Tom: The roller coaster can make you feel like you're flying through the clouds! Let's buy our tickets now!
Paul: Maybe...
Linda: What's wrong, Paul?
Paul: I guess I'm just not sure...
Tom: Come on. You didn't come rock climbing with us last month. You must come this time!
Paul: Oh, I don't know... Oh, I suppose so. Fine, I'll come.
Linda: Let's meet at the front gate at 9 o'clock. I can't wait to take off!
Paul: Yeah, totally...
Linda and Tom are happy and excited about going on a roller coaster.
Paul's uncertain tone might show that he is doubtful about going on a roller coaster. Maybe he has a fear of something.
Listening for tones The tone of a speaker’s voice can tell us how they feel. For example, when someone says “fine” with a cheerful tone, it means they are happy. However, an uncertain tone might show doubt.

Paul: Not really. I agreed to ride a roller coaster with my friends this weekend, but I'm scared of heights!
Teacher: Then why did you agree to go?
Paul: Because my friends were so excited. I didn't want to make them unhappy.
Teacher: I understand your problem. I think you should tell your friends that you're afraid of heights. They'll understand you. You can't always hide your feelings to please others.
Paul: But what if they never invite me again? I really enjoy spending time with them.
Teacher: I'm sure you can still do other things together. Just say "no" and explain why. True friends will respect your feelings.
