In the past, life in my village was very hard. Most families were poor, and there were no clean roads or modern facilities. People had to carry water from a far river, and they used old oil lamps to light their homes at night. The old dirt roads were muddy and slippery on rainy days, making it difficult to travel or carry goods to the market.
Now great changes have taken place in our village. The government built a new water station and power factory, so we have clean running water and bright lights every day. Wide, smooth roads have replaced the old dirt tracks, and a new bus line connects our village to the nearby town. A journey that used to take several hours now takes only 40 minutes.
Local people have benefited a lot from these changes. A farmer said, “I can now carry my vegetables to the town market easily every morning. I make more money and my family lives a better life.” Many young people who left to work in big cities have come back to start their own businesses.
With the help of new technology, our life has become more convenient and colourful. We have a small community centre where people can watch movies, listen to audio books, and learn new skills. Old people no longer feel lonely, and children have more chances to play and study in a safe environment.
Although our village is small, the changing world has brought us hope and happiness. We believe that with hard work and the help of our society, our life will keep getting better in the future.

Deng Jiaxian was a Chinese physicist, known as the Father of China’s Atomic Bomb (原子弹). Born in Anhui Province, Deng attended the National Southwestern Associated University in 1941 and went to America for further study in physics. He studied a lot and got much useful knowledge.
After graduation, he didn’t accept the well-paid positions and superb research conditions provided by the American government or universities. Instead, he returned to Beijing in 1950 to work on nuclear research (核研究).
Deng faced great difficulties at that time because there was no such research information to learn from and there were few scientists. He worked with a group of recent college graduates and used abacuses (算盘) for calculation. It took about a month to finish a stage of calculation and about a year to calculate it nine times.
For about eight years, Deng worked very hard at the Gobi Desert nuclear testing site in northwest China.
In October 1964, under Deng’s leadership, China successfully tested its first atomic bomb. In June 1967, China’s first hydrogen bomb test was also carried out successfully. In 1979, a parachute (降落伞) failure happened during one experiment, which caused an atomic bomb to crash to the ground, but it did not set off. Deng knew the danger of cleaning up the crashed bomb. “You are young; you can’t go to do this,” Deng said to his colleagues (同事). So he picked up the broken pieces of the bomb himself instead of sending his team.
Deng’s wife, a doctor, learned that Deng had touched the broken pieces of the atomic bomb, and ordered him to return to Beijing for a full body check. The results showed that he had been badly hurt by deadly nuclear radiation (辐射). However, he still chose to return to the test site and continued to solve the problem himself.
In 1986, at age 62, Deng passed away because of the radiation. As a national hero, he was awarded the Two Bombs and One Satellite Merit Medal in 1999.
34.What does the underlined word “superb” mean in Paragraph 2?

A.Deng’s wife was greatly worried about Deng’s health condition.

Creating an interest in what they learn
Studies show that if you are interested in something, your brain is more active and it is also easier for you to pay attention to it for a long time. 42 For example, if they need to learn English and they like music or sports, they can listen to English songs or watch sports programs in English.
43
Good learners think about what they are good at and what they need to practice more. 阅读下面的短文,按照题目要求用英语回答问题。
This term, students and teachers in some junior high schools have seen some changes. These changes happened because AI tools stepped into classes.
By using AI to make personalized (个性化的) exercises and exams, teachers are able to help each student in different ways.
When students finish a unit, teachers can pick up different questions online offered by AI. It helps create a set of exercises for the unit. Doing this can make students learn knowledge better. “We don’t need to carry all the heavy exercise books anymore,” said 14-year-old Sophia.
After students complete the exercise questions, teachers use the AI tool to check their answers. It will provide data and graphics (图表) to help teachers understand both the performance of the whole class and each student’s progress. “Our teacher no longer explains all the questions one by one. Instead, she looks at the common mistakes and provides one-on-one help for every one of us,” said 15-year-old Emily.
Also, depending on their performance in past exams, students can get personalized exercises or homework made by AI. So students can spend less time on what they have already known and have more time to study what they don’t know.
“I used to have a notebook where I wrote down my mistakes so that I could study them,” said 16-year-old Jennifer. “But now, AI does it for me.”

31.What did people use to light their homes at night in the past?
A.Bright electric lights. B.Old oil lamps. C.Modern LED lights. D.Candles from the market.

A.Peaceful. B.Excellent. C.Different. D.Difficult.
35.What can we infer (推断) from the text?
A.Deng’s wife was greatly worried about Deng’s health condition.
B.Deng’s nuclear research was based on many scientists’ hard work.
C.Deng used abacuses for calculation because they made fewer mistakes.
D.Deng never took safety measures when picking up the broken pieces of the bomb.
36.What’s the correct order of the following events?
① China successfully tested its first atomic bomb.
② A parachute failure happened during one experiment.
③ China’s first hydrogen bomb test was carried out successfully.
④ Deng Jiaxian picked up the broken pieces of the bomb himself.
A.①②③④ B.①③②④ C.②①③④ D.③②①④
37.What does the author mainly want to tell us in the text?
A.The history and development of China’s nuclear program.
B.The greatest hero winning a Merit Medal in Chinese history.
C.A Chinese physicist who achieved his dream with hard work.
D.A national hero who gave his whole life to China’s nuclear program.

Hi, I’m Hanhan. I was born in 2008. China held the Summer Olympics that year. In the past 18 years, everyone’s life has changed a lot. So has my life. My grandfather Jianguo feels the same. He was born in 1949. “When I was your age, life was very different,” he said to me. But how was it different? I’m going to talk to him.
When I was born, many families were poor. Most people could spend only about 50 yuan a year.
In 2026, most people spend about 30,000 yuan a year. It has increased a lot. I have some pocket money. I use it to buy my favourite toys.
In 1949, about three quarters of Chinese people could not read or write. Going to school was a dream for many people.
Now almost everyone can go to primary and junior high schools. In some poor areas, students can enjoy free meals at school. We have better chances to make our dreams come true.
I used to live in a hutong with my family. My brother and I shared a small room.
My family lives in a tall building. I have my own bedroom, but life in the hutong sounds so fun.
38.When was Hanhan’s grandfather born?
A.In 1949. B.In 2021. C.In 2008. D.In 2018.
39.Students can enjoy ________ in some poor areas now.
A.free computers B.free bikes C.free meals D.free mobile phones
40.Which of the following is TRUE?
A.Hanhan lives in a hutong now. B.Almost no kids go to junior high school now.
C.Jianguo had his own bedroom when he was young.
D.In 1949, going to school was not easy for many people.

Everyone is born with the ability to learn. But whether or not you can do this well depends on your learning habits. 41
Remember, “Use it or lose it.” 44 “Practice makes perfect.” Good learners will keep practicing what they have learned, and they are not afraid of making mistakes. Alexander Graham Bell did not invent the telephone overnight. He succeeded by trying many times and learning from his mistakes.
Asking questions
Good learners often ask questions during or after class. They even ask each other and try to find out the answers. 45
Learning is a lifelong journey. Everything that you learn becomes a part of you and changes you, so learn wisely and learn well.
根据材料内容,从下面五个选项中选出能填入文中空缺处的最佳选项,使文章意思通顺、内容完整。
A.Practicing and learning from mistakes.

阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

How to Improve Our Study Efficiently
Now many students spend much time studying but get poor grades. It’s important for us to improve our study effectively.
First, we should listen to the teacher carefully in class and take notes in time. Reviewing what we have learned in time is also necessary, because it helps us remember knowledge better.
Second, keeping healthy matters a lot. We can do sports for half an hour every day and stay positive when we meet difficulties.
Third, don’t be afraid to ask others for help. We can turn to our teachers and classmates, and make good use of the Internet and the school library.
If we follow these ways, I believe we will improve our study efficiently and make greater progress.
