
North America.
The American Geophysical Union (AGU)noted that this hotspot caused the crust
under the future Great Lakes to heat, stretch, and sink over tens of millions of years.
These changes created depressions that glaciers later deepened and filled with water
around 20,000 years ago.
A team led by seismologist(地震学家)Aibing Li discovered this connection through
seismic wave studies. They observed directional variations in wave speeds, indicating crust
deformation.Their research showed that about 300 million years ago,the Cape Verde
hotspot was positioned beneath Lake Superior and later shifted under Lakes Huron and
Erie before moving into the Atlantic around 170 million years ago.
The study explains how hotspots, typically associated with volcanic activity, can
shape landscapes without creating surface volcanoes. The Great Meteor hotspot, another
ancient heat source, left a clearer trail of volcanic rocks in North America. However,
evidence of the Cape Verde hotspot's influence was hidden beneath layers of crust.
Moreover, this discovery raises new questions about the formation of other large
lakes worldwide.Researchers are now investigating whether hotspots have contributed to
the creation of other lakes by thinning the Earth's crust and forming low-lying areas. This
research not only solves a long-standing mystery about the Great Lakes but also opens
new avenues for studying how ancient geological forces continue shaping the world we live
in today.
32.What caused the crust under the Great Lakes to change?
A.Glacial movement.
B.Volcanic eruptions.
C.The Cape Verde hotspot.
D.The Great Meteor hotspot.
33.What can be inferred about the Cape Verde hotspot?
A.It is still under North America.
B.It deepened the existing lakes.
C.It caused visible volcanic rocks.
D.It moved gradually over millions of years.
34.What might researchers explore next based on the study?
A.How glaciers formed other lakes.
B.Whether hotspots shaped other lakes.
C.The impact of volcanoes on freshwater.
D.The history of the Great Meteor hotspot.
35.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Hotspots shape the Earth's crust
B.Seismic studies help detect crust changes
C.Volcanoes are responsible for the Great Lakes
D.New research explains the Great Lakes formation

You are bound to face some challenges in life as situations around you change. Here
are some effective tools to help you master change.
单元过关(八)英语第5页(共8页)
Keep things in perspective.
Being able to step back and observe each situation within the context of the "bigger
picture"of your life helps you process your feelings about the importance of a certain
event or situation.Learning to keep things in a healthy perspective may help reduce
distraction and moderate emotional responses.36
Fully assess the situation before you take action.
Understand all of your options before you do anything.Really think it through.37
Otherwise, you'll be wasting your time and energy trying to figure things out instead of
maintaining a clear focus for handling and achieving your desired goal.
Maintain realistic expectations.
Situations can change,so understand that things don't always work out as you
planned. In other words,be flexible about the outcome.38 Over time, you'll be able
to course-correct by making other decisions to help guide you on your way to the outcome
you originally wanted.
39
This is an important point. When you're young and have little life experience, you
may feel confused and scared about making changes and facing new situations.40 But
life is about change.A situation that's fine for one specific time in your life may not be
right or appropriate for another time.Knowing how you respond to change and what to
look out for emotionally, psychologically and physically is essential to gaining comfort
when handling new situations.
A.Don't try to force an outcome.
B.Become familiar with how you respond to change.
C.It's natural to fear change and leave your comfort zone.
D.This keeps you focused on the specific situation at hand.
E.Even if the change falls short of your expectation, that's OK.
F.View each situation as a new opportunity rather than a barrier.
G.This way,you simplify your efforts and can concentrate on your aim.

For years,my family hadn't had a proper vacation, our lives consumed by busy
schedules. This year,I was determined to plan a perfect getaway. My research led me to
The Manor,a grand,historic hotel.As I studied a local tourist brochure,I saw it listed
the hotel's main attractions-an award-winning restaurant and a grand lighthouse.Simple
activities like walking coastal paths and searching for unique sea glass were also
mentioned. For this special vacation,I focused only on what I considered the best
experiences.A simple walk on the beach? We could do that anywhere.I wanted the
lighthouse climb and the luxury of a fancy dinner.
Just before we left,my father gave me a hug."Remember,he said softly,"we
can't control the circumstances, but we can always choose our attitude."I thought of how
he always managed to turn rainy days into opportunities for simple games, finding joy no
matter what.I smiled, but confident in my mind that our trip would be so perfect that we
would never need his wisdom.
Unfortunately, our journey began with an unexpected storm.A steady, cold rain
poured down so heavily that we could barely see the landscape outside our car.Arriving at
the hotel, our hopes for an afternoon swim were greeted by a sign on the locked pool
door:“Closed for Renovation(翻修)”.Our next thought,.a drink at the hotel bar,was
met with another sign:"Closed on Mondays".Defeated,we went to bed early, pinning
all our remaining hopes on visiting the lighthouse the next morning.
The following day,the sky was still gray and cold, but at least the rain had softened.
We drove to the lighthouse, our spirits lifting as we saw the grand structure rising before
us.From the parking lot,we could see a small, unmarked path winding through the tall
grass into the distance, but our focus was entirely on the lighthouse."The view from the
top will be amazing!"I shouted.I ran from the car to the gate, ready to start the climb.
My heart sank as I read the large, metal sign posted there:CLOSED FOR
RENOVATIONS.

I'd certainly recommended as a profession not because it's popular nor because it's a well pay job. Generally, IT isn't, but rather because IT provides you with many opportunities to come up with new ideas and create exciting products. People get jobs in the computer games industry after receiving degrees in all sorts of subjects. Of course, if you have a course in computer that will give you an advantage, but it's certainly not necessary. I myself graduated in physics and colleagues of mine did history, engineering and english. The degree itself is less important than the love for the job. IT goes without saying that everyone who joins the industry enjoys playing games. My parents always told me I spent far too much time on them, so much that they suggested I put IT to good use and apply for work in the industry. My uncle sent me the name of someone he knew at a major game company, so I decide there first. I was lucky enough to get taken on. I didn't have the skills to become a technical programmer, of course, and started as a game tester that taught me a huge amount. And after six months, I was able to do something more demanding. Now i'm given a position in the research department. I'm quite satisfied with my job. I'm here today to talk to you about working in computer gaming.
