This is Lesson 3 of the starter unit Welcome to junior high. The learning goals are to get detailed personal information about Zhu Xiaomeng, master the skills of self‑introduction, and understand why self‑introduction matters when entering junior high school. It continues the theme of adapting to new campus life from the previous two lessons and focuses on personal expression and interpersonal communication.
At the beginning of the class, the Look and Say activity presents a picture of a girl giving a speech in front of the whole class. Students observe the classroom scene and guess that the girl is doing a self‑introduction. Then Free Talk encourages students to share their real‑life experiences: when they introduced themselves before, what information they usually include, and situations where self‑introduction is needed, such as joining a new class, making new friends, entering clubs or taking part in talent shows. It helps students brainstorm key contents for self‑introduction, including name, hobbies, personality, family and feelings.
Next, students read Zhu Xiaomeng’s self‑introduction text. They extract her basic information through reading tasks. Her name is Zhu Xiaomeng. She loves sports, such as running, playing football and swimming. During the summer holiday, she travelled to Dalian with her parents. She swam in the sea and played on the beach. On her first junior‑high day, she feels a little nervous but really excited to meet new teachers and classmates. Pair‑work discussion guides students to analyse Zhu Xiaomeng’s personality based on the text.
After reading, the lesson shows the clear structure of a complete self‑introduction. It consists of five main parts: name, hobbies, summer‑holiday experiences, personal personality and wishes for the new term. Rich useful expressions are offered for each section. For hobbies, students can use phrases like playing Chinese chess, riding a bike and going roller‑skating. For holiday experiences, they can describe places they visited and activities they did. To describe personalities, words such as friendly, helpful, easy‑going and shy are provided. For future wishes, students may write about making new friends, joining clubs or studying hard. A sample self‑introduction passage is given as a model. Students are required to finish their own written self‑introduction and deliver it orally in front of the class.
The Think and Share part discusses the value of self‑introduction. A good self‑introduction helps leave a positive first impression and promotes mutual understanding among new classmates. Besides content, the lesson also teaches students about proper communication manners: keeping smiles and greetings, making eye contact, speaking slowly and clearly, using positive body language, and ending the speech with questions to show interest in others.
Important language points are sorted out in this lesson. First, the phrase “show sb. around” means to lead somebody to visit a place. Second, the structures “like / love sth.” and “like / love doing sth.” express preferences for things or activities. Third, “a bit” means slightly, modifying adjectives. The phrase “be excited to do sth.” describes the feeling of being thrilled to do something new. Fourth, “make friends with sb.” is used when students want to build new friendships. These phrases and sentence patterns can be used in both writing and oral self‑introduction.
In general, this lesson combines reading, writing and speaking practice around self‑introduction. Students not only learn practical vocabulary and sentence patterns for personal description, but also master the logical structure of self‑introduction. More importantly, they learn polite communication skills. The lesson helps new junior‑high students express themselves confidently and get ready to build new relationships in their brand‑new school life.
