At Pearson International Airport,Canada's largest and busiest airport,my
responsibility is to ensure the smooth transit of connecting passengers. This task involves
not only answering questions about boarding gates and departure times but also
addressing the various challenges that arise during their layovers ()After long,non-
stop flights, these travelers are often tired and hungry, seeking rest in the form of coffee,
food, and a quiet lounge(休息室),but instead, they face confusion and stress while
waiting for their luggage and boarding their next flight. My role is to keep them calm and
informed during this stressful time.
The lounge,like a pressure cooker,is a small world of human emotions,where
stress can rise quickly. The connecting passengers, fully aware of time limits, are usually
in a rush, their stress levels heightened by the fear of missing their flights. Some express
their frustrations loudly, while others are reduced to tears,as the stress of travel
overshadows their excitement.
In such moments, the core of our role becomes one of empathy ()-putting
ourselves in the shoes of our passengers and offering help wherever possible. If their flight
is about to leave,we tell them to run to their gate, saying,"Run!Run!"Sometimes,I
even run with them, turning the airport into a race against time.
Given the short-lived nature of our interactions, briefness is the standard.Yet,even
within these brief encounters,we strive to build connections.A simple "Ni hao"to
Chinese passengers or a cheerful "Hola"to Spanish-speaking travelers can bring a smile to
an otherwise preoccupied stranger.
The airport, far from being a dull place,is a stage where the full range of human
emotions is vividly displayed:the sadness of tearful goodbyes, the joy of family reunions,
the anxiety of endless lines, and the disappointment of missed connections. In these
moments,I am reminded that, regardless of our origins,we are united in our ability to
understand and our willingness to help. Here,we are family.
24.What is the author's main role?
A.Keeping the airport quiet.
B.Managing airport lounges.
C.Ensuring flights leave on time.
D.Assisting passengers with their needs.

单元过关(五)英语第3页(共8页)
25.Why is the lounge compared to a pressure cooker?
A.It's overcrowded and dirty.
B.It's physically hot and uncomfortable.
C.Conflicts happen frequently.
D.Passengers worry about missing flights.
26.What can be inferred about the author's interactions with passengers?
A.They are simple and dull.
B.They are short but meaningful.
C.They are long but personal.
D.They are formal and structured.
27.What does the author want to stress in the last paragraph?
A.Cultural difference is a barrier to understanding.
B.Our shared capacity for empathy bonds us together.
C.Our emotions greatly affect our social interactions.
D.Supporting each other is the basis of family relation.
C
Quick:what's your best friend's phone number?Don't feel bad if you couldn't
answer off the top of your head. You have no reason to commit phone numbers to
memory:it's just there in your phone.Or perhaps you once had a phone book to store
them.In either case,an object does the remembering for you.
“Prosthetic memory”(人工记f忆)is nothing new.Writing itself has been a means of
storing information.Yet the information revolution has generated more data than ever
before. We are flooded with information. We're creating more of it,and keeping more of
it.The storage capacity of the human brain has since been eclipsed. No wonder, then, that
we're increasingly dependent on memory prostheses, from libraries to smartphones.
Not everyone thinks this trend in external memory is good.Historically, memory
prostheses were expensive. As technologies such as printing and photography become
more affordable, sharing experiences with others is easier than ever.So every breakfast,
every sunset, every encounter with a cat finds its way on to social media. And here comes
the worry. When we devote ourselves to capturing and sharing the world in this way,
something immensely valuable is lost;when recording so much of our lives,we're
forgetting to actually live them.We put something between ourselves and the world-a
camera-instead of just being in the moment, and so disconnect ourselves from
experience.
But is our social media-driven transformation wholly bad?If we're still creating and
sharing memories like this, perhaps this is because we've not had sufficient time to learn
how to do these things without thinking about what we're doing. It is easy to ignore that
the mass social media era is less than a decade old. That's just a short blink (in
human history, yet it has totally changed how we live.I suspect we're not far off from
being directly faced with experience yet with the ability to share experience in ways less
bounded by geography and time. After all, technology can do what our fragile meat-
computers can't:protect all the moments of a life that would otherwise be lost.
28.What can be inferred from Paragraph 1?
A.Technology weakens our brains.
B.We rely more on tools to memorize.
C.We are burdened with phone numbers.
D.Technology distances us from our friends.
29.What does the underlined word "eclipsed"in Paragraph 2 mean?
A.Improved.
B.Outperformed.C.Restricted.
D.Undervalued.
30.What negative effect does online sharing bring about?
A.An overflow of posts.
B.High cost of digital devices.
C.Addiction to the virtual world.
D.Disregard for authentic experience.
单元过关(五)英语第4页(共8页)
31.What does the author advise us to do in the last paragraph?
A.Have faith in human brains.
B.Take time to adapt to digital age.
C.Quicken the pace of development.
D.Make efforts to enhance memory.

To determine the type and severity of a cancer, scientists usually analyze thin slices
of a tumor (under a microscope. But to tell how the tumor is treated, scientists
must perform genetic sequencing (of the RNA isolated from the tumor,a process
that can take weeks and costs thousands of dollars.
But now,Stanford Medicine researchers have developed an artificial intelligence-
powered computational program that can predict the activity of thousands of genes within
tumor cells. The tool was created using data from more than 7000 diverse tumor samples.
The team showed that it could be used routinely to predict genetic variations in breast
cancers and to predict patient outcomes.
"This kind of software could be used to quickly identify gene signatures in patients'
tumors, speeding up clinical (decision-making and saving the health care system
thousands of dollars,"said Olivier Gevaert,PhD.
The researchers began with 7584 cancer biopsies (from 16 different cancer
types. Each biopsy had been sliced into thin sections and prepared. After the researchers
integrated their new cancer biopsies as well as other datasets, including images from
thousands of healthy cells, the AI program-which they named SEQUOIA-was able to
predict the expression patterns of more than 15,000 different genes from the stained
images.
To test the effect of SEQUOIA for clinical decision-making,Gevaert and his
colleagues identified breast cancer genes that the model could accurately predict the
expression of and that are already used in commercial breast cancer genomic tests.
The Al model can't yet be used in a clinical setting, but Gevaert said his team is
studying its potential applications. In the future,he said,SEQUOIA could reduce the
need for expensive gene expression tests."We've shown how useful this could be for
breast cancer, and we can now use it for all cancers,he said."It's a whole new source of
data that we didn't have before.
32.How do scientists usually find out the treatment of a tumor?
A.By analyzing its thin slices.
B.By using a computational program.
C.By performing genetic sequencing.
D.By referring to routinely collected data.
33.What can we know about SEQUOIA from the passage?
A.It has been widely used.
B.It can predict all genes'activity.
C.It has reduced the cost of gene tests.
D.It's likely to lessen the requirement for costly genetic tests.
34.What did Gevaert think of the future of the AI model?
A.Potential.
B.Useless.
C.Changeable.
D.Ambiguous.
35.What is the main idea of the passage?
A.A new tool for analyzing tumor slices.
B.An AI tool to predict tumor gene activity.
C.An attempt to perform original genetic sequencing.
D.AI technology to revolutionize the treatment of cancer.

The date had been circled on my calendar for months-Friday 30 December.Mum
was coming to pick me up from university and bring me home for the New Year
celebrations.I loved every second of university life, but I couldn't wait to go home. There
was nothing that made me happier than the thought of the celebrations with my family.
Our small celebrations were the same every year.Mum,Dad,my younger brother
Ollie and I all dressed up and created a special meal. Then we sat down to dinner and
enjoyed it together, chatting happily. After that,we sat in front of the TV until bedtime.
The call came at 10 am that Friday.I was dressed and packed."We're not going to
make it,"my mum said, sounding upset on the phone."Kent has been blanketed
overnight, with up to 20cm falling in three hours. We've crawled as far as Detling,
but they've closed the motorway. It's already taken us two hours. There's no way we can
get to your university.
"What am I going to do?"I was hopeless and sick with anxiety. My life was different
from that of other students.Being disabled means everything has to be organized ahead of
time-a sudden change of plan isn't an option.Even though I had my carer to help me
cook, wash and get into bed,I still missed the joy of our celebrations.
Alone in my student bedroom,I was a bit frustrated.Suddenly a picture on the wall
caught my attention. It was a picture of a family reunion filled with laughter, hugs, and
delicious food.It reminded me of the power of connection and the importance of treasuring
these moments.I decided to push aside my fears about how I would ever get home.
Although I'd travelled with my family three times in my life, travelling
independently using a wheelchair came with many challenges for me.I could imagine the
difficulty of booking assistance at every train station, getting on and off the train...So I
worked out a detailed plan, hoping everything would be fine.

1.续写词数应为150个左右;

Not long after that,a taxi took me to the
railway station.I felt a mix of excitement and
anxiety as I was on the familiar route. My heart
raced at the thought of taking this journey on my
own,but I reminded myself of the warmth and joy
waiting for me at home.Upon arriving,I quickly
located the assistance desk and explained my needs.
The staff were incredibly helpful, guiding me to the
platform and ensuring I was comfortable. The train
ride was smooth, and I found a window seat to
enjoy the snowy landscape flashing by.
A taxi,three trains,five hours and 140 miles
later,I was finally home.The moment I stepped
through the door,I was enveloped in a wave of
warmth and love.My family rushed to greet me,
their faces lighting up with joy.We shared hugs and
laughter,and I felt a strong sense of belonging.We
quickly gathered in the kitchen to prepare our
traditional meal together, the familiar scents filling
the air.As we sat down to dinner,I realized that
despite the challenges,I had made it home for New
Year celebrations.
