Watching movies is great for improving your English. And if you choose films that you enjoy watching, you’ll learn English without even realising it! Here are four movies that are perfect for English learners.
Charlotte’s Web (2006)
Story: The power of friendship between a pig (Wilbur) and a spider (Charlotte).
The live-action film, a fine adaptation of E. B. White’s book, will entertain the young audience with cute talking animals and easy-to-follow language. Adults will also be charmed by heartwarming good time and learn to look at the world with curiosity and joy.
Toy Story (1995)
Story: A cartoon film about toys that come to life when children and adults aren’t around.
The storylines are clear and the characters use simple but useful language. Though it’s mainly for kids, Toy Story doesn’t feel childish. The story and jokes also attracted adults, so parents would be more likely to take their children to see the film.
Charlie & the Chocolate Factory (1971)
Story: Things go wrong when a group of kids get a free tour of Willy Wonka’s chocolate factory.
This film is also great for English learners as it is generally easy to follow. And you’ll hear some extracts (选段) from English literature because Willy often quotes well-known writers such as Oscar Wilde and Shakespeare.
The Sound of Music (1965)
Story: A young woman (Maria) becomes the nanny for seven children in a house in the Austrian Alps.
The Sound of Music is a musical and listening to music is one of the best ways to improve your English. Many of the film’s songs have become classics because they’re so catchy.
21. Which movie attracts cartoon lovers most?

Maggie Doyne is caring for and educating helpless children and orphans in rural Nepal. What started with a plot of land that she purchased with her babysitting money has become a global model for poverty relief and development through her nonprofit, BlinkNow Foundation.
After high school, Doyne began her work after meeting a young girl in Surkhet, Nepal, whose life was ruined during the country’s decades-long civil conflict. Today, Doyne cares for 93 children, addressing their immediate needs and supporting them for long-term growth and self-sufficiency.
The organization also has a separate home for at-risk girls who have been victims of harm, human trafficking (贩卖) and violence, a food and farming program that trains women and farmers, and a full-service medical clinic. Doyne and a team of 175 caregivers, teachers, and professionals work together to offer comprehensive services that address the roots of poverty.
Her Kopila Valley School, once a small “bamboo shack (棚屋)”, has now served 1,000 students with state-of-the-art facilities, modern technology, and diverse course offerings. Students participate in gardening, farming, and conservation classes and are provided healthy meals to address poor nutrition. There is a daycare, as well as a readiness program called “Futures” to launch students toward college and job training programs.
At a speaking engagement in Los Angeles, Doyne connected with a filmmaker who shared a passion for humanitarian causes and storytelling. He started documenting Doyne’s work and life story. And the two began a journey together, professionally and personally. Now married, they raise their children in Nepal among their 93 siblings (兄弟姊妹).
Hope and action are ideas that Doyne made a reality two decades ago. And today, her message remains: “Keep doing what you can, no matter where you are. Keep showing up, keep loving, and keep going with your acts of kindness. It all matters.”
24. Where did Doyne’s early fund for charity land come from?
A. Donations from a filmmaker. B. Income from school students.
C. Earnings from her former job. D. Support from medical workers.
25. What inspired Doyne to start charity work in Nepal?
A. A speech about global poverty relief.
B. An encounter with a girl in Surkhet.
C. A bamboo school built by local farmers.
D. A medical clinic for homeless children.
26. What is the “Futures” program designed for?
A. Training local women in farming skills.
B. Offering medical treatment for poor girls
C. Building modern classrooms for rural children.
D. Preparing teenagers for further study and career.
27. Which of the following can best describe Doyne’s approach to poverty relief?
A. Systematic and sustainable. B. All-sided and imaginary.
C. Personalized and traditional. D. Accidental and unfair.

I am very familiar with the idea that computer systems are becoming so complicated that it’s hard to keep track of how they operate. I spent 20 years as a software engineer, working on really complex systems. And there’s always this problem.
The latest wave of AI relies heavily on machine learning, in which software identifies patterns in data on its own, without being given any predetermined rules as to how to organize or classify the information. These patterns can be mysterious to humans.
In order to learn more about the patterns, they mimic (模仿) layers of neurons, which transform information as it passes from layer to layer. As in human brains, these networks strengthen and weaken neural connections as they learn, but it’s hard to see why certain connections are affected. As a result, researchers often talk about AI as ‘black boxes’. the inner workings of which are a mystery.
In the face of this difficulty, researchers have turned to the field of explainable AI (XAI), expanding its tricks and tools to research reverse-engineer (逆向工程) AI systems. Standard methods include, for example, highlighting the parts of an image that led an algorithm (算法) to label it as a cat, or getting software to build a simple ‘decision tree’ that approximates an AI’s behaviour. These efforts to peer inside the black box have met with some success, but XAI is still very much a work in progress.
These models are now taking on important tasks. People are using large language models (LLMs) to seek medical advice, write computer code, summarize the news, draft academic papers and much more. Yet it is well known that such models can engender misinformation and let out private information.
For these reasons, XAI tools are being designed to explain the workings of LLMs. Researchers want explanations so that they can create safer, more efficient and more accurate AI. Users want explanations so that they know when to trust a chat app’s output. I think XAI will soon appear in the market.
28. What can we learn about the latest AI?
A. It is filled with mystery for humans.
B. It mostly relies on personal learning.
C. It has its rules to organize information
D. It can create and process data by itself.
29. What does the fourth paragraph mainly focus on?
A. Advantages of designing XAI tools.
B. The difficulty in inventing XAI tools.
C. The importance of learning AI’s behaviour.
D. Ways to explore reverse-engineer AI systems.
30. What does the underlined word “engender” in the fifth paragraph mean?
A. Recognize. B. Check. C. Generate. D. Adopt.
31. What’s the author’s attitude towards the birth of XAI tools?
A. Doubtful. B. Positive. C. Unconcerned. D. Cautious.
D
As the world’s population grows and farming space becomes more and more expensive, we are quickly running out of land to grow enough crops to feed everyone. For years, we have been told that the future of farming was vertical (垂直的), growing crops indoors in more space-efficient buildings. But this revolution has not yet come to pass, with currently only 30 hectares (公顷) of vertical farming space worldwide.
Now a new agricultural company based in San Francisco believes it has the answer to increasing this limited scale (规模). Using unique new 3D architecture that grows crops up to two stories high in huge towers, the company believes that it can change farming. The company says it can achieve 350 times more yield from the same amount of land compared to traditional farming, and it can carry out this model almost anywhere in the world. Its aim is to grow up to two million kilograms of leafy greens on an annual basis.
To start with the crop planting process, seeds are planted in trays using automated systems, and they are provided with an exact mix of nutrients to support the initial stage of the growing process. As the plants develop rapidly, the company has the ability to adjust the amount of light, nutrients, and water each individual plant receives, allowing it to control various aspects of the final product.
Once the plants reach a specific size, robot arms transplant them to the growing wall. The company’s indoor farm features vertical grow towers, along with LED lighting, water, and nutrient systems — all designed to grow produce in an efficient manner.
After the crops are fully grown, they are first picked and then sorted by using a high-tech sorting machine. This machine uses blue light to check the crops for damaged leaves, and only after this check are the crops sent off for packing.
32. What is the present situation of vertical farming?
A. High-cost. B. High-yield. C. Small-scale. D. Fast-expanding.
33. What does paragraph 2 mainly talk about?
A. The challenge of the vertical farm.
B. The development of the new company.
C. The introduction of the vertical farm model.
D. The background of traditional farming’s yield.
34. Which word can best describe the company’s technology?
A. Simple. B. Advanced. C. Eco-friendly. D. Widespread.
35. What may be the best title of the text?
A. The Future of Agriculture. B. Technology Brings High Yield.
C. Why We Should Grow Crops Vertically. D. Vertical Farming: A Sustainable Solution.
第二节(共5小题,每小题2.5分,满分12.5分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项,选项中有两项为多余选项.
Readers on TikTok are making the charm of reading more visible than ever with creative and often complex notes. These markups, called marginalia (旁注), include notes nearly filling full pages and matching the book’s cover in color. Their popularity has set off a debate: Is the practice of marginalia a bad or beneficial habit? 36 Some say marginalia ruins books, while others see it as a path to deeper engagement.
37 Leonardo da Vinci famously wrote down thoughts about gravity years before Galileo Galilei published his work on the subject. Just last year a famous writer told Literary Hub about the joys of reading her own books and noting patterns she never noticed before.
Alongside this evolution of margin additions, neuroscientists (神经科学家) have been researching the cognitive (认知的) effects of writing, pencil-to-paper. A study found that handwriting helps remember and understand more about what they’ve read and written. 38 A researcher pointed out that marginalia can help understand the material deeply enough to further develop one’s own interpretation of the text.
The desire to appear well-read through notes, when well kept up, can gradually turn into genuine intellectual engagement. 39 It’s a form of self-improvement that starts with a simple pen stroke and evolves into a habit of critical thinking.
If the “book-tokers” or “book-fluencers” want to match their bookmarks, highlighters, and sticky notes to the cover of their favorite new science-fiction tale, that’s great. 40 Marginalia harms no one, so let them eat cake even if they dirty the page.
A. Many readers enjoy marginalia.
B. It also promotes active engagement.
C. This practice is far from a modern trend.
D. Such details help enrich their reading experience.
E. The center of it is about preservation and interaction.
F. Note-taking tools can’t copy the benefits of handwriting.
G. Noting isn’t just about looking intelligent — it’s about being intelligent.

第二节(共10小题;每小题1.5分,满分15分)
阅读下面短文,在空白处填入1个适当的单词或括号内单词的正确形式。
Learning a language is usually different from learning other subjects. It is 56 unique journey that, unlike many other subjects, includes much practice and many follow-ups. When 57 (refer) to my own experience, I find it quite different from learning other subjects.
I studied English for ten years, from Grade Seven to university graduation. After graduation, feeling that my skills needed improvement, I made efforts 58 (increase) my fluency and changed my learning behavior. Indeed, learning a language 59 (take) a lifetime, and I am still learning it today.
My first English teachers kept changing, but they had much 60 common. They used the grammar-translation method and wrote bilingual word lists on the board, which we, as students, 61 (require) to copy and memorize. All teaching focused on reading and writing, so we had few chances to carry out practical 62 (explore) of oral English, and my first impression was that learning English meant memorization.
63 is still a headache for me to use idioms and proper vocabulary now. Besides, I must study harder to learn how certain words are 64 (specific) used in particular contexts. Sometimes, when I use an idiom intending to mean one thing, its connotation (隐含意义) may mean something else. English is a dynamic language that keeps changing. 65 adds another challenge to my learning, but it has also had a deep impact on my life.
