A young man went to the boss of a logging (伐木) company and asked for a job. The boss said, “Let me see you cut this tree down.” The young man stepped forward and skillfully cut a great tree down in a short time. The boss thought he was good and said, “You can start on Monday.”
Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday passed. On Thursday afternoon, the boss came to the young man and said, “You can pick up your wages (工资) on the way out today.” The young man was very surprised and replied, “I thought you would pay on Friday.”
The boss said, “Usually we do, but I’m letting you go today because you’ve fallen behind. Our everyday charts show that you’ve dropped from first place on Monday to last place today.”
The young man argued, “But I’m quite hard-working. I am the first to arrive, and the last to leave, and even work during my coffee breaks.”
The boss thought for a minute and then asked, “Have you sharpened your axe (斧头)?” The young man was puzzled and said, “Sharpened? I had no time to sharpen my axe. I have been very busy trying to cut more trees.”
In life, just like the young man, we sometimes are so busy working hard that we don’t take time to improve our skills or “sharpen the axe”. Hard work is important, but we also need to always improve ourselves to be more efficient (高效) and successful.
4. Why did the boss let the young man go?
A. Because the young man was lazy.
B. Because the young man was often late for work.
C. Because the young man asked for too much money.
D. Because the young man didn’t cut enough trees.
5. What was the young man’s problem?
A. He didn’t know how to cut trees. B. He didn’t have a sharp axe.
C. He didn’t work hard enough. D. He didn’t get along well with his boss.
6. Which of the following is similar to “sharpening the axe” in life?
A. Playing games after school. B. Doing homework without thinking.
C. Learning new study ways. D. Sleeping late every day.
7. What can we learn from the story?
A. We should always work hard.
B. It’s not important to finish work on time.
C. We need to take time to improve our skills to do better in our work.
D. We should not argue with our bosses.
【答案】4. D 5. B 6. C 7. C

推理判断题。根据“Usually we do, but I’m letting you go today because you’ve fallen behind. Our everyday charts show that you’ve dropped from first place on Monday to last place today.”可知,年轻人从周一的第一名跌落到了今天的最后一名。因此可以推断出年轻人砍树的数量和效率下降,没有砍足够的树,才被解雇。故选D。

【6题详解】

【7题详解】

Using filters (滤镜) is common among young people on social media. Filters can make people look more beautiful and even add funny effects (效果). However, TikTok is making some changes.
In November 2024, TikTok said that users under 18 won’t be able to use beauty filters that change their features in ways makeup (化妆) can’t. But don’t worry, funny filters like animal ears will still be allowed.
Why the change? Beauty filters can hurt people’s mental (心理) health, according to the BBC. A UK group called 5 Rights found that 34 percent of girls aged 11 to 21 won’t post a photo unless they edit (编辑) how they look. Another report from Dove, a beauty brand, found that 48 percent of girls who often edit their photos feel worse about their bodies.
Seeing these edited images (形象) all the time can make it hard for young people to tell what’s real. They might start to think that perfect, edited images are normal, which can change how they see the world. Jessica Chalmers, an online child safety expert, said that TikTok’s move is “a step in the right direction”.
The ban (禁令) only works if users have accounts (账号) with their real ages. However, not everyone under 18 has given TikTok their real age. To help with this, TikTok is testing smart technology to look at things like “happy birthday” messages to guess ages.
8. What change did TikTok make in November 2024?
A. It stopped children from using the app. B. It stopped the use of filters on the app.
C. It updated (更新) its collection of funny filters. D. It stopped beauty filters for users under 18.
9. Why did TikTok make the change?
A To keep young people away from screens. B. To make more girls interested in the app.
C. To improve young people’s mental health. D. To encourage users to buy more funny filters.
10. What is Jessica Chalmers’ attitude (态度) toward the change?
A. Unknown. B. Encouraging. C. Uninterested. D. Not sure.
11. What can we infer from the passage?
A. All users under 18 on TikTok have provided their real ages.
B. Young people can easily tell real images from edited ones.
C. The ban on beauty filters might not work perfectly at first.
D. Funny filters will also be stopped for users under 18.
【答案】8. D 9. C 10. B 11. C
根据“In November 2024, TikTok said that users under 18 won’t be able to use beauty filters that change their features in ways makeup can’t.”可知,TikTok在2024年11月做出的改变是禁止18岁以下用户使用特定的美颜滤镜。故选D。

【11题详解】
推理判断题。根据“The ban only works if users have accounts with their real ages. However, not everyone under 18 has given TikTok their real age.”可知,美颜滤镜禁令只有在用户使用真实年龄注册账号时才有效,然而并非所有18岁以下用户都提供了真实年龄,所以可推断出这项禁令一开始可能无法完美实施。故选C。
D
Recently, a buzzword “lie down” (tang ping) has drawn public attention. It refers to people who have little ambition (抱负) and only do the least to get through in everyday life. The idea of lying down has touched a chord (引起共鸣) with many young people.
According to Global Times, pressure like school stress, work problems and family relations have pushed many young people into a difficult situation. They say they hate the “involution (内卷)”, joking that they would rather give up some of what they have than be caught in endless competitions.
Interestingly, most young people who say they are fans of lying down just see it as a short rest. It is true that with the great improvement of living conditions, some young people don’t want to bear (忍受) too much hard work. But in fact, lying down isn’t comfortable. Those who lie down often feel ashamed (惭愧的) for missing chances and losing confidence in their dreams. So many of them go back to their normal life.
A computer programmer told Global Times, “The 996 work timetable and high housing prices made me give up my job in Shenzhen. But moving to Dali isn’t enjoyable. I can’t find a good job there and I’m running out of money. It’s no use to run away. Now I’m thinking of going back to Shenzhen for more chances and better pay.”
So, instead of lying down, what can young people do under pressure from study, work, housing and parenthood? First, they should ask themselves: “________” Big goals (目标) can be difficult for people to hold on to, while goals within their reach won’t give them too much pressure.
Then, young people can record all changes every day, no matter how small they seem. These small changes will finally lead to the big ones they want. Seeing their efforts (努力) work will give them the power to keep trying.
Most importantly, don’t compare with others. Young people should enjoy what happens in their life journey and tell themselves, “I don’t need to push myself too hard all the time.” Sometimes, it’s best to have a break before getting going again.
12. According to Global Times, what causes the “lying down” lifestyle among young people?
A. Health problems. B. Being afraid of making mistakes.
C. Poor living conditions. D. The pressure from work and life.
13. Which of the following sentences can be put in the ________?
A. Do I have proper (适合的) goals? B. Should I have more goals?
C. When should I set my goals? D. How can I achieve my goals?
14. We can infer (推断) from the passage that young people ________.
A. don’t like the involution at all
B. really enjoy the “lying down” lifestyle
C. won’t truly give up achieving their dreams
D. always keep running away from challenges instead of facing them
15. What is the main purpose of the passage?
A. To encourage young people to lie down and give up competition.
B. To explain why lying down is popular and offer advice on dealing with pressure.
C. To show that lying down is a comfortable and lasting lifestyle.
D. To criticize (批评) young people for choosing to lie down.
【答案】12. D 13. A 14. C 15. B

【13题详解】

【14题详解】
推理判断题。根据“Those who lie down often feel ashamed (惭愧的) for missing chances and losing confidence in their dreams. So many of them go back to their normal life.”可知,躺平的人常因错过机会和失去梦想信心而羞愧,因此许多人回归正常生活,可推知,年轻人并未真正放弃梦想。故选C。

C
8 What change did TikTok make in November 2024?
A. It stopped children from using the app. B. It stopped the use of filters on the app.
C. It updated (更新) its collection of funny filters. D. It stopped beauty filters for users under 18.
9. Why did TikTok make the change?
A. To keep young people away from screens.
