Fighting the Sandstorms
Spring Village is a small village at the foot of a hill. In the past, it had bad sandstorms every spring. The strong wind blew the sand into the fields and even into people's houses. The hills were covered with sand, and the farmland was getting smaller year by year. Life was hard for the villagers.
Then something changed. A young teacher from the city came to the village and told people about a special bush. Its roots could hold the soil together and stop the sand from moving. With the government's help, the villagers planted many bushes and thousands of trees on the hills.
Year after year, the green area grew larger. The air became cleaner, and the sandstorms became fewer and fewer. The farmland became larger and richer, so villagers could grow more crops. Some families opened small restaurants for the visitors who came to enjoy the green hills.
Now the village looks beautiful. People are happier and richer than before. They often say that one small idea and a lot of hard work can change a whole village. The story of Spring Village teaches us that humans and nature can live in harmony.

Life in the Past and Present
Let's compare life today with life 20 years ago. Great changes have taken place in many parts of our daily life.
In the past: People wrote letters to friends and waited weeks for a reply. They listened to the radio for news and music. Shopping meant going to markets early in the morning. Few families had computers, and most children played outside after school.
Today: We chat online with friends and get answers in seconds. We watch news on our phones anywhere. We shop on the Internet and the things we buy arrive at our door in a day or two. Most families have computers or tablets, and many homes use smart machines to help with housework.
Changes like these make our life more convenient and colorful. But we should also remember the past. The old ways taught people to be patient and to value face-to-face talks. We should keep the good parts of the past while enjoying the new technology.
In my opinion, the best life is one that uses the convenience of today and the warmth of yesterday.
( )46. How did people keep in touch with friends in the past?

C. Phones.

( )48. How do people shop today?
A. Only in markets.
B. On the Internet.
C. By writing letters.
D. In schools.
( )49. What do most families have today?
A. Radios.
B. Computers or tablets.
C. Only letters.
