China's leading liver (肝脏) expert Wu Mengchao had skillful hands that saved over 16,000 lives. This highlyrespected figure died at the age of 99 on 22 May 2021. As a matter of fact, he achieved important results in studying liver disease.
Wu was born in 1922 in Fujian Province. At the age of 5, he moved to Malaysia with his family. When he was in middle school, wars broke out in China and the country was under attack. In 1940, Wu returned to China to help his country with medical problems. He decided to become a doctor to save lives and improve people's health.
When his teacher learnt about Wu's decision, he suggested Wu should focus on the field of liver disease, because there was little research on it in China at that time. In 1949, he graduated from Tongji University School of Medicine and later became an expert in the field of liver surgery (外科手术).
To study liver disease, it is important to learn how blood moves in the liver. But there were no models to show this at that time. Wu thought of a way. He could pour some hot material into the blood vessels (血管) in a liver. When the material cooled down, he could destroy the liver. The material would remain in the shape of the blood vessels. However, no matter what materials he used, they disappeared with the liver. Wu's team felt sad about the experiment results, but they still kept trying.
One day, when Wu heard the news of the Chinese table tennis team winning the World Table Tennis Championships, he felt proud of his country all day. That night, he had a strange dream about swimming in a pool of table tennis balls. “That's it!” he woke up and said. “That would be the right material!” Wu's team then tried using the material which was used to make table tennis balls. This time, when they destroyed the liver, a perfect model of the blood vessels appeared!
In the same way, the team made over 100 models that helped Chinese doctors understand the liver better. Wu kept solving one problem after another in the study of liver disease. He was considered the “Father of Liver Surgery” in China and was awarded the “Top 10 Touching China Figures” in 2011 for his lifelong achievements in saving patients.

A Japanese producer of milk and dairy products came up with a clever way of encouraging kids to finish their milk at lunch—decorating the bottles with comics.
Seki Milk, a milk producer and processor in Japan's Gifu Prefecture, has been providing its products for local schools. In recent years, the company has seen that the need for milk has fallen. According to its own research, around 65% of school students were not finishing their milk bottles at lunch. This caused unnecessary food waste and also took calcium and other valuable nutrients (营养) away from students.
However, if you're a parent, you probably know that getting kids to eat things that are good for them isn't the easiest thing in the world. Luckily, Seki Milk came up with a fun way to encourage children to finish their milk—comic bottles.
Seki Milk worked with an ad agency Geometry Ogilvy Japan to create an interesting comic series. Students could only read the comic after drinking up milk. The comic is printed on the bottle in white paint, so it can only be seen when the bottle is empty.
A video shows that the ingredients on the bottles are changed into playful and often strong characters, which makes the comic's story more interesting. Butter looks like a scary ghost that frightens other characters. Ice is a lovely dancer. Cheese acts as a monsterlooking figure. Cream flies in the air as a sweet lady with a flying umbrella. With fun characters like these, children may have to collect milk bottles to fully read and learn more about them.
Although students don't have to finish the milk in order to get the comic art on the bottles, Seki Milk definitely deserves praise for its creative solution to the difficult problem.
( )31. Which can be inferred about the situation of Seki Milk before it introduced the comic bottles?
A. It only served students in Tokyo.
B. It was losing most of its customers to other companies.
C. It had already made a lot of money from selling comics.
D. It was worried about both food waste and students' health.
( )32. Why did Seki Milk produce comic bottles?
A. To make more money.
B. To help schools develop education.
C. To make children drink more milk.
D. To let parents take care of their kids.
( )33. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 4 refer to?
A.The video. B. The comic. C.The company. D. The waste.
( )34. How does the writer develop Paragraph 5?
A. By asking questions.
B. By telling stories.
C. By giving examples.
D. By listing numbers.
( )35.Which can be the best title for the passage?
A. Special Milk Bottles
B. Ways to Sell Milk

Do you know that nurses have their own special holiday? International Nurses Day is on 12 May every year. It is held to remember Florence Nightingale, a great woman who changed nursing forever.
Florence Nightingale was born in 1820 in Italy, but her family was British. At that time, nursing was not seen as a proper job for rich ladies. However, Nightingale had a firm will to help sick people. In the 1850s, she worked with other nurses to look after people who were ill. She made many important rules for health care. She had a habit of making rounds (巡诊) at night, so people called her “the Lady with a Lamp”. Later in 1860, Nightingale went to London and opened a healthcare school. She trained many great nurses in this school.
Every year at this festival, there is a special activity for nurses in London—one nurse passes a lamp to another. This means that knowledge is passed from one nurse to another. It is also because of Nightingale's name “the Lady with a Lamp”.
Today, more than half of all health workers are nurses. Sadly, the world still needs 5.9 million nurses. As a whole, the global health system hardly has enough nurses to meet all demand. The pandemic (大流行病) proved again how important nurses are. Without enough nurses, we cannot fight diseases. Many governments are now working to train more nurses, hoping to meet the future demand for nurses.
