The boat ride from Helsinki's city center to the island of Pihlajasaari takes only 10
minutes and drops off visitors at beaches for sunbathing. But I had a different mission:to
speak to a tree.
This was meant to be a healing exercise, one championed by the Finnish biologist
Adela Pajunen.Finns, she'd told me,sometimes share their worries aloud to trees or
birds. On shore,I spotted a short black alder tree and began to tell the tree my troubles.
The leaves rustled(沙沙作响)in response,a sign I interpreted as sympathy.
I had come to Finland to see whether I could bring happiness back to America with
me.Finland has topped the World Happiness Report for the past eight years, largely due
to free education and universal health care. And the Finns also find happiness in more
attainable ways, such as their close relationship with nature and visiting the sauna (
daily. These activities contain similar goals:Stay present and seek a minimalist lifestyle
that relies on the earth.
I followed their lifestyle-visiting the sauna and taking a relaxing forest walk, and
happiness came in waves over the next few days.I was optimistic that I could recreate the
happiest moments of this trip back home in New York. How hard could it be,really?
As it turned out, happiness was a luxury in America, though I tried hard to live
exactly like the Finns. Then one afternoon,I had a breakthrough as I rushed through
Central Park and noticed a crowd of people staring at the ground.A cardinal!I stopped to
admire the bird's feather before it flew away. This was a win for staying present.I'd been
so stuck trying to find the time and money for happiness that I'd missed the point:Quiet
the mind, and find pleasure in small acts and observations-like a cardinal taking flight,
or talking to trees-right then and there.
As I left the park,I carried out a small but comforting ritual (I'd developed.I
thanked the trees for listening.

5.What do we know about the Finnish lifestyle?

Have you ever made a resolution to "study harder",only to fall back into old habits
within a week?John Whitmore's Coaching for Performance provides the solution-the
GROW model. This simple yet powerful framework (stands for Goal,Reality,
Options, and Will.It transforms fuzzy goals into concrete results by guiding you through
each step of the process with clearer wishes.
Imagine a student transforming "I need better grades"into "I'll raise my algebra
score from 72 to 85 by doing three extra practice problems daily."This Goal-setting step
creates measurable targets, just like an athlete aiming to cut two seconds off their time.
The power of GROW emerges when we honestly face Reality-that same student might
admit wasting 90 minutes on social media, while the athlete recognizes poor pacing. These
self-assessments,achieved through guided reflection rather than criticism, reveal the true
roadblocks to progress.
The Options phase shines as people create their own solutions.A nervous speaker
might record speeches or join drama club-self-chosen strategies work best, far more
effective than imposed advice. This leads naturally to the Will stage, where commitment
turns plans into action. Our algebra student might schedule Sunday study sessions, while
the runner commits to daily training.Such personalized plans generate real results-15%
grade improvements or personal bests-because the drive comes from within, not from
external pressure.
Whitmore's revolutionary insight redefines effective coaching:it's not about
providing answers, but about asking the right questions. This principle forms the
foundation of the GROW model, which succeeds because it agrees with how human
motivation actually works.
What makes Coaching for Performance so valuable is that it offers a structured yet
flexible system. The GROW framework provides clear guidance while allowing for
personal adaptation-a balance that explains its effectiveness. At its core,Whitmore's
message is empowering:every individual already possesses the capacity for change. The
GROW model simply provides the tools-strategic questioning, honest self-reflection,
and actionable steps-to help people realize this potential.

King Shahryar, betrayed (by his wife, decides to marry a new woman each
night and have her killed by morning to ensure he is never betrayed again.Scheherazade
volunteers to marry the king. Each evening, she begins an engaging story but stops at
dawn, leaving him eager for more.Night after night, she keeps him attracted with new
tales, and over 1001 nights, the king falls in love with her and abandons his cruel ways.
This ancient tale from One Thousand and One Nights highlights storytelling's
impact. Our recent research shows that strong storytelling skills can dramatically improve
someone's well-being.
At its core, storytelling helps people find meaning from life's chaos.Studies show we
shape our identities by turning experiences into personal stories.Skilled storytellers excel
at two key skills:they need to connect events logically and they must learn to see the
world through the eyes of their characters, understanding the "why"of what drives
people.Applying these two skills to their own lives, skillful storytellers use the first to
identify and pursue what gives their life meaning, while the second develops a mindset
that prioritizes the“why”behind their actions over just the“how”.
To illustrate this point,we conducted studies with 800 participants. We measured
storytelling ability through self-reports,friend evaluations and expert reviews on lab
experiments where each participant told one story about himself and the other with three
given random words. In addition to these assessments of storytelling skills,we asked
participants questions to get a sense of how meaningful they found life and whether they
approached decisions with a“why”mindset rather than a“how”mindset.
Results consistently linked storytelling skills to stronger life meaning and goal
clarity.Personality also mattered:people open to new experiences collected more
interesting life stories, while shy people used storytelling to balance out their limited
social interaction.
A strong "why"mindset connects with reduced stress and extended life.Storytelling
also builds social connections.By helping people express their purpose and build
relationships, stories may indirectly strengthen both mental and physical health.
Storytelling workshops, now popular globally, may do more than teach
communication-they could help participants redefine their life's direction.

13.What does the "why"mindset primarily focus on?

A.Tell a story with words provided.

While technology addicts teens to their devices, they are not helpless against the
draw of it.Here are five ways educators can support their students'digital well-being.
Explore design tricks companies use.The technology we use daily is designed to catch
and hold our attention.Companies know what keeps our eyes on the screen. To help,
teachers can unpack design tricks and explain how companies employ features like
autoplay to get users to stay on their apps.16
Talk about how technology can increase feelings of anxiety. The decline in youth
mental health is associated with an increase in social media use.17 We can help our
students by allowing them to consider the benefits of technology and then to think about
changing the habits that aren't serving their well-being.
18 Social media can bring the feeling:"All my friends have better lives than
me.Plus, design features like "read receipts"can lead to teens knowing their messages
have been seen and stressing about why friends haven't yet replied. These are classic
examples of thinking traps.Identifying them can help teens get rid of some negative
thoughts.
Uncover the ways that Al can play a role in misinformation.AI is rapidly
transforming the world.Recommendation algorithms ()which determine what we
do and do not see on our feeds and in our search results, can have very real consequences.
19 By understanding how these technologies work, students can start to enjoy more
benefits of technology.

quickly as she jumped. When time was up,the counter showed 201 skips.Smiling,
Mary flashed a victory sign to the crowd.Just then, the school bell rang-class was over.
Mary packed up her skipping rope.It was time to give her answer to Ms.White.
That morning,Ms.White had asked her if she would be willing to take charge of the
class bulletin board (for the upcoming competition. The student who usually
handled it,Lily, was sick, and someone needed to step in.Mary was shocked that Ms.
White had chosen her.She responded nervously, insisting that her handwriting was
terrible. But Ms.White reassured her, saying she believed in her ability and encouraged
her to think it over and let her know her decision after school.
Now,walking toward the teachers'office,Mary felt nervous. The thought of her
messy handwriting being put up on the wall for everyone to see made her stomach turn.
She had already made up her mind to say no.With that decision in mind, she quickened
her pace and ran across the sports ground.
Mary was about to pass the sandpit ()when someone nearby caught her
attention. It was Tom from a different class. In her mind,Tom had never been good at

participant, their class wouldn't get any points in the school sports meeting. So when the
headteacher asked if anyone would give it a try,he volunteered.Mary reminded him that
