In December 2025, Saihanba forest farm successfully passed a Forest Management Certification (森林经营认证). It acts as a “green pass”, helping Saihanba’s forest products enter global markets.
Located in Hebei Province, Saihanba has experienced an amazing change. By the late 1950s, centuries of overgrazing (过度放牧) and logging (伐木) had made it into a desert. With sandstorms threatening the capital and other northern cities, China decided to bring it back to life. Today, it is the world’s largest man-made forest.
This success comes from the hard work of three generations (代) of foresters. In 1962, the first group of 369 foresters arrived there to plant trees, most of whom were in their 20s. “Working in the forest, you have to work hard no matter what the conditions are,” a worker said. Today, a new generation is taking on new challenges. They are using scientific methods to improve the forest. For example, they are planting mixed tree species to make the forest stronger against fire, pests (害虫) and climate change.
Over the years, these foresters have turned the desert into a green sea. The forest coverage (覆盖率) has increased from 11 percent to 82 percent. They also take pride in the “Saihanba Spirit”, which means remembering why they started, working hard and trying new things, and developing in a green way. In 2017, Saihanba won the UN’s highest environmental honour. Saihanba proves that strong will and science can turn poor land into green places. It sets a powerful example for green development, offering hope to China and other countries around the world.
4. What does the “green pass” help Saihanba’s forest products do?
A. Reach global markets. B. Grow more green plants.
C. Improve scientific methods. D. Avoid the threat of sandstorms.
5. Why did China decide to bring Saihanba back to life?
A. Because many tourists wanted to visit it.
B. Because the forest coverage had dropped to 11%.
C. Because it was the world’s largest man-made forest.
D. Because sandstorms threatened the capital and other cities.
6. Why are foresters planting mixed tree species?
A. To attract more tourists. B. To make the forest stronger.
C. To reduce the cost of planting. D. To increase the production of trees.
7. How did the foresters feel about the “Saihanba Spirit”?
A. Interested. B. Proud. C. Doubtful. D. Terrible.

Jane Goodall, a famous British scientist known for studying chimpanzees (黑猩猩), visited China from November to December 2024. She came to celebrate the 30th birthday of her environmental program, Roots & Shoots, in China. During her visit, Goodall shared many of her stories.
When Goodall was a child, she loved reading and exploring nature. Her mother always encouraged her to ask questions and learn more. Goodall dreamed of seeing animals in their natural homes.
In 1957, at age 23, Jane traveled to Kenya, Africa. There, she met the famous scientist Louis Leakey, who needed someone to study chimpanzees to understand human history. He believed Jane was perfect for the job.
In 1960, Jane began working in Tanzania’s Gombe Forest. At first, chimpanzees were afraid of her. She spent months quietly watching them until they trusted her. She gave each chimp a name instead of using numbers and discovered they had feelings and families, just like humans.
In October 1960, Goodall made an amazing discovery: She saw two chimpanzees using tools to get food. Before this, people thought only humans used tools. This discovery showed that chimpanzees are intelligent and social animals.
Jane spent her life protecting animals and the environment. She started the Jane Goodall Institute in 1977. In 1991, she set up Roots & Shoots program, which came to China in 1994, to encourage young people to take action to help the Earth.
“If we all do our part to help, the world will be a better place,” she said.

D. Her mother’s support helped shape her career.
14. How did Jane Goodall get chimpanzees’ trust in Gombe Forest?
A. By feeding them food every day.
B. By using numbers to name them.
C. By studying their family relationship.
D. By sitting quietly and watching them for months.
15. What is the main idea of the text?
A. To introduce the life and achievements of Jane Goodall.
B. To show the importance of studying chimpanzees.
C. To tell how to protect the environment in China.
D. To know Jane Goodall’s friendship with Louis Leakey.

Over the past ten years, great changes have taken place in the countryside of China. Bacha Village in Heilongjiang Province is an example. The people there have become rich with the development of tourism (旅游业).
It’s hard to believe how hard the life was there. In the past, people usually walked on the dirty roads in the village. On rainy days, it was difficult to walk on them. The rows of tile-roofed (瓦屋顶的) houses were very old and sometimes the rain might drop into the rooms. Now, the living conditions are much better and more comfortable. You Mingfen, a 57-year-old local woman, opened a hotel in her own two-floor house. Her family offer hand-made gifts made of fish skin and bones to the guests from all over China. “The busiest tourism season in Bacha lasts from May to October. It can bring us more than 50,000 yuan a year,” she said, “in winter, we can stay in a warm room and enjoy the leisure (休闲) time. It was impossible before. At that time, we almost depended on fishing for a living.”
Thanks to the good policies of the government, villagers get more ways to make money. Many young people now come back from big cities and work in their own hometown. They can not only care for their families but also build their hometown. After seeing the changes around, they believe that they will surely have a wonderful future.

例文
Great Changes in My Hometown
Great changes have happened in my hometown.
In the past, there were only narrow roads. People mainly went out on foot or by bike. There were few tall buildings, and the living conditions were poor. There were few trees, and the river was dirty. But now, wide roads run through the town. More buses and shared bikes make our travel much easier. Lots of new buildings, parks and libraries have appeared. People’s lives become richer and more comfortable. Besides, people pay more attention to the environment. Trees and flowers are everywhere. The air is fresher and the river becomes clean.
I’m proud of these changes. I hope my hometown will be better.
