Unit 5 Look into the future
Lesson 3 (Speed up )
I. Teaching Aims
1. Read and understand the two passages about "Glass balls" and "Moon garden" — two cities of the future.
2. Answer questions about where people will live, what the city will look like, and how people will travel.
3. Draw and write about their own city of the future using "will" sentences.
4. Develop reading skills: scanning for details and comparing two passages.
II. Key and Difficult Points
Key points: understanding the two passages; using "will" to describe future cities; completing the comparison table.
Difficult points: distinguishing details between "Glass balls" and "Moon garden"; writing complete sentences about their own city of the future.
III. Teaching Tools
PPT, pictures of under-sea cities and moon cities, word cards (glass balls / under the sea / moon garden / special / celebrate), textbook, audio, worksheet.
IV. Teaching Procedures
Step 1 Lead-in (5 min)
Show pictures of different cities (Beijing, Shanghai, a futuristic city). Ask: "Which city do you like? Why?" Then tell students: "Today let's read about cities of the future."
[Purpose] Activate students' prior knowledge and lead into the topic naturally.
Step 2 First reading (10 min)
Play the audio while students read the two passages silently. Then ask: "Which city do you like? Glass balls or Moon garden?" Let 2-3 students share their answers.
[Purpose] Train students to get the main idea through listening and reading.
Step 3 Detailed reading (12 min)
Show the comparison table on PPT. Guide students to read again and fill in the table: Where will the city be? Where will people live? What will the city look like? How will people travel? Work in pairs first, then check together.
Answers on board: Glass balls — under the sea / in glass balls / clean, beautiful and interesting / by a special glass box; Moon garden — on the moon / under big plants / different / in special shoes to fly.
[Purpose] Train scanning skills and help students compare details between two passages.
Step 4 Draw and write (8 min)
Ask students to draw their own city of the future on paper. Then use the sentence frames to write 4-5 sentences: "My city will be in/on ___. People will live ___. The plants/animals will ___. People will eat ___. There will be lots of ___. People will travel by ___." Let 3-4 volunteers read their writing to the class.
[Purpose] Practice writing with "will" structures and develop creativity.
Step 5 Summary and homework (5 min)
Review the key sentences on the blackboard. Homework: 1. Read the two passages to your parents. 2. Finish your drawing and writing about your city of the future.
[Purpose] Consolidate what has been learned and extend practice at home.
