Since the introduction from their native Japan in the early 1900s,blossoming cherry trees
signaled seasonal change in the United States. Here's when and where to see these delicate
pink and white flowers across the country.
The National Cherry Blossom Festival

Over the past few weeks,I've been experiencing a bad fall, largely attributed to my
ADHD(多动障碍)drugs running out. This has made it challenging for me to find the
motivation to tackle daily tasks, including regular exercise.
However,a recent workout led to an epiphany:neglecting physical activity was
actually worsening my condition. It appears that engaging in physical activity could be an
effective strategy for managing my ADHD symptoms while I await a prescription refill.
After a workout,my mind feels quieter,much like when I take my medication.This
makes sense as ADHD drugs increase levels of a brain medical called noradrenaline
肾上腺素),enhancing focus,memory,and impulse control..Exercise also increases this
chemical.
While these insights are promising,I'm not ready to stop my medication.Research on
exercise and ADHD has mixed results.A 2023 review of 106 studies showed exercise
significantly improves impulse control, attention, and task-switching in young people
with ADHD.However, its impact on regulating emotions and working memory is less
pronounced, and the benefits are even less for adults. In another study,10 minutes of
exercise improved impulse control in 82 adults with ADHD but had no effect on other
symptoms.
These findings suggest that exercise has a modest effect on ADHD but highlight
additional benefits beyond physical health. The evidence is particularly strong for
depression and anxiety.A 2023 review of nearly 300 trials involving over 15,800 adults
found physical activity as effective as talk therapy and medications in reducing symptoms.
The benefit was stronger when combined with these treatments.
Exercise may also alleviate (symptoms of other mental health conditions, such
as bipolar disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder. It appears protective as well.A
2018 study of over 12 million adults found that those who exercised experienced 43
percent fewer days of poor mental health than those who didn't.The link was strongest
for team sports, cycling, and aerobic and gym activities.
I'm relieved to have found a strategy for managing my ADHD symptoms without
medication.Even though exercising is the last thing I want to do when overwhelmed,I

Texan 81-year-old good friends Ellie Hamby and Sandy Hazelip toured the world in
80 days, proving that adventure doesn't have an age limit.
Their first stop was a location challenging even many experienced travelers:the
Antarctic.Getting to the southernmost continent first required crossing the Drake
Passage, the waters between the southern tip of South America and the Antarctic's South
Shetland Islands."For almost two days,we were rocking and rolling, slipping and sliding
through the Drake Passage and we were holding onto dear life,Hamby said. The
voyage, however, faded from their mind as they set foot on the ground of the Antarctic,
fascinated by the breathtaking beauty of penguins, icebergs and glaciers.
Since that first venture, the pair have visited 18 countries across all seven continents.
And despite the challenges international travel presented, the good friends said they had
finished their trip without any argument.Though they're both independent and stubborn,
they respect each other's feelings. And what they remember the most are the people that
they met."We met some of the most wonderful, kindest, friendliest people. We just have
friends now all over the world that we love dearly,Hamby said.
The two shared a crucial piece of advice for travelers worrying about the language
barrier on their own adventures."You know, people often ask us about it,"said Hamby.
"We tell them there's one universal language, and that's the smile. We found it worked
wonders because we were often aware that English was not always spoken and that the
smile could cover all languages.
They also encouraged other older people not to let age hold them back.Aside from
some minor changes in plans, their age didn't affect their itinerary (abroad. They
said they felt confident that if they were injured during their trip, their children would
have been at peace knowing that they were doing what they absolutely wanted. And
Hazelip described 81 as the perfect age to embark on a trip."Getting older does give us a
little bit of wisdom of making decisions, she said.
28.What might the pair think of their trip to the Antaretic?
A.Brief but exciting.
B.Tough but worthwhile.
C.Interesting but fruitless.
D.Unpleasant but memorable.

Scientists are advancing brain-computer interface BCI)technology with a
breakthrough system that translates inner speech into audible words.Developed by US
researchers,this“thought decoder(解码器)”achieved74%accuracy in converting the
imagined speech of four paralyzed volunteers into sound.
Unlike earlier BCIs,which relied on brain signals from attempted speech or writing,
the new device directly interprets neural patterns linked to phonemes (speech units),
aiming to restore fluent communication for those with speech or motor disabilities.
The system works by implanting sensors in the motor cortex(运动皮层),the brain
region controlling movement, including speech. As volunteers think of words, machine
learning algorithms (analyze neural activity to identify phoneme patterns and
reconstruct sentences.Stanford neuroscientist Benyamin Meschede-Krasa explains,"If
you just have to think about speech instead of actually trying to speak,it's potentially
easier and faster.”
Researchers discovered overlapping brain signals between attempted and imagined
speech, but the system could distinguish them through probability calculations. For
example,it recognized 125,000 words by linking frequent phoneme combinations."These
patterns are a similar but smaller version of attempted speech activity,"notes Stanford's
Frank Willett, adding,"We decoded them well enough to prove the principle, but not as
well as attempted speech.
There's still a long way to go here, and the BCI often fell far short of that 74
maximum accuracy rating. However,by utilizing upgraded implant technology and
mapping more of the brain for thought cues, the researchers are confident that the system
can be quickly improved over the next few years.
Another issue to overcome is the potential for translating, logging, and speaking out
inner monologues that are intended to be kept private-not something you want in a BCI.
Safeguards like thinking of a special password to start and stop decoding could be
implemented here, the researchers suggest. This concept was trialed in the experiments
with 98 percent accuracy.
This follows other progress, such as a recent real-time thought-decoding study
(personalized to one individual)."The future of BCIs is bright,"Willett says."This gives
hope that speech BCIs may one day restore communication as fluent and natural as
conversational speech.
32.How does the new BCI system differ from earlier models?
A.It uses external sensors instead of implants.
B.It requires physical movement to generate speech.
C.It relies on brain signals from attempted writing only.
D.It directly decodes neural patterns associated with inner speech.
单元过关(三)英语第5页(共8页)
33.What can we infer from Paragraph 3?
A.Benyamin Meschede-Krasa invented the new BCI system.
B.The motor cortex is only responsible for speaking movements.
C.Machine learning plays a key role in linking brain signals to words.
D.The new BCI needs users to silently speak words to generate neural signals.
34.What privacy concern is raised about the BCI system?
A.It stores thoughts without user approval.
B.It might decode unintended private thoughts.
C.It cannot differentiate between multiple users.
D.It requires users to share mental passwords publicly.
35.What can be a suitbale title for the text?
A.BCIs:The Future of Medical Implants
B.Breakthrough in Decoding Imagined Speech
C.The Morals of Translating Inner Monologues
D.Overcoming Paralysis Through Brain Technology

I have always done exactly what I wanted. That is why I find myself on a facial
recognition website looking for a bus driver I met when I was 14.My mother and I had
come to Los Angeles for vacation. This was the first time I'd ever left Texas, and the first
time I'd been on an airplane.
I don't recall the tour, but I remember the guide and the bus driver,John. He told
great stories and, most of all,he noticed me.John talked to me as if I was my own
person, not just some star-eyed kid from a small town, but a human with thoughts and
ideas of her own. When I asked a question,he gave me a real answer-more than an
answer,an elaboration(详尽阐述).
I don't recall how we started talking.Maybe John asked what I liked,and I said
music. Before this trip,I was shy and quiet.I was bad at sports,an average student, but
good at French horn ()Still,I didn't see a clear future.
Throughout the tour,John talked to me about my musical interests and told me
about the paths and possibilities I hadn't yet been able to see.If I enjoyed playing music
enough to want to do it all the time, then why didn't I just do that?It had never occurred
to me,this sense of huge possibility, that I could just do whatever I wanted.
When the tour ended,John and I stood outside the bus and took a picture with my
camera. At home,I put that little photo in a prime spot on my wall.It encouraged me to
pursue my dream.I got into music school and music ultimately became my path.
Twenty years later,I was talking with my friend when the memory of John and that
bus tour came out of the back of my mind.
"The man literally changed the course of my life,"I said."I've always wanted to
find him.”
"You'd better get on it,then,"my friend laughed.
