A simple example goes like one, one, two, three, five, eight and so on. Why is this important? Well, it's . important because it's common in geometry and it's common in nature. For example, in plants. Actually, we see these numbers everywhere. Could you give us some specific examples? Well, we don't have time today, but I can explain more about IT in the next lesson on wednesday. 听第八段材料,回答第11至13题。Can you see that bird over there? It's in the tree staying perfectly still. It's a golden eagle, and they are extremely rare around here. I remember our teacher mentioned the bird a few days ago. Yes, I can see him through my telescope. Normally you might see one flying high in the sky as they disappear into the clouds. They are usually so far away that you can hardly see them clearly. But this one, you can see him perfectly, as he is so close. Yes, quite an interesting bird. Do you . notice how he keeps looking around? He's viewing the river below. He's probably hungry and looking for his next meal. What sort of meal will he look for? Rabbit may be, or a dear, they are powerful birds and have been known to attack people's dogs, which is pretty frightening. Let me get my camera out there. Take a look at this photo. He looks so beautiful standing on the mountain top. It's like he thinks he's the king and he owns the land. Oh, he's off into the sky. What an amazing side. Can you see that bird over there? We have known the dangers of global warming for a long time, but sadly, little action has been taken to respond to IT. However, we have listened to our children campaigning all across the world, and we have chosen to listen to them and make hard choices. We have set a date of twenty twenty five for petrol based cars to stop production. In addition, our governments will bring in a vehicle exchange system. IT will allow drivers to trade in their car for an electric model at no additional cost. We see this as an urgent action that needs to be taken. We cannot put profits ahead of the health of our planet for too long. The industries that pollute the most have dragged their heals well. No more. In addition, we will also be banning all plastic bottles by twenty thirty. Unless producers can find a way to make plastic breakdown, we would suggest a return to glass bottles. The boat ride from Helsinki's city center to the island of Pihlajasaari takes only 10
minutes and drops off visitors at beaches for sunbathing. But I had a different mission:to
speak to a tree.
This was meant to be a healing exercise, one championed by the Finnish biologist
Adela Pajunen.Finns, she'd told me,sometimes share their worries aloud to trees or
birds. On shore,I spotted a short black alder tree and began to tell the tree my troubles.
The leaves rustled(沙沙作响)in response,a sign I interpreted as sympathy.
I had come to Finland to see whether I could bring happiness back to America with
me.Finland has topped the World Happiness Report for the past eight years, largely due
to free education and universal health care. And the Finns also find happiness in more
attainable ways, such as their close relationship with nature and visiting the sauna (
daily. These activities contain similar goals:Stay present and seek a minimalist lifestyle
that relies on the earth.
I followed their lifestyle-visiting the sauna and taking a relaxing forest walk, and
happiness came in waves over the next few days.I was optimistic that I could recreate the
happiest moments of this trip back home in New York. How hard could it be,really?
As it turned out, happiness was a luxury in America, though I tried hard to live
exactly like the Finns. Then one afternoon,I had a breakthrough as I rushed through
Central Park and noticed a crowd of people staring at the ground.A cardinal!I stopped to
admire the bird's feather before it flew away. This was a win for staying present.I'd been
so stuck trying to find the time and money for happiness that I'd missed the point:Quiet
the mind, and find pleasure in small acts and observations-like a cardinal taking flight,
or talking to trees-right then and there.
As I left the park,I carried out a small but comforting ritual (I'd developed.I
thanked the trees for listening.

24.Why did the author speak to a tree?
A.To heal the tree.
B.To seek happiness.
C.To follow a tradition.
D.To appreciate nature.
25.What do we know about the Finnish lifestyle?
A.It requires daily sauna visits.
B.It values close relationships.
C.It is easily adopted elsewhere.
D.It focuses on simple pleasures.
26.Why couldn't the author recreate happy moments back in America?
A.She was busy with work.
B.It was noisy in New York.
C.She forgot to stay present.
D.It was expensive to live there.
27.Which of the following best describes the author's trip to Finland?
A.Transformative.B.Challenging.C.Adventurous.
D.Unexpected.
One of my bad habits is saying "busy"when people ask me how I'm doing.
Sometimes it's because I actually am busy, but other times it's because that's what I think
I'm supposed to say. That's what important people say. That's what people who get
promoted say.But working long hours doesn't drive better results.Never taking a vacation
won't lead to a promotion. So why are we so proud to talk about how busy we are all the
time?
In 2016,researchers from Columbia,Harvard, and Georgetown conducted a study to
figure it out. They found busy people are perceived to be of high status, and interestingly,
these status attributions are heavily influenced by our own beliefs about social mobility. In
other words, the more we believe that one has the opportunity for success based on hard
work, the more we tend to think that people who skip leisure and work all the time are of
higher standing.
That's why we feel like we have to appear busy, and there's a real perception that if
someone is knee-deep in meetings,emails,and stress,then they're probably a big deal.
This culture of busyness is making it hard for employees to find work-life balance.
According to a recent study, one in five highly engaged employees is at risk of burnout.
Personally,I'm going to stop saying "busy"when people ask me how I am.It sounds
self-righteous(自以为是的)and sets the wrong tone.Phrases like“I have limited access
to email"and "I'll respond as soon as I get back"sound like you're being held against your
will from working as opposed to making the most of your time off.
By rejecting the myth that busyness equals worth,we free ourselves and others from
exhaustion.True success isn't about working harder;it's about working smarter and
finding balance.Let's redefine what it means to be productive-and start valuing rest as
much as effort.
28.How does the author introduce the topic in the first paragraph?
A.By quoting famous people.
B.By presenting statistical data.
C.By comparing different opinions.
D.By introducing personal experience.
29.Why do we tend to think that busy people are of high status?
A.Our status can be attributed to our social mobility.
B.We hold the belief that hard work leads to success.
C.Our own opportunity for success never comes easily.
D.We find few people of high status have time for leisure.
30.What does the underlined phrase "knee-deep in"in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.Bored with.
B.Worried about.
C.Fully involved in.
D.Very interested in.

D.To argue against the culture of equating busyness with worth

A study co-led by Professor Rong from City University of Hong Kong (City UHK)
and Professor Ke from The Chinese University of Hong Kong(CUHK)Faculty of
Medicine has confirmed the presence of number sense in rats. This discovery is essential as
it establishes an animal model that could help researchers investigate the neural bases of
numerical ability and disability in humans.
The research team designed an innovative approach, combining a novel numerical
learning task with brain handling techniques and AI modeling. This method was crucial in
resolving debates on whether rats possess a natural sense of numbers. The study's
findings offer a deeper understanding of the mechanisms that support numerical
cognition.
Number sense is a vital cognitive ability that aids animals in understanding their
environment and enhances their survival prospects. It is also a fundamental aspect of
mathematical talent,which is a key component of human intelligence.About 3%to 7%of
people suffer from dyscalculia(计算障碍),a learning disability that affects the ability to
learn arithmetic and mathematics for people of normal intelligence.A shortage in number
sense is one of the major symptoms.
To separate the influence of numbers from continuous amount, the research team
conducted careful quantitative analyses. The study demonstrated that rats, even without
previous numerical experience, could develop number sense when trained with sounds
representing specific quantities.Remarkably, the rats consistently used the number of
sounds, rather than the sounds'continuous amount,to make choices associated with food
rewards.
Professor Ke expressed her excitement about the study's potential impact."This
research not only uncovers the mystery of how the brain processes numbers but also opens
new avenues (for studying the neural circuits involved in numerical processing in
animals,"she said."It also reveals light on the genetic factors associated with
mathematical ability.
The findings have broader effects, particularly in the field of Al,where the neural
network modeling could inform the development of smarter algorithms ()
Moreover, the enhanced understanding of the brain's numerical processing mechanisms
could contribute to creating interventions for individuals who struggle with numbers.
32.What is the author's main purpose in writing Paragraph 1?
A.To describe the methods used in the research.
B.To highlight the discovery of number sense in rats.
C.To introduce the researchers involved in the study.
D.To explain the significance of number sense in animals.
33.What is the characteristic of people with dyscalculia?
A.Abnormal intelligence.
B.Difficulty with languages.
C.A lack of number sense.
D.Strong mathematical ability.

How to Kick the Habit of Eating Processed Foods for Good?
Basically,we all need a total sweetness reset in everything that we consume."What I
advocate is making small changes to your behaviors and reducing the amount of sugar in
your diet systematically,”says Avena.“36 People who go cold turkey(突然戒除)
may experience headaches, anxiety, sleeplessness and intense desires."
Follow these expert-approved tips to get you on the right track:
Do avoid processed foods."Avoiding processed foods greatly reduces risk for obesity
and other diseases,"says Van Horn.Processed foods tend to be items that include ten or
more ingredients, often with some you can't find in your kitchen.37
Do read food labels. It's important to read ingredient lists carefully and watch for
different names of sugar."There are 50-plus names for sugar,"says McBurnett."It can
get very confusing."38 And when you're scanning the nutrition facts panel,a daily
value (DV)of added sugar is acceptable between 5 percent and 20 percent.
39 Naturally occurring sugars found in milk, fruits and vegetables, are
nutritious. All this isn't to say that you will never again enjoy another slice of birthday
cake or an ice-cold drink at the cinema.Your goal doesn't have to be going completely
sugar-free.
"Maybe you just want to get to a point where you feel you are at a comfortable level
of consumption--as if you're in control,”says Avena..“40_”
A.Don't avoid everything sweet.
B.Do refuse all the processed foods.
C.As a general rule,if it's an ingredient that ends in "ose",it's sugar.
D.Some researches has linked processed foods to negative health outcomes.
E.Instead, healthy foods are usually the whole foods you can prepare at home.
F.Doing this slowly, over time,is the best approach to avoiding withdrawal symptoms.
G.But over time, consuming less added sugar is bound to actually make your life sweeter.

Mary flashed a victory sign to the crowd.Just then, the school bell rang-class was over.
Mary packed up her skipping rope.It was time to give her answer to Ms.White.
That morning,Ms.White had asked her if she would be willing to take charge of the

Now,walking toward the teachers'office,Mary felt nervous. The thought of her
messy handwriting being put up on the wall for everyone to see made her stomach turn.
She had already made up her mind to say no.With that decision in mind, she quickened

long jump, but he was practicing it.Curious, she went over to ask what he was doing.
Tom explained that no one else had signed up for the long jump event, and without a
participant, their class wouldn't get any points in the school sports meeting. So when the
headteacher asked if anyone would give it a try,he volunteered.Mary reminded him that
he wasn't good at it,but Tom simply said that he knew that and that it wasn't about
being the best, but about trying and doing his part for the class. Then he went back to
practicing. What a similar issue they both faced!
