How much do you know about the folk stories from a country with a long history — Greece (希腊)? Here are some inspiring ones.
Odyssey years
Odysseus had a long journey filled with hardships for ten years before returning home. The odyssey years are a special time in life between being a teenager and becoming a true adult. Some people in their 20s might go to school and then take a break. They try different jobs to see what they like. So, don’t stop trying, as it’s all about learning who you are.
Damocles’ sword
Damocles is a man who was made to sit under a sword hung by a thin hair to understand that great power is always with hidden dangers. It reminds us that beautiful but unsafe things often hide serious risks. Bad living habits or bad personality can both be like a Damocles’ sword in our life. They may bring trouble little by little. So, stay careful and keep away from these hidden dangers.
Achilles’ heel
Achilles was a powerful hero with a super strong body except for his heel. He won all the fights until his enemies hurt his heel and finally caused his death. Everyone has an Achilles’ heel. For example, a top student may be great at every subject but might be super scared of speaking in public. Knowing your own Achilles’ heel helps you be honest with yourself and grow up bravely.
Sisyphus’ stone
Punished by the gods, Sisyphus had to push a huge stone up a mountain, but the stone would roll back down every time he reached the top. Sisyphus’ stone means tiring and endless tasks. For hundreds of years, students have learned in almost the same way: a teacher stands in the front of the classroom, and students listen, take notes and do exercises. But with the rapid development of technology, a new idea — smart learning — is changing the way people study.
So what is smart learning? Simply speaking, it means using technology, especially artificial intelligence (AI), to make learning more efficient and personal. Unlike traditional classrooms, where every student receives the same lesson, smart learning can provide a special study plan for each learner. For example, when you practice math problems on a smart learning app, the system will record your mistakes and find out your weak points. Then it will offer you more exercises of the same type until you really master them.
Another key method behind smart learning is “spaced repetition”. Scientists have found that people forget most of what they learn within a few days if they don’t review it. However, the brain remembers information better when it is reviewed again and again over longer and longer intervals. Based on this, smart learning systems can decide when to show you a word or a concept again — just at the moment when you are about to forget it. This makes remembering much easier and saves a lot of time.
Of course, smart learning is not perfect. Some people worry that students may depend too much on screens and lose the ability to think by themselves. Others believe that the most valuable part of education — communicating with teachers and classmates face to face — can never be replaced by machines.
In a word, smart learning is a useful tool, but it is not a magic stick. It works best when it is combined with traditional teaching and, most importantly, with the students’ own hard work. After all, no technology can do the learning for you.
56. How does a smart learning app help a student with math problems?
A. It gives every student the same exercises.
B It records the student’s mistakes and offers more exercises on weak points.
C. It helps students work out the answers.
57. Why does the writer mention “spaced repetition” in Paragraph 3?
A. To explain how smart learning makes remembering easier.
B. To show that students forget most of what they learn.
C. To compare smart learning with traditional learning.
58. What does the underlined word “interval” in Paragraph 3 probably mean?
A. a period of time between two events
B. an exam that students take at school
C. a part of the brain that stores memories
59. What is the writer’s opinion about smart learning?
A. Smart learning values more than face-to-face communication
B. Learning depends less on technology than on learners.
C. It does more good than harm to students.
60. What is the best title for the passage?
A.Smart Learning: A Perfect Plan for Personal Study
B Smart Learning: The Base of Modern Education
C. Smart Learning: A Useful Tool Needing Proper Use

How did you spend your last holiday? Did you just stare at a screen from morning till night? Well, you’re not alone. According to a new national survey, the average Chinese person now spends 337 minutes online daily. 71
Let’s be honest. How much of that time is spent learning a new skill or exploring a new interest? Not much. We’re watching short videos and scrolling, aren’t we? Rather than helping us relax, this is turning our brains into mush (烂糊). Spending too much time online viewing low-value content clouds our thinking. 72
Using the Internet can be like eating your favorite snack. 73 With endless short videos, our phones and tablets have become personal fun factories. It’s also very convenient and comfortable. 74 The more time we spend on our screens, the less real-life joy we experience. Nature doesn’t have Wi-Fi, but it does have fresh air, warm sunlight and pleasant birdsong. Hanging out with your friends in real life is much better than staring at your screen and laughing alone.
Screens aren’t going anywhere, but they shouldn’t take over our free time. 75 The winter holiday is coming soon, offering us a great chance to do so. Will you spend the whole holiday on screens again? Remember, “brain rot” is real!
A. But this “easy fun” comes at a cost.
B. Once you start, it’s hard to stop.
C. Instead, let’s set limits (限制) on screen time and try something non-digital.
D. Life isn’t about how much time you have but it’s about how you use it.
E. That’s more than five and a half hours of scrolling, tapping and streaming!
F. The Oxford Word of the Year 2024 — “brain rot” (脑腐化) — gives that a perfect summary.

Born and raised in a village, 46-year-old Bai Baosheng knows what a difficult life can be like. His parents were farmers who raised five children. Money was always tight, so even a good meal could make the whole family happy.
Bai belongs to China’s post-1970s generation (年代). During Bai’s childhood and youth, China’s economy became larger and stronger year after year, giving ordinary families like his more opportunities to improve their lives. These changes also gave young people like Bai more chances to build a different future.
Bai began preparing for his later work early in his adult life. He entered Henan University in 1998 and later spent five years working in rural (农村的) Henan. This experience puts him in a better position than those who would have had to learn these things from the beginning.
In 2015, Bai began poverty-reduction (脱贫)work in Dazhuyuan village. At the beginning, people from the local government showed Bai’s team where to start, introduced them to useful contacts and helped them decide what to do first. With this help, the team was able to move forward easier.
Bai and his colleagues first talked with villagers about possible jobs. They introduced practical methods so that local people could develop useful skills. The team also travelled to more developed cities such as Kunshan, Guangzhou and Huizhou. There, they contacted business owners and public organizations and encouraged companies to start business in the village. In this way, villagers had more chances to find jobs and make money.
Their work gradually changed the village. In 2015, 48 local households were still living in poverty. By 2020, all of them had moved above the poverty line. The improvements were not limited to a few families. Better roads, more jobs and easier-to-reach public services brought changes across the village.
For Bai, getting people out of poverty is not the end of the work. His team plans to build cultural centers and organize more activities, especially for older villagers. He also hopes villagers will develop a mindset: rather than simply thinking positively about themselves or thinking in a fixed way, they believe they can grow through learning, hard work and practice and become better even when they meet difficulties.

B.任务型阅读。根据短文内容,按要求回答问题。(共5小题;每小题2分,计10分)
India’s government has agreed to test 10-rupee (卢比) and 20-rupee plastic (塑料) banknotes (钞票). If successful, these notes will be used along with the traditional cotton-based paper notes used today. This move follows the global trend (趋势) as over 60 countries, including Australia, Canada and the UK, have already begun using plastic notes.
In 1988, Australia became the first country to introduce plastic notes. At that time, the country wanted people to continue trusting its banknotes while making its money safer, according to the Reserve Bank of Australia.
Plastic notes are better than traditional cotton-based paper notes. They are more resistant (抗……的) to water and wear, lasting 2.5 to 4 times longer. This reduces the number of replacements needed. According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), this is especially helpful for smaller amounts like 10 and 20 rupees, which are used more often and are more likely to be damaged.
Also, these new notes have better security features, such as transparent (透明的) windows and holograms (全息图), making it harder for people to make counterfeit notes (假钞). This is especially important in India, where around 230,000 counterfeit notes were found by the RBI between 2025 and 2026 alone.
But it’s also important to consider the environment. Using plastic notes can reduce carbon emissions (碳排放) because fewer notes need to be made and transported. However, they are made using petroleum-based (基于石油的) materials, and getting rid of them requires careful management.
81. Why does the writer mention Australia, Canada and the UK in Paragraph 1?
82. Why did Australia see plastic notes as a useful choice?
83. What are Paragraph 3 and Paragraph 4 mainly about ?
84. Are plastic banknotes completely environmentally friendly? Why or why not ?
85. If China plans to use plastic banknotes, will you support it ? Give at least two reasons in your own words.
